Helado Negro Album Review: PHASOR

Roberto Carlos Lange's music as Helado Negro straddles the conceptual and tactile world, and never so much as on his most recent album PHASOR. The ideas for the record's sounds came when Lange visited the SAL MAR machine at the University of Illinois, a sort of synth supercomputer built by composer Salvatore Martirano; Lange was "enthralled" by the infinite sound sequences such a machine could create. But the album's other inspirations and stories, and the ultimate final product, is much softer. He wrote its predecessor Far In during lockdown; PHASOR, in contrast, is the sound of the outdoors, Lange's move to Asheville to be closer to family, and returning to the drum-and-bass-focused world of 2019 breakout This Is How You Smile. Such context imbues his songs--whether about a plea to a lover, heartbreak, or Mexican-American Fender amplifier builder Lupe Lopez rubbing elbows with sonic meditator Pauline Oliveros--with utmost warmth.

From the get-go, PHASOR simply flows. Opening track "LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros)" starts with vocal whoops but quickly gives way to Jason Nazary's krautrock groove, Lange's half-spoken baritone traveling through the rhythm like a sinew. In general, his vocal tone clues you in to how he's feeling. "What's best for you and me is all wrong," he sings on the mournful "Best For You and Me", in harmony with none other than Sufjan Stevens as well as plinking piano from Opal Hoyt, dark bass synth, and layered percussion. "Colores Del Mar" is an instant standout, Lange cooing in Spanish over hip hop percussion, his spoken words following the harmony of layered vocals and rubbery synths. He sings, "I don't want you to look for me / I just want to disappear," though in Spanish, his repetition of the word for "want," "quiero" is percussive in and of itself, his annunciation sounding like he's stuck in time. That is, at times, on PHASOR, Lange is content to let the world pass him by, but on songs like "Colores Del Mar", he wants to break free.

On its two most forward songs, PHASOR exudes a sense of longing. The funky, gentle "I Just Want To Wake Up With You" is clear about its intentions but is nonetheless thrilling, Lange pining with his falsetto over blipping electronics and Jason Trammell's shuffling percussion. And "Wish You Could Be Here" is the loneliest club song of the year, the soundtrack to dancing by yourself to a thumping bass, Matt Crum's skittering drums propelling the tune to new heights. No matter Lange's mood, his latest Helado Negro album finds worlds to explore in each emotion.

The host adopts 3.5-inch true color LCD screen, which can display phase, frequency, phase sequence and nuclear phase results on the same screen; Vector diagram indication and phase indication are clear and intuitive; It has voice prompt functions such as "X signal is normal, Y signal is normal, in-phase and out of phase", which makes the test easier and easier.
