Comic book publisher Devil’s Due will launch a brand new one-shot comic book featuring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The book, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: New Party, Who Dis?, is the brain child of Devil’s Due publisher Josh Blaylock. Cortez made headlines in the comic book world when she quoted Alan Moore’s Watchmen on Twitter signalling she was a comic book fan. Supervised injection sites are not new, despite the controversy that continues to plague them in the public eye. Combining a safe space to inject IV drugs with trained health professionals, injection sites were being legalized throughout the 2000s in Canada, Spain, Luxembourg, Norway, and Australia. Such a program is an example of #harmreduction, a set of practical strategies meant to reduce the negative consequences of, for and by drug users. “Our Best Shot: The True Story of an Illegal Supervised Injection Facility in the USA” is a short, immersive little comic that comes from firsthand experience- a great resource for anyone who is curious as to what safe injection sites do or how they work. It’s also an example of #directaction , whereby activists and those interested in seeing policy change exercise the power they have to directly reach certain goals of interest, in this case, reducing drug user deaths and reducing the spread of infectious diseases. You’re not impressed by the art or showiness of this comic, and this comic doesn’t give a shit. #hedoesntrespectyou if he intentionally breaks your property. Damaging other people's property is a criminal offence. One thing I did not realize at the time. If a stranger purposely damaged my things would I let them get away with it? No!! Would you?? Why should we allow those who are meant to love us treat our things that way?? A number of my things were destroyed in a fit of anger. Including my phone, as drawn here. My mistake was not going to the police sooner. Don't let that be you, next time that could be your face they are damaging.

🚺 It's international Women's day again 🚺 I drew this comic in 2019. Uyinene Mrwetyana had just been murdered in cold blood, during the middle of the day, at a post office. It was a few weeks after Women's Day in South Africa on the 9th of August. At the time it seemed like people were finally paying attention to the issue of gender-based violence, in South Africa at least. 🚺 Women are cautioned a lot about their safety. They're told not to wear certain things, go to certain places or be out at certain times with the wrong people. None of this "advice" makes a difference of course other than blaming the victims. Women are getting killed and raped without setting one foot out of their own homes. The perpetrators are often people they know and trust. They're getting murdered going about their daily lives. 🚺 It's 2021 now and Miché Samuels was recently murdered by her own husband during rush hour traffic. Emotionally charged issue #39 continues to stay true to #DCcomics promise of #GreenArrow taking on the #politics of today. In this issue we find #OliverQueen working in #humanitarianaid in a #MiddleEastern country. He has come because a country has faced civil war, children are missing and a terrorist cell is strong arming the civilians. Only a few short pages later we are faced with the politics of terror. We see #childsoldiers hell bent on destroying their country for a new image, and because of a new leader that promises them power instead of oppression. Evening! Those who follow me here (though there may be few) may recall I took a hiatus from December till late January. I was actually working very hard on comics but of a different sort.

For past year, I’ve been co-curating an art exhibition at UMass Amherst for politically engaged graphic novels. We were even in the paper this week, check it out here. We have over 100 pieces of original artwork from very important comics!

Anyhow, It’s pretty rad and I can talk a lot more about it at another time; however, to continue with that theme, here is a strip I started on November 9th. I was struggling to find a way to finish in a response to the election from an education perspective. After witnessing the vigor and strength so many have displayed already, I figured out how I wanted to end it. I do hope you enjoy it.
