"McGill Plans New Course," Montreal Star. July 30, 1943. Page 3. --- Physico-Therapy Study Will Be Feature --- McGill University proposes to establish a course in Physio-Therapy beginning October 1, it was announced this afternoon.
Due to the increased demand for physio-therapy technicians in both civilian and military requirements, and also post-war rehabilitation, the authorities are contemplating the inauguration of a course which will consist of two years of academic training and six months of hospital internship.
The purpose of the course is to furnish such a training that graduates may be qualified to act as physio-therapists in hospitals, institutions and private homes.
The work of a duly qualified physio-therapist consists in using, under the direction of a physician or surgeon, natural forces such as light, heat, electricity and water with muscle re-education, in the treatment of disease and injury. The course is designed primarily, to study more thoroughly the human organism, dealing with health and disease of the body.
Throughout the course, practical hospital instruction will be conducted in the various hospitals in the city. The course is expected to draw many students throughout the Dominion as the one only other school is being conducted at the University of Toronto, for a capacity attendance.
On completion of the course, graduates will receive a certificate in physical therapy from McGill.

NEED HELP FINDING THREE MISSING RELATIVES (2 MINORS) IN VANCOUVER, CANADA
aunt's abusive husband fled canada, leaving them desolate and i have no info on her or her two young children, please tell me where to contact to find them
Please reblog for reach. For context, my mother and I live in London as passport holders/citizens while my missing aunt and her children have recently moved to Vancouver, Canada. I am not asking for donations, just advice, please please please reblog/let me know what we can do to find my vulnerable relatives in another country.
My maternal aunt and her family moved to Vancouver from Iran in the past year but I am unsure when she moved due to my mother being estranged with her and my grandmother. I also don't know what status they have there.
My grandfather passed and my mother contacted my grandmother and found out that my aunt and her family moved to Canada. After moving to Canada, my aunt's abusive husband physically attacked her and her 12 year old son (possibly the youngest child too?) and fled to Turkey before he could be tried in court. My grandma won't tell me or my mother where my cousins and aunt are. They don't have our details and we don't have theirs.
PLEASE if anyone knows how or which authorities to contact to find relatives in Canada, let me know. My cousins are children, two boys, one is 12, the other is very young (around 6), they don't know English and have been abused by their father, I am worried sick. I don't know if my aunt is in hospital right now, my grandma vaguely said 'she's getting physiotherapy' but we didn't get any more info since my grandma has now gone no-contact after my mother asked if the children were possibly in foster care (so I'm guessing that's a yes?). She also hasn't given us my aunt's number, address or even told us if she is in hospital or not, we also have no update on their mental health or physical health. PLEASE if you know where I can contact to find my aunt and her children, I would be SO grateful. Thank you, I will do anything for my aunt and her children to just be safe and be able to receive support from us.
I know there are bigger things going on in the world but please let me know what to do or share this so someone who has any clue what to do can help.

i just sprinted across campus to escape the rain, and now i want to talk about my experiences as a cane user while i remember how to breathe again.
i started using a cane 4 years ago, at the end of elementary school. i’ve been chronically disabled (likely fibromyalgia, but currently diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome; it’s an inaccurate diagnosis, but at least it’s something) my entire life—i struggled to sit cross-legged in kindergarten because it hurt too much, and the first accommodation i ever needed was permission to sit in a normal chair during circle time. i was born early, and both of my parents had issues with their legs in their lives; my father as a child learning to walk, and my mother in her teens, until she got knee surgery when she was 19, but neither were the same as what i have.
i’ve always been an indoor person. i’ve never enjoyed sports, but to this day i don’t know if that’s because i genuinely don’t like them, or because i always end up hurt. so my parents always thought i was just lazy and exaggerating and needed to get in shape. the third one always makes me laugh. when i look at myself in the mirror, i can count all of my ribs. i inherited it from my dad; his nickname was ‘rice’ in high school because he was white and skinny. maybe i’ll grow out of it, i don’t know. people tell me i look sick, and it kind of sucks to tell them that they’re right.
the old pastor at the church i grew up in was a professional volleyball player. there was an inter-church volleyball tournament held every year, and monthly volleyball games within the congregation. when i was in elementary school, i loved it. i loved volleyball more than any other sport i’d ever played; for the most part, i didn’t have to run anywhere, and that was what made the difference. and players were swapped around a lot, so i got a lot of breaks, and it seemed like... maybe i had just been lazy. maybe this was my lucky break.
and my parents signed me up for volleyball camp. i don’t remember how old i was—maybe twelve, thirteen? i could do the math, but my brain is too exhausted. it was only a week long. we did drills, we played games; every day i went back to my parents sobbing and exhausted, with burning red marks on my arms, barely able to stand and far worse than any other child there, even the other ‘lazy’ ones. that was the moment everyone in my life finally realized that something was wrong.
thus started a long, frustrating process and the wonders of the canadian healthcare system.
people love to compliment canada’s healthcare. they love to compare it to usamerica’s, they love to stand on their soapbox and say how great it is— i can always tell whether those people are disabled or not. because, yes. there are a lot of pros. but anybody who preaches that it’s wonderful and flawless will get my cane to their shins. because the reality is, the wait lists span years, and even when you live five minutes away from one of the best youth hospitals in the country, maybe even north america, sometimes they’ll put you through hell for three years straight, then give you the wrong diagnosis, throw an attempt at fixing you at the wall that doesn’t work, and then expect you to move on with your life.
i only have two vivid memories of that three-year process while i was still in elementary school: the beginning, and the end. my first major specialist appointment was with a neurologist. he stuck pins in my leg and arm and sent electric shocks through them to evaluate muscle responses. it was one of the worst pains i’ve ever felt. to this day, i can’t sustain a static shock without my leg buckling or my hand seizing up. my mom held my hand, and i was screaming; i still cry when i think about it. the test came back with nothing.
the end was when i finally saw a physiotherapist. at the time, it felt like a miracle; he spoke to me for what seemed like only ten, fifteen minutes, and gave me a diagnosis and a physiotherapy plan. that was in 2021. the physiotherapy turned out to be hell; i only lasted a few months, even doing the most basic of exercises, and my parents grew sour at the idea of driving me to the other end of the city on a regular basis. so that all shattered into nothingness.
but that’s all just an aside: the real point is, the first time i used a cane was on a school trip to a large city, at the end of elementary school. it was going to involve a lot of walking; something i knew by that point would be difficult. and so my mother gave me a gift. an old, simple, dark red, wooden cane. the same one she’d used in her teen years before her surgery, and kept just in case. i genuinely don’t know if it’s good or not; i don’t know if i could afford a better one. i’m still using it. i think buying a new one would make the reality too real—that i will not get a magic fix, like my mother did.
on that trip, my very first time using a cane, with my grade eight class, was the also the first time that anybody made fun of it. while walking through the city in small groups, another boy in my class called me a grandma from across the street. i ran after him and hit him (not hard) with it, and he kept his mouth shut for the rest of the trip.
when i started grade nine, my high school was a twenty-to-thirty minute walk from my house. (another aside, shorter this time: after almost every other form of exercise was slowly nixed out of my life, walking became my everything. it still kills, but it’s better than anything else.) and it was too much. by the time i reached school every day, i was unable to stand for the national anthem. that was when the cane became a regular part of my life; i took it with me every day for support while i walked, and even when i didn’t need it, it made my disability somewhat more visible. the respectful people saw it and realized that there was something wrong with me. the assholes saw it and were assholes.
here’s another thing about me: i used to have a cousin. i have a lot of cousins, actually, but the one in question was almost my twin. we were born in the same week, and shared a birthday every year growing up, and looked nearly identical—when our hair was the same length, that is. he and i were complete opposites in most other respects; i was a quiet, well-behaved (read: neurodivergent) kid, and he was a loud, trouble-making (read: neurodivergent) kid. but we got along. and we went to the same high school, and it always stunned people to find out that we were cousins.
in grade nine one of my cousin’s friends made fun of my cane, in front of him and me. my cousin shoved his own friend against a locker and threatened him because of it. i wasn’t made fun of for my cane at that school for the rest of my time there (unless you count the things that people say when they don’t mean to be mean, but have also never witnessed someone my age with a cane before. i don’t, but they still hurt.)
my cousin’s gone now. he overdosed on xanax and killed himself in october. it’s my fondest memory of him, when he turned on his own friend to defend me. i didn’t see him for two years before he passed because of covid quarantines and precautions. i genuinely don’t remember the last time i did see him.
and here’s one last thing: people think that growing up disabled with a parent that had suffered similarly would make things easier. but it was the opposite. because my mother wasn’t chronically disabled. she had horrible knee problems that were fixed after years of physiotherapy and a major operation. she was also labeled as gifted and diagnosed with something i forget the name of, which means that it takes more effort for her to perform tasks than it does for other people. and all that has done is this:
a more recent story. i’m currently spending a month living in québec on a university campus. initially, i was slotted to be staying in an off-campus apartment; they moved me to a residence building before i arrived because they knew of my disability. my room is on the fourth floor. there is no elevator. i wonder every day if my would-have-been apartment would have had less stairs.
my mother drove me there. when we arrived, she carried my suitcase up the stairs for me, because i was incapable of doing so myself. and when i complained, mostly lightheartedly—“oh, doing these stairs is going to suck all month”—she turned on me and told me that when she had been just a little bit older than me, she’d done a program in québec and lived on the third floor with no elevator, and she’d just had major knee surgery. and she’d been fine.
it was nothing for her. i still remember her exact words, four weeks later. i don’t know if she’ll ever truly take me seriously, because to her, she was disabled too, and she got through it. i’ve yet to find a way to convince her that it’s different. that not everything has a magic cure if you just work through it.
i’m eighteen now. she was nineteen when she had knee surgery. maybe when i turn nineteen, i’ll finally get a new cane. it’ll be symbolic, of something. i don’t know what. hopefully i’ll figure it out.

Difficulties Part 1
I usually keep pretty well to Austen or British literature of the last century, but as Jane Austen is very concerned with the plight of women, I wanted to share two small things that happened to me, that impress upon me the difficulty living in the world as a woman.
I had a job that I really loved at a university in Canada. I was unionized, had unlimited sick days, medical benefits, paid time off, a pension, and reasonable compensation. After about two years at this job I left for maternity leave, which in my country was 1 year at half pay. I was worried however, because my department had a nasty habit of laying off women during mat leave. This would usually be illegal, but research work is all based on grants and contracts, so it can happen more easily in my field than in others.
I was anxious about going back to work, but at the 10 month mark my boss emailed and asked if I could come back early. I agreed, partially because I was bored but also because I was worried I might lose my position if I didn’t go back. So I went back 3 days a week (I had actually started at this job 3 days a week and moved to five over time) and my son went to a great little home daycare. I made it clear to my manager that as I had a 2 hours a day commute, I didn’t want to work more days. I thought she would understand as she had also worked part time when she had young children.
2 months in, I was laid off. I was only 2 months away from my contract becoming permanent, something that happened automatically after 3 years. I also had worked so few hours that it was impossible for me to collect employment insurance. It turned out they just wanted me to cover a three month leave of another staff member.
Now I feel I must justify myself, I was good at my job. When the news got around, I was approached by several people I had worked with who offered themselves as references. One person even swore when she realized she’d have to train someone new on the complicated medical software that I had mastered (just ask a nurse or doctor how user friendly their medical records program is...). Even though they were not required to, many of the doctors I worked with still included my name on their published research papers.
Anyway, we were in a terrible position as a family. My husband and I had just purchased a new house, since my job had seemed secure. I fortunately had about a month’s vacation pay as a buffer, but that was it. My daycare graciously let me take my son out until I found another job, if I had lost my space it would have been worse. I desperately applied for jobs and eventually accepted one with the same employer that was not unionized.
I lost my pension, sick days, medical benefits, and paid vacation and was only given about 2 dollars more an hour in this new job. I never would have accepted it if I hadn’t been so desperate.
And the worst part is, the people who did this to me were all women. My manager and supervisor were both women. And they didn’t care. The one even seemed surprised that I was angry at the final meeting. She said it was best for the projects. I highly doubt it.
Anyway, this is my little proof that having a uterus and being a mother who wants to spend time with her child still can destroy your career and that you can’t rely on the compassion or humanity of your superiors.
Note: Why do I need medical benefits? I live in Canada, but we have a strange form of universal healthcare that covers all hospital and doctor visits, but not eye, dental, most therapy/mental health care or most medication. So for a person my age at the time, the most commonly covered would be things like birth control, glasses, dental visits, and physiotherapy.
And yes, this creates problems were someone with say, type two diabetes can’t afford their very cheap meds and instead ends up in the ER frequently which is super expensive. We have plans where if you are poor enough you get free medication but it’s a mess and honestly they need to fix it.

Where I've been, Where I am, Where I'm going.
I am sorry there's been radio silence for so long! I've just had a lot going on in my life, both good and bad. In a nutshell, for those of you who don't want the nitty-gritty, I spent a week in the hospital in early December and am still sort of recovering despite it nearly being July; I travelled a ton in February through April; I got engaged; I am currently back home prepping for a wedding, but will be moving across the continent once I'm legally able to. If you're curious and want the deets, keep reading. There's a bit of gory medical detail in the first paragraph below, but no photos, don't worry. On December 12th, I a bit careless in rushing down the stairs from my kitchen to my room. I slipped and ended up with an open fracture of the tibia and fibula. The two long bones in my lower right leg snapped and burst out of the front of my shin. Yes, it was as awful as it sounds. I was incredibly lucky to have a rod put in the same night, and spent a week in the hospital.  I also broke two bones in my left foot and sprained my left ankle, so I was basically bedridden for quite a while. I had surgery and staples and bandages all over my right leg (they went in at the knee so that was knocked out of commission too), and an air cast on my left foot. It took a lot of physiotherapy and a lot of painkillers, but eventually I was able to get around on crutches. Now I'm mostly not using any aids, but I will keep a cane with me when I go out just to be safe. But standing up and wrestling with the mannequin is still not quite in my wheelhouse, I'm afraid. While I was dealing with all of this, I flew back down to California. I will say, the airlines and airport staff were all huge sweethearts and very helpful. I was given extra legroom and wheelchair escorts everywhere, and I'm immensely grateful. Once in California, Keith took me out for a beautiful dinner at the first restaurant we had a real date at, and proposed! Of course I said yes! It was nice to have something happy and hopeful to think about for a bit. In March we went to PAXEast with his job, which was both fun and incredibly stressful. In April I finally met his lovely parents, and that was a much more relaxing trip. But not only was I away from my home here in Montreal, but also away from my home in California. I did manage to get something very cool from PAXEast that I will be reviewing soon, so keep an eye out. I came back home about a month ago, and we had to say goodbye to one of our kitties not long after that, which threw my motivation for a loop. With all that said, I have some things drafted up and planned for the near future, and I really appreciate anyone who's stuck around and been so incredibly patient with me! Since I've found a beautiful deep teal furisode that actually fits my giant self, hopefully one of those things is a kimono engagement photoshoot, if I can get my other half to participate... I will try to post as regularly and actively as I can while preparing for a wedding as well as starting the process of moving from Eastern Canada to California. Once I move, I will not have access to my kimono collection for a while, but we're working towards eventually having a house with space for it. I can't wait to share the next steps of my life with you all and I hope you'll come on this crazy next stage with me! Read the full article

Canada's top health insurance providers In 2023
Tumblr media
Canada’s healthcare system is regarded as one of the best in the world, providing all citizens and permanent residents free access to emergency care and regular doctor visits. However, there are still certain services that Medicare – the country’s universal health coverage – does not cover – including eye and dental care, outpatient prescription drugs, rehabilitation services, and private hospital rooms – which Canadians need to pay for.
So, it is not surprising that, although not required, nearly 70% of Canadians have taken out supplemental private health coverage, according to the latest figures from the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA). Of these, 90% were purchased through group plans.
Overall, the nation’s health and life insurance providers paid out $30.4 billion in supplementary health benefits, $8.8 billion in disability claims, and $1.6 billion for accidental death and dismemberment, critical illness, and long-term care coverage last year, the association’s data also revealed. These numbers indicate a thriving private health insurance market in a country where the public health system already provides a good level of support for acute and accident care.
How does Canada’s healthcare system work?
Canada has a “decentralized, universal, publicly funded health system,” according to the Commonwealth Fund, a private nonprofit group that supports independent research on health care issues and provides grants aimed at improving the country’s health system.
“Health care is funded and administered primarily by the country’s 13 provinces and territories,” the organization explained. “Each has its own insurance plan, and each receives cash assistance from the federal government on a per-capita basis.”
The group added that while benefits and delivery approaches vary, all Canadian citizens and permanent residents receive “medically necessary hospital and physician services free at the point of use.”
However, not everything is covered by Medicare. According to the personal finance website money Genius, the public health system provides universal access to about 70% of a Canadian’s medical needs. The rest must be paid out of pocket or covered by supplemental private insurance.
What does Canada’s universal healthcare system cover?
The country’s public healthcare system covers many of the “basics.” These include:
Doctor and hospital visits
Diagnostics and examinations
Surgeries and treatments
Standard accommodations in the hospital (including care, food, and prescriptions)
Medically necessary dental surgeries
Eye examinations for Canadians aged under 18 or over 65
Each province and territory implement their own rules when it comes to health coverage, so the exclusions may vary. For the following items and services, private health insurance may be necessary to obtain cover, depending on where a person resides.
Outpatient prescription medications
Dental care
Psychological services
Massage therapy
Physiotherapy
Private hospital room stays
Ambulance and EMT services
Prescription eyeglasses
Medical equipment (including wheelchairs, crutches, and leg braces)
Long-term care insurance has long been lacking in the country, another thing to be aware of.
