Sometimes I sing the Ashtanga closing prayer with a different melody which is the one I learned with the chanting teacher I had the very first time I travel to India. This mantra really connects me back with the quietness inside. Yesterday I was having a very agitated breathing during my practice and it was a clear reflection of my mind state into my breathing. My mind was on a very disturbed state and I allowed it to be and just observed. I think that the most difficult part about Saucha or cleanliness, is the cleanliness of the mind. When there is something disturbing my mind, it is so hard to let it go and create space, to stop thinking about it, because I get attached to the lecture I give to the situations. This is how we have been taught to behave, we have to be right, and when we consider others are "wrong" an it "affect" us, easily we get stuck on the victim zone. Fortunately, yoga path has so many practices that work as a mirror and make us realize how ridiculous and absurd it is to stay on that state of attachment with a thought or emotion. The cleanliness of the body is part of the Yoga practices. It is easy to keep our outer body clean, as we take showers, brush our teeth, wear clean clothes, but what about the inside body? What about the thoughts and feelings? What about the speech? In the Yoga Path, there is a method for purifying the inner body, called the ShatKarma or ShatKriya, which consists on 6 actions or practices to purify the systems, specially the digestive and respiratory system. The Shatkarmas prepare the body for a higher purification practice: Pranayamas (breathing techniques to regulate the energy of life that flows through the body and Universe), which as per Hatha Yoga Pradipika states on the second chapter, can eradicate all diseases, however improper practice can actually create diseases. I'm not going to talk more about the six practices or Pranayamas. But I would like to mention something even easier and accessible to all that we could practice to keep our body CLEAN: the FOOD we put into our body, the QUALITY of it and the AMOUNT of it. We forget very easy about how food affects our wellness, not only on how the physical body feels but also how the mind behaves. I believe the food we eat reflects even in our attitudes and emotions, and if we pay attention and connect with our faculty of listening to our body, we will be able to discern which foods are good for our body and which are not. I can't say there is a recipe for everybody, I can't say that there is one healthy way of eating for everybody, but definitely there is one heathy way of eating specific for you that only you can discover by listening to your body! Are you willing to apply what Yoga suggests us about our practices also in your eating habits? Are you willing to practice healthy eating habits for a long time, without break and with sincere devotion (refer to Yoga Sutra 1.14)?
