2020 Santiago Street Art

In the 1970s Chile’s dictator Pinochet created a constitution that was not changed after the country became democratic. At that time (and in reality, for decades before and in many other countries around the world), the powerful had helped concentrate wealth into the hands of a few by favoring friends who could run major empires / monopolies controlling railroads, steel, electrical and water utilities, and mining. The average household in Santiago lives on $550 (US dollars) a month. The people are frustrated at failing infrastructure and increasing prices without substantial improvements in education, salaries, etc. The protests in October 2019 were sparked by a subway fare hike of 30 pesos, about $0.04. But that was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. Street art reflects the economic difficulties, like “it’s not 30 pesos, it’s 30 years” [of economic depression, government neglect, and police brutality]. Protestor started with a day of fare evasion (jumping turnstiles), and it ignited chaos.—

The people are also fed up with a government they feel acts with impunity. Much like Turkey, the police use heavy handed tactics to control protests, resulting in use of tear gas, firing rubber bullets at head height resulting in many people being blinded, and over 48 deaths. The people are pissed off and feel they have nothing to lose. They feel their human rights are being violated, and the only way the government will pay attention was to riot in the streets. The largest protests in Santiago had over a million people. The streets are covered with graffiti all around the city, even on iconic and historic buildings like the national museum for fine arts.—

The graffiti reflects so many sentiments. Anger at the blindings manifests with red spray paint over eyes of public sculptures, and red tears in the shape of the nation. The police and military are very negatively regarded. ACAB is all over town (it stands for “all cops are bastards”), as well as its numerical code 1312. Other code 2019 = 1973, comparing Piñera’s government with Pinochet’s. Silouttes of Molotov cocktails pop up. An unarmed man named Camilo Cantrillanca was shot in the back by police, but it was covered up until video evidence showed the police had lied about him having a weapon, and his image is plastered all over town. Paco and Yuta are slang for police, and on every corner you see scrawled the police kill and assasinate. A black dog that attacked the police has become an icon for resistance.—

Right now there is relative calm because the government agreed to take up a new constitution by April 2020. Most of the demonstrations are peaceful. Large protests are reserved for Friday nights, and we were leaving Santiago Friday morning for the coast. We did see some unrest Thursday night and jumped in a taxi when we saw people burning trash cans in the street. Or taxi driver got us around the street action and to our hotel—and, we later found out, gave us a counterfeited 10,000 peso note. Saturday morning we visited Valparaiso and inadvertently walked through an area that had protests on Friday—the tear gas lingers where it sat on the ground. All of a sudden, our eyes and nose were burning, and we had to escape to fresh air, quickly terminating our city tour for the beach instead. —

I don’t know why but for some reason Americans have a big problem with valuing their convenience and comfort over others lives and safety in the name of freedom. There’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what freedom is. Freedom is the right to do what we want, but the second what you do interferes with other people’s freedom and safety, you’ve fundamentally misunderstood what freedom is. It’s troubling that our society is founded upon this misunderstanding. Our clothes are made in sweatshops, our technology is made by child and slave labor, only to be sent back to their countries as trash after we’re done.
