For a long time I’ve thought that cancel culture is toxic. I hate how every little thing that a person has done will come back to bite them. Nobody is perfect. And nobody should be expected to be perfect.

But I’ve always kept my feelings about cancel culture to myself. I chose to distance myself from every ‘scandal’ and move on.

But then I watched Jenna’s video...

I support Jenna in her decision, but I am also extremely disappointed in the culture that we as a community have created.

I’m not condoning what Jenna did in the past or saying that it’s alright by any means (and I am not in a position to accept her apology on behalf of everyone who was impacted by her past actions). Nor am I saying that Jenna was point blank ‘cancelled’.

But Jenna’s decision to leave and cancel herself is (I believe) rooted in the mentality of cancel culture and the idea that people cannot grow from their mistakes and learn.

In today’s society no influencer is immune to ridicule. It was probably only a matter of time before Jenna really was ‘cancelled.’

I’m not saying that Jenna is perfect. But she is human.

Her apology shows that she is willing to learn from her mistakes and grow.

What frustrates me is that we are so quick to push someone aside and turn against them. And even though that isn’t directly what happened with Jenna, I think the overal ‘cancel’ mentality is very harmful.
