Whisker Whisper

His whiskers were glorious. Elaborate white spikes sprouting from black brows and cheeks, they were impossibly magnificent, like a Dr. Seuss detail. I wanted to save one before burying him but it felt violent to pluck one from his beautiful body, arranged with three delicate flowers and a petite rubber pig, his favorite toy.

It’s not like we hadn’t before shared parts of ourselves, my cat Nobi and I. Arriving as an abandoned two-year old, my closet was his refuge. There, he would snack on my clothes: cozy sweaters his comfort food. Hundreds of dollars of my clothing he ruined, but I just held him close, nibbled on his velvet ears, and whispered: You’re safe. You are mine.

Eventually, he relaxed and (mostly) kicked his habit of chomping my clothes.

We slept together every night until his last, my hand on his back. My spouse wasn’t jealous; she slept on the other side, three spoons in a bed. Twelve years total we had, attached like this.

When he became too sick to live, I held him close, caressing his face moistened by my tears. He was scared at first, being in a vet’s office, but in my arms he relaxed and closed his eyes. After his body went limp, his claws were still embedded in my shirtsleeves. As if he too wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

The morning after burying him in my mother’s backyard, it appeared on my bed. One glorious white whisker, whispering back: You are mine too.

I switched to a business profile earlier this week. I am new to my current business, Norwex, but have been selling health products for several years. Since going public on Instagram, it’s been a bit interesting. The person who did the February training said they don’t have issues but I’ve had a lot of friend requests from fake accounts. Another interesting thing is that I have had requests from several “dog trainers”. One wrote wanting me to be an “ambassador” for their product. I’m sure that means nothing because it was very “spammy” sounding. I prefer Facebook because my friends there know me and my life. Feel free to friend me there if we’be just connected with Norwex. As far as “pets” go…well…I am petless. My husband retired from the military last year. Our home is in Alaska. We are spending the Winters “Down South” with our family now. Last Fall, we took the “Francesca the Dog” and “Jack the Cat” for a veterinary well check before moving. We flew with both of them with us on the plane. Tom (my husband) is from Alabama. His sister lost her cat to age. She likes to have two cats and spoils them. Due to our travel, we decided for Jack to become her new furbaby and he is still very much a part of our family. Fran was to travel back and forth with us. I had rehomed her from a breeder who never took her to the vet. During all of her vet care I had been told she had a heart murmur. She had a heart attack early New Year’s morning of 2021. We only had a few short years together but it still hurts. The good news is that Jack is doing GREAT! He will be 4 in a few weeks! Also, we get to visit with him. One of my big focuses is on PETS. I had a dog that was tragically killed as a puppy and who became the world's best canine communicator. He opened the door for other dogs and cats to give messages for others that I've proven over and over. I give fundraising lectures at animal rescues, and do pet readings.

I've had this gift since I was a teenager, when my grandfather appeared to me 6 months after he passed.

There are a lot worse things happening in the world right now, but I would still like to share this piece I made of my favourite chicken Stella. She died on Saturday. Ironically I had already planned on posting a photo of her this week, long before I knew she was dying. Instead I had to draw her to channel my emotions.
There are probably a lot of people out there who can’t for the life of them understand how you could be sad over a dead chicken, a chicken you didn’t even know for a year at that. I get how it sounds. But she came into my heart already as the tiny black little chick she once was — and then she stayed there. I am going through a lot of guilt for not have been visiting her for a long time because I thought my life was more important, forgetting she was part of it. And I can’t help but think that if I had done, visited I mean, then maybe I would’ve noticed something was wrong sooner, maybe we could’ve saved her.
I am not the sole caretaker of these chickens, I was more there as the “mom” and the cuddlegiver, we have so many chickens so no one noticed her being sick before it was too late. But maybe I would have, if I would’ve seen her. Because she was my favourite. She was a good girl.
