What do you think of the idea that there might be an elder Stone Monkey, thousands upon thousands of years old, who managed to survive the Floods (was probably an infant at the time) right up until Wukong was hatched and they had been the Troupe's storyteller when Wukong was a cub? What if they tried to pass on information about the Stone Monkeys to Wukong, but death took them before they could tell the little cub his true identity as the Lost Prince of Last Matriarch. Perhaps it was this elders destht hat had been the catalyst of Wukong seeking out inmortality?

Like all the survivors of the flood are preparing for their Matriarch to go for the Long Sleep (aka create her Stone Egg), and the Troupe's Storyteller is told to stay behind for whomever next inhabits their homeland, and tell them the stories of their people.

That old Stone Monkey waited. And waited. And soon monkey demons pushed out of the mainlands of China by the rapid rise of humans arrived on boats and rafts, following the tales of Stone Monkeys that left an island of endless Fruit and Flowers after the Flood.

The Storyteller would be very old by the time other demons found him, rather frail and his memory not as good as it once was. But he was sharp enough to govern, and guide the fragmented troupes around their new home. He told them that Others came before them, and that they left behind a paradise for whomever respected their sacrifice.

The Monkey Demons take the Storytellers word and value it. And they made him their Elder.

Once day as Elder was telling a story about the stars, a massive crack! rang out from atop Mount Huaguo.

THe Elder paused mid-sentence and started ambling towards the mountain with the speed of a far younger monkey. That sound. It was instinctual. He couldn't forget it in a million years.

His Matriarch's egg was hatching.

The youngsters he'd been tending to followed his heels closely, wondering what the excitement was about. Little Ma, Ba, Beng, and Liu had always kept close to the Elder, and they followed him up the steep cliffs to where The Boulder sat.

But The Boulder was not whole like it had always been. In it's cracked form lay a smaller, egg-shaped stone with a little paw reaching out. Ma, the boldest cub with a number of little siblings, immediately leaped forward and began cleaning bits of dirt and dust off the mysterious "Little Stone Monkey's" face.

The four cubs were very confused when the Elder began crying with joy. The newborn monkey a near copy of his long-lost Matriarch. His troupe's Prince.

That same Prince would grow into a fine young man. One that discovered the buried Stone Palace in his own terms, and invited his non-stoney troupe inside with open arms. A Prince that was soon crowned Leader of the troupe for his discovery and protection.

A Prince that held the Elder's hand while time itself had decided to take the elderly monkey to Diyu. The Elder finally told the Princethe truth. That he had a mother that loved him, loved him enough to wager her own life to ensure the survival of her son and of her people's culture as a whole. A mother who was also The Matriarch of a dying species. A species of which the Prince belonged to and would soon be the last known member.

The Prince declared to the Elder without thought; "I will find a way to live long enough to see our people return! You'll see! And I'll find a way to make sure I'm not the only one left!"

The Elder laughed. His Matriarch's son was so much like her.

The Prince set out for the Mainland the day after the Elder's pasding. In ten years he would return and free his people from the tyrany of an opportunistic demon that preyed on the loss of the Elder.

The Prince was soon declared King under his new name, one gifted to him by the man that taught him the words of humanity;
