If Kabru gets to be naked then so does Kuro, equality for all 🔥Not to break the mystique but in that intro comic Kuro isn't flexing he's just pushing Mickbell away bc he about to be in business mode gdbdg. Was weird trying to make Kuro look more demony, did not work very well except for making him buffer but hey...! A black dog demon yeah yeah yeah...!

I have accidentally recreated Howl's Moving Castle... NOW HEAR ME OUT- The base concept for my satyr Kabru AU (the initial idea was the sketch where he has no horns haha) now turned demon AU was materializing Kabru's fear of anything monster, particularly his insecurity as a kid of being an incubus('s child and that making him a monster), and helping him work through it so he can love himself and others and the world better, but everything started clicking only after thinking about Kuro's role in the setting more. He's this feared dude with a witchy reputation and a lil rhyme about how everyone should stay away from him for their own sake etc etc, but he's not a demon just a dog dude really. The setting in this AU is much like Dunmeshi, but all monsters are called "demons" instead and tied with this concept of demonic not just monstrous, there's special generalized fear in them being kinda fundamentally evil. But they're just beasts, and sometimes just demihuman races, like Kuro. Magic does exist though, and curses, and yeah just a folk kinda vibe!

Kabru because he's become supernatural knows how to speak Kuro's tongue now too, or maybe he's always known it idk... But Kabru sought Kuro out because he's The demon guy around, thought if anyone around would know how to do anything about his having become a monster it'd be him- Mickbell is there too ig like waaa this innocent-looking (def isn't) human loves this demon and lives with him, alone but peaceful as hermits in the woods? Wah wild. Wah we can still have love?? Wah we can fall in love together and live happy monster lives even if ostracized??! Wah wait I'm not even a monster it was just my own latent magical powers cursing myself because I worried and believed myself to be a demon so intensely for so long?!! Wah we can truly have it all...... Growth feels so nice. Except Mickbell, that grown ass man is not finding inner peace yet. Still he's chill here since he's a side char not a main one

It's how Kuro's confident in himself despite everything being stacked against him, it's how he still trusts and likes himself, it's how he just wants a simple happy life and pursues what he wants, it's how he takes things simply... Self-critical Kabru always neglecting himself over obsessing about the greater good could learn from him........ Kuro is the only one after his transformation that unconditionally welcomes him and shows him compassion and it's all so confusing to him, especially since at first Kabru wouldn't even offer that same humanization to Kuro, only risked it out of necessity for his own circumstances, but he gradually becomes able to see the humanity in him despite his appearance, mannerisms, way of life and ideals, until he sees the humanity in him and himself too despite their appearances, until he finds there's nothing wrong in this routine and life of theirs in this isolated magical little place, until........... Just about accepting all of those fuzzy inbetween ways to be that are unclean and hard to understand from the outside, and growing comfortable in them and loving himself and kuro and the life they've made together.......!!!!!! What if through humanizing you I humanized myself... What if through growing a understanding for each other wevalidated ourselves, love as self-love...

I love including Rin into things, for a more plotty story it'd be neat if she tried and followed Kabru... He up and disappeared and she's a capable mage and she doesn't know what his plan was because he never tells her anything so she goes out and pursues him- Could even be the main antagonist besides just idk self-hate and townspeople lol, like she thinks Kuro is keeping him prisoner or something and also because she kinda represents the same kinda social trauma Kabru has, where she's strict about conforming and being an irreproachable undeniable human so she kind of wants to drag him back to that state he was in of anxiety over acting and being human enough...... But of course in the ultimate confrontation when she has her staff pointed at Kuro and they talk, she's hurt by him not confiding in her and thinking of her as someone who wouldn't help, but she understands and stops and yay happy ending :> And if we want them to be in this Holm and Dia may be allies I feel 🤔Like maybe they help out Kabru when they see him, help him escape their human village at one point or something, Holm is quite nice and cares for spirits and Dia's fled her home too so they kinda get it in a way, it'd contrast Rin... This isn't about the Laios party lol. Rin & Mickbell shenanigans would lowkey be fun like maybe Mickbell tricks Rin into thinking Kabru IS there against his will so she can take him away and the status quo of Mickbell not having to share Kuro with anyone is preserved, or maybe they just shittalk and grumble together. Gbdgd this is a plotline about accepting change and these two are noooot happy about it

So yeah he hates being a monster that's the schtick!! Won't a cool dog man pleaseeee turn me human again. Surely he can do that right. So he goes to live with this feared coolass magicky guy and that guy's little guy at his weird home and through making connections and self-love the curse you actually unknowingly put on yourself gradually lessens and disappears, but you don't care anymore because that's the point 😌 Which is why I call it a Howl's Moving Castle recolor gdbd

Kabru is usually the voice of reason within kurokabu so it's really fun switching the roles in that way. If you're just stumbling into this and are sooo confused first of all congrats on getting so far second I can't overstate how unironic this is + if you want more explanation about the ship I made a brainstormy manifesto here <3 Like, did you know Kuro's name is actually Yodan? He was likely called Kuro by Mickbell due to the language barrier. In this AU it's because no one's interested in him as a person so people just give him an ominous title that means black. But Kabru learning his name and Kuro willingly giving away that information and Kabru feeling the weight of it because he really thinks this'd allow him to control him (he can't actually control bc he's not a demon! No one's a demon yay! Just weirdo humans who get otherized)......

I’m one of seven cousins of John’s generation… Holidays in Edinburgh were fairly normal, though the funniest thing was when John came up on holiday to the north of Scotland, where Mater’s - we called Aunt Elizabeth “Mater” - husband’s family home was located. David and I used to go up there regularly during the summer, helping Uncle Bert with doing repairs and maintenance to the house and outbuildings and cutting hay and digging potatoes - anything he gave us to do. We did that for three weeks of our four-week holiday, and on the fourth week he gave us some time off to go fishing or to the beach. On one occasion, John joined in this trip, and he hated it, because the man was not put on Earth to do manual work - a mark of his being an artist, I guess - and being asked to fetch and carry and dig and cut and cement and do brickwork for three weeks was just absolute hell on earth for him. It was quite funny, really, he had to join in but not with any enthusiasm or dedication - I think it was a nightmare for the poor lad.

The good side of it though, was that most evenings we used to go up a hill just behind the house to visit a friend of the family, and they had a wind-up gramophone. John quite enjoyed that, even though the music was mainly Jimmy Shand and his band, a Scottish group playing traditional Scottish music. Still, it was music.

I'm doing this with Nera and Illario in mind. I may do it again with Nera and Elek sometime but their relationship is more chill. Not saying it'd be less interesting or anything, it's just that Elek isn't as much of a mess as Illario can be.

I'm going to be pairing up a couple of tropes with these because of overlap and because the one trope alone doesn't do enough to capture the Vibe. And, some of these are not "official" tropes, so to speak, but if you look in your heart, you'll know them to be true.

Really Gets Around/Ethical Slut: Nera and Illario both are not shy about sexual encounters. The "whys" are different but the end result is the same: they're both well-acquainted with casual sex. Nera's reasons are more borne from practicalities. She spends a lot of time traveling and she's not one to bed her colleagues and she's not generally interested in being tied to one person, long-distance or not, so that rules out a lot of options. As a result, she tends to fall into bed with people in the various places she passes through.

Some of those partners become regulars.

When Illario and Nera first meet, it's in a bar/tavern in Treviso. They hit it off in part because it's clear they want the same thing that night. Or, well, mostly the same thing. Nera was looking for a threesome that night but agrees to bed Illario after he takes up the challenge of leaving her the kind of mess she was wanting from the threesome. She's skeptical of his ability to deliver but he rises to the challenge, so to speak.

During their night together, Nera shows him a level of interest and care for his needs, though, that he's not expecting. Nera brings an earnestness and appreciation to her nocturnal activities that Illario's not used to. He expects people to try to get what they want and be done with it: enjoy it for what it is but ultimately be self-serving. And Nera doesn't vibe with that. If she's in bed with you, she wants to be present and, in a way, joyful. Illario is a bit smitten by the time they're sated, which leads to:

Friends with Benefits/The Many-Night Stand: It starts with a night together. By all accounts, it should have only been that one. But something lingers. Nera asks if she can let him know when she's next in town. Illario tells her how to do that, but expects they'll both go their separate ways and that will be that.

Then, months later, when she passes through town again, she reaches out to him and he shows up. They spend the evening together. This time, with more conversation before falling into bed. And it becomes the beginning of an unusual (for a Crow like Illario) friendship-type thing.

(I have more to say about this part but I'm having trouble putting it into words in a useful way but the distilled part is that Illario finds it easy to talk to Nera and since she doesn't press and that they don't talk about his job in any kind of depth, she gets to know the parts of him that aren't as tied up in Crow things and he's surprised -- and delighted-- that anyone gives a shit about the things he actually likes)

Relationship Labeling Problems/Long-Distance Relationship: This thing between them goes on for years. Their first time together happens at least five years before the start of Veilguard, and they see each other a handful of times a year. It's not a relationship in the traditional sense but it's not not a relationship of some type. Situationship is probably closest but that's not a term they probably would have for it.

If pressed, Illario would deflect. In fact, a few years in, when Lucanis picks up on the fact that Illario is seeing someone in some form with at least some frequency, Illario does exactly that. It's only much later, when the events of Veilguard are in motion, that Lucanis puts the pieces together and realizes that Nera is the person Illario's been Not Seeing the whole time.

Nera, though, is less fussed about labels in general and doesn't have such a fraught history of interpersonal relationships (I mean, she's not a maladapted Crow, so). "Does it have to fit in a well-defined box?" She'd respond, if asked. Illario is one of the men she likes to visit. He's fun. She doesn't really care what their relationship is, so long as she gets to see him when she's in Treviso.

Illario, by contrast, doesn't want to think about what they are and I don't think he'd know what to do with the answer if he did. Especially as time goes on. He gets a bit more mentally hot potato about the topic, the longer they're Definitely Not in a Long-Distance Thing.

Which leads to:

Ladykiller in Love/Unknowingly in Love: So, Nera realizes she cares a lot for Illario at some point. She's the more emotionally stable/mature of the two, so that's not surprising. It's also not surprising that she realizes that even if Illario feels similarly, he's probably going to freak out at least somewhat when he comes to that conclusion. As a result, Nera kind of just keeps on with what they've always done and decides that if he figures it out then great but she's not gonna press for anything.

Illario, though. Oh, honey.

During their many-year-long Not Relationship, they both were free to do whatever with other and so Illario did his usual: going out when he felt like it, taking people to bed when the mood struck, taking people to bed on contract (be it with marks or not), and so on. Nera wasn't going to mind any of that.

Did he look forward to seeing her, when he knew she would be coming through? Did he start planning more elaborate evenings for them, as the years went on? Did he pamper her and tend to her sweetly following their nights together?

If the answer to any of those is yes, that doesn't have to mean anything.

Did he break after she left to help her cousin chase an elven god, when she had no idea when or if she'd be able to see him again?

If the answer to that one is yes...it doesn't have to mean anything, right?

I Want My Beloved to be Fashionable: This one is a bit of a tonal whiplash after the previous one, but it develops later on in their Not Relationship and comes back full-force after they're reconciled during the events of Veilguard.

Illario likes nice things. He likes to look nice and wear nice things and be clean. It's a common headcanon that he has a multi-step routine for his skincare and hair.

This extends to his partner, at least between him and Nera. Nera is, as with a lot of things, pretty chill. She can dress up and look stunning but she doesn't always put in the extra effort. But she knows Illario likes it when she's dressed up. She also knows he likes to dress her up himself. And, since she both appreciates his skills and enjoys being fussed over by him, she lets him dress her up.

So they have a kind of intimate ritual some nights when they're going out where they'll bathe together then Illario will do her hair and makeup and have an outfit picked out for her. So he gets to fuss over her, make her beautiful, have her be appreciative of his skills and taste, then after their evening out, he gets to mess it all up and mark her in different ways, then pamper her and clean her again.

This whole sequence starts a few years after they meet, when Illario has a dress made for her for when she next visits. This is the moment when Nera realizes that Illario cares, but also realizes that Illario hasn't realized that it means Illario cares. Later, though, after things smooth out and they're Actually Together For Real, Illario coming to terms with his affection leads to this Dressing My Lover becoming one of his favorite things.

As such, it's not just "I want my beloved to look nice". It's that but it's also a ritual to express adoration and a ritual to receive and appreciate the love and skill of a loved one.

Anyway. That's them, in a nutshell. There are other tropes that apply at different points in their relationship, but those are the broad ones.

I just love them so much. I could (and have! and will again!!) talk about them for hours.

So, homeless Halt huh?

What, right after leaving Clonmel and bedore meeting Crowley, or a fully new context au style.

The first option, yes!!!

I decided that 17 was FAR too young for TEY, so I kinda just added 3 extra years in between leaving Clonmel and meeting Crowley, making him 20 at the time of TEY. (Well, technically, he was 19 when he met Crowley and turned 20 like 2 weeks later, but that's being unnecessarily detailed lol)

I like to think that, because Halt was a prince, Pritchard could only teach him the skills in isolation, and not how to use them. Y'know, like learning how to pick a lock on some little play toy you out in your lap, and then having to actually do it on a real door. So, these 3 years were when Halt had to transition from aiming at a target to aiming at an actual animal. There were also things like how he knew logically how to set up the tent and then realized that actually doing it was just different enough to make him feel dumb.

This also, btw, puts Halt as a homeless, jobless, (illegal) immigrant who speaks the language at a 3rd grade level during the height of Morgarath's rule. So. He had 🌈fun!! ✨️

By the time he met Crowley he understood the language a lot better (3 years of actually living in the kingdom will certainly help with that) but he still kinda struggled a bit. I like to think that he can't pronounce Morgarath's name and always ends up calling him "Morgor", "Morgaah", or simply, "lighting man". Why? Because it's entertaining, that's why

The fic I'm writing takes place when he had JUST moved to Araluen, and wasn't quite so stone faced yet. In the fic he finds a group of other homeless people, mostly other immigrants, who let him stay by their fire that night and help him fix a couple things from his saddle bag. It also centers heavily around his relationship with his old horse, Declan, from before he got Abelard, and how that horse was his only reliable source of companionship
