Q&A: Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto
Ask on the subject of Brau-1589’s knowledge, and Europol’s actions:
Regarding Brau1589, how did they know so much if they had no contact with the outside world? Is it because they're so advanced that they're able to garner signals from the other robots? Also, is it implied that when they removed the spear to kill Teddy, does that mean they die as well? Also on the subiect of Gesicht's child, Robita, what happened to them when Gesicht and Helena's memories were wiped? Were they dealt with by Europol? Is it something related to Adolf's brother's crime, on killing the robot children? Sorry for such a long ask, but I'm really glad to see another Pluto fan! I am overall really happy with the anime adaptation!
Don’t be sorry! I freaking love long asks! Here’s a long reply:
In volume 2 of the manga Brau-1589 learned about the outside world because Gesicht exchanged memory chips with him. Brau-1589 then knew everything Gesicht knew and even found the memories Gesicht couldn’t remember. Gesicht exchanged chips because he wanted Brau-1589 to tell him if his memory had been modified since Dr. Hoffman didn’t have an answer for him; Brau-1589 wouldn’t give Gesicht an answer but did freak him out by saying “500 Zeus a body” and then just started laughing at Gesicht. Gesicht was so overwhelmed by Brau-1589’s memory chip that he screamed in horror and quickly ejected the chip; his reaction afterwards was similar to someone getting sick and about to throw up. He tells Brau-1589 that he couldn’t read the data on the memory chip. In the conversation that’s also where Gesicht learns about Dr. Roosevelt. In the anime, Brau-1589 says that he knew Atom was awake, which Tenma finds impressive, but in volume 8 of the manga, Brau-1589 learns Atom is awake only after Tenma tells him.
Yes, it’s implied that Brau-1589 would die if the lance was removed, but Tenma could’ve fixed him up slightly, maybe? And we have Atom promising that they’ll see each other again, so I dunno... maybe he survived. I like the idea that he survived, but I also think it’s interesting that Brau-1589 would sacrifice himself to save humans by killing Teddy when, because he is/was the Blue Knight, he absolutely hates humans.
I think Europol would just send Robita to a scrap heap after they wiped his parent’s memory. Robita was tortured, molested (so others have told me, I don’t quite remember which volume or if that is actually implied), mutilated (while still alive), then killed by Haas. When Gesicht found Haas, there was the bag with the remains of Tobita’s body inside. Europol would need to do something which would leave no trace for Gesicht to find after his memory was wiped. It’s interesting to think what Gesicht did after he killed Haas. Gesicht might’ve taken Tobita’s body to Europol… or might’ve just been paralyzed in that alley, not knowing what to do, but just waiting for Europol to come find him. According to the manga, Gesicht wanted Europol to execute him after killing Haas… so I don’t know. The whole situation is depressing.

As vezes eu me sinto meio burra

Q&A: Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto
Ask on the subject of Brau-1589’s and Roosevelt (cont'd No. 2):
The impression I got was that Atom would have served in the front lines more directly if ordered, but instead was used mostly for PR. Having a 'young boy' on the front lines probably wouldn't have looked very good As for why he sent Brau, I would guess teddy might have anticipated Atom, but clearly didn't anticipate Brau. Or he didn't tell Brau to kill Teddy exactly, just stop him, and Brau decided to do that by killing him. Note, Brau mentions early on that removing the spear would kill him. That might have been a bluff, like the whole idea of him being trapped there, or maybe in killing Teddy he also killed himself?
Atom has a sort of no-kill rule in general (at least in other interactions of the character like the 2003 version), so I don't think he would've fought on the front lines. Based upon his conversation with Gesicht at the diner, he went to help the peace keeping forces around the same time as Epsilon being sent to do "clean up" which was after the war. In the manga there's a scene about the goal Darius has and tells Goji, “Use Pluto to kill them all! The five that destroyed my robot army! And the two that helped the occupation army enforce their so-called “peace”!” So Atom didn’t fight to kill the robot army unlike Mont Blanc, North No. 2, Brando, Hercules, and Gesicht. (Although, it could've been Gesicht and Epsilon who helped to enforce the "peace" but I don't see that as being likely). Atom wasn’t sent as PR by anyone, but people treated him like a “pop star .”
Teddy definitely wouldn’t see Brau coming, especially when he says in the manga that he was hoping Brau would join him. Teddy is all powerful (in a way...kinda), so there’s no way to stop him really other than killing him. I don’t know what stopping him would even look like though. That teddy bear creeps me out.
I think removing the spear definitely could’ve been a bluff, but the irony story telling wise, would be him dying/sacrificing himself to save the humans by killing Teddy, when, because Brau is the Blue Knight, he absolutely hate humans.

so I was going to write this in the notes of a different post but decided I'd rather do this in the plain:
if you're upset about Pluto being reclassified as a dwarf planet, think of it this way. Pluto was misclassified as a planet when it was discovered due to 1) expectations (we were looking for a massive Planet X) and 2) an oversimplification of its physical traits. Over the years, it became more and more clear that Pluto's behavior did not match its assignment -- especially as we became aware of objects like Pluto that were not planets. Finally, Pluto got reclassified into a place that matches where it belongs, where it can be with others like itself and not awkwardly forced into a role that never fit.
Pluto: putting the "trans" in "trans-neptunian object" since 2006. 🏳️‍⚧️

Q&A: Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto
I’m going to be answering all of your asks about the story under a cut so no one gets spoilers.
Ask about the caretakers’ decision regarding Wassily going to Oslo:
Hi. Idk if you’re still doing Pluto asks but I have a question. I felt a bit confused about why the care worker ladies just let a couple strange men take Wassily away without consulting Epsilon. Maybe I wasn’t fully paying attention and there was some larger unavoidable reason for them giving him up? Did I miss veiled threats or something? Just felt like the ladies were all “oh well, we have to I guess…” Many thanks in advance.
Listen! When I tell you that part of the story makes me rage like a white boy punching drywall I just—! Ugh. Just call Epsilon *dial dial, beep boop bop* 'oh hey Epsi, my boss, the dude who takes care of the orphanage, hey ya listen, I know you're getting grilled right now, but uh there are some wack dudes here who want to take your kid away, you cool wit dat? no? okay. how fast can you get back here??' Done. Easy. Epsilon wouldn't have been put in the situation to go into Abra's trap. *punching drywall
I digress.
Here is my theory as to why they justified letting Mr. Johansen take Wassily without telling Epsilon based upon the circumstances and other factors which might have motivated them.
Of the seven most advanced robots, Epsilon has the most powerful and destructive capability. If he had joined in the war a lot of battles would have ended very, very quickly if he unleashed his photon energy.
Tumblr media
The world might have believed a lot of people and robots wouldn't have died if he'd joined the fight. So they could've blamed him for not preventing so many deaths.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the manga, it's stressed that people around the world very much despised and even abused Epsilon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only did the world hate him for not fighting in the war, but also for raising human children.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though the war was over, Epsilon was still contemptible.
What I think is interesting is the false claim Mr. Johansen makes about him and his wife visiting the orphanage before, (in the anime, he says they've visited several times). Perhaps he's implying that Epsilon hadn't let them foster Wassily in the past and he's come back to try again but without Epsilon present to deny him. A child protection service would find Mr. Johansen, "a famous figure", being denied numerous times concerning if he had reported that experience to them. They might even send a representative with Mr. Johansen to see if something could be done about it...
Tumblr media
What Ms. Griffith I think has to weigh is whether to deny Wassily being adopted because Epsilon wasn’t there to approve it, which would likely cause further scrutiny and a full investigation into Epsilon's orphanage as to why/if he's preventing children from being adopted and raised in a normal, human family environment possibly resulting in all of his children being taken away and the orphanage being shut down—or let Wassily be taken. They might even want to still take the other children away simply because they finally have enough of an excuse to prevent Epsilon from raising children, no matter how small the excuse was. Ms. Griffith knows the children are cared for by Epsilon more than any human could and she doesn't want that to stop. She could fear that if Epsilon had been there or if they had called him, that he might have denied Wassily being taken by Mr. Johansen which wouldn't have looked good, (unless, of course, Epsilon was given the opportunity to research the man and find out he had a fake identity and was working for Abullah). If the man accompanying Mr. Johansen had the authority to take Wassily away because of being some kind of child service representative, then maybe the caretakers legally didn't have a choice and they really were going to take Wassily no matter what. Letting Wassily be taken away would be beneficial to the orphanage and the children under Epsilon's care financially and maybe even legally.
Tumblr media
So maybe the caretakers made the decision with the best interest of the other children in mind—and even to protect Epsilon.
But in the end, no one could protect Epsilon. Wassily and the other children still lost the one person who loved them more than anyone else in the world ever could...
