In conclusion, Nasya therapy in Ayurveda emerges as a natural and holistic solution for respiratory well-being. Its diverse benefits, from relieving sinus issues to promoting mental clarity, highlight its significance. 17 Jan 2024: Miscarriages in Gaza Have Increased 300% Under Israeli Bombing
Humanitarian agencies say women and menstruating people are also facing alarming rates of severe infections due to Israel's blockade of supplies and water.
Shortly after Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip began in October, global health groups raised alarms that there was no longer anywhere safe for pregnant women to give birth. More than three months into the siege, conditions have only worsened, and pregnant and menstruating people are especially at risk. Health care workers report a 300% increase in the miscarriage rate among pregnant people in Gaza since Israel’s attacks began three months ago, Nour Beydoun, CARE’s regional advisor on protection and gender in emergencies, told Jezebel. The lack of supplies due to Israel’s ongoing blockade has resulted in pregnant women struggling to carry healthy pregnancies; higher risk of infection and death after giving birth or having c-sections; increased infant mortality; and a range of other deadly sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Beydoun told Jezebel that CARE has heard about “significant weight loss” among pregnant women “due to the limited access to food, to proper nutrition,” resulting in “poor personal health and also in poor fetal and newborn health.” Ammal Awadallah, executive director of the Palestinian Family Planning & Protection Association, told Jezebel that “all pregnant women are now at severe risk of delivering in unsafe conditions, being put in situations where they are giving birth in cars, tents, and shelters.” At health centers, pregnant women are only admitted “when fully dilated and are dismissed within a few hours after giving birth, due to the overcrowded facilities and extremely limited resources.” On top of all this, Beydoun said that many women must make the journey to hospitals or health centers—where they could still be turned away due to lack of capacity—on foot. Due to limited resources, Awadallah says many c-sections and births “are being performed without basic medical supplies, or anesthesia and without any postnatal care.” Few are able to get or attend appointments with their doctors after giving birth, and many “have no option other than to stay in the overcrowded shelters.” As a result, a lot of “women are being dangerously exposed to infections,” the the risk of maternal mortality is high: “There’s now so much risk of hemorrhaging and infections without the right tools and medicines,” Beydoun said. And the many women forced to undergo emergency c-sections also face cesarean wound infections due to lack of clean medical tools for the procedure.

Miscarriages in Gaza Have Increased 300% Under Israeli Bombing
**And these deaths aren't included in the running count of Palestinians killed**
At Al-Emirati Hospital in Rafah, a woman identified by Doctors Without Borders as Maha sought a delivery room as she began going into labor, but was denied: “All the delivery rooms were full,” an emergency coordinator working with the humanitarian group recounted in a news release published Wednesday. Maha “knew something wasn’t right,” and that she needed care. But without other options, she returned to her tent. Her newborn son died as she gave birth to him in the bathroom near her tent. “Without this war, she would not have lost her son,” the emergency coordinator wrote.
Beydoun told Jezebel that CARE has heard about “significant weight loss” among pregnant women “due to the limited access to food, to proper nutrition,” resulting in “poor personal health and also in poor fetal and newborn health.”
Ammal Awadallah, executive director of the Palestinian Family Planning & Protection Association, told Jezebel that “all pregnant women are now at severe risk of delivering in unsafe conditions, being put in situations where they are giving birth in cars, tents, and shelters.” At health centers, pregnant women are only admitted “when fully dilated and are dismissed within a few hours after giving birth, due to the overcrowded facilities and extremely limited resources.” On top of all this, Beydoun said that many women must make the journey to hospitals or health centers—where they could still be turned away due to lack of capacity—on foot.
These conditions are similarly dangerous for newborns, who are “dying from a lack of sterile environment and specialized staff,” Beydoun said.
Of course, this is all assuming that pregnant women are able to be admitted into hospitals at all, where “priority is often not for women going into labor” and beds are rarely available for them, Awadallah said. The conditions at the Al-Emirati field hospital in Rafah demonstrate how overworked hospitals in Gaza have become: Beydoun said the hospital was “initially designed to receive 30 to 40 outpatient consultations from pregnant women on a daily basis—now they handle 300 to 400 cases daily.” The hospital has just one operating room and is “designed to have two to three c-section deliveries per day—now they’re delivering 20 daily.”
In October, it was estimated that at least 50,000 women in Gaza were pregnant. The International Planned Parenthood Federation reported at the time that more women were miscarrying or going into early labor from shock and stress under bombardment. And it’s not yet clear how many of those thousands of pregnant women in Gaza are among the estimated 24,000 Palestinians who have been killed in Israel’s attacks, or among the thousands who remain missing. In its charge of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice, South Africa alleges that “two mothers are estimated to be killed every hour in Gaza.” (The Israeli death toll from Hamas attacks on October 7 stands at 1,139. Hamas continues to hold roughly 200 people hostage.)
After months of Israeli bombardment, the health care system in Gaza is “completely collapsing,” Doctors Without Borders warned last month. A CNN investigation published on January 12 found at least 20 of 22 hospitals in northern Gaza had been damaged or destroyed in the first two months of Israel’s war on Gaza, and 14 were directly attacked by Israeli forces. The World Health Organization reported in December that no “functional” hospitals remained in northern Gaza, and only nine out of 36 hospitals in the south were even partially functioning to serve Gaza’s population of 2 million. On Tuesday evening, journalists in Gaza reported that Israeli forces had closed in on and were attacking Nasser Hospital.
Birth complications are just one threat people who menstruate are facing: As the independent Gaza-based journalist Bisan Owda highlighted earlier this month, period supplies are nearly impossible to find. According to Awadallah, few people “can find a pharmacy nearby,” let alone one that still stocks sanitary products. Many are forced to use strips of cloth that they can’t wash due to lack of water, plastic bags in lieu of pads, or, “if they’re lucky enough,” cut-up baby diapers. One hospital worker told Owda that “each day” she encounters “numerous instances of fever directly linked to vaginal yeast infections, arising from inadequate hygiene and the absence of feminine products.” Another told her that the “scarcity of basic products results in more hospital visits, longer hospital stays, and worsened conditions” from infection and disease. Severe water shortages and overcrowded public bathrooms further contribute to “the high number of reproductive and urinary tract infections,” Awadallah said.
On top of that, due to “the suffering, anxiety, and deteriorating psychological status of the women in the [Gaza] Strip,” Awadallah said a large proportion are now “getting their period a number of times during the month” instead of once.
This lack of water and malnutrition as a result of Israel’s blockade have been especially detrimental for nursing mothers: Women are struggling to breastfeed their babies as they aren’t able to produce milk “without having water to drink nor sufficient food to eat,” Awadallah said. In a letter provided by CARE, Alaa, a mother in Gaza, wrote that “no one is eating enough,” and “it is usually the mothers who eat last” in order to feed their children first. “I slept on an empty stomach every night so my children wouldn’t go hungry,” Alaa wrote. Back in October, Al-Aqsa Hospital told the Associated Press that many mothers in Gaza were forced to mix baby formula with contaminated water, “[contributing] to the rise in critical cases” in the hospital’s neonatal ward.
Barriers to basic health care and resources aren’t new for the women and girls of Gaza, Awadallah told Jezebel: “Palestinian women and girls were already living in a severely vulnerable environment, in an area which has been blockaded from essential basic health services and products for more than a decade.” But the crisis has become more dire than ever, and “without a full and immediate ceasefire, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid across all parts of Gaza, maternal and neonatal deaths will continue to rise.”

what major does harmony study in college? did she have idea of what she was as a career path? would she choose something different if given the chance?
In her main verse, Harmony studies nursing. In the US, it would be a Bachelor in nursing (BSN) degree or a registered nurse to BSN degree program. She would do equivalent programs in verses where she is outside the United States.
After that, Harmony would continue to study to be a certified nurse midwife or CNM, which is about a master degree level in nursing. This would allow Harmony to oversee patients throughout their lives, no just for prenatal, births, and postnatal care. She would be able to oversee low-risk births for people who want to do it at home or in an environment with little medical intervention but can deliver high-risk births under the supervision of an obstetrician. It also gives her right to prescribe birth control for patients who request it, and help with menopause care and aging.
Harmony chose to be a CMN or nurse-midwife because birth was a normal thing for her. In the Black Hawk Reservation, it was a rural community far from the cities. After the Indian Health Service (IHS) clinic closed down, the closest hospital for the people was over an hour away. It is difficult to go there during the long winters when the harsh blizzards occur in Montana. Harmony was born at home since her mother was low-risk for complications. When Harmony was a child, she helped her mother and other female relatives when a birth happened in her family. It started as helping deliver water and herbs for adults to heat and deliver to the room where the birth is taking place. As she got older, Harmony would be more involved in helping with the process. This is because births are not only a medical condition but a ceremony. It is welcoming a new life into the world which needs careful preparation.
After the birth, the baby and their mother would go into the car with relatives to drive to the city for medical checkups. If things go wrong, her family has plans to take action to be sure everyone safely get medical attention.
Harmony wants to learn the skills of being a nurse midwife so she can help people have the best prenatal care and safe birth in respect to their culture and the resources available to them. Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. It should be patient-centered and prioritize the safety and well-being of patients.
She also wants to introduce other forms of medicine like for the mind, heart, and spirit. She and her people respect modern medicine like many Indigenous people do. It's just they want traditional knowledge and ceremony to work with medicine.
Harmony is a healer at heart and wants to help people heal. But there are other choices that she may consider, and there are AUs with these other career choices.
In other verses, Harmony may be a primary care nurse or physician's assistant. Both positions are always needed. I also have verses with Harmony as a police officer. Though, Harmony may have interest in being a park ranger since she has a love for nature and wants to help protect it.

Role of a Pregnancy and Maternity Specialist
A pregnancy and maternity specialist, often an experienced obstetrician and gynecologist, provides comprehensive care from conception to childbirth. Their responsibilities include regular prenatal check-ups, monitoring the health of both the mother and baby, managing any pregnancy-related complications, and ensuring a safe delivery.
Pregnancy specialists in Jaipur focus on all stages of maternity care:

These visits include ultrasounds, blood tests, and screenings to track the baby’s development and the mother’s health. The specialist provides nutritional advice, manages common pregnancy symptoms, and offers emotional support during this time.
High-Risk Pregnancy Management: Some pregnancies are categorized as high-risk due to factors such as maternal age, pre-existing health conditions, or complications like gestational diabetes, hypertension, or multiple pregnancies. A specialized maternity expert is crucial for managing such cases and ensuring that both mother and baby remain healthy.
Labor and Delivery: Maternity specialists are skilled in managing both normal and complicated deliveries, including Cesarean sections. They guide the mother through labor, ensuring pain management, and providing medical intervention when necessary.
Postnatal Care: Even after childbirth, the care doesn’t stop. Postnatal visits ensure that the mother recovers well from delivery and that the newborn is healthy and thriving. The specialist monitors the mother’s physical and emotional well-being, helping her adjust to the postpartum phase.

How a Postnatal Retreat Helped Me Transition Into Motherhood
I have now been a mom for a little over a year - and looking back at my journey, the best decision I made for my mental health was going to a postpartum care center. Heading into my third trimester, I was scared. I didn't know what to expect in the delivery room, so I spent hours researching the labor process - what did contractions feel like and how would I get through them? While poring over baby blogs, I also kept reading about postpartum depression and baby blues and became worried about what life would be like after giving birth. I had family living nearby and was grateful that I knew I'd be able to lean on them for support, but that alone didn't ease my anxiety. Then I was introduced to Boram. Founded in 2022, Boram is a postnatal retreat designed to help new parents build a strong postpartum foundation by offering coaching sessions on topics like infant soothing, swaddling, coping with postpartum depression or anxiety, and newborn feeding (whether that's formula or breast milk). At the heart of Boram's mission is the belief that parents deserve rest, care, and support after welcoming their new baby. Prioritizing rest for new moms is popular in Asian cultures, and I was excited that finally a place like this existed in New York City. So, I reached out to Boram in November, just as I was about to enter my third trimester, about arranging a retreat. (Rates for overnight retreats vary by length of time spent at the clinic: a three-night stay starts at $1,050 per night, while a seven-night stay starts at $950 per night. Boram covered the costs of my weeklong stay.) The folks at Boram advised that I would go straight to the care center from the hospital after being discharged. That way, I could gain maximum support with recovery and receive round-the-clock care for my baby. I agreed and that was the plan. But as we all know, sometimes plans fall through. My First Days as a New Mom My birth experience was far from what I had planned and envisioned. Two minutes after my newborn son was placed on my chest for skin-to-skin contact, the nurses swept him away again. He was experiencing health complications and needed more examinations. All I remember was a rush of doctors and nurses barging in while I was in the middle of delivering my placenta. This was not what I thought my introduction to motherhood would look like. As I stared at the bright hospital lights and heard loud monitor sounds, I felt nauseous and hot. I spiked a fever. It felt like I was having an out-of-body experience, like I was watching myself in the hospital and also watching the doctors tend to my baby. Instead of checking in at Boram, my son and I were transferred to another hospital, where he stayed in the NICU for 10 days. People don't talk enough about the fourth trimester and what happens to a woman's body and mind after giving birth. As we birth a baby, we also experience a rebirth in our own way. I struggled with conflicting feelings and postpartum rage: how could I feel so grateful and happy with this new love in my life, yet feel anxious, alone, and overwhelmed with this new identity and life? I felt lost and cried almost every day. Little did I know, help was around the corner. What It's Like to Stay at a Postpartum Retreat Center When my partner and I arrived at Boram, we were immediately greeted with warmth. The team all had smiles and brought me straight to my suite, a spacious, quiet room with a king-size bed and huge windows overlooking Midtown. Amna Nawaz:A recent study found a disturbing rise in the number of deaths among pregnant women and new mothers during the pandemic, and not just because of complications from pregnancy and childbirth. The report by "The Journal of the American Medical Association" found that, from 2019 to 2020, there were 4,535 deaths among pregnant women and new mothers. That was up from 1,588 deaths pre-pandemic. Native American women faced the greatest risk by far during this period. They were three-and-a-half times more likely to die than white women. To better understand what's driving this increase, I recently spoke with Jessica Whitehawk, the founder of the Ttawaxt Birth Justice Center on the Yakama Nation Reservation in Washington state.Jessica Whitehawk, welcome to the "NewsHour." And thank you for joining us.Let's just begin with, knowing what about maternal care for Native women going into the pandemic, did you expect to see these kinds of increases?Jessica Whitehawk, President and Founder, Ttawaxt Birth Justice Center: Yes, when we went into the pandemic, our team knew that there was going to be a lot of issues that were going to be revealed and intensified. But we didn't quite understand until it started — until we started seeing it now, what it actually was going to be. But we did anticipate it, yes.
Amna Nawaz:Tell me why. Why did you anticipate that increase going in?
Jessica Whitehawk:For many years, and, historically, we have had really high infant and maternal mortality rates. And as public health crisis such as a pandemic happens, we know that, in general, that the populations that are already struggling were going to struggle even more. And so that's — that was a fear that we had when the pandemic began.
Amna Nawaz:So tell us about those struggles. What does prenatal and postnatal care look like for most of the women that you serve?
Jessica Whitehawk:For most of the women that we serve, they are experiencing health care through federally qualified health care systems, which have very limited office visit time, and the care that's provided is subpar.During a prenatal visit, they often only have three to seven minutes per visit, which isn't enough time to be able to ask questions and understand what's going on with your body or even for a doctor to understand what complications or what additional things are needed beyond prenatal care.
Amna Nawaz:And, Jessica, I found it interesting, in the report, they found pregnant and recently pregnant Black women also faced an increased risk. Their odds of death were double those of white women in this period they were looking at.When you look back to the pandemic, it really laid bare a lot of the structural racism that exists in our health care system. Did you see that among the population of Native women you serve as well?
Jessica Whitehawk:Absolutely. There was structural racism there before. And, as the pandemic began, it really opened those cracks in a way that revealed numbers that cannot be ignored.
Amna Nawaz:We know pregnancy is a time of enormous stress on the body. But there were all these other causes of death not linked to pregnancy or complications from that itself, Native women five times as likely to die in car accidents during or after the pregnancy, three times as likely to die of drug overdoses or homicide, four times as likely to die by suicide. In your role trying to support these women, where do you even begin? How do you address all this?
Jessica Whitehawk:A lot of the reasons why this is happening is very historical.Violence against Native American women has taken place since the inception of America. This has not changed over time.We still have very high missing and murdered indigenous people rates. We are in — still in a battle with this type of violence. What our organization does and what we believe are the values is that, when you rebuild community and support for each other and start getting access to high-quality care, support through other women, support through culture, support through language and rebuilding our nationhood, that that's the way that we want to address all of these numbers and the things that we're seeing.
Amna Nawaz:Jessica, as you know, maternal health is really a mix of social factors, economic factors, a lot of things. But it's widely seen as a key indicator in overall social well-being. When you look at these latest numbers, what does that say to you about that?
Jessica Whitehawk:It's scary.I feel — I feel that this is — it is absolutely our life givers are the people that determine the foundation for our future. As we continue to build these systems that are grounded in community and continue to support through culture and healing, that these numbers will improve. But this is going to take a long time to fix. It's taken a long time to get here, and it's going to take a lot of work and a long time to fix.
Amna Nawaz:That is Jessica Whitehawk of the Ttawaxt Birth Justice Center in Washington state.Jessica, thank you for your time.
Jessica Whitehawk:Thank you.
