Chii and Saeyoung’s Valentine’s Day

Long fingers tangled through braided orange cabling, creating and undoing a series of intricate knots. She’s just late, that’s all. Saeyoung leaned against a brick wall and gazed up at the gathering clouds, tugging at the cord for his headphones fitfully. He had thought he had planned everything out to the last detail, and she was late, or not coming at all, and it was probably going to rain.

His stomach grumbled at him, and he kicked a pebble across the street to relieve some of the frustration that was building inside of him, all of it aimed at himself. This is it. He had messed up Valentine’s Day.

“Saeyoung! I’m so sorry you had to wait so long! I wanted to text you but I couldn’t.” At the sound of her voice, his head snapped up, and there she was. Chii was walking towards him with her cute habit of managing to look almost entirely sophisticated, though her joy at seeing her date couldn't be completely contained. The worries that had weighed upon Saeyoung's heart fluttered away at her embrace.

“You’re worth any wait, my princess,” he said as he lifted her delicate frame by the waist, twirling her about. He always loved watching her long her fan out and glide through the air around her. Though, what he liked most was her smile. It felt like a secret and magical thing, shared only with him.

Once her feet were safely on the ground again, he brushed her hair to the side in one long, cascading wave, before brushing his lips against hers. “Saeyoung… You're too much,” she said with a grin.

“Well, you deserve everything so too much is almost enough!”

Saeyoung blinked as a droplet of water collided with his eyelashes, managing to sneak around his generous glasses. “What was that?” Chii asked as he flinched away from another drop. They both held out their hands to confirm… It was raining on Valentine’s Day. While Saeyoung frowned, Chii, with a flourish, produced a cute black umbrella from her bag. Though she held it as high as she could do so comfortably, her boyfriend had to hunch to get under it. He gave her a strained smile, and she looked up at him. “It’s just a gentle spring rain. Let’s see what the rest of the day looks like, hmm?”

Peering at Saeyoung’s phone as he tapped through a weather app, they discovered that this was just the beginning of a storm that would only grow throughout the evening. The redhead took a deep breath, summoning up his usual chipper tone again. “Nature has nothing on God Seven! I’ll make sure we still have the best date ever… at the bunker!”

Chii leaned into him, snuggling up close. Though she knew most of his sudden mood change was bluster, harkening back to the days before they met, she would nurture the seed of truth within it. “Yay! The rain can’t stop us, no matter what! God Seven is the best!”

Back in the bunker, Saeran was sprawled out on a well-worn couch. Shifting colors from the television danced over his hair. Only the very tips of his hair were still white - the rest a vibrant red just a shade lighter than his twin’s. His arm hung off the edge of the seat, loosely holding the remote. “Back already?”

“Yep! We have returned to our castle, safe from the dastardly deluge, determined to dash…”

Saeran cut him off. “So, it’s raining?”

“... yeah?”

“I haven’t seen rain in a long time. I’ll be back in a while.”

“Don’t stay out in it too long! It’s no good if you catch a cold since you’re still…”

With a huff of annoyance, Saeran interrupted his brother again. “I’m not a child. I’m just going out to the balcony for a bit. Relax, dork.”

Saeyoung pulled his girlfriend in close, absolutely beaming. “Did you hear that, Chii! He called me a dork instead of an idiot! Our brotherly love is unstoppable!”

“Don’t push your luck, idiot,” he said, the slight tilt of his lips giving away his true feelings. “Whatever you’re doing, have fun and remember you aren’t the only ones who live here, dammit.”

Chii entered the depths of their massive walk-in closet, eyeing a long row of dresses in a rainbow of colors. She snickered to herself at the collection before heading over to her rack - a vast sea of mostly black, dark red, and regal patterns. Saeyoung said he had needed some time to prepare a surprise for her, so she decided to surprise him as well by dressing up for the occasion. The original plan had been to head home and get dressed and ready to go out, anyway.

A few minutes later she stood before a full-length mirror, straightening out the cascading layers of black ruffles that made up her skirt. Since Saeyoung's date idea was a picnic dinner and enjoying watching the sunset fade into night, she skipped the gloves she usually wore with the dress and put on a necklace with little silver stars.

With no way to know how long Saeyoung would be, Chii wandered out to the living room, ready to sit down with her phone. Saeran was back, sitting on the couch with his feet tucked under him, though she now noticed he was reading a slender book. The television was usually on for background noise as he wasn’t yet comfortable with only the hum of the electronics in the bunker for company.

Though she had been living with the twins for a few months, she didn’t often speak with Saeran. In a way, she appreciated that about him. She always had time for Saeyoung’s boisterous nature, yet sitting quietly with his twin, reading or studying was its own comfort. After settling into her favorite chair - a dramatic affair of plush dark red velvet and polished wood - she quietly asked, “what are you reading?”

Despite her care, he still jumped slightly at the sound of her voice, and he closed the book, keeping his eyes on the cover as he spoke. “Desiderata. My therapist gave it to me. It’s a poem.”

Chii smiled. “You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. That one, right?”

Saeran glanced up from the book and nodded at her. “Exactly. I’m not sure if I understand all of it, but that part is… nice.”

A flurry of movement and a familiar black and yellow hoodie caught her eye just before Saeyoung announced, “Madame, your carriage awaits!”

Both Chii and Saeran looked about in confusion, trying to catch his meaning, though Saeyoung was beckoning her to his side, his arm held out like a proper gentleman. He was up to something. She would gladly fall for it though, as she fell in love again with the handsome man she was cautiously walking towards.

A mere few steps away from him, she barely caught the glimmer in his eye before he lunged forward. Next thing she knew, he was holding her like a bride, her arms around his neck, both of them laughing as he carried her to their room. She waved over Saeyoung’s shoulder to his brother. Though he shook his head at their antics, he waved his little family away with a smile.

Chii smoothed out her skirt again once Saeyoung set her down before the closed door. His eyes roved over her form, taking in her whole outfit with open appreciation, before settling on the shining stars that bedecked her throat. “I… didn’t expect you get dressed up since we were staying home. You look beautiful,” he said with breathless adoration, his cheeks tinted a faint pink.

“This is nothing, but thank you, hun. I knew you put your whole heart into planning today, so I wanted to be a little fancy.” Her green eyes peered up at him over her glasses, and she couldn’t help but grin at the effect it had on him.

“Y-yes! Planning! Okay~! Are you ready for a picnic under the stars? I told you a little rain couldn’t hold back God Seven!”

She clapped at his performance and nodded, eager to see what he had in store for them. Saeyoung opened the door with a flourish, ushering her into their newly transformed bedroom.

The room was filled with a warm glow from strings of tiny lights that followed the folds of the gauzy white fabric forming a canopy over their bed. She held a hand to her chest as she slowly took a step forward, enchanted by the sight. Once she was in the room, she heard sounds of nature - soft wind carried the melody of distant birdsong, while crickets played their own tune to welcome the coming night.

“What…?”

Saeyoung’s arms wrapped around her waist and she settled into his familiar warmth, only now noticing the picnic basket on their bed. “I hope this makes up for being rained out of our picnic. I can’t believe I didn’t think to look at the weather reports first…”

“Sae, this is magical. I’ve only seen things like this on Pinventory online! I think we should try indoor camping more often.”

At her words, he hugged Chii tightly enough to nearly make her squeak. After a moment, he let her go so that he could lead her by the hand to the bed, where they both settled into the mound of pillows he had gathered. The effect was even prettier from beneath the canopy, the individual bulbs softening into an early twilight glow.

The couple sat together, quietly snickering at each other’s jokes and snuggling ever closer as they enjoyed their little feast. As they neared the end of it, they took turns feeding each other cubes of cheese or bites of fruit. Saeyoung’s face did it’s best to match the color of the last strawberry as she held it up to his waiting lips, green eyes meeting warm amber. Never one to be easily bested, he kept her gaze, licking his lips before taking the sweet fruit into his mouth with deliberate slowness.

When she leaned in to kiss him, he held up a finger to hold her off for the moment and shuffled around a bit so he could get his phone out of his pocket. “I promised a night under the stars, didn’t I?”

With a few taps on his screen, the atmosphere changed. The glow around the canopy dimmed to nothing, replaced by a scant scattering of even smaller lights inside of it, reminiscent of stars. Above everything, his intricate constellations of glow-in-the-dark stars showed themselves as well, shedding their pale green light. Even the sounds altered - birdsong giving away to a quiet, romantic melody that mingled subtly with a whisper of wind and other sounds of the night.

He left Chii’s side momentarily so he could clean up the rest of their meal, and she could take in the sights. “How did you do this all so quickly, Sae? It’s amazing!”

“Uh-uh! A magician never tells his secrets!”

“Oh, you’re a magician now?” she giggled as he laid down next to her.

“Certainly,” he replied with a smirk as he rolled her over on top of him. “And for my first trick, I intend to make that gorgeous dress disappear…”
