Reposting this from my twitter thread because it hasn't left my head (and adding a tiny bit more).

Seen so many questionable takes lately about the ivantill kiss, and I know everyone is allowed to have different opinions and interpretations but.

No, Ivan didn’t just pretend to kiss Till for the show. And no, he wasn't trying to make Till hate him either or trying to trigger him over his implied SA to snap him into action.

I think the whole point of the scene (confirmed by the creators) is Ivan finally breaking his mask of perfection and control and giving in to his messy, all consuming feelings, being selfish for once.

Yes, by the end before the strangling starts, he appears more clear headed and now focused on the objective of manipulating the score. But he doesn't really look at it until AFTER he starts strangling Till.

The kiss itself wasn't part of the strategy, or at least not entirely something calculated. Ivan could have skipped the kiss and strangled Till right away and gotten the same result.

The fact that he kissed him AGAIN after he started strangling him, more softly and 'personal', almost like a goodbye or an apology (whether for his selfishness or for their past), tells me he wanted it.

I think a last selfish act doesn't diminish the love he had for Till, it just shows the tragedy of ALNST. Ivan is only human after all. And no matter what kind of mask he built for himself and what illusion of control he had over his life, when faced with the real, imminent possibility of losing Till, he crumbled and did something unexpected.

I have more to say about the Ivan and Sua parallels and how he finally understands her in the Confession comic etc etc but I think I've yapped enough.

I just don't like it when people try to mold the narrative because they're uncomfortable with an unconsensual kiss. It's meant to be painful and heartwrenching, a reflection on Ivan's one sided-feelings and his desperation at the moment —to be seen for the first (and last) time, to not be left behind, to convey his emotions in the only way he could when being seconds away from death.

After all the team confirmed that Ivan is clumsy with emotions and only knows to convey them in 'childish' ways (the nuzzling against his face, the picking fights with Till and teasing him).

I think some people like to think of the kiss as something purely calculated and selfless because it makes it more 'palatable', but in my opinion this take washes out Ivan's character and the flaws that make him just as human, vulnerable and complex as the rest of the cast. He was willing to throw away his life and his perfect image because he wanted something that badly.

a BUNCH of Garu/Karu meta, part 2: eyes, Karu-fronting units, In Defense of Sexy Garu/Karu, Leroy & Garu conspiracy, Update to Rei/Gramps theory, general "character development"

So over here I wrote a bunch of Garu/Karu meta zizz-asdf-re-r-o-u.tumblr.com/post/737197419853398016/ and I knew that eventually I'd wanna write more, so here's part 2!

Once again, disclaimer that I have not played every event nor watched every intimacy rooms so I am definitely missing some lore. If anyone has additional info to my questions, lemme know! Also, spoilers everywhere!

A) Blue eyes or yellow eyes?

In a couple comments of phaerlax's fics, he suggested that Karu's eyes are actually blue and I thought I'd follow up with some ~canon~ evidence.

Ch7- every mention of their switching involves language, attitude, and mannerisms, nothing about eye color.

Ch13- Kolt is about to kidnap Garu when Karu takes over. It's very fast and happens all in 1 sentence so there isn't space to mention any eye colors, but Kolt doesn't realize they've switched until Karu has kicked him in the face

Master's Gift- when Karu is pretending to be Garu, Eiden realizes it with the language and voice again, not eyes.

Howling Cyclone- when Garu suddenly takes over with no one around, the text narration only says "the wolf yokai closes and opens his eyes before dashing..." No mention of eye color and this time its from the third person text narration, rather than Eiden or any other character's POV.

Misty Vale- when the young wolves encounter Karu, they don't realize that Garu has switched until Karu announces to call him that. At the very end of the MV event when Garu declines joining the wolves, Eiden pats his head only to realize that its Karu due to his reaction.

Binary Starlight- no mention of eye color, but the modeling people, store owners, and Karu's fans, only refer to him as Karu or Mr Wolf Yokai, including when it's Garu taking Karu's place during the competition announcements.

Some people might have noticed this by now, but Garu's ally units all have blue eyes in their sprites. But when you're actually battling, OG SSR/SR/R/N are all Karu voice lines. HC & EG Garu seem to have more Garu battle voice lines than Karu voice lines. I don't have all of them, so if anyone is willing to help me look into EB and FF Garu, please do! In a cool meta way, the fact that the sprites have blue eyes yet its Karu's voice coming out, indicates to me that Karu's eyes are probably blue.

And lastly- have you noticed Garu's battle loading screen pose, OG loading homepage, Bliss promotional pic with everyone's OG poses + new Dante/Blade/Rei, and Garu's sprite in the opening animated sequence? He's manspreading and has an angry face. Yes, we've seen Garu angry a number of times, but in the new loading homepage with Rei and Dante, Garu is smiling and Garu's angry face is usually still quite cute. I think the OG version is Karu and he has blue eyes there.

B) Karu Fronting Units

Ok so slightly following up from that last bit. I had a idea once, where it would've been cool for Karu to front in the offensive/defensive units, such as strikers and guardians, and Garu to front in the supportive units, such as buffers and healers. Especially since the battle voice lines already do that (see point above). This would be extra cool cause it lines up with their lore/personalities and DID system. Karu is the protector alter, doing a lot of the Dead Zone surviving, and it'd make sense for him to do offensive/defensive battle units.

But also- Binary Starlight Garu should have totally been Karu fronting. Frozen Echoes, while Garu is onscreen more often, is about Karu wanting to sing and then getting kidnapped. But more importantly, the intimacy stories are about Karu's modeling competition. He's also a striker and, as mentioned, I thought it would be cool to have Karu being the strikers.

Endless Banquet Garu probably would have been nice to be a Karu unit because part of it is about Karu wanting to go to the yokai festival, but it was also Garu's 1st event SSR, so it makes sense that he wouldn't be.

So here's to me sending out into the universe that we get a future Karu main event SSR. He's still missing a saboteur and I can see a saboteur going either Garu or Karu.

C) In Defense of Sexy Garu/Karu

People's biggest problem with Garu is usually how young he looks and acts. You are not wrong if you are uncomfortable with Garu/Karu being sexualized! That is totally valid! This section is not for you. This section is for ignorant haters. (Garu/Karu are just fictional characters so I don't think too defensively on this so I won't be offended if you still do.)

First up- Garu/Karu is not a shota. Shotacon is defined as underage/prepubescent/pubescent boys in an erotic/sexualized manner. And yes there are muscle shotas. But Garu is not one of them. Depending on the lore, Garu is 19-33+ (possibly older, see that other post where I calculated his possible age) and he has a young adult proportioned body. However, he has a major babyface and acts puppylike/borderline childlike and does appear younger than the rest of the cast. So it's possible that he's shota-adjacent and I can see why people think he'd be the "1000 year old loli/shota" characters.

Next- puppy play! Have you heard of animal roleplay and specifically leather puppies? Have you met someone whose done puppyplay? Seems an awful lot like Garu right? You'd be right! I'm more of a handler, but a lot (though not all) of the (western) puppy players I know go into a (dumbed down) puppy headspace, act hyper, head scratches, play fetch, bark, treats, and "treats". (Naturally, IA studio is writing from the Asian perspective so the scene might be different there & they probably didn't consult any puppy players anyways, but there's no set "rules".) Sound familiar?

I'm like 99% sure Garu/Karu is supposed to represent puppy play, not shotas. There's a reason the most common imagery of a leather puppy is a pup hood, some kind of gag, collar, chest harness, jockstrap, butt plug tail, and leather boots. Also sound familiar? It's very close to OG SSR and SR Garu, and when the devs gave BS Garu a jockstrap, that sealed the deal. Same with when they made Garu/Karu an omega in the A/B/O event.

Now that we agreed that Garu/Karu is puppy play and not shotacon, one common factor amongst puppyplayers is the sexycute factor. As in, the puppy could be acting cute and affectionate and puppylike while getting fucked. Head scratches while doing a blowjob. And so on. NU Carnival characters fill a variety of sexy roles and while we have 2 other yokai, Garu is the one that fills the puppy play role. He's not a furry, but he's the closest thing for those who are into it. And of course, he (and Kuya) are the token kemonomimi. I'd argue that Garu is actually more human that most puppies I've seen/played with since he is primarily bipedal and talks fully in a human language.

So yeah its fine to sexualize them because of the sexy archetype they fulfill!

D) Leroy and Garu Conspiracy

So this is a wild and possibly impossible conspiracy theory. At the end of Gambler's Paradise, we get a scene between Aster and Rei talking about a mysterious "that group". In ch 13, Rei tells us that Council of Sorcery is trying to replace the need for Huey's essence. Throughout Gambler's Paradise, we find out that Leroy is a recent imperfect familiar that was a result of experiments with Huey's essence. Throughout Misty Vale and Ch 13, we get hints that Garu might have been experimented on by the Council long ago.

So my conspiracy theory is that both Leroy and Garu were experimented on by the same Council of Sorcery, even if they were from different departments. Garu was possibly more than a decade or several decades ago and Leroy was within the past couple months or year cause he didn't start causing chaos in Aster's casinos until recently. This means that either there are different departments focusing on different experiments, but also totally possible that back then, they were experimenting on removing Huey's essence and now they're working on replicating Huey's essence.

Bonus weird similarity between Garu, Leroy, and Morvay- they all really REALLY like eating their choice of preferred food, and get hungry very easily. (Ok Garu technically might be super hungry cause he had very little food for many many years, but still)

HMMMMMM LORE MIC DROP.

E) Update to Rei is Gramps/Garu/Karu backstory

Here I theorized that Rei might be Gramps and other people have theorized or drawn fanart of this too. HOWEVER, Howling Cyclone does have a major problem in that we see Gramp's ghost.

What i propose to fix this: we don't know when ch13 or Eerie Escapade happened and realistically it's probably because Rei wasn't created as a character yet. But I can explain this lore away with saying even if Rei died "long ago", we dont know when he was reborn. And hey, maybe for all we know, the Gramps ghost was actually Father, realizing that even if Garu has Eiden, Karu could use some more support and decided to go revive Rei. :shrug: Or maybe they'll retcon the Howling Cyclone ghost like they retconned Aster's dick.

F) Garu/Karu's ~Character Development~ (not H scene specific)

(Warning for rambling!) So in my post about whether or not Kuya has character development and if it's even necessary, I mentioned that Garu & Karu needed character development. In various replies (but not my post), one comparison I've brought up between Kuya and Garu/Karu(+Zuko) is the difference between slow gradual changes and the heroes journey. And I thought I'd elaborate on that some more.

To clarify on Kuya- he's over 200 years old and has been changing slowly over time since forever. He started the story already having changed over time and will probably not stop going through this kind of slow gradual change, simply due to the fact that time passes and he's immortal. And while Eiden plays a part in present day, overall Kuya is not having major story beats causing massive changes.

The cool thing about Nu Carnival's cast, as evidenced by Kuya, is that everyone is on different points of their ~character development~ and Garu/Karu is starting from their very beginning. Yakumo is also starting from the very beginning. Whereas someone like Dante, Olivine, and Edmond are already somewhere further down the adventure. Or they have a different kind of character development path like Kuya, Rei, and Blade.

Now for Garu/Karu. So the classic heroes journey is a story template where the protagonist gets a call to adventure, meets various character archetypes, endures many trials, and returns changed in some way. Obviously it's not a 1:1 matchup with Garu/Karu's story, but he does get a call to adventure (joining the clan), meets a mentor(the clan members), and is currently still enduring many trials. This is what I mean by he has a big "heroes journey development". And using this pattern, we can predict that Garu/Karu will continue enduring more tests, before encountering a major ordeal, conquering it, returning back a changed man.

Now why is Garu, or more specifically, Karu's character development important or necessary? Much like how Yakumo started out his heroes journey as a "newbie", Garu and especially Karu start out as "newbies", with limited empowerment, not that many skills yet, MANY basic things to learn (and amnesia, or at least Garu has amnesia. Karu is debatable). Karu has big dreams, really big dreams, and while they're played for laughs, he absolutely sucks at those big dreams. He's either going to achieve those big dreams, change those big dreams, or lose his delusions of grandeur and that will be character development. His current stage in life, lack of power (and stamina lol), trauma, and unfortunate circumstances are preventing him from achieving those big dreams. Garu is more chill and mostly just wants to have Fun with his Master and help people where he can (including helping Karu). However, he also lacks power, is a newbie to things, and got that traumaTM that just causes him problems. Garu also kind of represents the coming of age plot- they may have gained basic survival skills in the Dead Zone & had no social skills, but have also started dabbling in learning and leadership in Forgotten Fruit, Eerie Escapade, and Misty Vale. He's slowly becoming braver. They also didn't know how to read before meeting Yakumo & Olivine, but now they can sort of write sentences!

As for their role in the story & how it ties in with character development. He's the cutesy comic relief like Blade or Topper, but also, as mentioned in my Kuya post, that they're a victim of the Gemstone plotTM. SPOILER TERRITORY. One major conflict that the plot is coming against in the main storyline is altars going haywire and the Council of Sorcery and Garu (and possibly Leroy) might be the key to solving this mystery. However, with his amnesia and limited empowerment, they can't really progress with it. Therefore, it is crucial for Garu/Karu to experience ~character development~ to move forward.

i mentioned this in the tags of a post before, but ciaran is definitely the kind of person who acts dumber/more ignorant than he really is. i mean he is?? young and kinda dumb sometimes asdf but he notices and understands more than he lets on when it comes to dynamics between people, how people portray themselves vs. how they really are, etc. he's just learned to pretend that he doesn't from his time at social events held at the manor. it's typically better that people don't know that you know... what you know asdfg

he tries to play the dumb card on kaiya and cyrillo sometimes and it never works :' ) they know good and well that he knows that the duchess is having an affair with the lord of some obscure land and that he just nearly exposed her to make her squirm for saying something catty to kaiya. he's in trouble ( but not that much bc cyrillo approves actually )!!

As much as he pretends to hate his dad, you know he LOVESSS his sisters and lets them do whatever they want to him just cuz they're so sweet to him. He's such a good baby too, not even fussing or anything when a clip or pony gets a stuck or something is tied a bit too tight. honestly, he's probably the reason they even know how to do hair in the first place hehehe...

and oh god, him asking for a braid... i'm on the FLOOOOOOR. even if he didnt though, you'd still have to give him something to make sure it didnt get tangled. its probably kinda funny since its the one thing he doesnt try to argue w/ getou about lmfaooooo.

anyway, he grows up and continues to be doted on for his hair. literally in high school and still comes home every day with his braid or bun switched to something else just cuz girls love playing with him. such a player </3

okay some thoughts on chiyo's fighting style specifically in her n.aruto verse!! forgive me if these aren't super detailed yet asdfg

as far as strengths go, chiyo most likely relies on her speed and intelligence the most. physically she's small and not very strong ( partially bc of her size and partially bc she hates building muscle just a little more than stamina training ), so she naturally focused on being faster than her opponent and ways to take them by surprise

that being said, chiyo will absolutely lead her opponent to believe they've got her all figured out, cornered. she's good at playing pretend and uses that to her advantage as often as possible. the more someone underestimates her, the better.

i said before that she prefers to act as the support, basically coming in to disrupt the fight and throw people off. she does this when caught in a fight alone, too, using tools or jutsu to create space between her and her opponent to give herself a moment to think and breathe. she also might just cause an explosion if possible bc that's one hell of a distraction asdf it just depends what's on her person/what she's capable of at that point in time

chiyo is also a big believer in preparation when applicable. she will 100% pick a spot, set up a million traps, and then lead her opponent to said spot with a million traps. this isn't always possible ofc, but if she has even a small window to set something up to use to her advantage, chiyo's gonna take it.

i forgot for a second i wanted her to specialize in genjutsu asdfg but that'll have to wait for elaboration bc i'm still getting reacquainted with n.aruto. i do imagine it's something she's worked to get as close to perfect as possible, though.

ooh an important thing is that chiyo keeps a pretty level head most of the time! there's gonna be exceptions ofc, but even when she's internally freaking out, she's playing pretend once again and acting cool as a cucumber for her teammates.

here we go, the annual planica recap and with it the planica spam is making its return, and in my humble opinion, it may as well be the best one yet (or maybe my brain just forgot what it has been missing out on the past 3 years). so, while you have been freaking out about sevi dropping a bomb about retirement, i have been blissfully oblivious to what's been going on on tumblr because of the following:

it felt so good coming there I forgot how different it hits when you are driving in a bus together with people who are just as obsessed with planica

it was freaking cold there when I came there but at the end i was wearing only a t-shirt and leggings asdfghj

yukia came to the hill in the morning and did a whole ass workout/warmup and people around me were in awe how flexible he was (honestly same)

halvor also came but he literally stayed 2 seconds asdf

i was taking a pic of joachim and he noticed me and waved i wanted the ground to swallow me

marius waved at two women behind me (biggest fangirls i love them) but let me pretend he also waved back to me

you should hear the collective gasp when tande came and plonked himself on the bench below (and did not leave the whole fucking competition i never wanted my eyes to be on both sides of my head more)

danny proceeded to look up and pell off layers of clothing while eating a banana i'm fine

oh also he was wearing a slovenian cap???

villumstad is even prettier in person wtf

also heggli and pedersen were walking around all the time and kept tickling eachother? wholesome

i had the privilege of seeing maren ahhh she emits queen energy wherever she goes

domen casually jumped around 240m both times as a trial jumper noone knew what was going on

there was a moment before the competition when they played the slovenian anthem and literally everyone froze in their places and sung it it was overwhelming

there was a moment when everyone went mad and did not know how to jump less that 230m (it's safe to say that i didn't have a voice for solid 10 minutes)

WALTER WAS THERE they gave him a gift as a thank you and he was so happy ahhh

they gave cene a microphone between the rounds and he lowkey scolded us "now I'm going to yell at you, where have you been the whole weekend, i obviously needed YOU for a good jump"

won't ever forget the moment when i casually looked my phone between the rounds (there really was no time before) and tumble was spammed with messages about sevi retiring it felt like i was the only person on that damn tribune that knew

i cheered extra loud for him for all of you i hope you could hear me

kenneth coming to watch the second round and danny once again plonking himself on the bench next to him (don't touch me)

i teared up a lil while stephan was jumping not gonna lie

deschwanden was walking around lika a man on a mission idk what he was doing

naoki is the biggest ryoyu fan (we've been knew)

brekkl was also there!

never gonna forget the collective gasp for halvor's landing it was crazy i almost had to look away

also there was a jacuzzi(?) next to the hill at around 270m and the speaker joked that halvor went to say hello to them asdfgh

forfang loves to take selfies and he makes sure to put his sunglasses off so people can see his face (classic)

yukiya is fucking crazy the was this man jumped off the take-off and landed is insane

kamil is now officially the man with most jumps over 200m!!!

they were all taking group pics in the outrun and my poor camera shutter was overworked

the 'poof' sound when they jump off is still as amazing as ever

cene running up the hill to take a pic where he landed ahh this guy was so happy yesterday

ryoyu in a bucket hat is real and it's even prettier in real life (i screamed)

also if ryoyu doesn't post that pic of him hugging the crystal globe while lying in the snow with others sprinkling champagne over him and naoki throwing snow you have been robbed (i might do it for him)

also a mascot photobombed him and i could feel the pain he had for the ruined aesthetics

žaba took so much time for talking with everyone and giving cards he is the sweetest

hrgota walking around with the ski flying globe and looking as happy as ever bless him

there was a guy with the biggest ryoyu banner and it turned out it was his dad asdfgh

that moment when everyone came to the outrun at the end and bowed and then had a snowball fight was so damn special

naoki once again went feral and poor ryoyu had to run for his life

i could not leave after it al ended?? it felt like a dream idk

also I'm fucking glad i didn't because that interaction with ryoyu added 40 years to my life he is unreal

kamil's second home is kranjska gora he was strolling around in a hoodie and jeans like he owns the place

also he might have smiled at me (or at my mom who asked 'is this stoch' and he obviously understood asdfghj)

the vibes in kranjska gora after the competition are so special there was a group of slovenians who congratulated some norwegians for lindik's win and they congratulated them back for saturday asdfg

also not 2 minutes later a german came up to them and told them he met halvor (who was apparently very happy that he wasn't late on the table)? i swear these people saw each other for the first time

this pretty much concludes my 2022 experience i truly hope i didn't forget anything

My bio is a prime example of me pretending to be a slytherin when I’m really a gryffindoor. I’m glad it didn’t scare you away lol, I really am softer than I seem by quite a lot.

Therapy is very good. If you can get a good therapist, which is semi-rare, it’s really helpful. I hope as an adult at least you get someone who’s good for you, it really does feel very comfortable if you get it right.

Crowns are awesome it’s true they’re so lovely!! I am going to buy *another* I think because I want one that goes all around my head instead of a tiara (or along with my tiara).

Oh sexy is one of my favorite adjectives, it’s completely lost it’s meaning with me because I use I for everything lmaooo. I am aged, all of 16 years of age, and so know much about such things /j. My mom is a big hippie (if the white person buddhism didn’t tip you off) so she just sort of talked about sex and now it doesn’t bother me to talk about or read about but like that doesn’t mean I know anything actually about sex. A random thought: it’s so weird to listen to people who don’t like performing talk about theater or concerts. My mom and her friend and her teacher were talking about touring bands and they’re like how do you play the same songs over and over and over and I’m like well ofc it’s different every time there’s a crowd, there’s a pulse, there’s all sorts of motion to it and nothing feels the same but I didn’t say that out loud cause they’d be like weird actor child but yeah. It’s just interesting.

This is my favorite animal!!! It’s a barn owl. They’re so prettyyyyyyyy and if I had a daemon it would be this. (I have an oc with a barn owl daemon called Clytemnestra, or Clem for short)(a daemon is a psychically linked animal sidekick but it’s also part of your soul? Do you ever hang out with all of the boys together? What are those days like?

Oh man, all the time!

Usually it’s just stuff at home. Watching some shitty slasher flick, playing card or video games. The game nights get pretty intense because Eduardo and I are both pretty competitive. At this point, Jon and Mark have removed all traces of Mario Party from the house. It’s for everyone’s own good.

Mark and I will sometimes make references that Eduardo and Jon... Don’t really seem to get. Les Mis jokes are particularly abundant, and we’ve been known to break into an impromptu duet of The Confrontation from time to time. Bonus points if it’s in public. Eduardo pretends he doesn’t know us.

The only big issue when all four of us are hanging out is that Eduardo has a tendency to bully Jon. And Mark will either just let it happen or even slightly join in. As much as I’m in love with Eduardo, I end up having to take Jon’s side against him a few times and... He’s learning to back off a little? But there are still some incidents every now and then and it sometimes takes a little bit of work to get back to just having fun.

Occasionally, we do all go out and do something. We’ve been to ASDF Land once or twice. Or if there’s a new movie we’re all interested in, we’ll go to the theater and then stop at the nearest restaurant when it’s over. Just sit and discuss the movie, what we liked about it, what we didn’t. I steal some of Eduardo’s fries while he’s busy talking. He usually doesn’t notice, but he’s starting to catch on.

Either way, the night usually ends at home with everyone lazing around on the couch and talking about whatever random topics that enter our heads. Jon and I come up with some weird shit, ruining any chance Eduardo and Mark have at a normal conversation. They won’t admit it, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.

i get chiyo brainrot at the drop of a hat asdf and rn i'm just thinking about how she switches how she behaves towards a crush based on what she's decided to do about it. if she's trying very hard to ignore her feelings and carry on like normal, then it's way too easy for that person to get her flustered :' ) she's trying so hard to not let any of her romantic feelings show that honestly!! they do eventually start to slip out no matter how skilled she is at playing pretend.

however, if she's decided to pursue her feelings : ) she's on the attack, meaning she's purposely teasing her crush and trying to fluster them. she's making comments and asking questions that are meant to make them think " is she interested in me romantically?? " if she's got her resolve, then she's got her confidence, which means you have a menace on your hands and i love that about her <3
