The song reached #6 on the UK singles chart becoming the band’s eighth top ten single there. “IOL” (released on May 1 in the USA) was nominated for a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

R.E.M. - Monster⁠ ⁠ @rem @craftrecordings #rem #michaelstipe #peterbuck #billberry #mikemills ⁠ ⁠ I've been dropping pretty much exclusively landmark albums lately which has been both fun and stressful. A band like REM has a giant catalog with distinct eras and super polarized fans at different data points throughout. Until it became cool again with this incredible reissue from my friends at Craft Recordings, Monster was the misunderstood weirdo in a catalog full of endearingly weird music from a band that was destined for the Hall of Fame. Monster was my real initiation with REM...I was about 10 years when it came out, not quite aware of my own queer identity but VERY intrigued by Michael Stipe's newfound IDGAF outlook about being queer, and into loud, crunchy, and intense guitars (but not quite aware of metal or other heavy genres just yet). What's the Frequency Kenneth DOMINATED MTV for a minute, and listening to people react (either with profound love or bitter disappointed scorn) was kind of my first exposure to what happens to a devoted following when a band has the audacity to try something a little different. I knew bits and pieces of their early albums but didn't feel a smug allegiance to anything in particular, so I met Monster with open arms and an open mind...and was mostly on my own, if we're being real. I still look back on this album and how heavy it sounded compared to what they were famous for, how much MTV attention they got during a time FLUSH with amazing "alternative" rock, and how after all these years of collecting, my OG copy with the orange front is still one of my most prized possessions. This version has a second disc full of remixes/demos/outtakes and goodies for the real-deal fans. My typewriter says: it's been 25 years since it's release and it's still one of the best alternative rock albums made by one of the biggest mainstream bands at the time: R.E.M - Monster. The 5.1 mix on Blu Ray sounds extraordinary and there are great photos and liner notes. The new mix is totally pointless and the included live concert on CD shows that also Stipey is human and sometimes can't hit the notes. *This song so reminds me of High School and my friend Petra who is the one who first got me into REM. As my wife Dani likes to tease me about all my Fave 80’s retro music had a singer with a British Accent (or German I point out) and a Keyboard. lol, well this band broke me of that habit I suppose ;) (I like a lot of their stuff, but no this did not curb that habit, not really)
