Trying to do worldbuilding for a planet is very hard when you don't know anything about astronomy, physics, hard science in general, and haven't taken a math class in several years
I wanted the planet to be small but otherwise Earth-like but apparently a planet that small would not be dense enough to hold an atmosphere together unless it was real close to its sun and if I wanted it to be real close to its sun while still being habitable it'd have to be a red dwarf star and actually a planet that orbited a red dwarf star that close would probably be tidally locked and the colors would be all weird and wait, how old is the planet, what about the moon, fuck we gotta figure out the tectonic plates, how the fuck do THOSE work--
.
.
..if this were a spec bio or sci-fi setting these would be interesting topics im sure. But I'm trying to put together a HIGH FANTASY SETTING. These guys wouldn't even appreciate the work I'm doing here!! In their setting the sun is a deity who handles LEGAL MATTERS they don't CARE ABOUT THISSSS

Writer ask meme: 4, 7, 17!
replies to this post.
4: What are some of your favorite tropes?
Answered here.
7: What was the first novel you ever tried to write? If you’ve never tried to write a novel, then what was the first story you ever wrote?
Oh wow. I think one of the earliest things was some kind of fantasy thing that involved tolkienesque wraiths and time travel. I remember a sci-fi thing with complicated biology and planetbuilding, heavily influenced by a book whose title I can’t even guess at now. There was a post-apocalyptic world where a certain group of people developed into what I can best describe as mechanically-assisted bats, living in the remains of tall buildings and/or mesas/cliff dwellings. There was a space colony world that played out as fantasy (a la The Dragonriders of Pern) with some strange customs and biology based on stuff the early colonists did and later generations forgot why; assassins were central for some reason.
17: How far along are you in your current WIP? How long have you been working on it?
I have a first draft of Skyfallen; I’ve been working on that for just over a year now. My drafts are usually pretty clean but this one isn’t so there are a lot of scenes I need to fill in and finish. It’s slightly under 150,000 words, not including character and setting notes. In the interim I finished two character backgrounds for TTRPG games and one for a new WoW character (curse you, WotLK classic).

What is this blog?
This is a blog dedicated to documenting my fictional planet with the placeholder name Alpha. Why did I decide to create a fictional planet? Because I wanted to I guess. I was reading The Left Hand of Darkness and was inspired by Ursula Le Guin’s worldbuilding (please read Ursula Le Guin, she’s so good even if you don’t care about worldbuilding). I’m not planning on using this planet for anything, maybe someday I’ll write a sci-fi story set on Alpha but that’s not the reason I’m making this. The reason is simply because I like worldbuilding. I’m starting with the basic construction of the planet ─ its atmosphere, its gravity, all that jazz ─ and then if I continue going with this I will add a map and individual countries and languages. Knowing me I will probably quit before I finish, but hey. I’m basing a lot of this on Artifexian’s videos on worldbuilding. Expect things to change as I continue. I’m not documenting everything, just the things I find personally interesting about my planet. I have a spreadsheet about it, I might share it later. Ideally I’ll make one post a day. Will I do that? Probably not!

I had to build a planet. Yes. A planet. For Em and Mac to meet in the Mass Effect AU. Do I also need to build a whole system? Probably not. Will it be mentioned? Probably. Do I need to sell it to my readers as to why ships would travel using FTL to get there? You betcha.
But I made a name. And I have a location.
Ania. In the Gemini Sigma Cluster. It's in its own system, and while I haven't narrowed down quite yet as to why they primarily went there, I can tell you that it's a garden world, with beautiful views if one strays away from the main colony (which, I can say, that Em does leave the immediate area to explore. She has the survival skills and biotics to take on anything coming her way and can handle the walk).
The cliffs are steep, but covered in green. Waterfalls flow down to add to the wonderful view. The climate is a little humid the further away you get from the colony, but it is a pleasant warmth from the two suns in the summer months.
The Alliance has a permanent presence there due to the many traders coming and going from the colony. There is a smaller, minor settlement on the planet as the residents are starting to branch out and explore the area, finding and marking the rare and precious metals for mining and minor processing. The crops grown adapt well, and the local fauna have been okay-ed by scientists for consumption. Counts are done throughout the year to keep the fauna population viable, to prevent overhunting.
I put a lot of detail into this planet that isn't really going to be the "star" of the story. (Hahaha) but I thought I'd try my hand at some worldbuilding. What do you think? :)

My brain isn't functioning right now (maybe my music is too loud), but if you're having trouble with creativity, try starting something new, like something big, just jump in head first. Then your brain will be excited by Fun New Thing and it will maybe give you ideas! Thats what works for us at least ☺️
hmmm thats a good idea
i mean in fact i have what
two big projects right now? im worldbuilding a species currently for a campaign and stuff
theres also the eternal existence of "i need to finish planetbuilding iqrix" but thats an old project thats on the back burner rn
idk what big things i could make hmm
i dont want to go too big cuz like ... i get burned out easily
idk
but thanks

I'm writing a story about wizards who terraform planets via magic. How might a moon/moons affect their work, especially if they are moving continental plates around and creating oceans? Would there be any reason they would want to redesign the moon's orbit? If they did that, how would the planet be affected while they moved the moon?
The planetary engineers of Magrathea had to figure out that when they built the Earth. They got pretty good at it, so I guess planetary engineering isn’t that difficult to do it.
Tumblr media
The effect of a moon on its planet depends on three things: the distance the moon orbits, the size of the moon, and the ratio of the moon’s mass to its planet’s mass.
The closer the moon orbits its planet, the more effect it will have.
The more massive the moon is, the more effect it will have.
The larger the moon’s mass is in comparison to it’s planet, the more effect it will have.
A moon will affect its planet mostly through gravity. The larger and closer the moon is, the greater its gravitational effects will be. Earth’s Moon is pretty big - both in actual terms and in comparison to Earth (the Moon masses 1.2% of the mass of the Earth). The moon orbits 385,000 km from Earth.
Tumblr media
In comparison, Mars’ largest moon, Phobos, is only 22 km in diameter and masses less than 0.0000016% the mass of Mars. Even though Phobos orbits 9376 km from Mars, it’s so little that you can say it’s gravitational effect on Mars is zero and not be very wrong.
Tumblr media
A moon will affect its planet by pulling on the side closest to it. On Earth, this causes ocean tides, but also flexes the crust and affects earthquakes and volcanoes. If your moon is smaller or farther away, it will raise much lower - or effectively no - tides.
I wrote about what might happen if the Moon was instantly removed from Earth then returned to it. If your people are moving continents, they’d be aware of these possible problems, and should be able to handle them with just a little bit of planning.
However, if you have the ability to move continents around, chances are you have enough power that you can handle any complications moving your moon might cause. If they get in the way, pop them into a higher orbit for a while, then return them to where they were.
Or, maybe they want to improve the planet by moving the moons because they want a brighter or dimmer night, or maybe they’ll move the moon so close that it’ll break up and form rings around the planet.
Cause rings are awesome, and will always look pretty.

So, I am building a universe that does still contain Earth, but contains many other worlds, all with different climates and fundamental features. My question is on the plausibility of it, namely, worlds that are predominantly icy or cold climates that still have life. What would the light situation be like? How long would each day be? Is it plausible to have worlds that an Earth day and another worlds day might be longer or shorter?
Anonymous said to script-a-world:January 29th 2017, 2:46:00 pm · 2 days agoSo I have a world with two moons and I'd like sailing to be a major way of travelling, but I'm not sure if this is reasonable- two moons would obviously have an effect on the tides, would that impact sailing too much? Or could I set it up somehow so that it still allows for sailing, even if it's more complicated or dangerous? (Size, density, proximity and orbit of the moons can all be adjusted at whim.)
I’m lumping these questions into one post because we aren’t really the blog to answer either of them! We’ve gotten a handful of questions recently that would be best answered by @scriptastronomer, and we just want to remind you guys that, much as we like building worlds, we aren’t really the blog to go to with sciency questions about space. I would suggest that both of you submit your questions to them instead, as we don’t really have much to offer in the way of answers on these two. Happy planetbuilding!

but theres the new season coming out... you wont post any from it?
True! I completely forgot about that. Hopefully the backgrounds will be both pretty and visible.
To my other replies: I have capped the movies before, and I still have a few more movie caps in my drafts but not a lot. When I started this tumblr I did not have the intention of capping PGSM or the manga because in terms of scenery I love the anime aesthetic the most but I will definitely revisit those and see what I come up with!

about the e&p movie, internet says it was dreamworks who bought the film rights so it could be sent to them!
Huh, good idea. Maybe it'll get them to reconsider.
