da2 isn't the best dragon age game *because* it's openly a tragedy, but being a tragedy forces a level of narrative coherence that the other games in the series don't have, and *that's* what makes it a better game.

okay, so. dragon age 2 runs on nested foreshadowing and a limited set of themes that almost every character and plot beat fall into: love is not enough, wealth is not enough, power is not enough, good intent is not enough. the problems you run into are structural, rather than individual, and your ability to resolve them as one person is strictly limited. the arishok is a central figure for this, because he prefigures every other tragedy and makes the game's thesis statement as clear as possible. he doesn't want to be in kirkwall, but he is compelled to remain until he gets back what was stolen. he doesn't want to lead a coup attempt, but he is compelled by qunari codes of justice to act. he does not want to die and fail his duty, but but he is compelled to by the other two impossible demands. every tragedy in kirkwall is the result of too many people with wildly different definitions of justice crammed into one place specifically designed to maximize human misery and suffering, and so you get a wonderfully nested narrative onion where each quest reinforces that idea, where there are no good options, just positions you can take — even the affinity system plays into that, where constantly gassing up your friends or constantly pushing them to change are equally correct ways to go, but ones that won't ultimately make a huge difference in their lives or characters, because no matter how much they like you, they're not under your control.

this coherence is even justified by the framing device. of *course* the moral of the game is "insisting on a dogmatic, narrow idea of justice destroys individuals and societies," it's a yarn being spun by varric the con artist to a chantry cop!

neither origins or inquisition play with that sort of narrative complexity. origins is a jaundiced hero's quest, certainly, but it's still basically a hero's quest; inquisition has a number of characters who question what you're doing and why, but the multitude of voices pulls the game in too many potential directions. DA2 was so constrained in its production that it pulled on decidedly ancient theatrical traditions, and it worked so, so well

Saw one of those theorizing Reddit polls on the P4 Reddit, asking if people would want a possible Yosuke romance in the remake and it's breaking my heart that so many people in the comments are either "Eh, I'm straight so it doesn't matter" or "No because I'm romancing x other character anyway" or "No because it ruins his character by forcing us to reject him if we don't want to romance him" (That last one is like... uh.... then what about all the OTHER romanceable characters?!)

hi guys long ff7 idea rant/ramble below

I've seen this idea mentioned in a few posts here-and-there lately, but I feel like people really gloss over the inherent horror aspect of post-Nibelheim Sephiroth's body just, , being a projection. He's still there, yeah, but his true body has long since been dissolved in and eaten away by the lifestream.

If you think about the lifestream like the burning, acid-esque way we think of mako in ff7, then imagine how incredibly horrific and excruciatingly painful Sephiroth's death must've been.

WE NEED MORE FF7 HORROR GUYS PLSSSSS 😭😭🙏🙏 Because think about it: the image of Sephiroth being burned and dissolved alive when he falls into the lifestream, his real body not actually existing anymore, his "body" being a form that- hypothetically- could take any form he wanted, etc. etc. etc.

Imagine aus where him coming back again, and again, and again, and again acts like a purgatory he can't escape, and he's the only person who's unable to realize he's in one. An au where, miraculously, his physical body DOES come back but it's wrong. His body is inhuman, his flesh and bones are still dissolving, and he's nothing more than a crazed, lost spirit that Jenova refuses to let find any peace.

And think about Genesis!!!!! I see SOOO many fics completely gloss over Genesis and it's like NOOOO IT'D MAKE EVERYTHING SO MUCH MORE TRAGIC AND INTERESTING PLEASE SHOW HIS REACTION TO SEPHIROTH RETURNING BACK FROM THE LIFESTREAM FOR THE NTH TIME 💔💔💔💔 ESPECIALLY when he doesn't come back the same!!!!

For a while I've been tempted to write about this kind of stuff myself, but it's hard to find the motivation to write and finish something 😞 Anyways that's my rant ok bye xoxo 💋

Okay, ENOUGH!!! If they’re going to kill Bobby dead, then I demand a different member of the Grant-Nash family joins the 118 to carry on his legacy. It’s May or Harry’s turn to drive Athena crazy with the 118 stories, and diving right into the shenanigans.

May as the 118 probie would go monumentally hard. She’s already got lots of experience being cool under pressure as a dispatcher. And we’ve seen a firefighter go to work at dispatch (Eddie), so I think it’s only fair if we see the reverse with May! The fandom is always saying that we need more women at the firehouse, and think of the fun dynamic she has with the core four! Also, I’m not a RaviMay(?) shipper, but they would be such an amazing duo of “looks grounded but is just as insane as the rest of the team”. Bobby was her dad, and if May forewent college for a year because she wanted to protect her mom, she would totally become a firefighter (or a paramedic!) to honor her fallen step-father. If they wanted to end the storyline down the road, a paramedic May could always go the doctor (or nurse!) route like Hen was going for until they derailed like two seasons worth of development (like, I’m grateful bc I wanted Hen to stay for ever and ever, but what the heck was up with that wasted storyline). And maybe I just have such a fondness for May because she sees her family so clearly, but she would absolutely want to make sure that the team Bobby tried so hard to save stays safe, especially Chimney, who Bobby literally died for, and Buck, who May is fully aware was Bobby’s son in all but blood (so. her brother!).

And since the writers have never cared about a consistent timeline anyway, Harry being 17 means absolutely nothing to me. They could say he’s 18 and the newest probie in 9x01, and I wouldn’t even blink an eye. Give it to me. I know we haven’t really seen a lot of Harry lately, let alone his future aspirations, but having him parallel May’s dispatch journey (with the potential for a permanent spot on the 118 team) would be so much fun!! Anything to see more of him on the screen! Especially with Harry (he’s younger, the argument has already been had with May), there’s a potential for seeing Athena wary of the idea of her child as a firefighter after just losing her husband to the job. I think there’s even some promising arc in here to mirror Buck’s journey as a probie (albeit less dramatically) with Harry, through grounding him in the community and giving him a purpose (since we haven’t seen anything like this for Harry just yet).
