Primrose Gray’s Legacy, Act One: The Younger Years, Chapter Five: Kissed

A/N: With the house to myself and all the afternoon as well, and with finals nearing every day, I have decided to finish this chapter!! This chapter was one of the cutest things I ever wrote and many things were taken from this small one-shot I wrote a while ago. 

Summary: Primrose wishes to explore more of her girlhood, but this time, she asks a close friend for it.

15th of January, 1892

Primrose had adjusted to Hogwarts quickly, and had missed it over winter break, and had very much looked forward coming back. Over the break, many couples from her father’s peers had come over, and had overheard the older ladies giggle about kissable guys. Primrose had been thinking about it, and many had agreed most of them had kissed their much older and stinky husband on their wedding day, in front of everybody. It was everywhere. And the thought of it nauseated her. Poor William of course, wasn’t a bad option, but she longed to have it like in the novels she had begun reading behind her mother’s back: she wanted it to be with someone she trusted and was fond of enough.

She had debated all the way back who could it be: she didn’t know Malcolm enough to ask such a thing, and saw her male friends as brothers. The moment Henry approached her, looking like he was running away from something, it struck her.

“Primrose,” he breathed “please take me out of here before the gossip girls find me!”

“I’ll need something in return,”

“Deal,” Then, she grabbed his hand and they both started running away, upstairs, and entered a small and deserted hall with few to no paintings, most of them dormant. Good. They both gasped and looked at one another.

“Thank God,” Henry breathed “if one of them asked me one more time about me being a prince, I would’ve snapped.”

“I know the feeling. They look at me like I’m some prize to be won. It’s disgusting.”

They both sat in comfortable silence, catching their breath and looked at one another. Could she really be that cold and ask him for such a thing?

“So, you’ve rescued me.”

“U—uh, I don’t want anything for now, but...”

Henry squeezed her hand “If you need something, you just need to ask.”

Primrose smiled. There was absolutely no pressure in having her first kiss just yet. She was just eleven, for heaven’s sake!

Primrose knocked on William’s door and he was surprised to see him. She managed a smile for him and fidgeted with her small fingers.

“Can I help you?”

“I want to… discuss something.”

He nodded curtly “Please, sit.”

She sat on the edge of the bed and thought for one moment how tell him that “I confess I do not know where to begin.”

“The beginning, I suppose.”

“Alright,” she breathed “I can do that. Ahem. I do not know if you’ve thought of that, but I have.”

“Of what?”

Primrose blushed “Well, uh… being attracted to someone… Kissing someone even.” When she saw his alarmed face, she quickly put his racing thoughts to rest “Do not fret, I do not feel that way towards you. Or anybody, but… I mean no offence, but I do not like the idea of you being my first kiss on my wedding day.”

“None taken,” he waved.

“How would you feel if… before walking down the aisle I… with discretion, of course, was I to… see for myself what’s out there? So can you, by the way.”

William stood in silence for a moment before biting his lip “If that is what you want… I have no trouble. You’re free in my eyes. You don’t need to ask for my permission.”

“I’m not asking for permission,” she declared “I am consulting you. Because what we do as individuals affects us and our parents.”

He looked down “You have a point. Forgive me, my lady.”

“…How many times do I have to tell you that I am Prim to you?” She smiled.

12th of February, 1893

If Primrose said she hadn’t noticed all kinds of couples kissing rather passionately in the halls and corners of the castle, she’d be lying. The sight rather made her blush, but those images were rather intriguing: the man’s hands on the woman’s hips, their lips together, something intimate and sacred about the touch and the yearning. Primrose knew that it’d be a long time before she even went through that, but having a knowledge of what to do was certainly wise. Beatrice had told her of her experience kissing the stable hand’s son: your whole body vibrates, your heart has never beat any faster and you look at their lips, the need growing stronger.

“But, of course,” she laughed “yer too young for that. A small peck couldn’t hurt.”

Primrose frowned “A peck?”

“Aye. When the lips touch for a second at least.”

Primrose nodded. Right, a peck. That seemed rather easy. A small brush.

“May I ask why yer asking, m’lady? Anyone picked your fancy? Or you’re tryin’ to like your fiancé better?”

“No, I just… I want to have a saying on my first times. Just in a few things. If I can’t pick my groom, I deserve to pick something else.”

Beatrice nodded “I understand. Every woman should, though. But alas, tis still verra much a man’s world.”

“Poor girls have it so easy. I wish I had your freedom, Bea.”

Beatrice chuckled bitterly “Once the cold, hunger and hard work settles in yer bones, you’ll change your mind, ma’am.”

“Please, call me Primrose. I want to enjoy being away from scrutiny as much as I can.”

“Alright, Prim,” Beatrice winked “anyone in mind for yer first experience as a girl?”

She bit her lip and nodded towards Henry, who marvelled at the moving painting of Helga Hufflepuff. Beatrice giggled “A choicest election indeed. Many dream of kissin’ a prince. You get to do so.”

Primrose sighed “If he accepts.”

“Only a fool would refuse Primrose Gray’s kiss.”

Primrose took a nervous breath “I hope you’re right, and that you’re not appealing to my vanity in vain.”

The next morning

Primrose had wondered all night how she’d do this. Having devoured most of the romance books of the library and the ones she brought from Winbourne, she knew well that one thing was the experience of the writers who were much older than her (or dead) and then there was practise.

Henry himself appeared before she could be swallowed into a trance of her thoughts “I was wondering if you’d like to prank Headmaster Black.”

Primrose frowned “Whyever would we do such a thing?”

“Because he’s been awful to us for not belonging to high society and he’s been talking about your mother. Something about ‘impotence and inability’ to have a child.”

“That oaf said what?!” She cried.

Henry placed a careful hand to her mouth and looked around. Then, he pulled her out of sight and whispered “I am as angry as you are. You know I’m fond of your lady mother. That is why we’re going to vindicate her.”

Primrose looked at Henry in his eyes “Tell me what you’ve got.”

A few minutes later, Primrose had tempered with Headmaster Black’s tea, putting all kinds of spices and Henry tempered with his breakfast pastries. Their friend Lord Alden had helped, for he had tempered with his breakfast many times and he and Miss Falcon would take the blame, as usual.

Primrose and Henry sat down, observing once in a while Black’s reaction. When Black started coughing and wheezing at his way-too-spicy tea, he sought to calm it down with pastries. He was relieved… until he stiffened and his eyes got wide.

“Falcon! Alden! Detention!”

Abraham and Emmeline laughed, both starting to run as fast as lighting while Henry and Primrose looked innocent. Henry winked from his seat of Hufflepuff and Primrose stiffened a laugh. Her friend Siobhan’s eyebrows shoot up “Was that all you, Prim?”

“I had help.” The lady smiled.

However, Professor Cifuentes looked at them suspiciously and Primrose signalled Henry to flee. He was quick to do so.

Primrose and Henry walked on the Hogwarts grounds, giggling and reminiscing over the prank they pulled. Primrose still had the same thoughts, and Henry, having shared their lives, noticed this well enough to ask “Are you alright, Prim? You seem to have your head elsewhere…”

“Hm? Oh, yeah, I just…” She guessed this was it. Better to take out the elephant in the room “Well, may I ask you something personal?” Henry nodded “Have you… ever thought of your first kiss?”

The boy suddenly stopped walking and looked at the lady with wide eyes, starting to stutter out a response before he finally found the words “Not… not much? I suppose I have other things in mind.”

Primrose sighed “Mama did tell me that boys and girls regard that event differently, but again, you are no mere boy.”

Henry looked at his friend quizzically “Do you have someone in mind? Your fiancé, perhaps?”

It was Primrose’s turn to stop on her tracks and look bewildered at Henry “Good Heavens, no! He might be nice-looking, but it’s not him.”

He cocked his head to one side “Who, then?”

Primrose went red and whispered “I was actually thinking of you…”

“Me?!” He cried, startling some students chatting in the courtyard. He was quick to turn red as well and quickly took her arm and went to one corner of the courtyard “May, uh, may I ask why me, of all eligible people?”

Taking a deep breath, she looked at him in the eyes “Because you’re the only man I fully trust with such matter. The others are too old, gross of boyish with it. And… I feel safe with the idea.”

Henry softened “That is sweet on your part. Uh, must it be…?”

“Whenever you feel ready.”

He nodded “Good.”

For the next twenty minutes, they walked in awkward and tense silence, aimlessly touring the unseen corners of the castle, going up and up until they found a corridor that was deserted of anything. They sat, both slightly shaking with nerves and excitement.

Henry was the one to break the ice “And, ah, do you know what we do now?”

Primrose flushed bashfully “I have read about it and… observed the couples.” She swallowed a big lump and looked at him “First, we need to come closer…”

They both instantly got close, their hands touching, their eyes on the other’s lips “And then…?”

“We both swivel our heads like this… you go left, Henry.” He chuckled nervously at their heads bumping slightly and Primrose had to swallow a giggle not to break the ambiance. When their noses touched, remembering what she had seen and read, Primrose softly cupped his cheek in her hand and whispered so low that he shouldn’t be able to hear it “Close your eyes.”

He did and she gently pressed her lips to his. Her heart threatened to spill out and she could taste his breakfast and cologne. As soon as it began, it was over and they both smiled “That… was actually nice.”

Primrose pressed a napkin to her slightly wet lips “It truly was. Here.”

After a few minutes taking in this new experience, they realised they’d be late to Care of Magical Creatures and both sprinted there, exchanging looks between them.

“Forgive us, Professor Falcon.”

The man looked between the lady and the prince and raised his eyebrows, chuckling “It’s alright, you’re right on time.”

Suspecting that he suspected something, they both focused on the class, and Estelle asked her why her lips were swollen. Primrose blushed completely and carried on her activities. Smiling to herself, she picked a wild flower off the field and gave it to Henry with a ‘Thank you for today’ note. She’d treasure this moment for a long while, indeed.

i like to think henry has always liked to spend time with prim but once they both find out the other has magical abilities too, they'd become closer. that's when they don't have to keep any secrets from each other any more so it could bring them closer!

Benedict Bridgerton x (F) Reader

Summary: (Requested)  the reader is super clumsy and Benedict is always there to take care of her (he would hold her when she’s about to trip and maybe wipe off something that’s on hand he always thought he sees her only as his little sister. but when he sees her with another man, who is just as considerate with her as he is, he’s afraid that he would lose her forever.

As the neighbor of the esteemed Bridgerton family in their London home, it was natural for the Savoy and Bridgerton homes to feel one in the same. With shared walkways and shared walls, the families grew close knit over the course of time. The Savoy family consisted of five children, a small number when compared to the Bridgerton eight. The eldest was Henry, then, yourself, next was Primrose, followed by the twins Everett and Josephine. 

Everyone got along swimmingly, your mothers being some of the closest of friends and many of the children from the other household had come to feel as though they were an extension of your own family. 

In one of many evenings spent together as families, you found yourself lingering with the sibling most closely in age to yourself, Benedict. The two of you had just under a year in age difference, which meant one of you had followed the other in milestones and footsteps rather closely. That did change as you aged however, what hadn’t was your friendship to one another. 

The group was settling down for dinner, the rampant amount of laughter in the drawing room from the twins and Hyacinth and Gregory, the chastising of mothers shortly following them. The two of you had snuck away into one of the other rooms of the house, one that was not used nearly as frequently. The library had been sort of a hide out for the two of you, where you would play make believe and demand that Benedict act as your Vicount, you his Viscountess. Shelves collected memories alongside books, and the two of you lingered in that as you pull a book from it’s home. “It feels as though it were just yesterday that you and I would hide under the desks as though they were caves, using the lounges as ships.” You speak with amusement, fingers paging through the papers bound in the book in your hand. 

“It truly does, doesn’t it? It’s unfortunate that our time in leading strings was over so quickly.” Benedict sits on one of the aforementioned chaise lounges, lighting a cigarette. You catch him from the corner of your eye and laugh softly.

“Are you attempting to scent my home with tobacco perfumes?” You scold, quickly shutting the book in an effort to show haste. Instead, your finger catches on the edge of one of the papers, slicing your finger slightly. A light cry and you’re shaking your hand and dropping the book to the floor. As you inspect your own hand, Benedict is readily at your side.  

“Well, now what have you done?” He teases with a grin as you look up at him, cigarette extinguished in a nearby ashtray - thanks to your father’s own filthy habit - as he pulls a handkerchief from his pocket, easily pressing the fabric to the crimson line on your finger, his hand taking your own delicately. 

“Might I have not been otherwise engaged perhaps I would’ve been more cautious.” You retort with a knowing smirk. This was not a new incident. Benedict's handkerchiefs made plenty of appearances in an effort to undo the woes of your clumsiness. Bruised palms of hands from rug burns, spilled tea on dresses, once had been mud upon your gloves. He was always looking out for you, and you showed your appreciation by personally washing and pressing each handkerchief you’d stolen from him before it’s ample return. You look to him with a smile of appreciation, one of his own reflecting yours before your names echo in the hall in calling for dinner. 

Sitting next to one another, your families engage in conversation upon the ongoing social season - one that had been stressing both you and Daphne to the very edge. The two of you had spoken at great length of her claim as the diamond of the season and the Duke’s sudden return. You’d also discussed the many suitable men that had called for you in the previous days - a conversation that Benedict never seemed to be concerned with.

“Why is it that your boys have yet to find interest in the social season, Violet?” Your father speaks up, leaving you to glance at your friend, seeing his face shy from your eyesight. 

“Well, Anthony has been rather occupied overseeing the many callers that Daphne has received. Benedict has offered his assistance as well.” You can hear Prim snicker with Eloise as both of them were well acquainted in the time the second woman’s brothers spent outside of public events. Despite that you mentally dismiss them as Violet speaks. “Dear, have you had any delightful conversations with suitors?” You clear your throat and look to the woman who was like a second mother to you. 

“Not any that particularly stand out. I am sure the doors of Bridgerton House have been rather busy with Daphne’s line of bachelors.” You nudge the young woman’s elbow, smiling at your friend as you hear Anthony’s struggle to clear his throat. 

Conversation carries on into the dessert course, where Benedict seems to find amusement in something on your features. Setting down your napkin you look at him with matched laughter. “Whatever is it now?” With a snicker he’s picking up your abandoned napkin, reaching up and carefully wiping your upper lip. 

“You’ve chocolate all along your face as though you were growing a mustache.” You simply laugh at the image that forms in your head, the two of you giggling as you give a brief thank you. It is then that your mother speaks again. 

“Benedict, darling, will you be accompanying Daphne to Madame Willard’s ball tomorrow evening?” The gentleman looks passed you with a lingering smile before clearing his throat. 

“Yes, Mrs. Savoy, I do believe your eldest daughter and my sister are rather excited to be in attendance.” Soon after his words, Daphne juts into discussion about her gown for the evening, a bright smile on Violet’s face at her daughter’s excitement.

It is not long after that the families begin to separate for the evening. You stand on the porch step, speaking with Colin about his plans for travel that he has yet to falter on come the end of the social season in June. Benedict distracts your attention from his brother with a grin. “I believe that we shall meet again tomorrow evening at the Willard home?” He suggests and you smile with a nod. 

“That we shall, Mr Bridgerton.” Violet calls out to you and you move to wave to her before you lose your balance on the edge of the stoop, Benedict quickly maneuvering to catch you, leaving you both in a fit of laughs as he stands you upright. 

“If you can manage to survive the day without another incident.” He taunts once more before taking quick steps down the steps. 

“Goodnight Benedict.” You say it with a songlike tune as you wave him and his family to their home nextdoor, all of you retiring for the evening. 

It is the next evening that you do see him again. For the first interaction between you it is brief, pleasantries are exchanged before suitors ask to fill your dance card. Swiftly distracted with conversation, Benedict himself is tasked with watching over his sister and her own line of men.

Later in the evening he finds his eye drifting. Instead of a watchful gaze upon Daphne who seems to be struggling with some of her prospects, he finds you in his line of sight. You’re posed with a man, dancing on the floor rather cautiously, apologizing profusely for stepping on his foot. Despite it, the two of you seem to be swelling with laughter. As the dance slows, he sees just out of sight, the man reaching and moving a stray bit of hair out of your face, his eyes set upon you in a strange manner.

Within moments, Benedict is able to identify the feeling that flows through him as strong as the Thames current does. It is heavy fear. Fear that you are starting off a different path. One that would leave the two of you ostracized from one another until fate stepped in once again. The moment there was a proposal on your doorstep would be the moment he would lose you forever. Unless he does something drastic.

He can hear his name be called from his mother, faintly over the noise of the crowd surrounding him. In very few steps, he’s approaching the two of you just as the song changes, leaving you to step away from the young man, only for Benedict to swoop into his place. Shock fills your features as his hand grips to yours, another firmly on your waist. “And might I ask what you are doing? My dance card is full and you are not honoring it.” You speak firmly, looking at him with slight contempt.

“I needed a moment to speak with you.” He rationalizes, only before you try to pull away.

“We’ll have words later on Ben, this is really important-“

“So is this.” It’s filled with urgency, and you look to him with sudden concern. It is unlike him to have emotion wavier in his speech, which is why it stands out like a sore spot to you.

“As it were. What is going on? Is everyone alright?” Your eyes catch his in the light, watching as he doesn’t dare turn his face away from yours. You can see his Adam’s apple bob before he speaks once again, leaning a little closer as to ensure that you do not misunderstand him.

“I do not think that it had dawned upon me until this evening that your search for a husband would take you from me.” Your eyebrows furrow, leaving you to attempt to speak,

“Benedict I don’t understand-“ He cuts you off once more.

“In all of the memories I have of my father I do not recall a single one where he did not devote his soul to my mother.” He pulls away, looking you in the eye again, the both of you still moving with the timing of the music. “There were moments of hardship and I can recollect times where he had great anger. But it was never towards her. While I was still rather young, he did not fail to remind me of how deeply he cared for her and everyone of his children.” It is now you see tears beginning to form in his eyes, a concerned hand reaching to his cheek.

“My dearest friend, what in the heavens above has brought this on?” With reassurance, he continues on.

“When he passed I saw the toll it had on my mother. She described to us that there was nothing more she prayed for than for his peaceful rest, and for him to guide their children to a love such as the one they had for each other. As my eldest friend, I know that this may bring great concern to you and strain to the connection that we have but I can no longer turn a blind eye towards my feelings.” His grip in your hand tightens as he slows with the music, the two of you pausing completely.

“My mother prayed that he would lead me to the most treasured of friendships, the most blessed of women and the strongest of loves. My dear. He led me to you. I have been a fool to not have seen it til now but I must act with haste if I want to ensure my opportunity does not depart before my eyes. Ms Savoy I am… utterly and foolishly in love with you. Long have I been your obedient servant before either of us knew it to be true. You might turn at my confession but I shan’t disappoint my father by not attempting to walk through the door he has opened for me.” Within the subsequent pause, the two of you share in warm, tearful gaze, unmoving despite those around you who have continued to flutter around the room. Still in the position of a dancing pair on a wooden ballroom floor, seemingly frozen in time.

“Benedict. I do not know much but..” you take pause to gather your thoughts, seeing his jaw tighten with concern. You shush him quickly, shaking your head. “No, dear I assure you this shall not be painful to hear. Quite the opposite in fact.” Your hand grips his bicep, tears slowly escaping from your eyes, rolling down cheeks, his own thumb wiping at them. “I do not know much, but I do know that your father was a bright man. And I know that I sought out a man such as him to be my husband one day. A man who cherished his wife deeply, a dutiful husband and father. I have been under the guise that a man such as one like him were hard to come by.” With a small smile, you are able to whisper to Benedict with care. “Instead, I can see that he, himself, had raised such a man. A kind, thoughtful and loving gentleman. Named Benedict Bridgerton.” With relief escaping him he drops your hand, quickly pulling you to his embrace, both of you tightly tying yourselves to one another, unwilling to move. Unwilling to release the other, for an eternity and more.

When a duel makes you more famous than your Naval career

Rear Admiral James Macnamara (1768-1826) earned a reputation as a fearless naval officer, but it was not so much his seamanship or courage that ensured his name was remembered, but his Newfoundland dog.

On 6 April 1803, Macnamara fought a duel at Primrose Hill, London, with Colonel Robert Montgomery, an officer in the Life Guards who also owned a dog of the same breed. The quarrel resulted from a fight between the two animals in Hyde Park that had taken place on the same day. In the duel, which was fought with pistols, both men were wounded, Montgomery fatally. In the subsequent trial for manslaughter, Macnamara defended himself by saying that the provocation and insult came from Montgomery. He called a number of famous naval figures, including Viscount Hood, Admiral Jervis and Admiral Nelson, who testified that Macnamara was the opposite of quarrelsome. The jury deliberated for 20 minutes and then found him not guilty.

How did he manage to mobilise so many important people to testify in his favour? Now even though he made a name for himself because of the duel, he was in fact a man who served under the aforementioned gentlemen. He himself came from a naval family and served in the last years of the American War of Independence in the East Indies, where he was engaged in the Battle of Cuddalore. During this time he was awarded the rank of acting lieutenant, but was subsequently demoted back to ensign for failing the examination.

He returned to naval service during the Spanish and Russian Rearmament and served with Lord Hood aboard HMS Victory at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. He saw action in the Mediterranean and was eventually promoted to his own command. He was a successful frigate captain, serving with Nelson and making several hard-fought captures. He ended his service as a captain in the Mediterranean with a stint in the Battle of Cape St Vincent and later served in the West Indies before the Peace of Amiens.

It was during this brief period of peace that the duel occurred and he was able to appeal to his superiors who gave him a good report card and he was thus acquitted.

But in May 1803 Macnamara offered his services to the Admiralty but no employment was forthcoming, except in March 1804 when he was offered a post with the Irish Sea Fencibles, which he declined. He was openly punished in this way for his misdemeanour.

In July 1804, a black servant named Dixon won a case against Macnamara at Kings Bench for assault after being pushed against the railings in Cavendish Square and insulted as an "impudent black dog" in response to Macnamara's favourable comment about the appearance of a woman with whom Dixon had been conversing. On 25 February 1805, Macnamara was again on trial before Lord Ellenborough, the Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, over a dispute with Dixon's employer, a sub-lieutenant of the Life Guards named Marcus Henry Lynch, whom Macnamara had called a "knave" and threatened to "crack the whip" for refusing to dismiss the servant. So much for a non belligerent and good man. However, the proceedings were discontinued because the parties were supposed to reach an out-of-court settlement. 

He managed to secure a command in the North Sea during the Napoleonic Wars 1806 and served from 1808 on in the Baltic Fleet under Admiral Sir Richard Goodwin Keats. He stayed in service until 1814 and was even made Rear Admiral on 4 June 1814 even though he no longer held a command. He died in Bristol on 15 January 1826, aged only 57.

The relationship throughout the last bit of the 19th century and well into the 21st century was full of changes into the dynamic of these two noble houses.

In 1882, the House of Alderly, having been made royal via Princess Augusta, set their eyes on Lady Primrose Gray for a possible prospect for the only heir to the estate, Henry. Though this engagement never came to pass, but both heirs became bestest of friends and remained close for the rest of their lives.

In the first half of the 20th century, both of them decided to solidify this alliance by marrying Primrose's most beautiful daughter to Henry's only son and heir, Edward, thus uniting both houses forever. They had a loving relationship and were beloved by the people.

In the 21st century, though both houses remained friendly, Lady Diana became infatuated with Quentin, who sadly did not reciprocate. An argument revealed such feelings and someone in their circle betrayed them, twisting Diana's intentions towards Quincey and making of such feelings a scandal of an England who held under scrutiny the houses and monarchy. It didn't help that Quincey saw himself in another scandal some time later by having his homosexuality revealed and his anti-monarchy sentiments. Things would remain tense for ten years, after Diana and Quincey repaired their relationship and started anew.

The relationship between these women and these men has been diverse, complex and compelling to many. One can't deny the charm of these blond-haired men with a rebel spirit and the black-haired and dutiful ladies with a strong personality.
