LOW LIBIDO AND POSTPARTUM Having a low libido or no libido post pregnancy is very common. Not to worry….you will, but if you struggle with it, here are some other factors possibly contributing. Psychological stress: A new baby in the house is an incredible gift, but it can also be extremely stressful. There is a helpless child in need of your attention ‪24/7‬ and you are hopelessly devoted to this child’s wellbeing, leaving very little for your self- care and nurturing. Your body has changed, you’re not sleeping, you’re barely eating and at times you may feel very overwhelmed, none of which leave you feeling sexy or wanting sex. In addition, the chronic stress associated with pregnancy can lead to elevated stress hormones. When stress hormones go up, any sex hormones will go down = decreased libido. Low progesterone: During pregnancy, progesterone is produced at a high rate. However, progesterone drops off almost immediately after delivering the placenta while prolactin remains increased. Your ovaries will not start creating progesterone again until your first menstrual cycle, which may create a temporary imbalance. Elevated prolactin levels: In new moms, breast feeding or not, prolactin will be elevated. Why? Its a hormone that plays a role in milk production, but also when elevated, it will decrease libido and slow down your thyroid. Thyroid issues: From psychological stress, the hormone fluctuations of pregnancy, low progesterone, high prolactin and more, your thyroid conversion will 100% be affected. NO this does not mean you are hypothyroid, nor does it mean you will require medication. What you are going through is a natural evolution of pregnancy, giving birth and coming back into balance. The key to recovering balance is to support your body with the energy it needs to sustain this enormous shift in the demand on your physical and mental energy. By regulating blood sugar you control the stress on the system by provide the body the energy it needs to support the demand on both the adrenal and thyroid glands, thus reducing inflammation and recovering balance in the system. #thyroidhealth #postpartumstress #lowlibido #lowlibidoinwomen #postpartumsex https://www.instagram.com/p/BzOBZ77AmKL/?igshid=5ur9uegl2h3h

Posted @withrepost • @mombrain.therapist We aren’t talking enough about postpartum mental health and we definitely aren’t talking enough about postpartum-PTSD. . P-PTSD is the emotional response to a real or perceived traumatic event during pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum and @postpartumstress estimates that approximately 9% of new mothers meet the diagnostic criteria for P-PTSD. . Potential risk factors? 📍Premature delivery, baby taken to NICU 📍Stillbirth 📍Birth injury for mother or baby 📍Unexpected events or complications during childbirth such as an unplanned c-section, hospital transfer or long labor. 📍History of fertility treatment. 📍Feelings of powerlessness or miscommunication during pregnancy or labor. 📍History of previous trauma such as sexual abuse, childhood abuse, domestic violence, traumatic injury. . . Symptoms? 🗣Intrusive memories of the traumatic event. 🥺Anxiety or panic attacks 😴Nightmares or flashbacks 🛑 Avoidance of trauma triggers (thoughts, memories, pictures, smells, places, etc) ⚡️Heightened sense of arousal (feeling “on edge”, difficulty sleeping, hyper vigilance). 👤Feeling emotionally numb or detached from daily life. . . Treatment? This is a treatable condition, if you think you might be experiencing these symptoms please speak with your providers or contact the @postpartumstress help line (call or text) for assistance in finding the help you need close to home. . .
