20 November 1947 | Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten
At seven o'clock on the morning of the wedding, John Dean (Prince Philip's valet) had tapped on the Duke of Edinburgh's bedroom door at Kensington Palace where he was staying and entered with his tea. ‘He woke at once and was plainly in great form, extremely cheerful and in no way nervous,' Dean recalled.
Back at Buckingham Palace, the princess's maid Margaret 'Bobo' MacDonald had for once not had to wake 'her little lady' as she always called her. The princess was already up and sitting in her dressing gown by the window looking at the crowds. 'I can't believe it's really happening, Crawfie,' she said to Marion Drawford, her old governess, who joined her by the window, 'I have to keep pinching myself.'
By 11.25, Prince Philip and David Milford Haven had taken their places inside the abbey to await the arrival of the bride and the King. Six kings and seven queens were among the 2500-strong congregation, the largest gathering of royalty, regnant and exiled, anyone could remember. As the sound of cheering outside the abbey rose from a rumble to a mighty roar, the rousing hymn, 'Praise My Soul, The King Of Heaven' provided the vocal backdrop to the entrance of the princess and the King. The young bride in her ivory satin Norman Hartnell gown held onto the arm of her father, who was dressed in the uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet.
The princess's father wrote a letter to his daughter, full of love and pride about how he contemplated his life without her: ‘I was so proud of you and thrilled at having you so close to me on our long walk in Westminster Abbey, but when I handed your hand to the Archbishop I felt that I had lost something very precious. You were very calm and composed during the Service and said your words with such conviction that I knew everything was all right.’

I am a terrible person but when I heard the sad news of Thomas Kingston, it reminded me that I am forever confused that Prince Michael and the Duke of Kent are brothers because they look nothing alike, not even remotely. Yet, their sister kind of looks like both of them. I know you don’t love these kinds of asks, where people want to compare resemblances but this one always confuses me.
I don't think you're a terrible person. You don't know Thomas and it's natural for your mind to wander to people around him when you think of him. You weren't mean and given the way people have been talking about Thomas lately this is incredibly polite!! Anyway, I don't hate these messages as such. The reason I don’t like them in all honesty is because I can never see the resemblance so I feel like I'm ruining someone's fun. And I always have made that clear in my answers because I get messages about similarities all the time so I feel like when people ignore that and send me things saying “such and such looks just like this royal” anyway, I’m backed into a corner where I’m being a killjoy because someone else created a situation where I have to be a killjoy, if that makes sense. I guess basically I hate being judged for something that wasn’t under my control (also why I hate working with others, I’d rather succeed or fail on my own merit lol). But this message is fine because 1) you have shown you read my blog and know my history on this, which I appreciate and 2) you’re saying you can’t see the similarity so you’re in the boat I’m normally in haha.
I think the beard and the way they have aged has contributed a lot but they do have quite different eyes to me. These are two pictures of them both younger and clean shaven, see what people think:
