fighting evil by moonlight
-----
word count: 1.4k || Fluff, Humor, Crackish
Characters: Bruce, Dick, Tim, Steph, Jason, Cass, Alfred
Read on Ao3
-----
Laughter echoed through the halls of Wayne manor. In a place so big, it was easy to feel lonely, especially when its baby birds left the nest. Tonight, though, the house was filled with joy.
A warmth bloomed in Bruce's chest at every laugh from the kids; his kids. He'd missed this sound. He'd missed having everyone together.
Dick was visiting from Bludhaven. Tim was staying in the mansion while his parents traveled, and of course Steph tagged along. Cass was a new but welcome addition to the family.
Even Jason was here, a temporary truce called under Alfred's request. He lingered at the edges of the group, but Bruce saw the occasional smile that was so like the Jaylad he used to know it took his breath away.
The only one really missing was Barbara, who was having dinner with her dad. She'd sent her love, though, and the house was more than full enough to make up for it.
"Truth or Dare, Replacement?" Jason asked, the usual sting in the nickname absent.
"Truth," Tim said quickly. He was unwilling to test how far the truce went, especially when it came to him. The way Jason's mouth curved maliciously upwards made him wonder if that was a mistake.
"You were a little stalker fanboy for years, yeah?" Jason said.
"Yeah…?"
"Did you ever write fanfic about us?"
Tim's face flushed bright red. He shot a glare towards Steph, the only person to whom he'd confided that embarrassing fact, but she was laughing to hard to notice.
"Well?" Jason asked. The glee in his tone held just a hint of danger. Tim had a feeling that the older boy would come up with a much worse way to embarrass him if he didn't answer.
"Um… a few," he admitted as nonchalantly as possible.
"A few?" Steph snickered. "A few dozen mayb-"
Tim tackled her, holding a hand over her mouth before she could keep talking.
"At least I didn't write any x reader fics about people we know," he said.
Stephanie heard the warning in his voice and shut up. Smart. Tim was more than willing to retaliate with embarrassing facts of his own.
"Awww, baby bird," Dick cooed, in a sweet tone that he only used as a prelude to mockery. "I didn't know you were such a fan. Did you want an autograph? Maybe a picture?"
"He's already got plenty of those," said Jason.
"Shut up, shut up!"
Bruce watched them squabble fondly. There was a hint of a smile on his face, barely enough to be noticed. However, it was enough to gain the attention of Tim, who was desperate to turn the attention away from himself.
"Ok, ok, I answered the question, already! Uh… Bruce, truth or dare?"
All eyes swiveled towards Bruce. Technically, he wasn't even playing. He'd sat on the sidelines, content to watch his kids having fun. Now, five expectant faces were turned towards him.
"Truth," Bruce said, deciding to play along. The delight on all of his kids' faces was worth it.
Tim thought for a long moment. It was tempting to ask Bruce something embarrassing, but he had an opportunity here; he wouldn't waste a chance to get Bruce to actually open up.
"What made you become a vigilante rather than something else? What was the biggest inspiration for an alter ego?"
"Hn…"
A long silence stretched, and they watched with bated breath.
"...Dare," said Bruce.
An explosion of protests.
"Come on, that's not fair!" "Just answer the question, old man." "Pleaseeee?"
"I believe," Alfred said, startling Jason and Steph, who had been turned away from the doorway. Alfred was as quiet as any of them when he wanted to be. "I remember one particular inspiration. I hardly heard a word otherwise from Master Bruce for months."
"Jesus, Alfie, I didn't even see you come in," said Jason.
The part of Bruce that was Batman felt a sliver of concern; Jason was usually very hard to sneak up on. Did he need a refresher course on awareness training? But the part of Bruce that was Bruce, a father of- how many of them could he call his?- melted. Even if they were still at odds, Jason still felt safe enough in the manor to let his guard down.
Then, Alfred's words sank in. The pleading gazes turned to the butler, and Bruce shot Alfred a slightly panicked look. Alfred's version of this story would be mortifying.
Alfred's mustache twitched slightly as he held back a smile. Finally, he took pity on Bruce.
"I shall let Master Bruce share."
Again, his kids locked their gazes on him. Bruce tried not to sweat. His children or not, having the intense gaze of five well-trained vigilantes on him was a little nerve-wracking.
"Please," said Cass, the word sitting a little oddly in her mouth, but endearing all the same. Even more endearing were the sad, pleading eyes she gave him. She had to be taking lessons from Dick.
"...Fine," he relented.
Bruce steeled himself. Words were not his strong suit. He didn't think there was a way to word this that wouldn't embarrass him, but maybe there was a way to lessen the sting?
…no. Then, perhaps, better to get it over with.
"...Sailor Moon."
There was a single, precious second of silence before all hell broke loose.
"What?!"
"Oh my god, I thought you were just a furry."
"I can't believe Batman is a weeb!"
"Holy shit, this is the best day of my life!"
Embarrassing, yes, but Bruce thought the pure delight from his kids might just be worth it. Finally, the shouting settled down.
"B, you have to elaborate," Dick pleaded.
Bruce considered for a moment. He could tell them about the way the show was one of the few bright spots in his life after his parents funeral. He could talk about how he wished for weeks that someone like Sailor Moon had saved them. He could even tell them about his first ever designs for a suit… as his own Sailor Callisto.
"No," he finally said, standing and walking out of the room.
He had to hide the smile at the outrage that broke out behind him.
***
"C'mon, B, please watch it with me? It's just like Sailor Moon!"
Dick paused as he heard the words from across the hall. What was Steph up to?
It had been several weeks since that fateful game of truth or dare. They'd teased Bruce about loving Sailor Moon, hoping for just a little more information, but the man didn't crack. Of course he didn't, he was Batman. He wouldn't fall prey to such human pitfalls as defending his favorite childhood show.
All they really knew was that at some point, a young Bruce had watched Sailor Moon, and he'd loved it enough that that was his biggest inspiration for Batman.
Dick peeked into the room that currently held Steph, Tim and Bruce. Steph was putting her puppy-dog eyes training to good use; as her mentor, he was proud.
"Steph, while I enjoyed Sailor Moon as a child, I have grown into other interests," Bruce was saying.
Despite the denial, he was looking at Steph with a certain soft look that Dick recognized. It always appeared right before he caved to whatever Dick was asking.
"...Put it on," Bruce said with only the slightest sigh.
"Yes!" Steph pumped her fist and raced to the TV.
"What are we watching?" Dick asked, leaping over the back of the couch and landing on the opposite end to Tim.
"Madoka Magica." Steph said cheerily.
Oh. Oh.
Dick exchanged a gleeful look with Tim while Bruce's back was turned. Jason was going to be so sad he missed this.
***
Dick was barely paying attention to the show by the time episode three rolled around. His eyes stayed fixed to the screen, but his attention was locked on Bruce in his peripheral vision. Tim had gone stock still like he sometimes did as Robin, and Steph was practically vibrating.
Luckily, Bruce was too absorbed in the show to notice. Despite having 'grown out' of magical girl shows like he'd implied, B was captivated in a way Dick rarely saw.
Finally, the episode turned, and the show transformed from a sweet fantasy show into a horror drama. Bruce blinked, then furrowed his eyebrows- a strong reaction from him. Dick tried to stifle his snickers.
Bruce turned, slowly, to Steph, who was giggling like a maniac. God, he hoped Tim and Steph had had the foresight to set up a camera somewhere.
"This…" Bruce said slowly, "is why I have trust issues."
Tim and Dick burst into laughter.
