Things have been busy as I’m designing more promotional posters using Photoshop but I still get stuck into the #lifetimewarmup once a day. 170bpm is now my new “normal” and I am trying to consolidate this tempo. Each day I play through each section of the routine using a timer, for thirty seconds. This is inspired by the Endurance Challenge when Tommy would play each element for a minute. This has had the main benefit of strengthening my Paradiddles and Flam Paradiddles, but the whole routine benefits. Eventually I will aim for the full Endurance Challenge but for now, Thirty Seconds is plenty! #realfeelpads #practicedrums #practiceroutine #practiceroutines #practiceroutineformusicians #drums #drumming #technique #technicalpractice #rudiments #rudiment #flams #singlestrokes #doublestrokes #lifetimewarmup #tommyigoe #tommyigoegrooveessentials #tommyigoelifetimewarmingup #realfeelpad #realfeelpadsforlife #endurance #endurancelifetime (at Leicester, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDlvgtUnBRF/?igshid=1rn3wqc362aa3

#slowpractice under #performance conditions For #fastplaying passages I practice #undertempo with #tinybow strokes which have #stickysounds This prepares #qualitysound as the passage gets #fasterandfaster Here’s an example of a #practiceroutine I use and teach my #violinstudents learning J.B Accolay’s #violinconcerto in #aminor 5 videos: 1) Practice half measures with pauses. Include all #dynamics (don’t wait until the passage is learned to do the #crescendo and #decrescendo ~swipe left~ 2) Slightly faster. One measure at a time. ~swipe left~ 3) Slightly faster. No pauses. Don’t forget dynamics! ~swipe left~ 4) Slightly faster, still under tempo. Notice how the small sticky bows are starting to sound “normal” ~swipe left~ 5) Performance version. Notes are clear and brilliant as a result of training the small bow strokes. I feel in control of the bow. Dynamics sound natural and clear as a result of including them all along. Swipe back to video 1 and notice how I am using the same amount of bow at every speed! Note: Students may spend anywhere from a few minutes to several weeks on each stage as they learn other parts of the concerto. #violintechnique #violinpractice #practiceroom #practicemakesprogress #beautifulmusic #40hoursofpractice #loveviolin #violinteacher #violinclass #violinpedagogy @paoyi_2005 (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRBglt6ALCB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Practise Routine Week 3
This week for my technical exercises, I used metronomes to work on my timing and also doing scales using ‘goo’ and ‘foo’ like last week to carry on strengthening my voice and transition. Throughout the week I rehearsed a slow acoustic version of ‘Toxic’ by Melanie Martinez, however I also decided to practice ‘Lost Without You’ by Freda Riding. I practised these songs to an acoustic backing track but then decided I would like to accompany myself on guitar so learnt the chords via ultimateguitar. My practise routine for this week helped me to strengthen, get in time and smooth my transition from my head voice to my chest voice. I think the biggest challenge for me was the “Ba” exercises as I’m not used to using my chest voice at a higher range. One of my SMART targets for the week was to perform infront of family and friends which I did on Saturday to improve confidence.
One of the main things I’ve improved on in the last month would definitely be my confidence, I still get very nervous before performing but now once I start I feel okay and confident performing the song. Our band songs this week consisted of “Breathin” by Ariana Grande and “I Miss You” by Clean Bandit which I practise at home a cappella to make sure I’m using the right notes. In our band, we like to sit in a circle to discuss what instruments are where, who’s singing what bit and plan every aspect of the song to then perform and make changes.

Lifelong Musicianship: Reframing Practice Routines
Lifelong Musicianship: Reframing Practice Routines
As a music teacher, one of the most frequently asked questions of me is “how often and for how long should I (or my child) practice?” Invariably, my response to this is, “that depends on the goals of the student!” And by no means is that response cavalier. The truth is that the answer to this question varies dramatically from student to student. Age, musical taste and personality are just a…

I watched an interview with Tommy Aldridge yesterday (thanks to @global2dom) and was interested to hear the Whitesnake drummer talk about drummers needing to learn the fundamentals - Rudiments. I wish I had taken them more seriously as a kid but am glad since discovering @tommyigoe and @johnawooton to have addressed that over the last eight years or so. #realfeelpads #practicedrums #practiceroutine #practiceroutines #practiceroutineformusicians #drums #drumming #technique #technicalpractice #rudiments #rudiment #flams #singlestrokes #doublestrokes #lifetimewarmup #tommyigoe #tommyigoegrooveessentials #tommyigoelifetimewarmingup #realfeelpad #realfeelpadsforlife #grabandgo #grabandgolifetime (at Leicester, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC8fcFSnN3g/?igshid=1i2lcl0sueduk

Creative #scalepractice #violapractice I’m always exploring different ways to #practicescales Here’s an #arpeggios #practiceroutine in which I play each #arpeggio in one direction only and change alternating at the bottom and top. For this I play through all arpeggios in all keys. Each arpeggio is only performed in one direction so the next day I begin in the opposite direction Two videos: 1) Day one - arpeggio series starting at the bottom with C minor. Each arpeggio alternates. There are an odd number of arpeggios, so F minor begins at the top…B flat minor will begin at the bottom…etc. ~swipe left~ 2) Day two - start C minor at the top…F minor begins at the bottom, etc… #violateacher #stringpedagogy #violapower #violapower🎻 #violanation #violaworld #violalove #loveviola #playviola #violist #suzukiviola #violalessons #violalesson #bratscher #альт #violatechnique #galamianscaletechnique #violamasterclass #violaclass (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccz4qOdOKjw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
