Hirogaru Sky! Precure Episode 27 Review: The World Inside The Mirror Pad

I wonder what the point of this episode was. It’s not bad, but rather, it feels like a one-time thing…unless the pigs are important to the story later on. It just feels like a filler so that the Precures can do something for the weekly episode basis.

The Precures are forced to go out of their comfort zone and find a way to solve their trials to escape. Ageha gets stuck in a library where she has to learn about airplane trivia, which was something that Tsubasa picked. Sora gets stuck in a makeup room where she has to make herself look beautiful, which was something Mashiro picked. Tsubasa has to find a way to dance excitedly and in rhythm, which was something Ageha picked. Mashiro has to get to the top of a huge flight of stairs, which was something Sora picked. While it is interesting to see our heroes struggle at first, I feel like the pairings are the typical SoraMashi and AgeTsuba mix-match. I think that it would’ve been better if they had been paired up with different combinations like Sora being forced to go into Tsubasa’s trial or Tsubasa being forced to go into Mashiro’s trial. I think that would’ve added some flare to the episode and to see different character combinations. 

I think my biggest issue is that what was the point of making them go through this? They didn’t have any conflict before they got thrown into the mirror pad and suddenly, they’re forced to channel their partner’s energy into succeeding. I think this would’ve made a bit more sense if there was a bit of conflict between the characters outside of the usual duos, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

However, the two biggest mysteries of this episode are the Mirror Pad world and Pinkton. Why is there a whole other world inside the Mirror Pad and it’s now being revealed 27 episodes in? Is this a part of Sky Land or a whole other world? Would this mean that the Mirror Pad is not a Sky Land tool but something otherworldly? Mashiro did point out that it feels a bit like the Underg Empire, but its not. What could this mean? It’s too bad that this never gets addressed in this episode. 

Pinkton is a riot, honestly. In all honesty, Pinkton is the conflict of this episode as she was the one who caused the trial mix-up and for the last-minute villain of the day to show up. Since her name ends with ton, it makes me wonder if there is a connection with Kabaton and Minoton. Since there are multiple Pinktons, there has to be a connection, right? The show wouldn’t add in a mysterious world that feels like the Underg Empire and have pig fairies residing in them just for a one-time filler episode, right? However, Pinkton isn’t as annoying as I expected her to be. She’s a lot less sadistic as she’s nice to the Precures and doesn’t got all sadist mode if they fail. I think that’s a bit of a nice touch since these types of characters are prone to be the mischief-making, violence-loving comedic relief.

While this was filler, this episode brought about more questions than answers. I’m worried about whether this show will address this Mirror Pad world and the pig fairies in a future episode. I just hope they’re not a one-time thing. Please. I don’t want to see another long-running show not address these types of one-time things. What are your thoughts about this episode and the possible theories that it brought?

Since we're still lacking Hermann and Newt's bios, I try to look at Guillermo del Toro's other work for ideas of what he might have had in mind for them - because if the man really likes an idea, he'll inevitably revisit it.

Today I took a quick gander into the Trollhunters novel (written by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus) and saw this little bit that I think Hermann Gottlieb enjoyers might like:

All I can say is that Europeans must be way ahead of us in math. That’s the only explanation for the way Claire tore apart equations. You could see the chalk crumbling to dust in her fist. When she was done—it never failed—she slammed a period on the end of the equation like she was finishing a sentence.

“Punctuation remains unnecessary,” Pinkton said. “But nice job, Claire.”

She exhaled like she’d just pinned an opponent. As she took up the eraser and wiped the board clean, Pinkton wrote a new line of gibberish and began surveying the class for the next casualty.

Just watched episode 27 of Hirogaru Sky! Pretty Cure, in which the Cures find themselves sucked into the Mirror Pad, and must clear a training course in order to get back out.

The episode begins with the Cures each doing their own thing to pass time while waiting for tonight's fireworks, when Tsubasa spots Ellee outside, having gotten a hold of the Mirror Pad. Tsubasa goes to take it back, telling her it's not a toy. As Ellee gets distracted by a cicada on a tree, Tsubasa notices the Mirror Pad light up from when Ellee played around with it. The Cures go to investigate, only to suddenly get pulled into the Mirror Pad.

Inside the Mirror Pad, they meet a strange pig-like creature who introduces herself as Pinkton. The Cures, noting the name ending in "ton" much like two of the Undergu Empire villains, wonder if it's a trap of some sort, but Pinkton assures them she has no relation to them and states she's here to help. She explains that in order for them to leave the Mirror Pad, they must each first choose a training course to complete. Once all four have completed theirs, they are free to leave.

Each of the Cures pick something relating to their interests, but as Pinkton prepares to send them in, she accidentally shuffles their cards. Ageha finds herself in a place full of books, where she is challenged to get ten questions right in a quiz about airplanes, the training course Tsubasa initially picked. Ageha initially thinks it shouldn't be too hard to get just ten questions right, but soon realizes that it'll be harder than she first thought. Tsubasa finds himself on the training course that Ageha picked, having to basically play a rhythm game. Tsubasa tries to dance to the beat, but finds himself overwhelmed.

Sora finds herself in the training course Mashiro chose, having to simply freshen up her look with make-up. Sora notes she doesn't know much about make-up, but tries anyways, struggling a bit to figure out how to apply it correctly. Meanwhile, Mashiro finds herself on the training course Sora chose, having to make it up a massive spiral staircase. A copy of Pinkton tells her that alternatively, she could try climbing a rope to the top of the tower, but figuring that would be even harder, Mashiro decides to start making her way up the stairs.

Meanwhile, Yoyo comes across Ellee and discovers what happened. She assures Ellee that the Cures will probably be back soon, and suggests they make some treats for them to enjoy when they return.

The Cures continue to struggle with the tasks, until the copies of Pinkton overseeing their training suggest they take a break. Ageha notes that Tsubasa would've been able to get every question right on his first try, and takes a moment to look at her surroundings, noticing some books about airplanes. Realizing Tsubasa would probably look things up if he didn't know the answer, Ageha decides to check out some of the books. Tsubasa tries to figure out his own puzzle, and decides to approach it the way Ageha would. Sora recalls something Mashiro once told her about make-up, and decides to try something a bit simpler. Ageha, Tsubasa and Sora manage to pass their tests by changing their approaches to the problem.

Taking a break, Mashiro wonders what Sora would say to her in this situation. She imagines Sora telling her to just keep going at her own pace, and finds the motivation to continue up the last few steps, where she sees the others waiting for her at the goal. With all four Cures having passed their training courses, they each note how they managed to pull it off because they approached it the way the others would approach it, and Pinkton points them to the exit. However, before they can go through it, Pinkton accidentally sends a card flying at the door when sneezing, turning the exit door into a monster. Pinkton apologizes for messing up again, and tells the Cures to just consider this one final challenge before they go back.

Feeling confident after clearing the training courses, the Cures transform and fight the door, each one using their finishing move against it, before Cure Sky and Cure Prism use Updraft Shining for the final blow, returning the door to normal. The Cures are returned to the real world, where they are greeted by Yoyo and Ellee. Ellee apologizes for accidentally putting them into that situation, but the Cures assure her it's fine, with Sora even inviting her to come along next time they try it.

The Cures finally get to watch the fireworks, while enjoying the fruit salad Yoyo and Ellee made for them.

Another fun episode! I wonder if Sora's line about inviting Ellee to come along next time is foreshadowing for another round of training in the Mirror Pad sometime in the future? Anyways, it was fun seeing each Cure having to change up their approach to their training courses and showing how much they've gotten to know their "partners" on the team.

I'll be looking forward to the next episode!

I don't know what is up with this season and colorful little pigs but I'll take as many as they'll launch at us, Pinkton is so precious!! Also I wonder if there might be some lore behind the fact both Skyland and the Underg Empire have some type of pig people, granted in Kabaton's case that tiny form was a disguise but still...
