As the year comes to a close

Sitting putting the end of year reviews together for my business - selecting those moments caught on 'film' that encapsulate a game, a moment, a place, or a person - and I am thinking a lot about what has happened during 2023 and more importantly, what has changed.

The criteria for continuing on with the way I am approaching my business was set early on this year and I think there needs to be changes...if not to how I do certain things, certainly a review of who I work with (I am only talking about one or two people/clubs).

In my personal life there are a few people who seem to want to create mischief, chaos or trouble - I simply cannot continue to put up with them. I don't need their drama...no let me put it a little more strongly...I don't need their bullshit.

2024 will see those individuals sidelined and they will know why.

It's not all negative, far from it. 2023 has been a good year and probably the best year since we exited from the pandemic years. My business has been growing strongly and there are opportunities on the horizon that I want to grasp with both hands.

As a show of commitment, I have invested in my business and I am learning new skills, trying out new techniques and wanting to keep ahead of the competition...something I have already had very positive feedback about.

This isn't supposed to be my end of year review...it is just a moment of reflection while I do other stuff...but it is helping me formulate my photo review for 2023...and pushing up the first shoots of ideas for 2024 and where I would like to be this time next year.

I think I'd like to be collaborating with others in 2024; maybe working in conjunction with a photo agency whose aims and principles align with my own. Changes Afoot

The photography business is ever-changing and I am not one for standing still.

I've been slowly evolving the equipment the company uses to reflect both what my clients want and what I think they will need in the next 12 to 18 months.

It's not an easy thing to do, as there are trends that can catch your eye, but simply do not have any commercial value, and will have no real future.

The equipment I tend to gravitate towards buying has to have the following few basic characteristics: -

Weatherproof - no brainer with this one, cameras and lenses must be able to survive in more than a light shower.

Good build quality - the equipment will stay with me for at least five years...and some for their entire lifetime. So it must be able to survive a few knocks without breaking.

Good lowlight handling - this is something that I always look at. Can I use it in the lowest of light and still provide professional looking results.

Intuitive to use - I want to be able to pick up something and 'know' how to use it. If it is a pain in the *** to use, then it will stay in the camera bag.

This past winter has tested a whole lot of new equipment, with the light levels being low and the weather being terrible. I'm looking forward to the summer of sport when I can bed in the cameras, lenses and other equipment that has passed the test.

I guess I should start with what I’ve been doing since taking a break from this blog. I started a wildlife photography business! It’s incredible how much giving myself a reason to go outside every day has changed both my mental and physical health. It’s also a great way to go out and explore local places I’ve never been, and give myself an excuse to travel a bit.
