Difficulties Part 1
I usually keep pretty well to Austen or British literature of the last century, but as Jane Austen is very concerned with the plight of women, I wanted to share two small things that happened to me, that impress upon me the difficulty living in the world as a woman.
I had a job that I really loved at a university in Canada. I was unionized, had unlimited sick days, medical benefits, paid time off, a pension, and reasonable compensation. After about two years at this job I left for maternity leave, which in my country was 1 year at half pay. I was worried however, because my department had a nasty habit of laying off women during mat leave. This would usually be illegal, but research work is all based on grants and contracts, so it can happen more easily in my field than in others.
I was anxious about going back to work, but at the 10 month mark my boss emailed and asked if I could come back early. I agreed, partially because I was bored but also because I was worried I might lose my position if I didn’t go back. So I went back 3 days a week (I had actually started at this job 3 days a week and moved to five over time) and my son went to a great little home daycare. I made it clear to my manager that as I had a 2 hours a day commute, I didn’t want to work more days. I thought she would understand as she had also worked part time when she had young children.
2 months in, I was laid off. I was only 2 months away from my contract becoming permanent, something that happened automatically after 3 years. I also had worked so few hours that it was impossible for me to collect employment insurance. It turned out they just wanted me to cover a three month leave of another staff member.
Now I feel I must justify myself, I was good at my job. When the news got around, I was approached by several people I had worked with who offered themselves as references. One person even swore when she realized she’d have to train someone new on the complicated medical software that I had mastered (just ask a nurse or doctor how user friendly their medical records program is...). Even though they were not required to, many of the doctors I worked with still included my name on their published research papers.
Anyway, we were in a terrible position as a family. My husband and I had just purchased a new house, since my job had seemed secure. I fortunately had about a month’s vacation pay as a buffer, but that was it. My daycare graciously let me take my son out until I found another job, if I had lost my space it would have been worse. I desperately applied for jobs and eventually accepted one with the same employer that was not unionized.
I lost my pension, sick days, medical benefits, and paid vacation and was only given about 2 dollars more an hour in this new job. I never would have accepted it if I hadn’t been so desperate.
And the worst part is, the people who did this to me were all women. My manager and supervisor were both women. And they didn’t care. The one even seemed surprised that I was angry at the final meeting. She said it was best for the projects. I highly doubt it.
Anyway, this is my little proof that having a uterus and being a mother who wants to spend time with her child still can destroy your career and that you can’t rely on the compassion or humanity of your superiors.
Note: Why do I need medical benefits? I live in Canada, but we have a strange form of universal healthcare that covers all hospital and doctor visits, but not eye, dental, most therapy/mental health care or most medication. So for a person my age at the time, the most commonly covered would be things like birth control, glasses, dental visits, and physiotherapy.
And yes, this creates problems were someone with say, type two diabetes can’t afford their very cheap meds and instead ends up in the ER frequently which is super expensive. We have plans where if you are poor enough you get free medication but it’s a mess and honestly they need to fix it.

Exploring Retirement Homes in Ottawa: Amenities, Activities, and More
Tumblr media
Ottawa, the picturesque capital of Canada, is not only known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty but also for its high standard of living. As the population ages, more and more seniors are seeking retirement options that offer comfort, community, and convenience. In Ottawa, retirement homes have evolved to meet these needs, providing a wide range of amenities and activities that cater to the diverse interests and lifestyles of their residents.
Whether you're considering a retirement home for yourself or a loved one, understanding what Ottawa’s retirement homes have to offer is crucial. This blog post delves into the amenities, activities, and overall living experience in Ottawa's retirement communities.
A Spectrum of Amenities
Modern retirement homes in Ottawa are designed to be more than just places to live—they're communities where residents can enjoy a high quality of life. The amenities provided are often comparable to those found in luxury hotels, and they cater to both comfort and convenience.
1. Dining Options
Dining is a critical component of the retirement living experience. Most retirement homes in Ottawa offer restaurant-style dining with gourmet meals prepared by professional chefs. Residents can enjoy a variety of cuisines, with menus that change regularly to reflect seasonal ingredients and dietary preferences. Many retirement homes also offer private dining rooms for special occasions, and some even have cafes or bistros where residents can grab a coffee or a snack.
2. Healthcare Services
Access to healthcare is a top priority in any retirement community. Ottawa’s retirement homes often have on-site healthcare services, including regular visits from doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Many homes also offer physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and even dental services. For those requiring more extensive care, assisted living or memory care units are available, ensuring that all residents have access to the care they need.
3. Fitness and Wellness Centers
Staying active is crucial for maintaining health and well-being in retirement. Many retirement homes in Ottawa feature state-of-the-art fitness centers equipped with exercise machines, weights, and space for group classes such as yoga, tai chi, or aerobics. Additionally, wellness centers often offer services like massage therapy, acupuncture, and holistic treatments. These facilities encourage residents to stay active and healthy, contributing to a better quality of life.
4. Social and Recreational Spaces
Social interaction is a key component of a happy and fulfilling retirement. Ottawa’s retirement homes provide various spaces designed to foster community engagement, including libraries, game rooms, art studios, and theaters. Many homes also have beautifully landscaped gardens, walking paths, and outdoor patios where residents can relax or socialize with friends.
5. Transportation Services
Convenience is another important factor for many retirees. Most retirement homes in Ottawa offer transportation services for residents, making it easy to get to appointments, shopping centers, or cultural events in the city. These services provide peace of mind for residents who no longer drive or prefer not to deal with the hassle of city traffic.
A Wide Range of Activities
Ottawa’s retirement homes go beyond just providing amenities; they offer a rich array of activities designed to keep residents engaged, active, and entertained. These activities cater to a variety of interests, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
1. Cultural and Educational Programs
For those who love to learn, many retirement homes in Ottawa offer cultural and educational programs. These can include guest lectures, language classes, book clubs, and even courses in art, history, or technology. Some retirement homes partner with local universities or cultural institutions to bring in experts for special presentations or workshops, allowing residents to continue their lifelong learning journey.
2. Fitness and Wellness Activities
In addition to fitness centers, many retirement homes offer organized fitness classes tailored to seniors' needs and abilities. These might include water aerobics, chair yoga, or walking clubs. Wellness activities such as meditation, mindfulness sessions, and stress management workshops are also popular, helping residents maintain both their physical and mental health.
3. Social Events and Clubs
Social events are a staple in Ottawa’s retirement homes. From themed parties and holiday celebrations to movie nights and cocktail hours, there’s always something happening. Many homes also have resident-led clubs based on shared interests, such as gardening, knitting, bridge, or photography. These clubs offer a great way for residents to connect with others who share similar hobbies.
4. Outings and Excursions
Living in Ottawa means being surrounded by cultural, historical, and natural attractions. Many retirement homes organize regular outings to museums, theaters, parks, and local events. These excursions allow residents to explore the city and stay connected to the broader community, all while enjoying the convenience of organized transportation and group discounts.
5. Volunteer Opportunities
Giving back to the community is important to many retirees, and Ottawa’s retirement homes support this by offering various volunteer opportunities. Whether it’s mentoring young people, participating in charity events, or helping out with community projects, these activities provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
The Ottawa Advantage
Choosing a retirement home in Ottawa comes with unique advantages. The city’s vibrant arts and cultural scene, combined with its natural beauty and high standard of living, make it an ideal place to retire. Ottawa’s retirement homes are designed to take full advantage of these attributes, offering residents a lifestyle that is both enriching and comfortable.
1. Proximity to Healthcare
Ottawa is home to some of Canada’s top hospitals and healthcare facilities. This proximity ensures that residents of Ottawa’s retirement homes have easy access to specialized medical care if needed. Many retirement communities are located near these facilities, providing peace of mind for residents and their families.
2. Cultural and Recreational Opportunities
Ottawa’s rich cultural heritage and abundant recreational opportunities enhance the retirement experience. The city boasts numerous museums, galleries, theaters, and festivals, providing endless opportunities for cultural enrichment. The Ottawa River and nearby Gatineau Park offer stunning natural landscapes for outdoor activities like hiking, bird watching, and boating.
3. A Sense of Community
Ottawa is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, which extends to its retirement communities. Many residents find that they quickly become part of a close-knit community, where neighbors become friends, and there’s always someone to share a meal, a game, or a conversation with.
Finding the Right Fit
With so many options available, finding the right retirement home in Ottawa can seem overwhelming. It’s important to consider your or your loved one’s specific needs and preferences when exploring different communities. Visiting multiple retirement homes, talking to current residents, and getting a feel for the community’s atmosphere are essential steps in making an informed decision.
1. Assessing Care Needs
Consider the level of care that might be needed now or in the future. Some retirement homes offer a continuum of care, from independent living to assisted living and memory care. This can be a good option if you want to stay in one place as your needs change.
2. Location
Think about the location of the retirement home in relation to family, friends, and favorite activities. Being close to loved ones or in a familiar neighborhood can make the transition to retirement living easier.
3. Budget
Cost is a significant factor when choosing a retirement home. Ottawa’s retirement homes range from moderately priced to luxury options, so it’s important to find a community that fits within your budget while still offering the amenities and care you desire.
4. Community Culture
Every retirement home has its own unique culture and vibe. Some are more active and social, while others are quieter and more laid-back. Visiting the community and talking to residents can give you a sense of whether it’s the right fit for your personality and lifestyle.
Conclusion
Exploring retirement homes in Ottawa reveals a wide array of options that cater to different lifestyles, needs, and preferences. From luxurious amenities and diverse activities to a strong sense of community and proximity to world-class healthcare, Ottawa’s retirement homes offer a quality of life that makes retirement a fulfilling and enjoyable stage of life.
As you consider your options, remember that the best retirement home is one that aligns with your values, needs, and desires. Whether you’re looking for a vibrant community with plenty of social activities or a quiet retreat with access to nature, Ottawa has a retirement home that’s perfect for you.

Honestly one of the biggest if not THE biggest turning points in my life was when I finally realized that "the human experience is wretched and worthless and the human body is inherently agony to live in" is wrong, and instead: "The human experience isn't inherently wretched and worthless and the human body isn't inherently misery to live in, however the one I'm stuck with? The body I'm trapped in? THAT ONE SURE IS."
The former belief, the only cure is death. The current belief: there is a cure. Changing the body.
Like, just realizing with hindsight that human body isn't the problem, what's wrong with MINE is the problem. Improved my outlook on life.
Now, the next improvement, the next turning point, is I have to go through the trouble of curing all the shit that can be cured, working around all the shit that can't be cured but can be worked around, and trying to find acceptance in the things that cannot be changed. Which is obviously extremely fucking hard when you are not just disabled but disabled in a way that makes it very hard to jump through society's various hoops to get things.
My existence is inherently hostile and I have to work hard to make it less hostile. That sorta shit.
And unfortunately I am very exhausted from an existence that is inherently hostile. So exhausted that working hard is often out of the question.
Feedback loop of forced to exist in a state of suffering.
But I have summed the issue down to its most simplistic description and hopefully that accounts for something.
Honestly why are waiting lists for surgeries so goddamn long (Canada) why are waiting lists for psychiatrists so long (doctor shortage) why are my doctor appointments so far spaced out (doctor shortage) it's fucking bullshit. If I was one of the lucky people who didn't have an inherently agony human body experience this would be much less of an issue for me. And that's the big thing. It's not fucking fair. I didn't chose to download the shitty version before I was born. I didn't ask for this garbage. My life is made from the wretched slop discarded when the good and proper and healthy and fun human lives are made.
I was having such a good past few days and then STOMACH FROM HELL decided it was time to remind me of how much life sucks and I want to die.
I was having a good fucking time. And this stupid body went "fuck you because I said so. I exist to bring you suffering" and then it fucking did.
Good news is doctor appointment on the 10th and filling new prescription that day hopefully too. Medicine that will actually help things improve. Ghhhhh
Honestly I wish I could just blackout and jump straight to after my first surgery when I'm doing physiotherapy and able to go to the gym again.
*smashing shit* Andy wamt hims surgery!!!
I think if I actually had a date for the damn thing this would be easier. But I fucking don't!!!
Hoping I at least feel somewhat better in time for the appointment. Hoping this doesn't destroy all my progress of having a good time leading up to today.
It was a nice feeling to have a period that was enjoyable to exist within. I want that more often. Shame it's so fucking hard to get.
No wonder the allure of lying in bed and trying to dream as much as possible is so strong. That's the closest I can come to not having the awful life™️ and imagining that I'm all better.
Hnnn
Anyways, sorry my adventure into having fun is seemingly over now. Courtesy of the bad meat™️ my quest for the good meat™️ must carry on.

Whether it's a slip-and-fall accident or repetitive stress injury, workplace fatalities have long-lasting emotional and physical consequences on injured persons. Statists show that falls from heights, slips, overexertion & muscle strains, trips, and falls are the most common reasons and cause more than 50% of workplace injuries in Canada.
Tumblr media
Due to these injuries, people may be unable to start work quickly and are affected financially and physically. But with the best physiotherapy in Mississauga, they can recover from the injuries and return to their everyday life quickly. Physiotherapists can help them restore function, reduce pain, and increase their range of motion. In this article, we have discussed how physiotherapy treats workplace injuries effectively.
Workplace Injuries Cause Several Physical Problems

Canada's top health insurance providers In 2023
Tumblr media
Canada’s healthcare system is regarded as one of the best in the world, providing all citizens and permanent residents free access to emergency care and regular doctor visits. However, there are still certain services that Medicare – the country’s universal health coverage – does not cover – including eye and dental care, outpatient prescription drugs, rehabilitation services, and private hospital rooms – which Canadians need to pay for.
So, it is not surprising that, although not required, nearly 70% of Canadians have taken out supplemental private health coverage, according to the latest figures from the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA). Of these, 90% were purchased through group plans.
Overall, the nation’s health and life insurance providers paid out $30.4 billion in supplementary health benefits, $8.8 billion in disability claims, and $1.6 billion for accidental death and dismemberment, critical illness, and long-term care coverage last year, the association’s data also revealed. These numbers indicate a thriving private health insurance market in a country where the public health system already provides a good level of support for acute and accident care.
How does Canada’s healthcare system work?
Canada has a “decentralized, universal, publicly funded health system,” according to the Commonwealth Fund, a private nonprofit group that supports independent research on health care issues and provides grants aimed at improving the country’s health system.
“Health care is funded and administered primarily by the country’s 13 provinces and territories,” the organization explained. “Each has its own insurance plan, and each receives cash assistance from the federal government on a per-capita basis.”
The group added that while benefits and delivery approaches vary, all Canadian citizens and permanent residents receive “medically necessary hospital and physician services free at the point of use.”
However, not everything is covered by Medicare. According to the personal finance website money Genius, the public health system provides universal access to about 70% of a Canadian’s medical needs. The rest must be paid out of pocket or covered by supplemental private insurance.
What does Canada’s universal healthcare system cover?
The country’s public healthcare system covers many of the “basics.” These include:

Christmas Eve (Day 14)
It sure doesn’t feel like Christmas. Seeing all of the winter, snowy fun back home couldn’t be different than our sunny 25 degree days. Where we wake up to monkeys running across our roof, the dogs barking when the wart hogs are in the yard, the extremely loud call of the Hadeda (a type of ibis, bird) and of course the screech of the tree hyrax. Everything is so different! That said, we have all of the fixings for tomorrow’s turkey dinner.
We went to drinks at friend’s of Aileen and JD’s last night and had a lovely time discussing life in Kenya. You have to be tough to live here! They have a cobra living in their wood pile however, they find it doesn’t really bother them or their dogs so its not an issue!?!? They also let us know that there is a leopard in the area that took someone’s small dog yesterday!! So of course I was freaking out when we came home and none of the dogs were around! Thankfully they were next door watching a movie with the neighbours.
Aileen was off today so we went on a girls shopping trip and to meet one of the kids that she supports. We combed through the market looking for souvenirs and then attempting to barter on prices. I think we all found some lovely things to bring home.
A highlight for me was meeting Jackson and Lydia as I find their story so daunting and yet inspiring. Lydia is Jackson’s grandmother; Jackson is 12 and has Cerebral Palsy. As they are from Kibera, the slums of Nairobi, they have really fallen through the not so well supported cracks of the medical system and the lacking social support net. Jackson’s mom left and therefore he is in Grandma’s care along with six other children she is supporting as they don’t have parents on the scene. Aileen was supporting Jackson with his physiotherapy needs (as well as medications and trips to the doctor) but realized that he needed more than a visit every two weeks and through a grant was able to have his needs and others recognized by the school hiring a full time physio that Aileen and another physio are mentoring as she is new to the profession. Jackson is now able to sit up on his own and has some head control which he didn’t have until relatively recently which means he is starting to feed himself! Without his Grandma’s dedication and commitment to him, it is likely he would have been just left on the floor during the day while his parent went to work so the fact that he is actually able to see a doctor, receive regular treatment and schooling is amazing. We take so much for granted and this really shows how lucky and privileged we are to have been born in Canada and for me to have the family I do.
On to the lighter side, while we were waiting, I noticed a sign that with our grocery store points we could have a goat! Save on Foods doesn’t offer that!!
We spent the later part of the afternoon enjoying a friend’s pool which was a great way to cool off in a hot Nairobi afternoon!
Aileen and JD joined us for dinner at Talana’s (the house we are staying at) where we used the norad tracker to see where Santa was and to put out some treats for Santa and the reindeer. As Amira, the Elf on the Shelf hasn’t been flying back and forth to the North Pole and the kids didn’t write a letter to Santa, Tamsyn is pretty concerned that he might not know where to find her.

Why should Canadians consider Bond University’s Doctor of Physiotherapy program?
In May 2007, Bond University introduced Australia’s first entry-level Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) degree. The two-year program was developed in response to the critical shortage of qualified practitioners identified by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and various State and Commonwealth health authorities.
The Bond DPT adopts a holistic problem-based learning approach adapted from the highly successful model developed by Canada’s McMaster University. By initially limiting the intake to 20 students and working extensively with their network of industry colleagues, Bond was able to guarantee high-quality clinical places for all students and ensure a one-on-one personalized approach to the academic learning process.
The two-year DPT at Bond is an accelerated degree, so the program runs through three semesters per year instead of just two, which means you’ll graduate a year ahead of the rest.

How to Find the Best Physiotherapy Clinics
In order to find the best physiotherapy Sydney clinics, you need to look at the qualifications of the therapists. They should be certified and licensed. They should be able to answer any questions you have and diagnose your body properly. They should also be willing to spend time talking with you about your medical history and family health issues. Physiotherapy plays an important role in rehabilitation after surgery.
A good physiotherapist will know the best exercises to perform on your body. It's important to find exercises that you'll want to perform and will keep you motivated. They will be able to help you get back on track if you get off track. They'll also make sure that you're doing the exercises correctly so that you get the most benefit.
Some physiotherapists specialize in particular conditions. For instance, a physiotherapist who specializes in cardio-respiratory care can help patients recover from chest infections, traumatic injuries, and chronic cardiac and respiratory conditions. Another type of physiotherapy is pediatric physiotherapy, which focuses on preventing injuries and helping children recover from illnesses. It's also beneficial for people who suffer from a condition that affects their mobility or flexibility.
Physiotherapy is a regulated profession in Canada and the US. It's also a very competitive field. Because of the high demand for physiotherapists, there are many universities offering physiotherapy courses. Admission requirements for top physiotherapy programs are high, so students must have excellent academic records and high GPA and GRE scores to be admitted.
Physiotherapists can work in hospitals, clinics, or rehabilitation centers. They may work with doctors to assess patient progress and provide feedback. Sometimes, they notice problems while working with patients. Sometimes, they'll even refer their patients to doctors for specific ailments. They may also work independently to help patients who have chronic illnesses.
