This December marks 1 whole year

It's been a whole year since Cedar-dog walked into my life completely out of nowhere. I never went out looking for a dog. And despite all the peeps on Reddit telling me how hounds were "tough" for first-time dog owners, there was no way I would let this abandoned pup go to the pound.

I'm glad I didn't.

Having him in my life has genuinely enriched it. It's frustrating at times because he's got significant separation anxiety issues, but I'll do anything/everything I can to make things work. A year ago, I wasn't sure if I could handle having a dog (Cedar's my first dog, I mostly grew up around cats, lol). But now, I couldn't imagine my life without him.

My wife got Cedar a little bandana, and he somehow grabbed hold of it around 5 minutes after this photograph was taken and proceeded to show us exactly how he felt about it. lol

Look, statistically speaking, I will outlive Cedar. So, I want to ensure our time together is fun, that he gets lots of love and attention, and has plenty of toys and treats, along with a comfy bed and unique presents for special days (birthdays, Christmas, New Year, etc.). This is why I take SO MANY photographs. It's because one day, he won't be here... and these photographs will serve as a memoir of his life and time on this godforsaken rock we like to call Earth.

Minnie is about 2 and a half years old, 60 lbs (but should lose a few), and a little aloof at first but a totally wonderful girl. She’s nervous and distracted in the city and would be happiest in a home in the burbs where she can listen to wind and leaves instead of honks and beeps. This Plott hound mix is great with other dogs, very gentle, and super quiet so far. She could use some help with her confidence, basic training, and housebreaking, but we think she’ll get her swing of things much faster in a place where she’s not always in flight mode the minute she walks out the door. Minnie likes chewing her bones and sniffing around, and she’ll be a great companion for someone who’s into hiking and long walks. PLEASE HELP!!! So, I’m gonna ask you (yes YOU the person reading this) to do something. Since the end of the year is getting closer… ReBlog this (or don’t, I can’t really tell you what to do) and write something that your dog, cat, or other pet has done that may have saved your life and/or sanity this year. I’ll go first.

What they did: So, this year (2022) around Halloween I finally got COVID-19. Like BAD. I was completely bedridden (and I was fully vaccinated and boosted, except for the latest booster at the time).

Anyway, when I got COVID, I had to isolate for everyone. Nobody could come near me because I was afraid I would infect them. And Cedar-dog was the only living being that could be around me without fear of being infected (I double checked with his vet too, just to make sure he didn’t need to be away from me).

When you’re sick, and you can hardly breathe, and you fall into the high-risk category of people for COVID… it’s really REALLY easy to get lost in your thoughts when you’re trying to fall asleep in the dark at night. Depressing and horrible thoughts about dying. I think Cedar knew I was going through some shit, cause I swear he licked my face over and over again when I was drifting in and out of sleep. He eventually fell asleep next to me on the bed… also woke me up when I was having night terrors during my sickness by licking my face.

People might laugh it off… but I think having Cedar around kept me sane during the isolation period. I think I’d have gone crazy without him. 😓

So, I’ll forever be grateful to this doggo.
