Now I'm just thinking about Potter and how neatly they showed us exactly what they wanted us to expect from this man. Dude walks into a MASH unit with all his regular Army trappings and, like, of course he's going to act exactly like he's been taught to as a superior officer. Everyone here went through basic. They all know the rules. Obviously they're all going to follow them.
I feel like somewhere in the middle of reading Hawkeye's file specifically is where the shift happens. This man is absolutely ridiculous. It's mindboggling, everything that he got away with to the present day. In fact, it's impressive. Sherm got into the Army at age 15, for Christ's sake. I feel like he can remember exactly what it felt like to be a child joking around and pulling pranks with his friends in between moments of carnage. He reads over some of the shit Hawk's done and probably wishes he'd been able to do it himself in his younger days.
That's where the switch finally gets flipped. What the hell is he doing, trying to treat this like a regular Army camp? He can't hold rigid expectations over them. It would be absurd. All he can really hope for is to request that maybe they not fuck around so bombastically that they all end up in hot water because of it. But he's not gonna sit down and have a quiet, reflective moment about it—that's not his style. He muses on things while continuing to move forward through his day, stoic, solid, prepared for any emergency that might occur. It's why the shift feels so sudden to the audience. He made his decision to treat this camp like human beings ripped away from their homes and coping the best they can far before he admitted longingly how much he could use a belt. He simply learned to play his cards as close to the chest as possible long, long ago.

Books of 2025: BLACKFISH CITY by Sam J. Miller.
Finished this last night! The jacket copy starts, "When a strange new visitor arrives in a floating city in the Arctic--humanity's last hope after the ravage of climate change--the city is entranced. She's riding an orca and has a polar bear at her beck and call," and, honestly, I'm sold (love a good floating city!).
I adored the setting and the worldbuilding--supremely cool city that was thoughtfully developed--and I loved how the narrative came together at the end. All the POV characters felt distinct (thank heck, because there were Many of them), and I had a fun time figuring out how to piece all the relationships together and percolating on The Science. Overall had a great time!

i know it's in my blog rules to not talk about politics here but i'm gonna break that for a hot second and vent cause idgaf wtf was this election.
i genuinely hate my country so fucking much. for a country that just doesn't give a damn about any of it's people, the polarizing extremes of both sides, it actually sucks so much. and the only thing you can sit and do is just watch it all go to shit and say "well i didn't vote for them". because there's nothing you can do.
obviously the abortion amendment didn't pass in my state and neither did the marijuana amendment (which is shocking...?) but it's just crazy at how these events turned out.
america is fucked. literally. like it's so broken. everyone pushing the blame onto how some candidate ran their campaign, when we saw a convicted felon and sexual abuser who staged an insurrection, hold a nazi rally. and yet this person still won the popular vote.
it's so frustrating to see because i worked at the polls all day yesterday, and watching people come in with their merch donned all over their chest with proud and bright smiles makes me genuinely speechless at this whole thing.

Sailing to the north pole has been long a very favourite subject for closet lucubration; and as long as a man, in such circumstances himself harmlessly chooses to amuse or entertain his friends with his effusions through the medium of a magazine, such pursuits are altogether allowable but where such visionary schemes are in contemplation, as would mislead the public mind, in the same manner as the writer misleads himself not pausing over facts, and maturely weighing the consequences, the prudent will be careful how they admit his opinions, however plausibly dressed up...As long as the axis of the earth remains in its present angular position so long will ice be found in those waters, and so long will navigators find obstruction in every attempt to penetrate by the Pole towards the northern Pacific.
(Greenland, the adjacent Seas, and the North-West Passage to the Pacific Ocean, by Bernard O'Reilly, p.1818)
I loved seeing this kind of scathing opinion from an average person of the era. And this came right as interest in the passage was being revived by Barrow. That's so cool.

I understand that traitor Fugo as a concept isn't popular probably because of how he used to be (still is? I haven't seen it myself) hated on pretty badly for staying behind as well as Purple Haze Feedback being more popular than a retconned idea Araki mentioned like once.
However, it's a fun idea for me and I am running with it.

When you're free but on your days off everyone is always working or busy but when you work they're always free asking to do things and you can't
Anyways I got the new Skulduggery Pleasant book and it's signed so I'm content. I'm just existing a little. Gonna tidy up things that need done and make food before I do things here or play some games!
