day 6 of 183 after my posterior spinal fusion to correct my scoliosis and i’m already sick of this shit. thankfully i don’t have much pain but the restrictions are so annoying.
no bending, twisting, or lifting more than 10 pounds for the first 3 months of recovery, or more than 20 for the last 3. i have to keep my shoulders and hips in line at all times.
i can’t do any sit ups so in order to get in and out of bed/any reclining position i have to log roll. if i want to sit with my legs straight out in front of me i have to be sitting at a 45 degree angle.
in order to keep my back from stiffening up and hurting i have to get up and walk around every 45-60 minutes, which is really annoying if you’re a lazy bitch like me.
i have been incredibly fortunate with my recovery so far. my sister had this surgery in january and was is so much pain she needed oxy to manage, so far i’ve only needed oxy twice. if i need more than ibuprofen or tylenol then i just need half a valium. i was up and walking the day of my surgery and walked down to the gift shop on day 3. when i told my surgeon he compared it to walking to something a mile away.
despite how fortunate i’ve been i’m annoyed with everything i need to do to recover. i’m annoyed i have to get up every 45-60 minute when i want a lazy day. i’m annoyed it hasn’t even been a week and i still have 6 months of restrictions left. i’m annoyed of the pain and that i can’t sit comfortably. i’m so done with this shit and i can’t wait for it to be over.

Lexington Shriners Hospital Provides Hope for Patient with Congenital Scoliosis

Even when he was only 7 months old, Adam (AJ) Stapleton’s mother, Jennifer Davis, noticed her son was leaning to one side with one shoulder lower than the other. By age 2, AJ was visibly rocking from side to side as he walked. That year, he was diagnosed with infantile congenital scoliosis. He work a back brace as he grew older, but his scoliosis still became more pronounced. David decided to research hospitals that specialist in AJ’s diagnosis.
“Over and over I heard we should wait until he was 14 to have surgery,” said Davis. “We knew his scoliosis was getting worse because he had trouble breathing and he ached a lot.”
Advice that Made an Impact In eighth grade, AJ’s school nurse noticed his discomfort and spoke with the principal, the parents of a child treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children—Lexington. The principal suggested Davis call the hospital for an appointment. “I made the call, and three days later we had our appointment,” said Davis. “He had an MRI, and when Chief of Staff Henry Iwinski, M.D., saw the results, he placed an arm on AJ’s shoulder and said, ‘I believe I can help you.’ We have been on the road to hope ever since we heard those words.”
AJ was placed in halo traction, which helps manipulate bones so they will start growing in a straighter pattern. Halo traction is a method used in severe cases of scoliosis to slowly and gently stretch the soft tissues connected to the spine in order to obtain some correction of the curve before surgery. When AJ started the traction, his scoliosis was at 150 degrees, but after several weeks the traction had decreased his curve to 80 degrees.
“AJ has been such a pleasure to work with,” said his physical therapist, Shelly Ryan. “He has been very motivated by his progress during the process and is looking forward to seeing his friends at school with his 'new’ look. This is a life-changing event for AJ, and I am proud to be here to help him.”
Shared Experiences Following the halo traction, AJ, who is 15 now, had two surgeries scheduled for September 2013. The two surgeries would correct his spinal curve from the front (an anterior fusion), and later correct the curve from the back (posterior fusion). AJ was nervous about his upcoming procedures until he met fellow scoliosis patient, 20-year-old Ethan Hensley. Ethan had the same surgery several years ago and was at the hospital for a short stay. Ethan was able to give AJ insight about what to expect with the surgery and advice on how to recuperate after the procedure. “They really connected, and Ethan was such a blessing for AJ,” Davis said. “They plan to stay in touch after AJ leaves the hospital.”
On September 10, 2013, two months after his first conversation with Dr. Iwinski, AJ had a successful spinal fusion. The halo was removed, and he wore a brace for six weeks. After six weeks of homeschooling, AJ was anxious to see his classmates, who immediately started planning a “Walk for AJ,” with the proceeds to be donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children. “I plan to walk with my classmates the entire way,” AJ said, “ and thanks to my surgery, I can.”
