Have you played PRAEDOR ?
By Ville Vuorela
Tumblr media
Based on a long-running series of comics originally published in Finnish roleplaying magazine Magus written by Petri Hiltunen, Praedor is a fantasy role-playing game set in the post-apocalyptic fantasy world of Jaconia as the titular Praedors, who are basically nothing but glorified scavengers going through the ruins of past civilizations.
Praedor uses a classless system that mostly utilizes six-sided dice and has a reputation for being grim and gritty in contrast with traditional fantasy RPGs. It has recently seen something of a revival, with multiple supplements and novelizations released between 2016 and 2023.

Looking for players for a praedor game
I bein wanting to run this game for a while
System/Name: Praedor
Timeframe: Whole week open
Timezone: Eastern Europe Experience: 8 years of TTRPG with few games as Game Master
Details: Looking for 4-5 players (2-4 slots open still) set in a world after cataclysmic event where the world almost came to end. however it was saved by group of immortal sorcerers creating Jaconia, 1325 mile long circular livable land these sorcerers ruled over mortals for centuries until they revolted among rogue sorcerers. After their victory mortals ruled themselves and the immortal sorcerers secluded themselves among themselves only offering their services on a occasion. Players will be taking a role of praedors adventurers who go beyond the border of jaconia into Borvaria the cursed city wild magic and nameless monsters. Praedors are seen as heroes by some and ill omen who bring curses and disease by others. Being a Praedors means you have turned your turned against society severing or denying your roots to that world. In borvaria everyone is equal for monsters and demons do not care for your titles, sex or whom you love. Most who start this life do not return and those who do return with riches and amazing tales of adventure inspiring future Praedors.(muokattu)

Look at this little beautiful boy! I had a pleasure to design the look of my friend's character for a campaign that she is in! It was a delight to hear what has happened to this man and how his adventures have gone in the harsh world of Jaconia. ^^

Drew my character that I'm playing in my friends Praedor campaign. Jarth here is a forest dwelling junkie who is does not care too much about things like manners or personal hygiene, but is pretty good with a bow and can cook up a scheme or two.
Overall pretty happy how this turned out.

Yeah, Praedor is definitely influenced by Stalker. The lands of Jaconia are all contained in a circle of about two thousand miles in diameter, and beyond it on all sides spreads the gigantic ruined megacity of Borvaria. Nobody knows what's beyond it, or if there even is an other side. (Borvaria was destroyed in a magical cataclysm caused by the overuse of portals and summoning spells, so it's possible the geometry of the world gets very degenerate the further you get from Jaconia.)
Semi-professional treasure hunters and adventurers, called praedors, go on expeditions into Borvaria in search of treasures both magical and mundane. There are plenty of adventures possible in the civilized, and not-so-civilized, lands of Jaconia, too.
The setting is originally the brainchild of the Finnish comic artist Petri Hiltunen, who has made several comics set in it, and provided illustrations for the game. This gives Praedor a distinct look, and it's one of the better-illustrated RPGs around, especially for such a small company!

If anyone's interested, here's the official webpage:
It's mostly in Finnish, but there are English-language entries in the blog section and elsewhere.
I don't have anything to ask about d&d being gay, I was just seeing a lot of people asking questions and felt left out.
So I'll ask a completely unrelated question, does Finland have any iconic or foundational ttrpgs the way Germany has The Dark Eye that anybody and everybody in the scene there has either played or knows about?
I don't think it's quite as prolific as Das Schwarze Auge/The Dark Eye is in Germany, but Praedor is a pretty well-known Finnish fantasy RPG! As far as I have understood it is basically a dark fantasy dungeon crawler which is all about the player characters being a group of looters and scavengers going through ancient ruins in search of treasure. Apparently there is also something of a post-apocalyptic vibe to it, so based on vibes alone it seems almost like a mix of D&D and STALKER? It's also decidedly grittier and lower-powered than D&D.
I haven't read it personally but it's on my list of games to get, because it is seriously a part of Finnish RPG history!

I was trying to design a daughter of Neptune for my au (the currently unnamed one with Ash Tornin) when I came to the realization that she was looking a lot like Ana Dakkar from Daughter of the Deep.
Ana is the demigod daughter of Neptune and a descendant of Salacia (the Roman goddess of the sea). She was raised in San Alejandro, California (a beach town just north of Santa Barbara) with her stepfather (a son of Mars) and older half-brother, Dev. When Dev turned 13, he left to train and join the Legion up north.
While her parents had already served their ten years, they were summoned by the gods on a quest to retrieve the Golden Eagle. They both died on this quest. With nowhere else to go (and heading off soon anyways), a twelve year old Ana made her way northward. Several months later, she would join the 5th cohort on account of a lack of combat skill and her father being generally seen as less important.
When he was 17 (the same year Ana would finally arrive at New Rome), Dev was elected praedor. Little did anyone know; he was a traitor working for Saturn and the Titans. He would die two years later in the final battle on Mount Othrys, where Jason would supersede him.
While Ana isn't the best when it comes to combat, she is an excellent tracker, scout, seaman, and communicator. She is able to speak several languages including (but not limited to) English, Latin, and Bundeli, as well as knowing sign language.
Powers wise, she is an incredible swimmer, can breathe underwater, and understand with sea creatures. Hypothetically, she can also generate earthquakes but is reluctant to do so due to the abundance of fault lines in California. She's only tried it once and is.... unwilling to do so again.

"Gerda is a tall, muscular woman with 40kg of armor. She does not climb, swim, or sneak quietly.
But she can survive getting rolled over by a mollusc monster the size of a (small) hill."
I loved my one-shot tabletop rpg character. She's close to a few of my story characters, so her spirit can continue on in them.

A couple of years ago Finland got a translation of D&D with an original spin that to my knowledge draws a bit from Finnish folklore. That has been a pretty big deal, since a lot of ttrpgs aren't really translated into Finnish.
We have a strong-ish local ttrpg dev scene too I think. Finland is a pretty small country, so there are only two or three important scene events during the year, so it's very easy to meet with other devs and swap ideas.
Some of the more well known Finnish ttrpgs are Praedor, Astraterra, Sotakarjut, and Myrskyn sankarit – so pretty classic fantasy and scifi. They are fairly popular from what I've seen, but if I had to guess D&D or its Finnish translation Legendoja ja Lohikäärmeitä (Legends and Dragons) are the most popular games here. The usual suspects like Call of Cthulhu and BitD are definitely also popular tho. But I think as a community we are very proud of our local stuff.
A fun tidbit though! Between december 2021 and december 2024 our public broadcasting company Yle produced some actual play oneshots with Finnish celebrities. It was called Ropelive (rope being shortened version of roolipeli = role-playing game, and live being, well, live) and it ran for I think seven or so oneshots before Yle shut it down because of a bunch of budget cuts. Iirc they used a super simple d6 homebrew system. It wasn't really my thing, but I think it's super cool for a tax-funded public company to have given it a whirl!
So here's a thing I'm curious about: What's the TTRPG situation like in non English speaking counties? I've only heard a few tidbits here and there like Call of Cthulhu being the biggest thing in Japan or China not really having much of a market for collaborative storytelling games, but that's all secondhand information.
Anyone want to share their experience?
