YU-GI-OH “Historical” Headcannon

Hello, it's been quite some time. But finally, I took time to finish this draft!

Small necessary disclaimers :

⚠️ Excuse my english, I'm not native.

⚠️ It's hard to find the balance between historical and fun to write. So somethings I might have said in my previous post won't technically matter here.

General

Atem

His mother died during childbirth. That would explain the absence of brother and sister.

He had a nurse, potentially Maana's mother since it was said they knew each other since childhood.

Aside from that he had a pretty lonely childhood, he is the future pharaoh, a god among the humans. So every relationship starts with a massive imbalance.

He lacked connection with people basically. (Except Mahad and Maana)

Pharoh used to be disconnected from their people, they were symbols before humans

He had and still has an issue with eye contact. Either he doesn't look at people at all or just fixes someone intensely. No in-between.

Young Atem couldn’t stay put unless someone was brushing his hair.

Even older he has a very soft spot and liking when he gets pampered. He loves long baths or when someone does his make-up or again brushing his hair.

Atem has no issues with nudity, again the clothes were very reviling,

Atem might be anxious when completely alone. He’s so used to being with all his servants, advisers etc. ect that when the silence finally arrives and his alone in his bed he tends to feel weird.

He adores cats. But, he used to be a bit too enthusiastic and a cat scratched him and since then he let them come to him but never engaged with them.

Atem would pass hours at the temple, and his surroundings would think of him as a very pious man, but it was for the cats AND for Priest Seto.

Priest Seto

Priest Seto has the longest and lushiest (?) hair known to exist.

He loves cats and cats love him back.

Priest Seto knows his eyeliner, he does it in the first stroke and it’s always perfect

Child Seto because of his blue eyes was looked at a lot, not in a bad way but more like he was unusual looking.

Seto’s eyes allowed him to be noticed by priests as a “Child of the Gods” since some shades of blue seem to be linked to the sky and the divine in ancient Egypt.

Seto loves to read, and temples were known to be filled with a lot of scriptures.

Seto is more in touch with the people than Atem, since priests were also magicians and doctors

Priest Seto is so loyal to the Pharaoh not only because Atem is the heir of the gods he worships but also because younger they both used to pet the temple’s cat.

Priest Seto is good at what Atem doesn’t like to deal with. That’s why even tho he’s young his one of Atem’s favourite ministers.

Seto likes to walk alone at night under the stars.

Relationship Headcannons (I know you were looking for it)

But how do we end up in a relationship with those two cuties, and still be accurate historically ?? Well, my friend here is what I could think of.

Atem :

To be 1st wife material, sadly you’ll have to from the family OR a very very influential heir/heiress of a nobleman.

If you’re not 1st wife material > You’ll have to be part of his harem as either: a skilled person or maybe an heiress of an enemy tribe who has been vanquished or is in alliance.

Wait let me explain, Harem in ancient Egypt isn’t what we commonly think. The pharaoh’s harem was, surely to entertain the Pharaoh but also to showcase skill and the Egyptian culture in a way.

So we can imagine here so very skilled shadow game players or very beautiful dancers etc.

Seto :

Find no source to say that priest took a celibacy oath so you can imagine anything you want.

(Personally, I have my small fantasy of forbidden love between him and an OC priestess because I love drama)

Guuuh I wish my brain could cobble together a coherent idea beyond, "these cards look very suspiciously like Seth/Set/Seto" for an AU.

I mean, I have too many other AUs to work on as it is. But the taunting sirencall of another possible one lurking in the void is right there.

(Cards being: The Agent of Judgement Saturn and Solar Ray.

Also, the pun side of me looks at the trap card and all I can think is, "Oh, they turned Seth/Set/Seto into a ray of sunshine.")

@nyanbinaryrose: It’s very common in this fandom to ship the yamis with their hosts. Do you see Seth and Seto’s relationship as more familial, platonic, romantic…?

Excellent question!

Short Answer: Yes.

Long Answer: It's complicated.

Seth explicitly refers to Seto as his son, because Seth, unlike Yami Yugi, knows that his host is his reincarnation. I also make reincarnation a hereditary thing in this universe, though that doesn't get mentioned until Season Five because it's not relevant until then. But basically, if you're someone's reincarnation, it's because their family line carried on in a way that ties you back to them by blood. (Don't ask about Yugi/Yami, I'll get to that explanation in Season Five lol)

I've actually written a scene for later in Season Three that didn't make the final cut, but it's in their soul room and Seto decides to kiss Seth. He's going through some stuff mentally and has decided that Seth might be the only person in the world that he can trust. Seth is caught way off guard and tries to tell him no, that he shouldn't be the object of his affections (but his reasoning there is "I'm a spirit and someday my mission will be complete, and then I have to pass on to the Afterlife"). The scene then either goes two ways: Seto storming out, pissed at being rejected, or Seto insisting and getting his way, with Seth yielding because he knows that he'll treat Seto right when so many people haven't, and he wants Seto to know that sex can be a good, enjoyable thing. It's an unfinished deleted scene, so those two outcomes are equally valid, because it's not canon either way.

Seth is not morally opposed to sleeping with Seto, he just doesn't think it's healthy for Seto long-term. He doesn't want Seto to only trust him like that.

There are times later where Seto will refer to Seth as a father figure, because it's the best way that he can explain to a third party what their bond is like, but it's not an adequate or complete description.

Their relationship is so multifaceted that it can be considered all of those things in some way: familial, platonic, *and* romantic. The only thing it won't become is sexual, but even that's kind of a blurry line, because Seth is always with him. Seth sees him naked every day. If Seto does eventually start a relationship with someone *ahem* Seth is going to be there for all of that too, not in a creepy way, he just can't help it. Seto can put the Rod in a box, but Seth's spirit still dwells around the artifact, and Seto will never leave the Rod far out of his immediate reach for long.

So, will they ever fuck in Rock Bottom? Not outside of a deleted scene, no. Would Seth kiss Seto? Absolutely. Will Seto wish at some point that Seth was the only person he needed to have in his life? Yes. But we don't usually get what we want in this world.

They're not normal about each other, but it's impossible for them to be normal about each other given the circumstances.

Also, yes, I do ship Stoicshipping, but I ship a lot of things.

It’s so interesting to see the traits Priest Set has and by extension Kaiba, that are probably attributable to Set, the god.

Set is the god of war, chaos, and storms. Associated with the desert and desert winds (and thus the color red), foreign lands and foreign people. Before he became the villainous counterpart to Osiris and Horus he was a hero god who saved Ra during his nightly descent from an evil serpent and ensured the sun rose again.

Now he’s the chaos to the order and good represented by Osiris and Horus. Necessary to the balance of life. And I think you can kind of see that balance play out in the rivalry between Atem and Set and Yugi and Kaiba, or at least see that was probably the intention behind the rivalry.

Interestingly, he’s also known to have had foreign consorts who were foreign goddesses. So there is even a basis for Set and Kisara’s love, if you see her as a powerful foreign entity, which I do.

Currently thinking about Seto and Seth and their mess of a relationship.

Thinking about all the different stages of Seth that Seto gets to interact with, and how he engages differently with each one. Thinking about what separation from Seth does to Seto. Thinking about what separation from Seto does to Seth.

Thinking about how Seth knows that this arrangement is temporary and some day he'll leave Seto to move on to the afterlife.

Thinking about how long it took Seto to accept Seth, and now he can't stand being without his guidance.

Thinking about righting ancient wrongs and making atonement for the sins of your father and trying to manage a power beyond your limits while fighting an evil beyond your understanding.
