There’s a massive protective gear (especially masks) shortage in hospitals and clinics, so please...#StayHome and only go out if you really-really have to. And please, even if you don’t have symptoms, doesn’t mean “shit”...PLEASE practices SOCIAL DISTANCE and HAND WASHING and STAY AWAY FROM THE VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, ESPECIALLY THE AUTOIMMUNED AND PEOPLE OVER 50-60s.

Look, at the facts...learn from the mistakes and the successes of other countries.

Also, this virus also affects the young generations too, don’t be naive, BE SMART. Being a teenager or in their 20s or 30s...doesn’t make you invincible. But you can be responsible for everyone, including yourself and your love ones.

I’ve been thinking about ways to help. The call has gone out for more Personal Protective Equipment for health workers, even if it has to be home made by ordinary people. The important criteria for fabrics are 100% cotton and a tight weave, and I have a fitted sheet that‘s perfect! It got ruined in the wash a while ago, but big swathes of it are still intact. I’ve been saving it for a future sewing project, but it seems like its time is NOW - and I don’t have my sewing machine with me! If any of you can take it and turn it into masks, please message me and I will mail it to you ASAP. Let’s Rosie the Riveter this thing!

I’ve also been thinking about how important it is to stay out of medical system in any way you can, not just avoid getting covid-19. Treating you for injuries and other illnesses costs time and resources too! Obviously lots of things are unavoidable, but we can all be extra careful with our health and safety to stay out of healthcare workers’ way. One thing to do is make sure you’re eating well. If you (like me) love takeout and rarely cook at home, it can be tempting to stick to frozen stuff and easy dishes with lots of carbs during quarantine. But if we do that too long (and this might last a while!), we risk developing vitamin deficiencies and other conditions of malnutrition - landing us on a doctor’s to-do list! Now I’m no health nut, foodie, or ~lifestyle~ guru, but I have one solid rule of thumb: Just try to eat a vegetable every day, some fruit every day, and something with protein in it. By eating a healthy(ish) diet, we can all avoid wasting hospitals’ time with preventable maladies. (Plus, you’ll feel better!) Message me if you’re lost and want some EASY recipes I use.

Great Efforts Although I look forward to relaxation of social distancing standards and the reopening of some of our State parks, I wish I could say that I see great efforts being made to procure and produce and adequate stockpile of personal protective equipment for hospitals. Instead, I am hearing about hospital administrators relaxing PPE guidelines, telling nurses and doctors that they don’t have to wear N95 masks in rooms with positive Covid patients, unless they are undergoing aerosolizing procedures. This is absolutely outrageous and contrary to CDC guidelines. All masks bright and beautiful ... 

It’s been creative central at The ThreadShed over last few lockdown weeks. A dear key-worker friend put in a request for a supply of some face masks and sent me a fabulous free pattern from www.hellosewing.com. The snug fitting mask is made with two layers of tightly woven cotton and has a pocket between the layers to insert a filter (heppa paper or paper from hoover bags is a cheap option) if you want to. 
Currently there are some very mixed messages about the use of face masks and evidence wise not much to go on, although the widespread use of masks in Hong Kong is what is believed to have limited the spread. The general advice is not to touch your mask once it's on and to remove it for washing as soon as you get home. Right now some countries are making the public use of face masks mandatory (eg Austria, Slovakia, Bosnia) and some are now recommending the public wear them (USA). Only yesterday there was a lot of speculation that UK may soon follow suit. The World Health Organisation advice that face-masks are not necessary is now under review as the previous advice is believed to be at least partially aimed at ensuring that all vital PPE supplies are kept for use by health care workers. 
Whilst there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the public should leave surgical face masks for the healthcare settings I think snazzy jazzy home sewn masks are the next best thing, plus they look pretty gorgeous too.
