The intro to Staircase Wit

New tattoos and another Friday night. I am surrounded by a million midnight ghosts, but none of them can touch Ben Barlow. To some of my friends, this is not a surprising state to find me in. To others, my frenetic thought pattern and the absence of eyeliner causes them to retreat; ‘We’ll come back in the daylight,’ they decide, ‘she’ll be more predictable by then.’

I’m not writing, but rather, waiting on a few phrases to condensate. If I reach for them, they’ll only float further away. So I lie around, holding my sides together and looking like Jack Nicholson smiling at specific lyrics. “If anything ever happens,” I once said, “At least I’ll have the way Ben sings oh my friend.” Distorted riffs defibrillate a frightened heart, no matter how generic they are.

What are the phrases being used for me lately? Mean. Off. Intimidating. Held it back, lost the nerve. To some of my friends, I’m the damsel in self-imposed distress that commonly zones out and indulges in forms of silent communication. “You think so loud,” he says. To others, I’m just a reflection of whatever they came to this blog looking for.   

Most of you will take this as a throw-away post; it’s not about love or loss, I haven’t been to any shows and my Codes have been keeping their magic kinda close to their chest pieces lately. This is just me in-between songs, worried about last weekend, anxious about all the things I’ve been putting off, and self-medicating with a pop punk playlist.

yo so i've been into hiphop, r&b/neo soul since i was small (my dad is a r&b/jazz musician:) ), but in the recent years i've also come to really enjoy punk, popunk, scene music and culture as well.

i've wanted to get into the fashion as well, but it is very different from the hiphop/soul type fashion that i've grown up with and wear.

i see a lot of ppl say "just combine it!" when i ask questions about two different subcultures, but i honestly don't know how to do that with how different it is.

i dont want to just use certain punk elements in my outfit cause i dont want to be no poser, and i dont know if i could just "dress" punk one day and then totally switch it up another.. any advice how to navigate this problem?

you can totally combine or rotate the styles of subcultures youre involved in!! I typically rotate between punk, goth, and looking like a wizard. sometimes I take elements of all three for an outfit.

when it comes to combining styles, think of what elements and motifs from each you like, and how they could work together. experiment with what's in your closet. wear r&b shirts with tartan pants or punk shirts with baggy hiphop style pants, for example.

play with accessories. spikes, chains, bandanas, hats... slap a patch on a bucket hat, have fun with it!

wearing clothes does not a poser make, you know? the poser issue comes in when people don't actually participate in the subculture, and it sounds like you understand what it means to be part of one.

i’ve also always disliked pop-punk but sometimes i not sure how to define the genre or if im just being a hater. what’s a song/band that you consider a staple popunk example?

i was exaggerating a bit when i said i hate pop punk; i just don't like, uh, most of it. green day is quintessential pop punk and i still believe that "dookie" is an excellent album. everyone still has a soft spot for blink-182 and i don't dislike them but i don't really go out of my way to listen to them. i still kinda dig sum 41 from time to time. new found glory and yellowcard were alright.

i really really hated simple plan and good charlotte when they started hitting it big (if my lame 12 year old ass could tell you were a poser, you were a fucking poser) and my haterism just kinda grew from there as pop-emo blew up. i still hate fall out boy, a lot, and while i don't really have anything against my chemical romance's music i still find their fandom very irritating

i really like piebald though. check out "we are the only friends we have," great album.

3. How old were you when you first got into Kpop?

Okay so it was in 2020 during Covid and I was 22. Sometimes I'm sad I didn't get into it sooner because I feel like I missed out on so muchhhh but then again now I get to watch hours upon hours of content to catch up and at least my faves are still active!

4. What song(s) took you a while to warm up to?

Love Phobia by Onew took me a while, I listened to it the first time and wasn't immediately sold somehow. But after hearing it more I think I somehow suddenly 'understood' the song? And now it's one of my favourites!

....And I think every Shawol experienced this but SHINee's Ring Ding Dong XD. At first I was like what the heck is this. But now I just love it. It's so iconic. I am genuinly unironically vibing to it these days. Just Jjongs voice in the beginning coming in unannounced with BABYYYYYY ... you know how it is LOL

16. Which concepts do you love?

Okay so I don't know if this refers to photoshoot concepts or songs but I honestly think it's the same for both. Usually I like the fierce/dark concepts more. For example, BTS Black Swan and Fake Love styling and SHINee Lucifer and Obsession song.

In black swan, them sprouting wings?! The lyrics of the song, the setting of the music video like woah. And in fake love especially the choreography and the outfits.

Also Onew had different concepts for his Circle album photoshoot and one of the concepts was 'Ocean' and these pictures, I just love them so much. Like woah, just look at him??

Thinking a little more about the concepts I love, I guess I like the emo songs and the emo concepts the most? hahahahha I mean I am part of the popunk/emo music to kpop pipeline so there we have it I guess LOL.

Also honorable mention goes out to whatever the fuck Key was up to in his Gasoline album concept because WOW I loved it. Some typa witch doctor stranger things type of stuff. He also combines it really well with a retro vibe which I LOVE. Anyways, this is the one I'm talking about:
