Hi, how’s your 2021 so far? I saw a comment comparing Scott and Jean relationship to Peter and MJ. Do you think there are similarities?

I’m stressed out of my mind with grad school apps, but other than that, things are going pretty okay! I hope your year has been treating you well.

PeterMJ and ScottJean are two iconic, long-running Marvel Comics couples that consist of a redheaded, outgoing woman and a brown-haired, very private man who have known each other since they were teenagers. There are definite similarities, and they invite comparison.

However, I don’t think Peter and Scott or Mary Jane and Jean have all that much in common, and the differences in the characters cause definite differences in the relationships. For example, Peter is angry in a way that Scott is not; even Scott at his most bitter never matches the sheer power of Peter’s anger. Scott is self-deprecating and self-doubting in a way that Peter is not; Peter may be upset with himself or feel like he can’t do something, but self-doubt doesn’t form the core of his character the way it does for Scott.

And while Mary Jane and Jean are both using their outgoing nature as a way to prevent anyone from actually getting close to them, they do it in very different ways. Mary Jane makes everything about her and seeks out the limelight; Jean denies herself everything and dedicates herself to trying to help others. (This isn’t, by the way, to say that Jean is Good and MJ is Bad. They’re both coping mechanisms, neither one is particularly healthy, and they both result in really interesting and realistically flawed characters.)

Because the people involved in the relationships are different, naturally the relationships are different. They have different issues to work through and different ways of interacting. I think MJ and Peter default to teasing more than Scott and Jean do, and Scott and Jean have a relationship that is always based in their relationship as teammates, something MJ and Peter are not.

I’m also going to tag @nativehueofresolution in on this because she knows a lot more about Peter and MJ and their relationship than I do and she’s also a Scott/Jean fan, so she might have some interesting thoughts!
