Another one this time with multiple characters. I made using a reference from Otaiku. The used the image with text on Spellai. The the one on the right is Ranma and the left is picolet chardin. Between them is their 16 year old daughter.

I know Ranma tends to change into a girl to shoo off Akane's male suitor (usually Ryoga). But when I read Tsubasa Kurenai arc, I just realized, he turned to a guy to shoo off Akane's female suitor ? 🤣

Like, at first I thought Ranma only dated Tsubasa in his male form to make Tsubasa stop being obsessed with his girl form, but now that I read it again, maybe Ranma sent that challenge love letter bc he's jealous when Tsubasa started to swing towards Akane? 🤣

Kinda reminds me of the Dining Martial Arts arc. Yes, Ranma was stuck as Picolet's bride bc he wanted revenge for humiliating him in front of everyone, but the reason why he challenged Picolet in the first place was because Picolet claimed the Tendo girls (inc. Akane) as his wives. And he just cannot let Akane be the wife of someone else 🤣

Ranking the rivals in Ranma 1/2

A few disclaimers for this ranking; the requirements for this list are they have to have an arc dedicated for them and have feelings for either Ranma or Akane at some point (though I excluded that one cat who tries to marry Akane), characters who only Ranma/Akane have feelings for are not here (though I’m pretty sure that’s just Dr. Tofu), there are also some rivals of rivals who will not be included in this list like Tsubasa, this ranking isn’t of something in particular but rather it’s a combination of how much I like them, how good of a rival they are, and how much they make me laugh, and I would also like to say EVERY SINGLE person on this list is horrible besides ONE.

A quick honorable mention for Mousse

He is one of the main 6 rivals and often fights Ranma however he does not have feelings for Akane so he will not be in the ranking (but I love Mousse so much so he probably would have been high).

Now a dishonorable mention to Happosai

He technically meets the requirements but it could also be argued all he feels is lust (though with how shallow many of these characters are that could be sad for many). I also just find him so annoying so he’s not here.

Number 10 I have Picolet

Picolet is a rival for Akane and in love with Ranma. Honestly he’s just this low because I remember the least about him. He eats a lot and demanded to marry someone from the dojo because of another old promise. He’s just not funny to me, the big mouth thing creeps me out, and there was 0 interest from Ranma.

Number 9 is Sentaro

Sentaro is a rival for both Akane and Ranma and first has feelings for female Ranma, then Akane, and later moves on from both of them. Sentaro is kind of just an unremarkable character for me. He followes a lot of the same tropes as many other people in Ranma as he’s looking for a wife and looking for someone to beat someone else. I think he’s a little funny but he really had no chance with either of them. Akane was a little flattered when he called her graceful and everything but still no interest

Number 8 is Shampoo

Shampoo is a rival for Akane and is in love with Ranma. She probably should be higher because she gets some uncommon points of a little bit of interest from Ranma (and by interest I don’t mean actually romantic but just flustered by their looks or something) though that is pretty easily canceled out by the fact that Ranma really just doesn’t like her and is pretty annoyed by her. Usually a rival will have some sort of problem that they will need help with from Ranma or Akane and Ranma or Akane are able to be understanding and treat them normally but while Ranma helps Shampoo he is pretty consistently annoyed with her. Also if you know me I really don’t like Shampoo so…

Number 7 is Gosunkugi

Gosunkugi is a rival for Ranma and is in love with Akane. Gosunkugi’s role in the manga is a little different from the anime. In the anime he is introduced like past episode 100 as a new kid in school and later falls for Akane as she is nice to him. In the manga he is introduced pretty early on as Akane’s stalker who only starts interacting and trying to get with Akane once he figures out she is engaged to Ranma. It is also unclear how long he had been stalking Akane. A lot of Gosunkugi’s moments in early anime were replaced by that rat guy who helps out the Kuno household, in episodes like the Romeo and Juliet one. Though after the introduction their moments are pretty similar. I’m not a fan of him, he’s very creepy and the reason he is above the others is simply he makes me laugh more than them. Him using his last paper doll to make sure Akane just doesn’t hate him is so funny to me. He’s very stupid and ultimately harmless to Ranma and most Ranma’s annoyances from him are jealousy of Akane being nice to him.

Number 6 is Mikado

Mikado is a rival for both Ranma and Akane, though mostly Ranma, and has feelings for both of them. Mikado was originally going to be lower but he gets some points because he makes Akane flustered at some points because of his looks (though it’s canceled in the same way as Shampoo) and I think he can be a little funny. He’s one of the least devoted rivals as he claims he loves all women. Though he is the reason for a few of some of my favorite Rankane moments so that also helps him.

Number 5 is Kuno

Kuno is a rival for both Ranma and Akane and is in love with both of them. Kuno is one of the most consistent rivals in Ranma 1/2 and probably the second most prominent. I love Kuno so much, I think he’s so funny… and very… handsome… most of his points derive from how funny he is. He also gets a few interest or I suppose “getting along” points, specifically with Akane as there are a few moments where they are able to be chill and some of my favorites are where Akane will boss him around and Kuno will just do anything she asks. I really do wish he would just move on to Mariko, as I think they would be so cute, but Rumiko Takahashi has a real problem with change. I like to imagine in the far future they are together.

Number 4 is the other younger Kuno sibling, Kodachi

Kodachi is a rival to Akane and is in love with Ranma. I absolutely adore Kodachi, I think she is one of the funniest people in the whole series. She’s absolutely brutal and manipulative but surprisingly I think her feelings for Ranma are a lot more noble compared to other rivals. A lot of the others are just for duty or tradition in the need for a wife but Kodachi actually falls for Ranma after he saves her and that’s something I really appreciate about her. I am very sad she is one of the main 3 female rivals that gets the least amount of time.

Number 3 is Ukyo

Ukyo is a rival to Akane and is in love with Ranma. Ukyo is possibly the most manipulative people in the whole serious, while Shampoo resorts to various magical items Ukyo takes advantage of whatever predicament Ranma is in to force him to marry her. Ukyo is one of those character where I just don’t understand why she loves Ranma. She is one of the few people on this list who Ranma considers to be a friend which gives her a lot of points. She also gets MANY points because unlike a lot of the other female rivals she is able to be chill with Akane at some points.

Number 2 is Ryoga

Ryoga is a rival for Ranma and is in love with Akane. Ryoga is the first person most people will think of when you mention rivals in Ranma 1/2. Ryoga later gets a girlfriend however he sadly is still not able to completely move on from Akane. He is very creepy when you think about all the things he does as p-chan and that is my main problem with him. A lot of the time people will bring up him trying to kill Ranma. I think this argument is often taken out of context, it was a very comedic moment because Ranma was harassing him. He often tries to justify his own bad actions like using magical items similar to Shampoo. Just because you were a little hesitant to do so doesn’t mean you didn’t do it. He is used as a contrast to Ranma’s own feelings towards Akane in how he sees her as very soft and gentle and Ranma sees her as very aggressive and mean, though in truth she is both. He gets many more points than the others in the chance category as there are some moments where Akane considers him as a possible romantic partner. Also when Akane was mad at Ranma they go on a (very aggressive) date. I know I’ve been insulting him but I really do love Ryoga, I think he’s very silly.

NUMBER ONE IS OF COURSE SHINNOSUKE

Shinnosuke is a rival to Ranma and is in love with Akane. AAHAGAHAGAHAFGSHAGA I LOVE SHINNOSUKE SO MUCH. He is just the perfect man to me. He was so sweet to Akane, his feelings were so genuine and perfect. He treats her with such respect and absolutely adores her. He is the one rival in this whole manga/anime who I consider to be an actual good person. He is very forgetful yes but oh he wrote her name everywhere just so he wouldn’t forget it, he kept confessing to her because he forget he did. I don’t know why there’s always talk about Shampoo being better for Ranma or Ukyo being better for Ranma, they are clearly not but Shinnosuke? SHINNOSUKE?!?!? Oh I’m sorry I’m sorry if I was Akane and my crush waited so long to actually confess oh I would’ve folded oh I’m sorry I would’ve folded. He’s so handsome agahagaa. Ranma really needs to stop beefing with people with headbands… Ryoga… Shinnosuke… Ryu… I love you Shinnosuke. He is the perfect rival not just character wise but narrative wise as he makes Ranma realize that he does and has to love Akane unconditionally despite her own feelings. This is my favorite arc and I know it will be forever but I can’t wait until he’s in the new anime. If you are an anime only person and have not seen his OVA watch it now!!! It also has some great Rankane moments. Oh Shinnosuke I love you so muchhhhhh. I feel bad having to put him on this list because he is just so much better than all of the other rivals.

something ive had an idea for for ages is what if the old anime had a martial arts singing arc. you cant really do that in the manga so having it in the anime wouldve been perfect and all the vas can sing amazingly (listening to the doco albums rn lmao) so why not? btw i know hot songs contest exists but no. proper martial arts singing arc

but because hes ranma saotome and has an ego the size of the milky way he does a picolet and is like hmph ive gotta get better at this. im gonna go back. akane is shown to be able to sing well right so why not have her try help? would make for a cute rankane moment or something i havent thought out the details but ofc i cant miss that out

then ranma and akane together using the powers of love and singing do the rematch and beat pearl houzuki clone and live happily ever after or something idk

When you say that anime Ranma needs to be helped in situations where he should never need help, you are trying to apply logic to something that simply doesn't have any. How much challenge or danger a particular opponent or situation poses to Ranma is 100% determined by the plot (or the rule of funny) and has absolutely no internal logic to it of any kind. Look at all the times Ranma has fought Ryoga. Ryoga can be a strong opponent that Ranma struggles to overcome or a complete pushover or anywhere in between, determined entirely by the needs of the story at that particular moment.

Ranma learning not to let his hyper-competitive egotistical side rule him (and asking for help when he needs it is a part of that) is a big part of Ranma's character development over the course of the story, and it's in both the manga and the anime. Look at the Phoenix Pill arc. When he first meets her Ranma is completely outclassed by Cologne and he knows it, even if he won't admit it. He has to swallow his pride and accept her help to overcome the challenge she's set for him. Or look at Step Outside. Ranma starts getting competitive with a little kid, realizes the ridiculousness of it, comments on that out loud, and changes what he's doing. That's Ranma growing up, not having his character subverted.

Ranma is not meant to be some sort of invincible paragon of martial arts. When he develops a habit of claiming to have never lost at anything martial arts later on, it's funny because we've seen him loose so often.

It's not that girl Ranma is particularly sexualized in the anime, it's that Ranma over time becomes more comfortable with his girl half in general and in using his femininity to get what he wants. And that's also in both the anime and the manga. Take the Shishi Hokodan Arc. Ranma disguises himself as a random girl to try to learn the secrets of Ryoga's technique and introduces himself as, "Oh just someone who's been in love with you for a long time." That's going a lot further than the random compliments Ranma uses to butter up Ryoga in the waterproof soap episode. In point of fact female Ranma flirting with Ryoga in order to manipulate him is a constant throughout the story in both manga and anime. Or to look at a more admirable aspect of Ranma becoming more comfortable with his girl half, look at the Picolet arc. Ranma volunteers without any prompting from anyone to go to the Chardin chateaux in order to protect not just Akane but all the Tendos even knowing full well he'd have to live as a girl (and put up with Picolet's advances) for an extended period of time. Now *that* is something Ranma would have done a backflip into a volcano to avoid at the beginning of the story.

I find myself cringing (like foaming in the mouth and full-body twitching) when female Ranma asked screamed for Ryoga to help him. LIKE URGH—Ranma will absolutely do a somersault and a backflip going to the volcano's pit instead of asking Ryoga's help! Man, the old version is so goddamn weird.

I haven't seen what you mention, but in general: anime Ranma is generally just a fraud. He constantly has to be saved or helped in situations he would neveeerrr need any help. They often make him look like a common clown. There's a filler where he has a fight with a child and he LOSES (and this is somehow no big deal for him. Manga Ranma would never let this shit stand) whenever I watch anime original content (don't get me started on the movies)... i have yet to see anything that truly underscores that bro is built different. They even change manga content to make him look more useless like

it's even worse with girl Ranma because girl, which means male fantasies. Part of this is this thing where they give girl Ranma weirdly sexualized lines or behavior to sell her as "available" for a male audience, sometimes they use Ryoga to deliver them ("she says it to him" but it's actually for you) (there's this WEIRD scene in the soap arc where the anime has Ranma washing Ryoga's back while calling him a hunk the ladies die for, which is part of the fantasy for the audience... in the manga, Ranma simply knocks him out with a blow and runs. He would kill himself before saying or doing some of the shit they have him doing in that show) I don't eve going to take screenshots of the tweets where I show examples, I might start foaming myself. So let's focus on the next fantasy: the damsel.

Girls' gotta be fragile, so they do this in the pantyhose episodes: instead of Ranma protective Akane with his body and looking fierce, they do a "scared girl" closeup

they also omit Ranma making it clear he's angry cuz Akane almost got hurt btw, so you might think part of his anger was bro (feminine) just being afraid of the big bad boulder

however, because this is indeed a very strange show, in the shinnosuke ova they do the opposite (an ova where they remove practically all of Ranma's vulnerability and the depth of his feelings for Akane... they have bro SNORING when they reveal Akane is MISSING and no, I'm not making it up or exaggerating, but anyway...)

in moments where girl Ranma is meant to look vulnerable, they show her like an action hero

(why the fuck is Ranma saying this to Akane after saving her is beyond me. makes it seem like Ranma can't help but put her down, even when it's dead serious, which he also does in the movies)
