her breath caught at the memories attached to the 2 story skeleton of a house she had ‘willingly’ walked into.

it had been almost 3 years since the last time kiara had walked out of tannyhill vowing to never come back. 3 long years of forgetting, she liked to think.

she thinks of how much her life has changed along the way, she had walked away that day and continued on with her life while in her mind, the house lay still awaiting her re-arrival.

leaving behind (almost) everything attached to her kook year, was what it symbolised- completely nothing to do with the tall blonde resident that would haunt the halls during her sleepovers or 12 hour stays, appearing in the corner of her eye as sarah would drag her by the wrist down the winding passages to her room to do whatever she had so kindly picked out for them.

kiara is standing on the first step of the stairs to tannyhill, having broken her promise to herself of never coming back but still thankful that she hadn’t returned for the reason she’d fought off everyday since her absence.

she isn’t sure what she expected, the house isn’t unkept by any means. rafe now owns the place, living there alone. the house stills stands so grand, so perfect, to a T.

the first room she stumbles upon as she stalks the corridors upstairs is the en-suite guest room.

it doesn’t look the way it used to, well, it does. it looks the exact same. it doesn’t feel the way it used to. all of the house she’s seen so far feels so phantom, so eerily empty, untouched.

maybe it’s the lack of background noise.

it was always there. no matter what, the liveliness, wheezie would be on the phone with her friends in the kitchen, complaining about something to do with her father, or rafe would have his friends over in his home gym, the thumping of weights from upstairs ringing throughout the house, or even the tv in the background.

hell, there was even the patter of footsteps that didn’t belong to sarah sounding behind her as she waited on the couch that night, phone in her hand, kellys instagram story open behind her knuckles- white with pressure.

“uh, hey kie, sarah’s not here.”

kiara quickly shakes herself away from that memory, as though physically moving her body could distract her from going down that rabbit hole again.

she leaves the room and walks with her head down to sarahs.

sarahs room is a time capsule, she thinks. for good and bad. the bed is made where kiara and sarah used to paint their toenails and talk about boys, kiara remembers always saying that no one in their year had ever caught her attention, which wasn’t entirely a lie.

her beaded necklaces still hang from her dresser, decorated also with shells and pictures and-

oh right. pictures.

kiara reaches over to sarahs’ vanity and one by one takes the pictures off of the tourist magnets that sarah had said add to the ‘island aesthetic.’

kiara smiles to herself at the memory. she thinks about how simple things were back then.

she continues plucking the pictures off the mirror, the photos all mainly of her and kiara, but sometimes wheezie. kiara grabs at the last one and looks down at it.

it’s a picture of her and and topper and some place she doesn’t recognise, except she does. the blue and gold light illuminating their faces, the slightly out of it look on both of them. sarahs’ birthday party. it’s a landscape picture them standing side by side, topper gripping his red cup, slightly distracted by whatever was going on to his left.

kiara grimaces.

she’s not even mad anymore. not at sarah. not at topper. not at anyone. she just doesn’t like the reminder of the night. that’s all.

in fact sarah sometimes brings the night up, as a joke obviously. kiara doesn’t find it funny- she doesn’t like to lie to sarah. so she doesn’t find it funny.

she scoops the pictures up- with the exception of the one from sarahs birthday, and prepares to leave.

she doesn’t make it far. she definitely doesn’t make it downstairs.

the warmth of his room is nice, she concludes. she knows he must stay in wards old room now but all her memories of him are still preserved here. even the ones she wants to forget.

the memories where her and sarah would sneak in and go through his things, laughing when they find the ‘gross’ magazines under his bed. sarah would joke about how the girls on the covers kind of look like kiara, they would both brush it off with a laugh, like all the women on the covers all having hazelnut skin and dark curls was some kind of crazy coincidence.

like when he would run in and scream at them for being anywhere near his ‘personal shit.’

like when his gaze would only fall on kiara as they both tried to explain themselves through choked out giggles.

like the way he put his hand on her thigh when he suggested getting back at sarah.

she’s currently standing in the middle of the rafe camerons old bedroom. the room itself isn’t as familiar as sarahs. she brushes her free hand over the top of his drawers and starts moving, there’s not at a lot of dust on most of it so she figures he must come here sometimes. she wonders why.

he’s in spain right now apparently. according to sarah, that’s what she’d said when she practically dragged kiara out of the shop and into her car.

she knew coming here again was a bad idea. she can still feel it. his phantom lips on hers.

her knees hit the front of the his bed and she decides there’s no harm in sitting down.

her index finger brushes across his fluffed up pillow. she knows it’s wrong to still think about it, especially because of jj, he loves her, she knows that. it should be that simple. it could be. maybe if every time he desperately tried to prove it to her she didn’t shut her eyes and think about rafe camerons hands slowly dragging downward on her body, moving lower and lower.

she’s lying down now, hopelessly staring at his ceiling like it could help her, like it could save her.

instead all it does is taunt her.

for 3 years, every time she had a man in her bed she would find herself seeing him out and immediately googling ‘is it true that you never forget your first time???’

for 3 years she thought about it.

how he had asked her what she was doing here so late.

how he had sighed and told her “i warned you she would do this kie.”

how he flickered his gaze downward when she crossed her legs onto the coffee table.

kiara shuts her eyes.

how he had invited her upstairs because ‘rose was coming home soon.’

how they had pretended to be an old married couple complaining about the noise from some party across the street.

how he had asked her what she wanted. how she wanted to do things.

shes holding her hands over her stomach now, sarahs pictures long gone.

“you’re sure?” he’d asked breathlessly. “mhm,” she murmered carelessly into his mouth

he’d practically torn her brand new sleep shorts into nothing trying to take them off so quickly.

he had kissed all the way down her from her forehead to inbetween her thighs, whispering about how special she is.

she had tugged at the waistband of his sweatpants until he sat up on his knees and pulled them down.

he had teased her for what felt like hours.

he had caught on her entrance with a gasp.

her free hand slowly moves down.

he looked her in the eye and silently asked for her permission. she had granted it.

Do you get paid when I borrow one of your books from the library?

Kind of. The library has paid for the book, and in many places (but not the US) there is a Public Lending Right, which means that the authors are paid a small amount for each borrowing, up to a maximum amount (so an Agatha Christie, or whoever the most popular living library author happened to be, doesn't take all the money allocated to be shared).

I'd love it if PLR reached the US. It's another place that Canada is way ahead...

How Do Writers Get Compensated by Streamers?

(And Libraries, but That’s an Afterthought)

Across several platforms, I see a lot of discussions about whether it is ethical to stream shows by problematic creators because it might give them direct revenue.

I think some of this is down to the fact that many people don’t know how remuneration of writers by streaming services works. It’s not a “they get paid per view”-thing. Or even a, “If I stream this, the writer will definitely get more money”-thing. (All of this obviously excludes other considerations, like giving people exposure/promotion etc).

The moment a show hits the screen, credited writers have basically already been paid. Whether you watch or not makes no material difference to that fact whatsoever—with one caveat:

For the big streamers, this usually only applies to the first 90 days. Because this is the time period that’s covered by what’s called the initial compensation period (for really small streamers, that period is usually a year).

After this, you enter the stage of residuals and exhibition years. So for every year the show stays on a streaming platform, credited writers will receive residuals. These usually drop year after year (so the longer your show airs, the fewer residuals you will get in terms of percentage).

What Does This Mean?

Watching a big budget show within the first 90 days doesn’t make a difference to a credited writer’s bank balance (I’ll get to the exception in a sec). Watching thereafter is also not tied to a “payment per view”, but simply to a formula per year the show gets streamed. You can find this more neatly explained on the WGA website:

Streamers usually also don’t take a show/old episodes off their platform after 90 days or a year just because viewer numbers naturally fall with time (it’s usually a pre-negotiated license period of 3+years), although that sometimes happens (if you have a look through Amazon’s and Netflix’s catalogue, you’ll find lots of older shows on there that probably hardly anyone watches).

So whether people stream or not usually matters most when it comes to renewals and cancellations, because that’s where a streamer makes or loses money (production costs vs overall new subscriptions etc).

For a show that’s finishing or already cancelled, the implications are far less material. And the first 90 days do not matter at all in this context (they only matter for a renewal, but in terms of residuals, they’re basically out of the equation).

This obviously doesn’t mean that a boycott can’t be a consideration for many other reasons. But if it is financial compensation via residuals that’s the main ick, it really doesn’t matter as much as people think.

This isn’t to tell people to do one thing over the other, but I see so much misinformation about the basic nuts and bolts of this on a daily basis that I think it’s maybe worth looking into it a bit more closely for many people.

What About Libraries?

As a little addendum (because that’s also something people frequently misunderstand): Not every country has a PLR scheme that remunerates writers for library loans. And the ones that do have a cap. So if you are worried about giving a writer royalties if you borrow their books from a library, first have a look if your country actually has a PLR scheme, and how it operates (you can do this here). As examples:

The UK has a PLR scheme, so secondhand is generally preferable over libraries because authors get royalties up to a cap (which, generally speaking, is a good thing, but it’s obviously worth considering if the author is a vile human being). It also needs to be said though that they, or their estate, need to be a resident or have a principal home in the EEA to qualify, but that just as an aside.

The US don’t have a PLR scheme, so the author gets diddly squat per loan.

Again, there are other, legitimate considerations as to why secondhand is preferable over borrowing (or vice versa), but if we are talking about royalties, that’s how it works…

what is Airlock?

it's approximately 5-6 years after the events of canon Overwatch 2. two major things have happened in Siebren's life at this point:

Siebren was put on trial for his association with Talon but got acquitted. The UN still didn't trust Siebren to walk as a free man with the powers he possessed. They offered him the options of being monitored by Overwatch when using his powers or don't use his powers at all. He agreed to no longer use his powers (to an extent)

Oscar de Kuiper was born; he was the genetically augmented child of Siebren and Kaori, hosting the same abilities as his father. For many reasons, including his birth, Siebren and Kaori decided to live in a small town close to Numbani that shared very similar ideology as the city.

With restricted abilities and a family to look after, Siebren did his best to continue living quietly. He purchased an observatory that was damaged back during the Omnic Crisis. He hired a brilliant young engineer by the name of Obiora to tend to the telescope and help up keep the observatory.

The political climate of the world at this time was very strained. Ramattra and his forces have been defeated, but it seemed like God AI's were stirring. There's no direct evidence of them completely waking up, but one thing was for certain: the Earth was running out of its natural resources at a fast rate. Pollution was rising high and the climate was fluctuating badly. People were speculating Omniums were being created in isolated areas, whether it was underground or under seas. Because of these lacking resources, Omnics and those with cybernetic augmentations were finding it both harder and more expensive to get their hands on new parts or resources to fix their bodies. Humans were often prioritized for repairs and Omnics were more or less ignored.

That was until Siebren discovered that Obiora had been working on a concept for a machine that would mine asteroids.

And so "Airlock" begins.

There was a little more to it: staff was hired and a decommissioned Omium restored to operate as their Earth base. Illari and Sloan were the first to be hired to fly out into the asteroid belt with Siebren, "corral" an asteroid, break it down into shipable pieces and begin the process of making the "Asteroid Farming Machine".

But what about Juno?

Overwatch had been kind enough to send supplies that would sustain the people on Mars. It was easier to ship things one way. Some plans were set up to get the Red Promise team back but it was a long process. It's through Efi that Juno found out a team was planning to set course for the asteroid belt. If they had a ship intended to go back and forth, then surely her family could hitch a ride back to Earth!

And so the Orbital Team was made! Siebren as the leader, Illari second in command, Sloan as lead mining expert and Juno as medic!

But little did the team know, someone else had a very similar plan set in the asteroid belt a little over 25 years ago.
