Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School is a popular YouTube series. Tucker Foley is a star student.
Barbara Gordon's Cram School posts free online courses for both coding and computer engineering. Think Crash Course in terms of entertainment, but college lecture in terms of depth. Hundreds of thousands of viewers flock to it— students who missed a class, people looking to add new skills to a resume, even simple hobbyists. It’s a project Barbara’s proud of.
Sometimes, when she wants to relax, she’ll even hop in the comments and spend an afternoon troubleshooting a viewer’s project with them.
User “Fryer-Tuck” has especially interesting ones. Barbara finds herself seeking out his comments, checking in on whatever this crazy kid is making next. An app for collecting GPS pings and assembling them on a map in real-time, an algorithm that connects geographic points to predict something’s movement taking a hundred other variables into account, simplified versions of incredibly complex homemade programs so they can run on incredibly limited CPU’s.
(Barbara wants to buy the kid a PC. It seems he’s got natural talent, but he keeps making reference to a PDA. Talk about 90’s! This guy’s hardware probably predates his birth.)
She chats with him more and more, switching to less public PM threads, and eventually, he opens up. His latest project, though, is not something Barbara has personal experience with.
FT: so if you found, hypothetically, a mysterious glowing substance that affects tech in weird and wacky ways that could totally have potential but might be vaguely sentient/otherworldly…. what would you do and how would you experiment with it. safely, of course. and hypothetically
BG: I’d make sure all my tests were in disposable devices and quarantined programs to keep it from infecting my important stuff. Dare I ask… how weird and wacky is it?
FT: uhhh. theoretically, a person composed of this substance once used it to enter a video game. like physical body, into the computer, onto the screen? moving around and talking and fighting enemies within the game?
FT: its been experimented with before, but not on any tech with a brain. just basic shields and blasters and stuff, its an energy source. also was put in a car once
FT: i wanna see how it affects software, yk? bc i already know it can. mess around and see how far i can push it
BG: […]

BG: Sorry, thinking. Would you mind sharing more details? You said “blasters?”
Honestly. Kid genius with access to some truly wacky materials and even wackier weapons, she needs to start a file on him before he full sends to either hero or villain.

I realized as I was finishing my last paper for my class that I will never have another graded assignment in this masters, and that was enough to get me through the last page of it.
#i still have assignments to be clear but because i front-loaded my courses it's credit/no credit from here on out 😎#never have to worry about my gpa again as long as i live#like even if i get a phd. maintaining good standing is MUCH easier than trying to maintain a good enough GPA for phd apps#which was the only reason i gave a shit lmao#megs vs mlis

i have fucked myself into a corner so much so that at absolute minimum I have to write 18,000 words in the next 80 days but if i have extra fucked myself i might have to write as much as 45,000 words by the end of the year

sometimes i forget that i started this blog to be about philosophy. anyway i've already told all my group chats so here's one for the blog: just got off a video call w the admissions director at my tied-for-first-choice university and i cannot tell if he thinks i have a shot or if im too much of a loser for their very cool program.
he did give me the very good advice to email faculty i want to work with to introduce myself and get to know them and their work, so maybe that's indicative of . good rapport idk
off to write emails and hope professors deign to respond. please i want to keep doing epistemology. what does it matter

i submitted my final grad school app today (excepting one school where i'm still waiting to see if i passed round one... if i do, that'll be my final app in february) and it feels both really good to be done and very weird. it's all out of my hands now!
#liveblogging life#still don't really think this will go anywhere but i'll start finding out in february and know for sure by the end of march#i ended up w/12 schools altogether (11 if i dont pass round 1 for one of them)#and adjusted my list quite a bit from what it originally was bc of timing and whether or not i could submit lors thru interfolio lol#my last app required a critical essay and i spent the last few days fixing up an old paper i wrote on left hand of darkness#and you know what? damn i'm good at academic papers. i kind of forgot i have a degree in that lmao#if this actually works out (????) my eventual goal is actually an english phd lmao. i know academia is hell but i'd thrive on htat#anyway at the end of the day i'm happy i finally took the plunge and if it turns out to be all rejections at least i fucking tried#maybe now i can go back and update my fics again [sob]

i CANNOT wait for this semester to be over. 23 hours remain. God.
#im gonna do nothing on saturday.#literally i am just gonna crochet madly and rewatch the terror for the first time since August#i need this. i need it.#gonna make amigurumi rats and an opossum for my friend. and nothing else.#i am so close. just gonna touch up my mock teaching portfolio in all aspects and turn it in.#idk how i went from: reworking 2 old term papers. writing from scratch 5 statements of purpose. 1 personal statement. a CV. a resume.#a video essay.#a 10k paper. a digital project with research. a self assessment. three interviews for class. a mock syllabus. a lesson plan.#a teaching philosophy. two lectures and a final to proctor.#that was my ENTIRE to-do list 3 weeks ago. not counting the research and soundwalking in a game i had to do for that 10k paper.#idk how i went from ALL THAT. to this. in that little time. with a holiday in the middle.#how the FUCK did i do that. what the shit.#i need a massive break but what the hell. what.#like. idk. i was really proud of myself on Monday for finishing that big paper bc 10k is the longest paper I've written for school.#and i wrote it in A WEEK.#most of the work was compacted into 4 days. 4 DAYS.#i did most of tha phd app work in 12!! 12 fucking days!!#i have had an extremely productive 21 days. and I'm so proud of myself for managing all that shit.#but oh my god i am so hype to become one with my couch and do a hobby bc i havent done hobbies in............. at least a month.
