Indie Game Spotlight: Retro Machina (@retromachinathegame​)

Time to grab your wrench and explore the mysteries of a robot-filled world in this week’s Indie Game Spotlight! Retro Machina is a single-player action and exploration game set in a retro-futuristic universe. The game shows the journey of a little robot unraveling the mysteries of a world long forgotten. We chatted with Orbit Sudio’s lead programmer Valnei, lead illustrator Rodrigo, and level designer and writer Elton to find out more.

Are there any specific games that inspired Retro Machina?

We are certainly inspired by several games since each team member has a different background of favorite games. We can highlight Supergiant games like Bastion and Transistor, Hyperlight Drifter, and Bioshock. We hope to bring together the best of these games in our retro-futuristic adventure.

The game has beautiful visuals. How long did it take the team to land on an "a-ha" moment when designing the game's art style?

The game is based on the retro-futuristic arts of the 60s. We take that nostalgic feeling of those images and adapt it to looks like a modern game. It took us about three months to find the style, reworking some assets several times until it was good.

What are some things we can expect to find in Atomic City?

Abandoned hundreds of years ago, the Atomic City keeps in its ruins some of the secrets of the past that culminated in the collapse of the world. Finding these secrets will not be easy, as the Robot must fight what remains of the ancient war machines that fought in the city.

What are the puzzle mechanics incorporated into the game?

In Retro Machina, it is possible to control any enemy at any time, and each enemy has different attacks and abilities. The player can use enemies to solve puzzles, attack other enemies during battles, and explore the game’s scenarios. Control skill upgrades are possible to increase the attack and defense power of controlled enemies.

What do you hope people take away after playing?

We hope that people feel they have participated in a great adventure—in the journey of a robot without purpose searching for its place in a world that no longer exists. Throughout the game, we also try to convey the “nostalgia for something that didn’t happen” characteristics of retro-futurism. We hope you enjoy it!
