BOTD: Trinidad Piping Guan
Tumblr media
Photo: William Stephens
"Large, turkey-like bird found only in the forests of northern Trinidad. It is black with white patches on the wings and crown, a light blue face, and an azure dewlap (flap of bare skin) that dangles from its throat. It is usually seen high in the trees, but on rare occasions can descend to the ground. Locally known as 'pawi', this impressive bird is highly endangered due to hunting, and is regularly seen in only a few places, such as near the town of Grand Riviere."

Blue-throated piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis), family Cracidae
While the bare skin around the eye ranges from white to cobalt blue in color, the skin of the dewlap on their throat varies far more in color. Aside from the same white to cobalt blue range, it can also be grayish purple, dark purplish gray, or black.

I have two indigenous dolls I want to have, one is on the way in the mail, the other is going to be my next big project 👁️👁️✨
the one in the mail will be inspired by my dad's side of the family, Kuskatan Nahua. idk I saw her on the website and she looked native to me lolol the other doll I am making from scratch is going to be from my mom's side of the family, Chorotega.
it's hard because there is not much accessible information about either tribe anymore, and the Chorotega Mangue language is extinct. I believe less or more than 200 people speak Kuskatan Nawat. 😟
so, I don't have many resources to find names for my dolls, but I tried my best! I used these sources for the name of my Kuskatan Nahua doll:
and this source for my Chorotega doll:
it's really hard finding accurate or vast meanings of the languages my ancestors spoke because they are either extinct or endangered :(
but I hope that my attempts at creating their names are seen as an effort to honour my ancestors and to attempt to preserve their language that was stolen from them, I'm not trying to offend anyone or mock these languages.
I truly wish I was fluent in them and that I was more in touch with my heritage, but luckily these few resources, though they are limited, I treasure them very much!

Made an OC based off of El cipitio. His story isn't exactly like his though. Metztli is his name because it means moon in Nahuatl, and his nickname is El Cipitio. he's albino and based off the song hijo de la luna in a way. He's aroace, and if I were to make a game about him it'd be like cuphead. ALSO OOO he's mestizo (mixed with indigenous, specifically pipil :3)

Quetzalcoatl 🐉 Talon Abraxas
Quetzalcoatl (“feathered serpent” or “plumed serpent”) is the Nahuatl name for the Feathered-Serpent deity of ancient Mesoamerican culture. In Mesoamerican myth Quetzalcoatl is also a mythical culture hero from whom almost all mesoamerican peoples claim descent. These myths often describe him as the a divine ruler of the mythical Toltecs of Tollan who after his expulsion from Tollan, travelled south or east to set up new cities and kingdoms. Many different Mesoamerican cultures, e.g. Maya, K'iche, Pipil, Zapotec claim to have been the only true lineage of Quetzalcoatl and thus of the mythical Toltecs.
