What the hell is Ben thinking in NLMG? Part 3 (poolside date at Chopper’s house to bathroom confrontation)

A quick recap for those tuning in for the first time — whether you’ve loved Never Let Me Go for years or are discovering Perth & Chimon in the excitement of Dangerous Romance, this 5 (?? please stick to only five) part series aims to explore what’s going on behind Ben’s sometimes enigmatic personality. Continued from part 1 here and part 2 here.

At this point in the show, Ben is in his third and fourth character arcs. Arc 3 = his quest to try and make up for what he did to Nueng.

Arc 4 = his effort to overcome a lifetime of homophobic influence. 

(Note: both of these arcs will continue beyond this part in the meta series; unlike the previous two arcs, they don’t resolve nearly so neatly)

In episode 9, we get to see Ben & Chopper on what looks a lot like a date. Both of them are dressed nicely, they're outside of school, and even the lighting is warmer than what we’ve seen previously. This might be reaching, but I feel like Ben seems more comfortable early on in this scene — like something has been set right inside him. 

They pretty quickly start talking about the future and wanting to move out of their houses (can you imagine them in the tenth grade talking like “when I’m older I’ll buy my own place!”? I cry.). I find this line by Ben very interesting:

The writers are telling you early on in this conversation that Ben still considers himself dependent on his dad. He says it easily here but this is trapping him - he isn’t ever going to be fully free to be himself until he’s out of his house (which is key to how their story ends).

I ADORE the immediate next sequence. Once again, this is a Ben essay not a Chopper essay, but Chopper is giddy and able to freely be in love and he is not holding back anymore:

@thirstkanaphan adds: The ease with which Chopper offers this makes you think that he's been wanting to say this to Ben since the tenth grade. And it's an offer completely without strings! This is purely Chopper's selfless desire to give Ben what he wants, the freedom to live and love freely (even if it isn't with Chopper waaah).

The sequence of faces they make at each other after he says this is a really nice way to show how close they used to be and what they are returning to.

At first Ben finds this amusing. Dare say he’s charmed

Ben is always at his most comfortable joking around; I think he can enjoy conversation like this if it remains a playful fantasy. 

Except, Chopper brings out a newfound serious, sexy voice and ups the ante:

Here, Ben clearly gets overwhelmed. He immediately stops the flirty banter and tries to be realistic about their relationship. Right now, he can’t imagine a way where it would be possible for him to live with Chopper next year. It’s telling that quickly after he talks about his dad kicking him out — this is a real fear for him that he is making light of. I will come back to this but I think a lot of Ben’s ‘jokes’ are often him expressing his true feelings.

He also says: "If I feel worried or stressed, then I can come and see you". This is heartbreakingly telling of how much Ben is still struggling with his sexuality and what happened post outing.

But Chopper is in full on sap mode and not hearing Ben’s hesitation. He is the human embodiment of heart eyes. After so long, he wants to openly tell Ben how he feels. He takes Ben's hand and says:

So far that we’ve seen on screen, Chopper has now touched Ben five times and even in their earliest most awkward interactions Ben never resisted. This is different though: It’s real now — it means something when Chopper touches him — and it scares Ben. Maybe he’s thinking of Chopper’s dad seeing them, maybe he’s picturing those fliers falling from the sky, or maybe he’s remembering all the things he’s ever heard his own dad say. Whatever it is, Chimon shows Ben’s nerves in a few different physical ways - he gets fidgety. He bats his eyelashes MANY times in quick succession. He glances down at their hands.

For the very first time all series, Ben pulls away. He tells Chopper a tiny fraction of his discomfort (of course making a joke of it). If you watch this scene again, he then makes a very uncharacteristic move to push back his hair. Everything about his body continues to scream his nerves. He can’t even look at Chopper directly.

Then — and I recognize this also serves as a plot device — he makes up an excuse to give himself a moment to clear his head: he asks to go to the bathroom. But the show makes a point to tell you that some part of him, underneath the fear, is happy too. On the way, he turns back and he gives Chopper a really lovely — besotted is the only word for it —  smile:

Then he stares at Chopper for several long seconds, as if wanting to take the full sight of him in. The music changes and turns romantic and upbeat.

Ben might feel as if he is standing at the edge of a very terrifying cliff — but it is one he wants to be on, with the person he wants to be with.

Then, there is a time jump. When he next sees Ben in the bathroom at school, Chopper lets us know that Ben has been avoiding him a little bit — long enough that Chopper started to notice but not enough for Chopper to really worry yet.

Something that jumped out at me in the bathroom scene only on the third watch, is that Ben starts off sad. Chopper immediately asks him “what’s wrong?” And Ben looks a little like he’s going to cry:

PLEASE LOOK at the smiling Ben above again and then at this. Ugh, Chimon!!

Before he talks, Ben shakes his head subtly as if steeling himself. I think he realizes that he’s about to really hurt Chopper (if Chopper doesn’t know about his dad already) or he’s about to break his own heart (spoiler alert! he does both at the same time). His care for Chopper still shows in really small ways here, even as he’s upset, like him not wanting to go somewhere public where Chopper could get in trouble (because their school apparently has magic bathrooms that only the exact people who need to be in go in) and him initially easing into the news on the chance it’s going to be a surprise to Chopper.

Ben gradually works himself up into a full on strop, but I want to emphasize that he starts off from a place closer to grief.

As he starts to rant at Chopper, one line really sticks out:

This is a tough line. You the watcher remember that Ben chose Nuengdiao ‘first’ and him pulling his hand away earlier this episode could (incorrectly) be construed as him not really being that into Chopper. It’s also really hard to take Ben seriously about him stopping Chopper’s dad when Ben couldn’t stop his own dad when there were much lower stakes at play. This whole scene leaves a lot of room to judge and criticize Ben, especially when he comes across so outwardly angry while Chopper is tearful and earnest.

But what’s really important to remember here is that Ben has told/showed us (at least) four times that he feels guilty and ashamed he about what he did to Nuengdiao and wants the chance to make up for it:

When Chopper sits at the table with him post outing - "I was a jerk."

In his reaction to bully kid - see part 2

On the rooftop with Chopper -- also discussed in part 2, plus he says "I'm feeling so guilty" & "I want to apologize to him. But I'm not sure if he will forgive me."

By the school pool with Chopper -- when he asks if Chopper has any updates on Nueng

Ben truly feels stopping Uncle Kit is his chance to make things right

Him wanting to make things right doesn’t lessen his feelings for Chopper. He is actively fighting against his feelings for Chopper here. In fact, he has to look away when Chopper says one of his several devastating lines in this exchange:

He is staring at the bathroom tiles because he cannot look into Chopper’s tearful eyes.

After that, Ben does this stupid cocky nod thing, clearly working himself up again to go back to on the aggressive, which is an easier place to be emotionally:

Notice that he breaks the contact - it would be harder to maintain the emotional distance he needs with Chopper’s warm hand secure around his arm:

This is a completely ridiculous thing to say. This is Ben trying to maintain his righteous anger. And Chopper disarms it immediately with his sincerity ("I'm not threatening you. I'm worried about you.").

Look at Ben’s face. The anger instantly evaporates. And that’s even before Chopper says his number one most heart crushing line:

Pretend is a good word. Ben is trying to pretend Chopper doesn’t care about him because he is in a position where he can’t make things right for Nueng without hurting Chopper (and himself by proxy). And Chopper won’t let him keep up that farce.

At this point Ben sways backwards. His eyes are shining. When Chopper takes his hand, Ben has to blink 7 or 8 times. He’s very close to bursting into tears and Chimon plays it masterfully. Look at Ben’s face when Chopper says "If he hurts you, I don't think I can bear it". Go back and watch him have to swallow the lump in his throat.

This scene is not about Ben’s feelings for Chopper. Ben is moved almost to tears by the realization of how much Chopper loves him. This is about Ben’s fundamental sense of self worth. 

His ultimatum feels cruel compared to Chopper’s outpouring of emotion but it IS A CONCESSION he’s making:

This is difficult for us to watch because we know how scared Chopper is of his dad and it feels like Ben is forcing Chopper to confront him. But Chopper ASKED FOR THIS. Ben originally told him he was going to go straight to the police (see first photo in this essay). Chopper in fact, begged him not to. TWICE.

This is the most Ben is willing to cede on this point (“I will wait a little bit but I am not willing to be complicit in hurting Nueng again.”) At the core, he’s thinking: (If I knew Chopper’s dad hurt Nueng’s family and I let him get away with it, how could I ever consider himself a good person again?)

Ben ruins this gesture a bit with his last line and by yanking his hand away.

I think this is mostly self preservation though, however cruel it comes across. I think he was about ten seconds away from either comforting Chopper or letting Chopper pull him closer and he had to get away from him. I also think the words “I won’t care” can very believably be read at being directed at himself (“I’m not going to let myself care”)

If you watch this scene and tune out Chopper’s impassioned pleas (a big ask, I know), Ben is going through a whole lot more angst about it than immediately shows through. And Chimon uses a lot of micro movements to demonstrate this.

Thai Bl actors I think will make a good ____ part 1 :

Psychopath edition :

1. Bible ( kinnporsche )

> I think this explains itself, Bible’s Vegas is literally (almost) a psychopath. Especially the torture scenes, I think Bible will make a good psychopath in a series/movie. Just imagine, you see a sweet bartender everyday at the coffeeshop you visit but one night you accidentally witness something you shouldn’t have. The bartender you had a crush on, has a weird hobby of plucking out all the teeth of the people he has killed.

2. Perth ( never let me go, love by chance )

> I don’t know, Perth acting in never let me go convinces me that Perth can act as a psychopath. Something about the way his emotions and behaviour switching about in the show. Like how he has a crush on Ben and tells Nuengdiao that Ben isn’t a good person to keep Ben all to himself. Like imagine a yandere type of character? Chopper gives “ if I can’t have you, you can’t have anyone else ” kinda vibe. Toxic yes. I know it’s toxic. But like imagine how Perth could pull off a psychotic character like it would be hot. Okay I’m a walking red flag I need help. The backstory is there.. I mean.. imagine if Chopper listened to his Dad or turned out the way his Dad wanted him too. It is a possibility.

3. Fourth ( My school President )

> OKAY HEAR ME OUT! Something about his line in My school President “ smile, Mr School President ” screams manipulative. Like I think man can pull it off no problem. Just imagine, THE DUALITY THIS MAN CAN PULL OFF. Okay i don’t know I just feel like it is possible. Like I feel that fourth can take on a more darker ? Role. I don’t even believe, like it would be a good PLOT TWIST cause the man is a cutie like you wouldn’t expect him to be a bad guy. So it’s like when it’s revealed that he was the one behind everything it will be like :0. Do you know what I mean

4. Max ( manners of death )

While watching manners of death, I was convinced he was the one behind everything. Maybe it’s because of my habit of skipping when things drag out but you can’t convince me otherwise!! Something about the way he acts in manners of death makes me feel that can pull off a psychopath character. Like what my brain was thinking while watching the show was : this rich ass dude fell in love with the doctor dude and now he wants the doctor to be his only doctor so he ask his men to threaten the doctor’s safety so that he can save the man of his dream and killed of everyone the doctor trust so that the doctor only has him. You know? Same? No just me?

GMMTV2024 Hopes + Predictions

Predictions:

It's clear that G4 is becoming GMMTV's new BW since ON didn't work out. They will definitely have more concerts, and their ship is too lucrative for GMMTV to NOT give them a series. If they do get another one, I definitely think it'll be another school-based series. One thing is for sure though, they will be working like crazy next year.

While we're on the topic, Gemini might just get his het drama. I think we could even see him star in one of GMMTV's classic ensemble het shows or even a non-romance series. If he gets one, they'll definitely try to make it a non-threatening pair (knowing Thai entertainment it could be a slight age difference pairing).

Possibly another MSP special episode, second season or movie. This is one of my most far-fetched predictions but there's something about how G4 pulled out of 23.5 and Mark pulled out of Cooking Crush that gives me the vibe that they want to have another season of MSP possibly giving more screentime to the TiwPor couple.

There will be another The Warp Effect/Friendzone-esque drama that will introduce a BL pair we never knew we wanted. Maybe Lee Thanat X other seasoned GMMTV actor..

If MilkLove shows promise, ViewJune will get a GL.

Hot take but I think we'll get another PerthChimon-led series. GMMTV DUMPED budget into them and, barring a disaster, I can't see them fading the same way ON did.

We will continue to see JoongDunk have international fanmeets, concerts, etc. I can even see GMMTV focusing less on making a good series for them and more on selling tickets and merch.

OffGun will not have a series next year.

I have no basis for this prediction but I feel like either Tay, Off, or Perth will get a movie. (watch me be wrong lol).

One of the babies will get their first puppy love BL, probably near direct knock-offs of either Bad Buddy or MSP, since those were massively successful. My bet is on Indy or Ohm (not a baby but we move) leading. Chokun or Java could be a second lead/part of the second couple.

A GMMTV basement dweller (e.g., Podd, Pleum Pongpisal, etc.) will have their 2023 Gawin moment and resurrect their BL career with a more established, yet unpaired GMMTV actor.

To put a cap on it, I predict there will be a similar amount of BLs as there were last year (9 +/-2), another QL ensemble series (like The Warp Effect), and another GL (likely led by View OR Jan + [insert girl here]).

Hopes

NEOMARK SERIES. Idgaf what it is, hell it can be these two watching paint dry for 45 minutes every friday, just don't fumble this highly lucrative bag @.GMMTV!!

Another gritty series directed by Anucha Boonyawatana (or even Jojo lol).

Another TayNew series, please. I know Cherry Magic hasn't even aired yet and I sound greedy but bitch these two are killing me lately.

Stop casting Pawin in literally every BL if he's only going to be a villainous side character lmao. It takes me out of the story instantly when I see him plotting in the background in every show.

GIVE AJ A BL. Bring back Fiat if you can and let that ship SAIL.

JoongDunk and ForceBook need breaks...shake these pairs up. Give Joong het roles, let Force kiss other men, enroll Dunk and Book in improv! They already have all these concerts and reality shows, let them do that for awhile before filling your entire lineup with just these 4 pairings.

GMMTV 2024 Part 2 - Hot Tops

I did this for the first part, so I'm following up with the second part. I still have no Midnight Museum 2 or gym bros BL (why?!!!!!), and I'm excluding Ossan's Love and ReVamp since we knew those were coming, but, honestly, this list could have just been one show, and if you know me, you already know what it is . . .

#1 - The Heart Killers

I'm a JoongDunk fan first, and a human second. My troublesome tykes get to be gay and do crime, this might be a Jojo show, and they get to chill next to FirstKhao.

This isn't a gym bros BL, but somehow, I still won! Who do I look at first? Khao and Joong playing criminal brothers? Dunk being a mechanic? First being a tattoo artist? Not only am I getting a YinWar heist BL this year, but now this?! The chemistry is going to be 100%, and for this gift from the BL gods, I'm watching TWO shows on my Pride Petty Watch because I. Have. Been. Blessed.

#2 - Us

Sing was looking fine with his hair, and his body, and his presence, so for me to see him in all his beauty and still scream for him to get the fuck off my screen so I could focus on the ladies means THIS IS GONNA BE GOOD! I'm still holding petty grudges against Emi for the character she played in 609 Bedtime Story and Intern in My Heart, but the second she told her boyfriend's sister to come closer . . . *bites knuckles*

#3 - Heart that Skips a Beat

I'm shocked. I am fully invested in watching this idol love story knowing damn well I hate singing and dancing in my shows. And yet, somehow, this three-minute trailer convinced me that this wasn't just an average One Direction fanfic. No. This is about to be gold-tier fanfic storytelling. These boys aren't living in the BL bubble, but in actual this-shit-is-about-to-have-consequences-for-everyone reality. Plus, it appears to be color-coded, so bring me my idols!

Everything Else

Talking shit about any of the others is pointless because I'm going to watch them all anyway, at least the queer ones that is, so I'm just gonna write that my beef with JittiRain, who got two shows this time around, and Krist is still as strong as ever even though Be My Favorite, which was with both of them, was a great show.

But there was a lot of pink in Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist

And I like Perth x Chimon.

Best 2023 BL Side Couples

Every now and then the side couple steals the show, and you find yourself tuning in for the 2 minutes they get per episode versus the actual plot. Here are my faves of the year:

Moonlight Chicken: Li Ming ❤️ Heart

While this series may not have made my top 10 this year, this couple did. I'm a sucker for "irresponsible person learns how to be responsible through acts of love for someone who is physically impaired" story lines. (See also Last Twilight.) So every sweet gesture that rebellious Li Ming made to make deaf Heart's life more joyful and inclusive, including learning how to sign, made whatever was going on between the lead characters, Jim and Wen, an afterthought.

Kiseki: Dear to Me: Ai Di ❤️ Chen Yi

I love when the smitten one gives up riiiight before their crush is like Oh wait, I like you too! Theory of Love is another example of this, but KDTM did it better. You never really grew to hate Chen Yi, and understood why it took so long for him to see Ai Di as more than a friend. Baby boy was not really giving off crush vibes. More like in desperate need of therapy vibes. Thankfully, Chen Yi was immune to Ai Di's hostility, proving he was his perfect match.

Never Let Me Go: Ben ❤️ Chopper

There was so much going on in this drama that this pairing barely got enough screen time, and yet by the end of the series, I was daydreaming about them moving abroad together and living happily ever after. Loving the Chimon x Perth era. Hope to see more of it.

Unintentional Love Story: Kim Dong Hee ❤️ Go Ho Tae

I actually found the main pairing a tad meh, and was far more interested in the childhood bffs turned strangers subplot. I mean, the minute Ho Tae attempted to learn Spanish to impress Dong Hee, who fantasized about having a Spanish lover, I was hooked. I could watch an entire spinoff of these two with flashbacks to their youth and how their bond originally formed.

Ooh, ok, I adore @respectthepetty's awesome gym bros pitch for our GMMTV boys, so now I want to hear everyone's top proposal for a group BL GMMTV series. Let's say at least 3 couples, but you can add anyone else that you want on top of that.

My pitch? A heist series.

Main couples: FirstKhaotung, MarcPoon, JoongDunk.

Khaotung has just graduated from college and returns home to discover his grandmother and a bunch of her neighbors have been forced out of their homes with meager compensation, due to a rich asshole developer/real estate tycoon. He calls his besties from college, Dunk & Marc, for help. They decide the only thing to do is to plan a heist to steal from the tycoon, both for the money to give to the people he victimized, and to humiliate him.

Dunk's older brother, Pepper, lives with his boyfriend Papang, who works a legit job now but used to run in shadier circles and still has a lot of connections. They start recruiting.

First is the mechanically minded one, and yes, he will be wearing those tank tops from Not Me with the long arm holes, and he has lots of tattoos. Khaotung is pretty much lost at the first smile.

Poon is a tech expert, comes across as nerdy but has quite a dominant side. Marc takes a while to realize what is going on between them, but is into it.

My memory is terrible so I wanted to do a breakdown of my stuff every once in a while. Might be monthly, might be whenever I feel like it. Also there are too many shows on and something is always finishing or starting so a month is a lot.

BL - Currently Watching

1000 Years Old [2/12] - It's silly, and entertaining and makes me laugh. The friend group is delightful and I'm having a good time watching them. Was excited for a minute when Yo suggested a haircut for Pun because I cannot handle that wig. 🤞

Anti Reset [5/10] - This is one of the most frustrating shows I've watched in a while. The show doesn't seem to settle on what is actually trying to say about the AI of it all, and when it says something I'm not crazy about it. Why is it so frustrating? Because they are so fucking endearing when they're together on screen. I wanna love this show so much.

Cherry Magic Th [11/12]– I love them so much. I'm fascinated by the choices that the show is making. As a big fan of the manga and the jbl I came into this with reservations and this show is just blowing my mind. This was the best episode 11 of all time and Tay/New are delivering. My heart is so full with this.

Cherry Magic Anime [7/12]– Another helicopter ride! Yay. The date song was hilarious. We're now getting to the point where they are dating and Adachi is feeling guilty for lying so I'm curious how the show will adapt the next phase of the relationship.

Dead Friend Forever [10/12]– Glad to see we are all on board with Tan's murderous impulses. It's been so much fun having more people join in on the fun. As for me, I NEED White to stay alive. That's really all I want. Getting curious about how Perth factors in to all of this.

My Strawberry Film[2/8] - I feel it coming. I see sadness in my future. But I'm bracing because I'm loving the look of this show. And pining boys are my favourite type of boys. I'm ready.

Ossan's Love Returns [8/9] - The videos messages destroyed me but then that ending made me annoyed. I don't know what to expect in terms of Kurosawa but I hope he's not actually dying and there's a really good reason for all this. Medical mal practice might be the thing. Although as @twig-tea pointed out to me, since it was said in show it might not actually happen. I want happy for the ending anyway.

Perfect Propose [5/6] . Why must I only have them for 6 episodes??? I need more. Kai is everything to me, and that back hug followed by that smile melted by cold heart. Hiro's boss needs something heavy to fall on him from a great height. And please Hiro,sweetie, I need you to eat better and sleep.

Although I Love You, and You? [7/10]- Sakae is letting me down. And by that I mean, the show is letting me down. Sakae needs to put his foot down with Mizuki and go back to being a fool in love with Soga.

To Be Continued [1/8] - It's not amazing. but I'm a sucker for second chance romance and there are two couples so there's a 50% chance I will like this. We'll see. Also, they need to start hiring younger actors for the high school flashbacks. This goes for A Secretly Love too. Having 27 year olds and up playing ten years younger just won't do. It's terrible.

Unknown [2/12] - I'm intrigued. Not completely sold yet but I'm liking it so far. Also nothing would keep me away from watching Sam Lin again.

Also watched the first episode of A Secretly Love and caught up with City of Stars but it's on the 'I need to shut of my brain' schedule so I'm not necessarily watching to weekly.

BL - Finished

Cooking Crush - I will miss all of them. I loved it so much. The whole cut/uncut version thing was annoying and the editing was weird at times but overall this was wonderful. Communication done right. Relationships and character growth was stellar and both couples won my heart. Aungpao really surprised me, considering he was surrounded my pros on all sides. Dynamite was a joy to watch. And OffGun delivering with all the kissing. Everyone should watch this.

The Sign - I mean, what they did to this show is absolutely insane. Not airing the finale like the rest of the show. Having to pay extra for happy ending is ridiculous (although I kinda predicted this and @lurkingshan is my witness. I said as a joke and it turns out reality is a joke.) Then waiting 2 whole weeks for whatever that was. Just the most unsatisfying experience. Go read this from Shan because I agree with everything said there. Also @bengiyo final thoughts here really echo how I felt about this show overall.

Happy Ending - 20 minutes split in 3. Why? No idea. Was it a happy ending? I think so. Was it cute? Sure. Was it great to watch Seong Hyuk again? You betcha. But I didn't love it. I need Choco Milk Shake S2, like, TODAY.

Playboyy - It ended.

Rose Watches OJBL - I feel bad about this. I didn't watch any of the ones I planned to. This might seem like whatever but I've been trying to catch up with awards season films, because since uni, me and a couple of friends always do it and finish it by watching the oscars together and so ojbl was were I dropped the ball. Gonna restart soon though.
