just finished watching pluto (and just finished crying my fucking eyes out at every scene featuring epsilon and his kids) and while i understand that the focus is the philosophical and emotional narratives being explored and the weight that is given to each character, human or not, and how they grapple with their pain, it would have been kinda funny if the show had ended like this

Episode 1 of Pluto is an AMAZING first episode in that it sets up all the main themes of the story and it takes a big diversion from the main plot in order to do so

Robot rights, simultaneously having some prpgress in the rights they have while also lacking full autonomy, and facing discrimination alongside it

War and its horrors, (sadly still incredibly relevant even in 2024.)

Robots learning to be human, finding joy in human art and love, humans having to learn and grow because of robots

It and the series as a whole seem to say that humans have done horrid things, to ourselves and our creations, but there is hope that we can learn how to sing and thats goddamn beautiful

so: there's gonna be multiple versions of gerry that you'll be able to interact with anytime, regardless of what point in the timeline the blog is currently in. there’s timeline gerrys, and there’s default gerry.

default gerry falls under the tag archivist gerry. basic but i’m not about to replace all of his tags w/ default gerry because that’s a lotta posts. anyway, default gerry is timeline-less, dealing with the fears and doing his own thing gerry. just the same guy you guys have been interacting with pre-pause. able to take in spoilers, just going along with stuff. he's the one that, if there's no specifications about which gerry you're talking to, will be talking to you. thus, default gerry!

timeline gerrys are a part of the canon, ongoing overarching plot for this au. they’re part of the timeline, which is why they’re timeline gerrys :)

s1 gerry falls under the tag the unwanted continuation. called this because in this au, gerry was never meant to survive the cancer but was “saved” by elias so he could become the archivist. he also very much did not want this, so. it’s an unwanted continuation :D anyway, this gerry’s going to be a lot more sick of shit than default gerry. he will also have canon plotline stuff going on, so stick around for that!

for anyone who has interacted with gerry before the pause (5/14/2025): this one has not met any of you yet. do with that what you will :3

there will be other timeline gerrys in the future, for different seasons and whatnot. stay tuned for that :)

when interacting, please specify which gerry you are about to interact with.

one way you can do this by leaving a small note at the end of an ask. for example:

when using this method, you can either specify with the version (eg. default gerry, s1 gerry), the tag used for that gerry (eg. archivist gerry, the unwanted continuation), or, in some cases, a point in the timeline (eg. post *insert event that happened*)

another method is to mention something specific that happened to a gerry within the ask. for example:

this one is specific to default gerry, since no other gerry has glitterbombed elias on april fools. both this method and the previous can be used simultaneously. i would prefer if you use the first method since it’s more specific, but using the second is fine. if you think of other methods, let me know! hope this makes sense :)

if your ask is not specified, it will automatically go to default gerry.

A thing on Uran and Helena in Pluto

Okay a short little thing on Pluto. Uran and Helena are my absolute favourite characters in Pluto. Urasawa has always had amazing side characters, from Mr. Rosso in Monster to Lee Harvey Oswald and Jackie in Billy Bat to God in 20th Century Boys, but very few have tied off the emotional ends of the story like Uran and Helena.

Maybe I'm projecting here but much like myself I feel like Urasawa is absolutely obsessed with Frankenstein. And he recognizes the influence Frankenstein has on Dr. Umataro Tenma. Or at the very least, the similarities between the two. And so when he made the protagonist of one of his most popular works Monster, Dr Kenzo Tenma, he solidified that connection. Kenzo Tenma calls back to Victor Frankenstein needing to end his creation while also calling back to Japan's other famous Tenma, thus making the connection explicit. Another throughline between the three of them is that all three are father figures to their creations and have obligations to their children, though all three have varying levels of success with them.

I've only read what I like to call Urasawa's "Core Four", conspiracy minded thrillers that are essentially road trips featuring usually two main protagonists that we see the world through, Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto and Billy Bat. Though I still haven't caught up to Asadora and that could still possibly fit this mold, Urasawa's Core Four share a lot of themes and ideas. One of the most important being the responsibility for one's creations, whether it was Kenji Endo and the Book of Prophecy or Kevin Yamagata and Billy Bat or Dr. Kenzo Tenma and Johan, all of his protagonists could arguably be seen as someone with the need to take up the responsibility of their creations. So where do the protagonists of Pluto fit in there? That's where Uran and Helena come in.

But first, we should take a look at Pluto's themes. While I could be wrong, at a cursory glance, I feel like the general consensus towards it's themes is that it's about hatred. I don't really think that's what it is as I feel like Urasawa is more trying to show us what it is to be human and what it is to be alive. And in that, he has a hidden protagonist in Pluto. Someone who's influence snakes through the plot and isn't seen much, but without who the story's themes would remain incomplete. Pluto tackles what it is to be alive through many things, such as memory, sadness, grief, hatred, love and parenthood. But none of that works without the realization by Tenma of his own mistakes. And Uran and Helena bookend these revelations and are absolutley key to understanding that.

In my favourite chapter of the series, Chapter 37, Uran goes from person to person as she finds a way to deal with her grief and eventually comes across Tobio's grave, Tenma having left recently. It's an absolutely beautiful chapter that shows Uran's humanity and Urasawa's love for sharing these kind and soft moments. But it also sheds a light on Tenma as Uran realizes someone who was grieving has just left. Without saying much at all we realize that Tenma has finally realized his mistakes. In the process of grieving one son, he lost the other. While remembering Tobio, he let Atom go. His grief towards Tobio is clear in the following chapter, Chapter 38. All of the things he wanted Atom to be; Tobio come back to life, Tobio's ghost punishing him, Atom rejected. And Tenma could only see that rejection, and not what he had, another son.

Uran shows us very clearly what Pluto, the story, is. It's a chapter in their lives. And we've come into a story nearing the end for Tenma. And it's through the humanity of two absolutely amazing characters in their own right, Uran and Helena, that we are able to so fully understand Tenma. Despite being robots, these two characters are the most alive of everyone. They love fully and freely and are catalysts of change. Uran's vibrant and full of life in a way that really sticks out. And Helena has such depth that it's evident in every scene she's in. She's not pointed out to be made by any famous scientist so all the life she has is her own. These two represent the life of robot's more than any other characters in the series.

So it's that much more poignant when Helena finally breaks down after putting on such a strong front of everybody. Grief intersects and she brings out Tenma's sadness as well. They've both been putting up such strong fronts that it's heartbreaking to see them collapse. It completes Tenma's growth and strikes a heartbreaking contrast between the two. Tenma became the way he is through the loss of his son whereas Helena doesn't even get to remember her own loss. It makes you wonder if the grief for her and Geischt's child compounds her sorrow too.

Without these two and their grief, a large part of Pluto becomes inaccessible. Pluto is largely about death so when two characters come in who've never had a hand in the grim work of taking life, you see the world through a lens that's absolutely crucial in order to fully connect with all of the character's and their situations. Death and Grief has scarred the characters in Pluto. Time and time again they've chosen the worst path. They've chosen revenge and hatred. But Uran and Helena are different. Without them, the story is incomplete. They provide an alternative. They provide the path towards healing.

i fully get it bc i know what u mean about original astro boy manga being silly with it vs pluto being relentlessly sad. but i do think it's really important to say that pluto's themes draw on a LOT LOT LOT of stuff present in the original manga! like, the stuff about hate making a robot closer to a human/allowing them to kill a human despite most robots being physically unable to is pulled directly from the blue knight story. the original greatest robot on earth story that pluto is based off is about pluto struggling with not wanting to be a robot made only for killing bc he had a nice time hanging out with uran and doesn't wanna make her sad. epsilon still dies saving his adopted human son, and atom ends the story mourning for all the robots who got killed for goji to prove a point. the moral (which multiple characters say) is that what makes a robot OR a person strong is their love and humanity not their killing power, and it is both stupid and perpetuating the cycle of violence to force robots to hurt each other. the robot hate group man in pluto is inspired by the villain of a segment in astro boy tales part 2&3 where he literally is in a group wearing kkk hoods and does a whole pr attack about robots killing his son because he is campaigning to remove their rights.

and it's not just the stories pluto references! hell, in basically half the stories at minimum a robot is forced by a human to do a crime, the police go 'dang i guess we gotta take the rights of all robots away and destroy them for scrap :(' and atom has to find the human responsible so that doesn't happen (the third magician, electro, and his highness deadcross are some good examples). the plot of the story robot land is atom struggling with wanting to save a bunch of robots being beaten up and worked to the bone by their creator, but he can't because robots are still technically property and helping them escape would be stealing and therefore illegal. in the little intro comics tezuka drew in the collection, he literally says 'yeah this is about the vietnam war being awful' about like fully three different stories. and that's just off the top of my head!!

'what makes a person, where is our empathy, why do we quest for vengeance when it only sucks us into a cycle, have we lost our humanity' are literally the most important core themes of astro boy, which is why it's so so impressive for kids comics that are still broadly super super cute and funny!

legitimately sorry for putting a huge wall of text in ur inbox because i know it's unsolicited and probably uncool. but astro boy is super important to me and so is the idea that a story can be goofy silly child adventures and also explore dark and serious themes? so i had like. a moment when i saw ur post lol. i get it if u dont wanna read all this etc but i wanted to i guess encourage u to give the manga a second pass even if u aren't into pluto at all. there's an insane amount of stuff there that really really legitimately is that deep

Okay, may I just say, I'm absolutely loving your impassioned defense of the manga here. You're bringing so much ride-or-die energy to the table right now, and I'm loving it. But I've been slowly reading through the manga over the past few years, so I... kind of already know all this??? That's pretty much the whole reason I made the joke in the first place -- because there are so many similar storylines and themes between the original manga and the Pluto series, but the individual tones literally could not be more different. The fact that a grim dystopian anime about the horrors of war and the true meaning of humanity is saying the same exact things as a fun, lighthearted, campy manga series?? Sorry, but that's just hilarious to me.

Don’t mind me being horrendously cringe for a moment here but I’ve been watching MHA again and the interest reignited RAAAGH So !! I did what any person with a special interest would do and I made an Astro Boy x MHA crossover !!

For this AU, I’m basically just taking the premise of MHA and inserting Atom into the story by making him a student at UA (in class 1A of course). The plot would for the AU would be similar to the main story of MHA at the beginning but then shift when the story starts to get rolling in order to make the events of the story more Astro Boy-centred rather than stick to the MHA canon.

Atom’s hero name is “Astro” and got into the School through recommendation. He skipped the entrance exams because in this AU, Professor Ochanomizu and the Ministry of Science sponsors a lot of courses at UA, especially business and robotics courses.

This interpretation of Atom is a bit of a mashup between various aspects of both the 2009 Movie (like making his age closer to Astro’s from the film as he’s around 14 there) and the 2003 Anime (taking pieces like Ochanomizu being Atom and Uran’s sole carer, Atlas from the 03 show will also be a fairly big character in this AU)

Hi. I just found your Pluto posts and you just made my night with your analysis on it's themes of humanity, grief and hatred. I finished it last month and I still can't get over how deep and painful it all was.

Dare I ask, do you have any favorite scenes or character moments from Pluto?

I don't think it was meant to be funny but there's something darkly hilarious to me about how many people showed up to talk with Brau 1589 and that he (it?) was somehow the closest thing to therapy any of those characters got. Also the guy losing his human chassis because Pluto accidentally stole it for a few days so the poor dude was just wandering around in his construction body like the worst possible version of losing your car and house keys so you can't drive home.

Are Atom and Goji perfect AIs because they can lie? Was Geischt a perfect AI because he reacted in anger and murdered the man responsible for the death of his child? What do any of these scientists actually mean by a perfect AI, and what do they want to accomplish by creating one? What's the difference between the emotions of an AI and the emotions of a human?

Tenma is a disaster. Just. An absolute disaster. He's responsible for almost the entire plot yet takes responsibility for none of it. With both Atom and Goji we see him show up, do something deeply traumatizing to the robot, and then wander off before he has to deal with any potential fallout or consequences. The closest moment of connection we see him have is with Helena when she asks him how to grieve for her dead husband. He almost connects with Uran but her worldview is too different from his so he ends up insulting and belittling her instead. He lies to himself that he can bring Tobio back to life, he lies to himself that he won't try and fix Atom, does nothing to try and connect with Atom once it's confirmed Atom is alive again and leaves Ochanomizu to deal with any potential fallout, essentially sabotaging any possible fix he could have with his and Atom's relationship. He keeps showing up, saying cryptic things, then wandering off without bothering to provide any context. He also keeps warning people not to do something and then three episodes later we find out he said that because he already did the thing but didn't feel like explaining.

Did he honor Abullah's last request out of respect for his grief?

Is it a kindness for Helena to not remember her dead child? Is it a worse violation that her memory was changed without her consent or knowledge and then two different people in her life, Geischt and Atom, failed to tell her what was missing? Is she grateful Atom lied to her about not knowing what was in her missing memories?

Epsilon refused to be conscripted and dedicated his life to raising children who were orphaned by the war, and despite Goji showing he knows this ON SCREEN he still wants Pluto to kill him. Twice.

Goji being about to potentially kill Wissily by beating him with a pipe, a traumatized child he's had kidnapped, and Pluto not allowing him. Pluto begging Epsilon to kill him because he doesn't know how to stop.

Their haircut is a jellyfish cut, their hair is curly i just dk how to draw curly hair. Their natural hair color is dark brown. They wear snake bites but they have more that one set.

Their fashion style is grunge, they play several instruments including guitar, ukelele and piano. They also sing and are lowkey a theater kid.

Personality wise theyre literally just me when i was in middle-high school. A good way to describe it is bee from me and puppy cat mixed with like.. i dunno jesse pinkman?

Theyre shy when they dont know someone but once they get used to someone they open up pretty quickly. Then theyre just silly, theyre the type that they “flirt” by ragging on you/going out of their way to do stupid shit to get your attention. Theyre also a therapist friends, they don’t really know how to take care of themself emotionally, they just know they feel better when they’re around people they love so they do everything to be as good a friend as possible to them, cherishing them and being there for them, because it feels good to be needed, means theyre less likely to leave you.

They make a lot of sex and your mom jokes and just go out of their way to be silly. Theyre very physically affectionate/touchy, but until theyre close enough to gauge YOUR touching preferences, theyll ask first before touching you. (They hate being touched by people they arent close with) theyre demisexual and uranic, as well as genderfluid.

They also have a tongue piercing. They draw a lot, they constantly make references to pieces of media they like and pretend to be offended if you dont get their references. If they really like you and they know what snacks or candy you like theyll go out of their way to get it for you. They like parallel play type hang outs a lot, they get over stimulated often so just being int he same room as someone they care about and not necessarily interacting is nice for them.

Theyre the type to say i love you to their friends. They really like cuddles. They want a septum piercing. They have le mental illness, im not giving them a specific one but just.. you can see it in the way they act, if i hopefully write the fic youll see it for yourself. They take meds for said illnesses. Their tag on socials is real_xyno. Their last name is wolphe. Their nickname that only people theyre REALLY close with call them is Nyx.

In atom we see the possibility to overcome hatred or to feel hatred but choose not to destroy. There's strong themes of creation vs destruction here. "Nothing will be born from hatred" and creation being tied to plants with bora originally being a forestation robot reprogrammed into a world ending bomb, and sahad originally trying to un-dessert persia and fill it with flowers. Hoji is overwhelmed by hatred and does nothing but destroy. Thracia uses says the forestation robots are weapons if mass destruction as rational to destroy persia.

Of course there's the "what makes a human" question repeatedly discussed. A human is imperfect so a perfect robot is imperfect it hates, it kills, it lies. There's many times where robots are difficult to tell from humans like geischt, uran, atom, and goji (so much he thought he was human.

Really good story overall, i do love plot. This series is some of the best I've seen at narrative tension which I suppose is expected from a thriller author.
