June is the “Plastic Challenge Month” = 1 month to just ignore plastic! Challenge yourself and your friends, colleagues, family to say no to every bag you’re offered; every plastic-bottled drink - make your own in the morning and take one out with you for the day (saving money & stopping waste) and avoid food items in plastic boxes.  If you have to eat fruit (which we know is essential & delicious!) and you can’t visit your local greengrocer why not take the fruit out of the packet at the till and tell the supermarket you don’t want or need it!! :-)

“By 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish and 1 bin lorry’s worth of plastic is dumped into the sea every minute” Dame Ellen MacArthur (Guardian January 2016).  Unless people stand up and say no to plastic, the situation will continue to get worse.  Only 5% of plastics are recycled effectively, whilst 40% end up in landfill and about 35% ends up in fragile ecosystems such as the seas.  A carelessly dumped plastic bag can strangle wildlife, or creatures such as seals may eat it; plastics can break down in the sea releasing toxic chemicals that may be digested by fish and eventually end up on your plate and inside you!  So all in all, is that plastic cup, that bag, that pot really worth it? Try the challenge this month and see how you can live without plastic and how you can help protect our seas and marine wildlife.

Picked up some fresh produce at Commercial Road market in Portsmouth today. Took my own bags, so no plastic was used. Tastes better than what's in the big supermarkets and also costs less. I got loads of fruit and veg for under £6. Look at these delicious carrots and spinach. Do you know what Fast Fashion is? You might want to investigate. Fast Fashion is how the majority of the clothing and fashion industries choose to do business. It's become public knowledge that many products are built to have a short life span, forcing consumers to by more. After the Industrial Revolution the Clothing Industry was created. Textiles (Fabrics) could be made much faster and in larger quantities. Tailors/seamstresses began to be able to make clothing that was less expensive for the lower classes. Eventually Fashion Designers became celebrities. At first there was two times a year new clothing styles were rotated, spring and fall. Now there a four or or more times a year retailers will change out their stock. People throw out their old clothes, or donate them, to buy the newest fashions. Along with this, fabrics are now made with plastics. TLDR: More clothes are saturating the market, designed to wear out as quickly as possible, containing non-compostable plastics, with environmentally devastating practices. So far so good

I've been living without plastic for nearly a week now and it has been ok. I have really enjoyed it. Saturday was a challenge as I woke to discover Thames Water had cut my water off while they mended a burst water main cue frantic dash trying to find water in glass bottles but found the last two in the back of Sainsburys. Hurrah. I loved doing my shopping locally on Saturday and was really pleased that although I spent more at farmers market and butchers market, I spent substantially less at Sainsburys and think I was within my usual food budget. (One of the things I'm interested in is whether I spend more or less overall during this challenge.) The farmers market was super fun this week as I had good chat with the people from Wild Co who sell the most amazing salad leaves and was recognised at the cheese stall as the "girl giving up plastic". However my trip II to Whole Foods has changed that slightly. I found a range of goodies in Whole Foods in High Street Ken - paper-wrapped chocolate, museli, coffee, almond butter, bulk goods that you can dispense in paper bags (nuts, mango, seaweed crackers) to help with snacks at work. While there are some things that are brilliant in Whole Foods - it is also a place full of plastic and it really hit me on Saturday. Also I found lots of packaging that I couldn't work out if it was paper or plastic - like the Clearspring ranges. I'm assuming it is all plastic but at some point will check. Having come down with a horribly sore throat I also found some throat sweets in glass jar there (we just do not speak of the price). Since Saturday I have been sick so drinking honey and lemon and padding about at home so it hasn't been hard to remain plastic free. I need to find a better way to keep bread fresh though. My hot cross buns from the farmers market went super dry. I have been surprised by all the lovely messages I have been getting about the challenge from friends and family at home and abroad. It is very cheering indeed. Going into the second week and still feeling positive about the challenge.
