on phandom whiteness, race and stereotypes

I've been meaning to make this post for a while. I have never been very active in this fandom space, and part of that has been due to a discomfort I have felt that i have never felt i could discuss openly. So while I want to be a part of this phandom, I need to adress the elephant in the room and I want this sideblog I created to be a space where others like me can feel safe to voice their feelings and thoughts.

To preface this, I am not looking to "cancel" dan and phil. I just want to talk about my experiences both as a hardcore phan for years, and as someone who deviates from the usual dnp fan: I'm not a white person from Europe, US, Canada.

To put it bluntly, some of their videos are extremely hard to watch and enjoy and it makes me feel alienated when no one talks about it. There is no media without "problematic" elements, but I feel like in other fandom spaces people at least talk about elements worth questioning because they may be offensive or ignorant.* And yet dan and phil are hailed as "unproblematic kings" when this is not the case at all, and it's hard to bring up how I feel.

I'm not looking to make a comprehensive list of everything they've said, but I will talk about a few examples to illustrate what I mean.

Does anyone remember the Mexican Dan thing? He seems to have deleted most of the things associated with that period where he was tan and "jokingly" fancied himself a different race because of it but this little window to that time remains in one of the most beloved videos of all time. Can you see how this might be hard to watch? When even the most iconic videos they've made are sprinkled with little instances of ignorant comments like this?

And let me be clear, I know this was ages ago. I'm aware they might have grown and changed. What really gets to me is how nobody in the phandom ever talks about these moments. It makes me really lonely and disappointed that everyone turns a blind eye to things that might tarnish the image of their faves.

Like for example, the pewdiepie situation. I'm not going to discuss everything he did and said. But imagine how it might feel as a non-white fan to want to rewatch old dnpgames videos and find that they kept their videos with him up all this time:

They were clearly quite friendly with F*lix. Besides these videos, Felix is also casually mentioned in some of their videos and livestreams from the time before he was "cancelled" (more on that later). But did they ever say anything condemning his actions? I think that given how they had collaborated and were friends, I would expect them to say SOMETHING rather than just never speak on the matter (as far as I know, the closest they got to this was in a liveshow where dan said he had had "a conversation" with felix in a way that implied he disapproved of his actions.) Or at the very very least, is it really that hard to delete a video? They have deleted old videos for a variety of reasons. How is collabing with a known racist not reason enough to go through the trouble of deleting a video? But deleting other videos just because they're a bit"cringey" is worth that time?

I just wonder how regretful they really are at having been friends and collaborators with him. In fact, part of me wonders if they are still friends behind the scenes. If this is ever confirmed btw, that will cause me to stop watching them forever. And they might still be friends in their little white circle for all we know. After all dan and phil are long time friends of KickthePj. And PJ is STILL friends with pewdiepie.

Now, besides PJ being dnp's friend and having once been part of the phantastic foursome, I don't care much for his content except for when dan and phil have been featured (lol sorry not sorry). And this might be the case for many of you as well! But some of you ARE avid kickthepj fans and decided to ignore the fact that he uploaded a video with pewdiepie last month. There is no plausible deniability here anymore. Despite the harms pewdiepie has done in internet spaces--and how that extends to real life--NOBODY said anything about how kickthepj doesn't care enough (or at all) to simply NOT make a video with pewdiepie.

It's staggering to me that no one cares. It's shocking to me that in these videos i've mentioned, you go to the comment section and everyone will be happily enjoying the video with no mention of these things.

Is this what being "cancelled" looks like? It seems to me like with the passage of time, Pewdiepie and his friends and followers just want to sweep it all under the rug. How is it that the internet will tear a man to shreds for plagiarism but then find it in themselves to excuse racism?

Why does no one care? Is it because this space is overwhelmingly white? I think so. I think it's a conscious choice to turn a blind eye when it's convenient. So I just wanted to make this post to say that if you ever feel alienated by the white ignorance of dnp or their circle of their fans, then you can come talk to me and I won't ignore you.

I want to be a part of this phandom, I really love dan and phil, but I'm not going to "stan" them. I'm not going to make excuses for them. And I'm not going to keep quiet just so I can be a part of this fandom without making the vast majority of white fans uncomfortable.

*I'm thinking of my experiences in the supernatural fandom. (Although, i'm not saying it's perfect. There are certainly a number of fics that have made me feel very disappointed inthe creator for falling into the trap of racial stereotypes in OCs and stuff like that, and despite that so many people enjoy it and include it in rec lists.)

My Experiences

♤ my first shift happened only a month or so after starting the journey three years ago. I had made a MHA DR for my first one, which is now basically retired due to me growing out of it. it was a thing where I was living with the League of Villains (if you don't know MHA those are indeed the villains and very not good people). anyways. I meditated before hand, listened to a Raven method subliminal, and went to sleep. I woke up standing in my DR bedroom with the lights off. the only thing illuminating it was the light from the two fish tanks i had scripted in. the sheets on the bed were also visibly black, which I had scripted as well. I very clearly remember the door being ajar and being nervous that Dabi would walk in. from outside my room I could also hear a TV playing the news but couldn't make out what they were saying. I woke up in my CR after a couple minutes total.

♤ my second experience also comes from this same DR. I don't remember what I did before sleeping, but I had a dream about my teeth falling out into the bathroom sink. at some point I became aware that it was a dream, and became lucid. so, to test my control over the dream, I mentally summoned Bucky Barnes from the MCU. it worked, he appeared, and that was all I needed. I willed myself to shift from the dream and ended up in my DR bedroom again. it looked exactly as I had scripted, and I could see everything this time. I passed by a mirror and noticed I still looked like my CR self. so, I verbally spoke the affirmation I used to describe my DR self whenever I would do methods, and I kinda shapeshifted into my DR self. it was crazy ngl. then I went outside my room and into the living room only to find some of the League there. Toga and Dabi were both sitting on different couches, and they looked like they were having a sleepover or something. Toga waved and said hi to me excitedly, and Dabi was too focused on his phone to notice me. I heard Shigaraki say something from behind me which scared me so bad I got thrown back into another dream that I can't remember. the air in my room felt very fresh.

♤ the third one was a weird one and came out of nowhere. I had a lucid dream where I opened my closet door and affirmed that I would shift once I entered it. and I did. I know this because the sensations were completely different from lucid dreaming. I walked down a really cramped hallway and eventually got to a room where Pewdiepie and Marzia were chilling and playing some Gundam fighter game. I chilled with them and we started talking about how some streamer stole some art I made or something, so I asked if I should start posting speedpaints to help my art be more associated with me. Pewds was like "I mean yeah, sounds good to me." I also remember he kept making the game glitch out and the model move in a weird way that made me laugh and he was like "WHY ARE YOU LAUGHIIIIING" and it was nice for my inner youtube kid brain. funnily, what shifted me back was seeing a fish tank and thinking about how much it looked like my CR tank. for some reason I woke up in my CR after that, ig I focused on it too hard

♤ the final experience is another random one and another MHA related one. and kind of a dubious lucid dream, not sure. it starts in a dream yet again where I go outside my house to the back porch and notice my hands are glowing yellow, which I had scripted for my DR quirk "soothing touch". this led me to snap into a lucid dream or minishift, I'm still not really sure. I could smell the rain, and I could feel all the physical sensations like my breath and the wood beneath my feet. Deku is on the porch with me fsr and we talk for a little bit. then he gives me a cheek kiss (not sure why) and I could VERY clearly feel how dry his hair was. like, caked with hairspray type dry. I walked over to a door and was intending on going to my DR through it, but I got woken up by a phone call. thanks @homebeyondstars <3

◇ despite not shifting fully for more than ten minutes ish after 3 years, I'm still going. and so should you. find a way to get excited for your DR, cause it is genuinely exciting having the chance to go somewhere you love at no cost. I'm not gonna stop, and I intend on visiting everywhere I want to go and learning everything I can from those experiences. happy shifting, tell me all about it when you come back <3

Digital Citizenship and it's connection of activism in the social media landscape.

Welcome back to my blog!

This week, we will be taking a look into what digital citizenship is and how hashtags help digital citizens engage in politics and activism in today's digital age.

First of all, What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship can be described as people using digital tools to produce, consume, communicate, and interact with others positively and responsibly (Council of Europe n.d.). It can also mean being a citizen of government portals, social media sites, and online commerce as if these platforms were their own nations or empires with multiple duties for their citizens (Pangrazio & Sefton-Green 2024, p.17).

So who are these so-called "Digital Citizens"?

Well, everyone is a digital citizen!

Ever since the introduction of the internet, it brought us so many ways to produce, consume, communicate and interact with others easier than ever!

Apps like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram gave us a new way of consuming media other than just TV shows and News. Furthermore, it also breeds new generations of micro-celebrities like content creators such as Mr.Beast, PewDiePie, Mike Chen etc.

I am sure readers are familiar with the term "hashtags (#)" whenever you scroll through social media apps like TikTok, YouTube or Instagram.

What are these hashtags (#) for?

This symbol (#), or as we love to call it "Hashtag", is used to categorize material on all major social media platforms (Buffer n.d.). Basically, it's a categorization of content for users to discover topics they are interested in.

HASHTAGS. ARE. EVERYWHERE.

From the likes of #cats, #school, #shoes, #illustration etc. on every single post on social media.

Hashtags aren't just a tag that brings netizens together to discover and discuss topics they are interested in, they also aid the formation of ad hoc publics around specific themes and topics such as politics and activism (Bruns & Burgess 2015). These hashtags that raise awareness about issues such as racial discrimination are known as "Hashtag Activism".

Hashtag Activism can garner loads of media attention and the involvement of digital citizens to raise awareness of issues such as violations of human rights, victim justice, environmental and natural disaster awareness, opposition to government policies that harm people, fund-raising, encouraging the introduction of laws or regulations to reduce crime or promote human rights, etc. (Goswami 2018)

For example, do you remember when the Black Lives Matter movement was trending on social media platforms under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter in 2020?

Despite the hashtag #BlackLiveMatters was created in 2013 following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the murder of George Floyd marked the catalyst that led to massive protest and widespread use of #BlackLivesMatter in social media platforms in 2020.

Netizens share this news with their friends, families and even audiences that are not aware of the movement to raise awareness about the racial discrimination among blacks and other minorities in the United States of America, creating a public sphere for digital citizens to show their support in the movement and bring racial equality in the American society.

Coincidentally, after the widespread #BlackLivesMatter use in social media, #AllLivesMatter popped up out of nowhere in the protest and social media too.

Although the motivation for the hashtag #AllLivesMatter is unclear and may vary for different individuals, we can agree that it is considered a countermeasure against #BlackLivesMatter to deny acknowledgement of ethnic violence and police brutality and its intent to divert attention away from the #BlackLivesMatter movement in 2020.

This shows that sometimes, digital citizens can create hashtags that can be used for unethical reasons, primarily for malicious intent.

In conclusion, digital citizenship is a concept that describes people using digital tools to consume, produce, communicate and interact with each other. With the rise of social media, comes the rise of hashtag usage, especially in the activist movement such as #BlackLivesMatter.

In the video, Pewds learned that bees will be coming to Minecraft in a future update, and debated whether he should wait until the official release, or use a cheater to create them instead.

"There's bees in Minecraft!? I'm not sure if I can play the new one. Since I don't believe that you can spawn them without cheating. Or should I wait until the actual update? I think I should just sit and wait." he stated.

Have you ever carved a pumpkin before? How about roasting the pumpkin seeds? I have and recently did with some friends and my boyfriend I believe last October. Even with the tools I struggled getting the knife to cut in the direction I wanted but it was fun regardless. I have no luck with those tools XD. As far as roasting the seeds - I feel I did with my mom at some point or in elementary school did something for that month with the seeds. Do you/have you ever played basketball? I’ve played it for fun during gym but not competitively.  Have you ever driven over/knocked over one of those orange traffic cones before? Yes like during the driving practice tests.. Can you think of anything that rhymes with orange? I have to look this one up and I got “Blorenge (a mountain in Wales) and sporange”. I haven’t ever come up with my own before for this.

Cheetos, Cheez-Its, Cheese Balls, or cheese curls? Cheez-Its :D or Cheetos. I’ll eat Cheese Balls if they’re around. Not sure if I have had cheese curls or not. Have you ever owned a pet goldfish before? Never have, no. Have you ever watched Garfield before, or read his comics? Yes to both.

Do you believe that carrots really give you better eyesight? I tend to believe it growing up. I don’t actually know if that still stands true or not. Would you rather eat oranges, mandarin oranges, or tangerines? They’re all pretty yummy but I like tangerines. Do you prefer sweet potatoes or squash? Honestly neither, not a huge fan of these foods but sweet potatoes if I had to choose. Sweet potato tots and bbq can be tasty. Have you ever had a kidney stone before? No and hope to never experience it! From the people I know that have had them it sounds horrid. Do you like orange soda or orange juice? Orange soda yes and orange juice with no pulp. 

Did you know that the majority of orange cats are actually males as opposed to female? I did not know that. Have you ever had orange chicken before? How was it? I love orange chicken specifically from one restaurant. I got the frozen kind from the store but it isn’t the sameeee.
