An Excerpt: The Long Road To Ruin [Part I (?)]

Hey folks, hope you're all well! Was watching some Warno when a sudden moment smacked me with some inspiration, and I put this out in about ten minutes! Will probably continue it, too!

Lieutenant Charlie Thrush could feel the cool morning breeze nip at her face, faint rays of light casting ponderous shadows across the open country before her. Perched atop her cupola she couldn't rely on the Conqueror's exquisite optics, but the sweeping plain approaching the tree-lined hill she held gave an excellent view upon all comers.

"Anything exciting out there, boss?"

"Hardly, Vish. How's the brew going?"

Private E.R. Vishruth's hand emerged from the bowels of the turret in reply, holding a steel canteen with its cap unscrewed, wispy steam billowing out through the spout.

"Good stuff, managed to stock some Grey Label in 'er before we shipped out."

As Loader, Vishruth had more jobs than feeding the beast its daily lead, and even war couldn't part an Albish trooper from this most sacred ritual. The rest of the platoon was scattered across the ridge, far too few for the stretch, and partaking in their own morning routines, while the crew of Chaste Charlotte took in the sights.

"Oi, pass the rest of it, will ya! You fucks up there can't hear it, but Foster's being a right dick."

The loader gave an exaggerated eye roll at Pei Wang's words, before retreating back into the abyss below. Five weeks ago they'd be at each others throats over something like this, Charlie mused. She didn't much like the thought of getting a new loader after Carl got into that nasty crash while on leave, but it was truely marvelous what spending a month on exercise trapped in a steel clad coffin did to you, to say nothing of a declaration of hostilies.

She stayed up there for a good few more minutes, stirring the canteen in one gloved hand and cradling her head in another. Grey Label, as it went in the battalion, tasted best with a little lubricant, and she could taste the bite of Vish's other acquisition well enough. All in all, it wasn't a great morning, but Charlie wouldn't say no to a few more like it.

Static warbling came through from her helmet's in-built microphone down below, a harsh interruption to the peace of war. Charlie grunted as went down to check the new transmission, seeing from the comm-set's display that it came from Company.

"GLOVE to all units, Fires Warning, Fires Warning. Detecting gun artillery fire from northeast, expect inbound to Hill 613 and surrounding, Clear."

"Ahh, feck it. Vish, pull over the Projectors, we're buttoning up!"

With the engine running at full blast the intercoms were absolutely vital within the armtrack's belly, and Charlie's voice rang tinny through the vehicle. Vish simply turned behind to his console, and looking through the Commander's Scope --- Charlie's only window to the outside world --- she could see the faint blue haze that told her the Conqueror's Protective Field Projector was active. That was something that took getting used to, but in her usual fashion Wang crushed her gunnery trials with the fields on after less than a week with the new armtrack. The gunner turned to give the commander a once over, and a greeting.

"Mornin', ma'am! How's the weather in the real world?"

"Cold, and about to get bloody hot!"

Seconds later the first shells hit home, fired from guns far beyond the edge of the sky. Their tell-tale whistle might've helped the infantry somewhere down the plains, but in the armtracks the only sign of the King of battle's entry came with its impacts. Great plumes of smoke and dust erupted, and though the hit home far and below the hill the sheer shock of tonnes of explosives smashing deep into Bardinian soil shook the very ground through the vehicle's loaded suspension.

"Fuckin' Hell, this is a big one they've got for us!"

Vish seemed to mean that in a brave sort of way, but his right hand, perched firmly against the armoured bulkhead that seperated the turret crew from the ammunition, told the same story his face did. Wang, crouching in her seat, eyes tight to her own sights and gazing into targets unseen, probably felt the same way.

Hell if I don't, Charlie half thought. Training shots in the fild, and five months fighting the Clans out in the Kolleen Wastes, had very little on the Ocrisian's love for big guns and using them.

The shelling lasted for five minutes, though it seemed longer. The final dozen or so weren't even explosives, and soon a thick white smog blanketed the valley below.

Charlie spoke through her headset once more, this time to the whole Platoon.

"Right, guns up. Switch to thermals, and watch your ammo. Happy hunting, First Platoon, you know what we're here."

Being on the run came with a list of limitations four parsecs long, like nights-long sessions spent planning and worrying and planning again, or a persistent bellyache you couldn’t be sure was from the strain or steady depletion of food supplies. For the first time in his life, Caleb didn’t mind being coddled when the chance presented itself. It sold the act better.

“Kanan, keep close to me,” his master crooned as they made their way through the morning market, reaching the hand not holding their basket back toward him as he lagged behind a few steps. She couldn’t be faulted for being over protective these days.

“Yes, Mom,” he complied, taking her hand and a fistful of her cloak, looking every bit a civilian child.

The odd thing about playing a part, he thought, was how much opportunity it afforded you. Before, his master rarely bestowed physical affection with the same frequency as verbal praise, but now she squeezed his hand as a comfort without a thought. He’d lost his braid out of necessity, but she still combed her fingers through his hair before bed the way other mothers did with pride in her eyes. Despite the braid’s absence, she still tugged his hood further over his face when it slipped as they walked.

“Good news, we’ll have some leftover funds this month.”

Grey.

Grey had come to find them, after Depa had grabbed Caleb and ran. The day being a blur may have been in part to the Force—granting his master speed in their flight, having leant to an impressive Force jump and the second drop in Caleb’s stomach that hour—and adrenaline. After meeting new clones who had as much idea of what was happening as they did, and spending days dodging through the trees, Grey came to find them. Himself, on their private comm, not the blankness that had taken over the rest of their men; other than to tell Caleb not to worry, Gray wouldn’t say what happened with them before they fled the planet in a stolen ship.

His armor was back at their current hideaway, wearing instead a cloak that matched theirs and a thigh holster over the civilian garb Depa had been proud fit him.

“That’s good,” Depa replied easily, “We can build our savings a bit.” She paused at a stand to look over produce for the week, Grey guiding Caleb out of her path as she moved down the table.

“Delia! So good to see you!” A voice called, and Depa smiled charmingly at the stand’s owner.

“Good morning, I see the jogan fruit arrived,” she pointed out. The man scratched his beard and gave a relieved sigh.

“Finally! I was wondering if the shipment had been jacked, but—“ Caleb readily checked out of the conversation, leaning into Grey as the man’s thumb drew circles where he held Caleb’s shoulder. Somehow Grey not wearing gloves anymore was weirder to Caleb than the man not wearing armor. Caleb looked around, observing the other market goers doing their shopping before the heat of the day picked up, waving at a couple of the children he’d managed to make friends with.

Grey homeschooled him as part of their cover, partly because Caleb was currently ahead of the civilian curriculum for his age, and partly to avoid a paper trail. Among their neighborhood though, Caleb had managed to befriend a few kind children to play with while Depa chatted and made friends with equally kind parents while running errands. The war hadn’t terribly impacted this planet, most never having seen a clone without their helmet, so Grey could walk around without much fear of being labeled a deserter of the empire. As the empire spread its influence and troopers made their way planetside, nowadays Grey kept a scarf or a kerchief tied about his neck.

Caleb tuned back in when he heard his name—or his ‘public’ name, rather.

“Is that so? Kanan seems mighty grown to only be turning twelve!” The man looked at him in disbelief that Caleb knew to be kind teasing. He nodded appreciatively while Depa hummed proudly.

“He likes to think so. He’s grown up so quickly,” She said, and Caleb had to wonder at her meaning. She continued with a small grin, “Kanan is not so grown that he doesn’t want cake for his birthday.”

Grey leaned down to his ear and stage whispered, “Stay little so we get more cake!” He was rewarded with a true laugh from Caleb and a good-natured ‘hmph’ from Depa. After handing credits over to the chuckling vendor she leaned down to Caleb.

“I will make you as many cakes as you want, even when you are grown,” she said, pausing a moment to look at Grey before amending, “Within reason.” She pressed a kiss to Caleb’s head before adjusting his hood and settling their basket back in the crook of her arm. She straightened up and bid the vendor a good day while Caleb smiled to himself. Most boys his age seemed sick of doting mothers and kisses, but he couldn’t be happier to have them. He was, luckily for them, still small for a fourteen year old, and could pass off being a couple years younger with relative ease; Grey and Depa never missed a chance to remark about his still boyish features whenever he brought it up.

He was pulled from his thoughts by Grey hefting him up onto his hip, another thing he was still small enough for no one to question, and Caleb wound his arms around the man’s neck with practiced ease. Grey nodded to the stand owner and followed after Depa, slipping his free arm around her waist once caught up. Being in hiding afforded as many opportunities as it imposed limitations.

“Did you have anything in mind for breakfast, dear?”

“Nothing in particular. Did you, love?”

“Mmm, there are still some pastries left over from yesterday.”

Caleb turned his head to join in, “Those were good!” They had been, pleasantly; not having their food provided for them meant learning how to cook with what they could get ahold of. Depa nodded her agreement.

“They were; your father is getting quite the hang of baking,” she said warmly, and Caleb felt Grey puff up a bit at the praise. “But, if we’re willing to use some of the eggs, I can make us some flatcakes and we can save the pastries for after latemeal tonight.”

Caleb had been put in charge of minding the eggs they’d picked up anyway, excited at the prospect of warm eggs and flatcakes when they arrived home and content with the quiz Grey was giving him as they walked. They’d made one last stop to pick up fresh milk for the week, declining the offer of a delivered milk can in lieu of two smaller churns and privacy, and every time Caleb failed a question the freezing metal was pressed to his neck and arms through the cloak. While Caleb was of the mind Grey could’ve easily toted the bigger milk can home, and a delivery would’ve been normal enough, Depa and Grey felt better safe than sorry.

Today was washing day, and as the small apartment they were in for the time being had a large back balcony, open to the sky but walled to the world, it was inevitable Caleb and Grey would get into a suds war after breakfast. Caleb couldn’t wait. They always came in sopping wet once the clothes were on the line, and Depa would be holding towels out in the entryway and shaking her head smiling.

Depa suddenly stopped in front of him and in a fluid moment she turned and leaned into Grey in what would’ve looked like a kiss between the hooded figures, taking one of milk churns into the basket as they exchanged quiet words. As she leaned away she gestured vaguely in the direction they’d been heading and taking the eggs from Caleb. He saw the troopers approaching the second Grey had lifted him up again.

“Dad—?”

“We’ll see you at the house then, love. You sure you’re alright with the groceries?”

Are you sure you’ll be alright by yourself?

“Oh yes, dear, I shouldn’t be long. I’ll see you and Kanan at home.”

I will be fine. Keep Caleb safe.

Depa calmly continued on the path they’d been walking, and Grey hurried away with Caleb down a side road. Caleb heard them, felt them in the Force approaching his mother. “Excuse me ma’am—“ came the mechanical, stoic voice as Grey rounded another corner.

Grey’s scarf had fallen down, but Caleb’s arms about his neck did enough in a pinch.

They wouldn’t know Depa, had no way of knowing the woman out with her family was a Jedi.

They rounded another corner and Caleb was jostled as Grey adjusted him higher.

No one seemed to be following them, but why stop Depa?

Another street passed and with his heart in his ears Caleb was holding on to his mother’s presence in the Force while he could. He could feel it slipping from him, in the way that told him she was making herself inconspicuous.

They didn’t go directly home, taking side road after alley after back way.

Grey didn’t put him down once they were in the door. Once the milk was in the conservator, he sank to the floor with Caleb. He ran his hand through Caleb’s curls and pressed their foreheads together. Taking a breath that filled his entire chest, Caleb realized they were both shaking; on his exhale, Grey squeezed him tighter.

“Did they see you?” Caleb ventured.

“I don’t know, son.”

Caleb tucked his head against Grey’s shoulder. He should let go and go pack in case they needed to get out fast. He should release his worry into the Force and fill his belly with pastries in case he needed to run with a clear head.

Grey pressed his mouth to Caleb’s temple. “I will keep you safe if things go south,” he said, a solemn vow. “If she isn’t back in half an hour I’m getting the credits and taking you to the ship.” Caleb nodded. As much as he hated the thought of leaving her, Depa’s priority had always been keeping him safe, and Grey was just as protective.

They sat in silence after that, listening for anyone coming up on the apartment and relaxing when approaching footsteps passed. Caleb was searching for Depa in the Force all the while. Grey kept an arm under him and unholstered his pistol after the first set had passed them by.

The half hour mark was getting closer and Caleb was drawing from Grey’s steady resolve to remain calm.

He didn’t feel any large numbers moving towards them, didn’t sense danger but their men in Kaller hadn’t felt like any—

“Mom,” Caleb uttered seconds before the door opened and a breathless Depa dropped their basket in the entryway, bolting the door twice before hurrying to them. Grey dropped his pistol and Depa fell into him, letting him hold onto her as she took Caleb’s face in her hands.

“Mom—“ did they follow you? Are we safe? Are we leaving? Caleb wanted to implore in that single word.

“Shhhh,” she hushed him, folding him into her arms and resting her head atop his. “They were looking for someone else, a local smuggler. Wanted to know if I’d seen them.” Caleb felt Grey wrap his arms around them both and was grateful for the embrace. He melted against Depa and relished in the warmth of her.

Grey adjusted them so Depa could lean against him with Caleb nestled between. “Do you think they recognized any of us?” Caleb felt Grey’s quiet timbre rumble against his side.

Caleb felt Depa shake her head, “I doubt it, you and Caleb left before they should’ve been able to. Our conversation was very brief, the time I took getting home was winding roads and doubling back.” Grey nodded in acknowledgement. “We’re probably safe here for a little while longer.” Another nod.

Caleb took a shuddering breath, relieved and finally truly calm. Depa was home and they were safe. That only left one pressing matter for the morning then…

“Mama?”

Depa gave him an amused hum before answering, “Yes, baby?”

“Can we please have breakfast now?”

Caleb was gently jostled as Depa and Grey chuckled against him and Depa pressed one of those treasured kisses to his curls, “Yes, baby.”

The flatcakes were met with almost twin hums of sweet-toothed appreciation, and afterward the family in hiding went about the rest of their day as they’d planned: with suds being thrown around the balcony after morning lessons, and warm towels scrubbed through dark curls. Caleb watched, bundled in warm towels, as his mother dried his father’s cheek before he leaned down to kiss her, watched her giggle in a way she never had at the Temple before squawking that Grey was dripping cold water on her, to go in and get changed while she snuggled towel-swaddled Caleb on the sofa.

Caleb noted—not for the first time and far from the last—was how much opportunity and freedom not being confined to who you were before afforded you. As Grey rejoined them in dry clothes and discussed plans for Caleb’s birthday while he prepped lunch, Depa combed her fingers through Caleb’s drying hair while they chatted. He’d bring them bits and spoonfuls to try and Caleb would venture that Grey’s brothers would be entirely put off or entirely jealous of the trio’s new life. Caleb was happy to have him in it.

Depa gave him his afternoon lessons, on star charts and hyperspace lanes, while Grey cooked—and it no longer took Caleb by surprise to think of the feeling in his chest as being home.

Andy Griffith: An Underrated Movie Star By Susan King

Andy Griffith was one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. He didn’t make the impact of his peers Marlon Brando, James Dean and Paul Newman when they all burst onto the scene in the 1950s, but Griffith demonstrated he was an actor of depth, complexity and, at times, brilliance during his 50-plus year career. His depth is especially on display in his greatest role as Lonesome Rhodes, the odious hard-living, hard-loving Arkansas drifter who becomes a television sensation in Elia Kazan’s A FACE IN THE CROWD (’57).

A dark social commentary about power and the media, A FACE IN THE CROWD is as prescient today as it was 63 years ago. It wasn’t a hit upon release but has grown in reputation over the years. And, it’s head scratching to believe that Griffith wasn’t nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance.

Perhaps he’s not uttered in the same breath as a Brando because Griffith achieved his greatest success on the small screen. He starred as the gentle widower Sheriff Andy Taylor in the beloved 1960-68 sitcom The Andy Griffith Show and as the folksy but brilliant and often cantankerous attorney Ben Matlock in the 1986-95 legal eagle series Matlock. Despite his popular, genial and understated turn as Andy Taylor (who many kids thought was the best father around), Griffith didn’t even earn an Emmy nomination.

Griffith originally wanted to be a singer or a preacher but ended up teaching at a local high school after graduating from college. But the lure of performing was too great, and he left the chalkboard behind to become a comic monologist. And he was funny. Check out his most famous routine, “What It Was, Was Football” from a 1954 The Ed Sullivan Show on YouTube. He’s so believable as the backwoods rube, audiences undoubtedly thought that was Griffith’s real character.

The year of 1955 was life-changing for Griffith. He became an overnight sensation after he was cast in the lead role as the naïve Air Force Private Will Stockdale in the live TV comedy No Time for Sergeants. He’s so mirthful as the good old boy that members of the crew can be heard laughing. Later that year, he made his Broadway debut in the stage version of No Time for Sergeants earning rave reviews and a Tony nomination. It was while he was the toast of Broadway that he was approached by Oscar-winning screenwriter Budd Schulberg (ON THE WATERFRONT, ‘54) about playing Lonesome Rhodes.

Griffith told me in a 2005 L.A. Times interview that Schulberg and his mother came to see the play and soon after Griffith met the writer at a bar. Ironically, Schulberg didn’t think Griffith could handle such a ruthless character. “We were sitting there talking and drinking,” Griffith recalled. “He told me, ‘you can’t play this role.’ I had never read the script or his short story on which it was based at that time, but I just kind of envisioned the character. I said, ‘I can’t provide it to you…but I can play it.’”

Kazan also had his doubts, but quickly changed his mind when Griffith did an impression of evangelist Oral Roberts “healing” the filmmaker. “At that moment, he and Budd could see that I had a little wild side – that is, I can create a wild side. So Gadge [Kazan’s nickname] used that. He used that part of me to find the emotions of evil, the various thousands of moods that this man had.”

Kazan and Schulberg, Griffith noted, “were trying to make the social commentary that the medium and the people who control it can control the thoughts of the country and how dangerous that can be,” Griffith said. The director told Griffith to drink some whiskey for this film’s conclusion when Rhodes is unveiled as a phony and a demagogue. “They brought me a bottle of Jack Daniels Black Label,” he said. “I would shoot a little bit and drink a little bit. I thought I was great. Gadge pulled the plug around 3 o’clock. The next day he said, ‘Andy, we have to shoot most of that over again. Today, just smell the cork!’”

The 1958 film version of NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS and another 1958 service comedy, ONIONHEAD just didn’t work and bombed with both critics and audiences. “I basically struck out in Hollywood,” Griffith told me in 1993. He returned to Broadway, earning another Tony nomination for the musical version of Destry Rides Again. Griffith admitted, though, the show wasn’t very good. So, he decided to do television. The pilot for The Andy Griffith Show, which also starred Ron Howard as his young son Opie, Frances Bavier as Aunt Bee and Don Knotts as the ultra-nervous deputy Barney Fife, aired on the popular The Danny Thomas Show. The show was quickly snapped up by CBS to develop into a series.

Knotts, who won five Emmys as Fife, wasn’t in the pilot. Knotts, who appeared with Griffith in NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS, called him and said, “Don’t you need a deputy?” “I was supposed to have been the comic, the funny one,” said Griffith. “It might not have lasted even half of season that way, but when Don came on, I realized by the second episode, he should be funny, and I should play straight to him. “

Despite the fact the series was the no. 1 show, Griffith wanted to stretch his acting muscles and the series ended in 1968. But Hollywood still didn’t know what to do with him. He signed a three-picture deal with Universal, but the first film ANGEL IN MY POCKET (’69) had a devil of a time trying to find an audience and the critics were not impressed. He struck out again and returned to the small screen. In between series work, TV movies and guest spots, Griffith appeared on the big screen, most notably in the sweet nostalgic comedy HEARTS OF THE WEST (’75) with Jeff Bridges and Alan Arkin.

He finally earned an Emmy nomination in 1981 for the TV movie MURDER IN TEXAS, in which he got the opportunity to show his dramatic chops as a wealthy Texan who thinks his daughter’s new husband isn’t exactly who he appears to be. His turn in Matlock gave him a renewed popularity. Griffith was doing guest spot on TV and had just released a hymns and spirituals CD when I interviewed him in 2005. Two years later, Griffith was perfectly cast in WAITRESS (2007) as Joe, the elderly and curmudgeonly owner of a small café who had a generous and kind heart. The role fit him like a comfortable glove.

Baby boomers felt they had lost a big part of their childhood when Griffith died in 2012 at the age of 86. Ron Howard summed up what so many of his fans were feeling: “His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations and shaped my life. I’m forever grateful. RIP Andy.”

The Men with Two Faces

When Frozen was released almost seven years ago, I fell in love with it and the love hasn’t stopped since, especially with the following of Frozen Fever, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and last year’s Frozen II. I am very proud to be in this fandom and have enjoyed expressing my love for it by writing analyses about them, and my friends and followers can rest assured I will never stop doing it, especially as long as there is more material for me to discuss! 😁😁😁

One of the reasons I fell in love with Frozen was because of Hans and the fact that he was a surprise villain. Disney introduced him by making us think he was another typical heroic prince: benevolent, noble, brave, caring, selfless, and kind. Hans tells Anna that he is the youngest of 13 sons from the kingdom of the Southern Isles, and in being the youngest, he has apparently faced ignorance, neglect, and abuse from most of his brothers, if not his entire family. But then in the third act, we discover that Disney had purposely misled all other characters, and even the audience, about who Hans really is. He reveals himself as a truly ruthless, sadistic, dishonest, power-hungry, selfish, two-faced sociopath whose only goal is to become king and gain the status, power, admiration, and respect he apparently never received from his family, and would never gain as the 13th heir of the Southern Isles. So he plotted to take control of Arendelle by marrying into the throne. He initially wanted to marry Elsa just because she was the oldest and rightful heir, which would give him a legitimate chance to become king. However, he decided to pursue and marry Anna when he realized that Elsa was an antisocial recluse, and planned to kill Elsa to get her out of the way and rise to power with him as king and Anna as his queen.

When I first saw Frozen, I was very shocked that Hans was the true villain, though at the same time, there were a few moments that made me suspicious of him. After seeing the film a few more times, I realized there were subtle clues of his villainy in many of his preceding scenes, so his villainous revelation did not come totally out of the blue. But Disney using the twist and idea of having a hidden main antagonist, one that was a prince, who is stereotypically a heroic character in fairy tales, no less, was something I very much enjoyed about Frozen because it was something so new, different, unexpected, and very unique, particularly for a Disney fairy tale.

When I saw Frozen II, I wasn’t expecting it to have a villain, hidden or not, since the trope of surprise villains by Disney, which started with Wreck-It Ralph, had been waning and it was getting easier for me to figure out who they were. Needless to say, when Runeard was revealed to be the film’s main antagonist, I was very shocked. I wasn’t shocked in the same way I was when Hans revealed himself to be an evil prince, but for different reasons. For one thing, Runeard only appears on screen as a living character during Agnarr’s story about the Enchanted Forest in the prologue, then as a snowy ice figure Elsa discovers in Ahtohallan years after his death. He has the shortest time on screen than any other villain in the Disney animated canon, yet Runeard also has a major effect on the film’s plot. He is one of the few Disney animated villains who affects the flow of the story from the very beginning, and is rather unique in doing so because he is a POSTHUMOUS main antagonist, the first one from Disney animation. In fact, Runeard is the Greater-Scope Villain of the Frozen franchise as his heinous actions against the Northuldrans not only led to the main events of Frozen II, but also to what became of his bloodline and what led to the events of Frozen. The fact that Runeard has such a short time on screen while simultaneously impacting so much to the story makes his actions even worse than those of Hans.

While the revelation of Runeard being the main villain has received mixed reception from fans and critics like that of Hans did, I can still focus more on the positive about the former’s villainy than the negative. Heck, when you look at both films and both of their main villains, Runeard and Hans actually have quite a lot in common, even though Runeard is far less developed as a character and has a much shorter amount of time on screen than Hans.

Both are monarchs who present themselves as kind, generous, noble, charismatic, benevolent people to the public, while in private, they reveal that are really nothing but cold, obsessive, ruthless, sadistic, two-faced men who are successful in concealing their true dark natures in order to gain the trust of others for their own selfish interests and benefits. In fact, when they make their first appearances in their respective movies, Hans and Runeard wear their benevolent masks when they meet with people, and both are wearing gloves as they do so.

Both prove themselves to be very competent rulers of Arendelle (though Runeard was a true king of Arendelle while Hans briefly acted as its reigning monarch in both Elsa and Anna’s absence), and are kind and generous towards the people of whom they are in charge. In truth, however, both they are very power-hungry individuals who do not care for anything except the power they have/crave, and are willing to do whatever it takes, including treachery and murder, to get what they want and expand their power.

Both have brief scenes in which they reveal their true colors to a single person and sadistically smile as they explain how the plans they have set in motion will be carried out and satisfy their ruthless, selfish desires. The difference between them is that Hans reveals his secret to Anna as he indirectly attempts to murder her, while Runeard reveals his secret to his second-in-command and doesn’t try to murder him (though he apparently instilled fear into the officer and swore him to secrecy over the true purpose of the dam’s construction).

Both plan to kill people who they see as being in their way and a threat to their goals. They sneak up on their victims when they (the victims) are seated on the ground (Hans on Elsa, Runeard on the Northuldra leader) and raise their swords over the victims’ heads, ready to murder them. As I said in “Striking Resemblances”, the difference between both moments is that while Hans failed to kill Elsa due to Anna’s intervention, Runeard succeeded in killing the Northuldra leader because no one else was around to witness and intervene.

And while it’s not part of their characters and actions within the movies, both mens’ true natures were kept a complete secret from viewers prior to the release dates of their respective films, especially during promotional material. Hans was labeled as “The Nice Guy” in the first theatrical trailer for Frozen, while Runeard was completely omitted from pre-release storybook merchandise, and Jeremy Sisto was revealed as the voice of the character for the first time at the world premiere of Frozen II.

The fact that Runeard killed the leader of the Northuldra while Hans didn’t kill Elsa suggests that Runeard is potentially a darker example of what Hans could have easily become if he had succeeded in his goal to kill both sisters and become king of Arendelle. But in the months since Frozen II came out, another possibility on how Runeard is suggested to be a darker reflection of Hans, with the former having succeeded in the past where Hans failed in the present, has been suggested by fans. As I’ve said before, Runeard was the founder and first king of Arendelle. Prior to this accomplishment, perhaps like Hans, he was once a prince who was overlooked and neglected by his family, and he craved power, respect, and admiration after having never received them from his family and/or the majority of his kingdom. Or perhaps Runeard was just a commoner, a poor nobody who still craved power and respect after never having received it, or even anything fine and desirable, in his life...and he ended up getting what he wanted when he created his very own kingdom and was proclaimed its king. AND when he became king, Runeard was set on expanding as well as protecting his power, with his only concern being his own status as a monarch.

Runeard and Hans both have underdeveloped backstories as villains and what makes them as such, even though it feels easier to figure out that of Hans based on what he does reveal to Anna. But considering how much they do have in common, perhaps Runeard WAS once in the same position Hans used to be, and he managed to succeed where Hans did not. With all we do know about them, though, Runeard appears to be far more evil and despicable than Hans, given his bigoted, judgmental, paranoid, hateful behavior towards the Northuldra and the magical spirits and his actions against them.

Hans briefly gets his chance of being a leader when he takes over as temporary ruler of Arendelle in both Elsa and Anna’s absence. He successfully wins the hearts of the Arendellians by acting as a kind, caring, benevolent ruler during the harsh conditions brought on by Elsa’s magical winter. The fact that he earned the trust and respect of the Arendellians and acts very competent as a ruler suggests that Hans really could have been a very good king. However, as I said in “Tyrant Terror”, while Runeard was revealed to be a ruthless, power-hungry, obsessive king in secret, he used the same kind of benevolent mask that Hans used when he appeared in public. Runeard apparently was also very competent as a ruler since he knew how to run the kingdom while pretending to be a noble leader to the public. He led the citizens, the guards, and the castle staff on to believe that his kind facade was his true nature.

Because getting power and respect for himself was all that both men ever really cared about, I have absolutely no doubt that, had he succeeded in stealing Arendelle’s throne, Hans also would have become the same kind of secretly ruthless, power-hungry, selfish tyrant that Runeard was before him.

Now the biggest difference between Hans and Runeard’s villainy is what motivates them to carry out their evil plans. Runeard seeks to destroy the Northuldra because they have ties to magic, something he detests, fears, and towards which he holds bigotry, since he believes it to be a threat to his royal rank and authority. The fact that the Northuldra are peasants who follow magic rather than a government ruled by a king is also how Runeard saw them as a threat. He presumably believed that the Northuldra might try to use their magic to one day plot to usurp him and take over his kingdom. Consumed by his hateful, bigoted, and paranoid feelings towards the tribe and their magic, Runeard decided to destroy them to prevent any chances of them trying to destroy him first.

In Hans’s case, he obviously viewed Elsa as a threat to his plans since she was the legitimate heir of Arendelle, and he plotted to kill her to get her out of his way. When Elsa accidentally revealed her powers and caused the eternal winter, Hans was just as shocked as everyone else. However, while his motive to kill Elsa expanded so that he also wanted restore summer to Arendelle (and appear to be a hero in the eyes of the Arendellians for doing so), Hans was always presumably indifferent to Elsa’s powers. Throughout the whole movie, he never once shows any true feelings of prejudice towards magic or fear that her magic makes Elsa so powerful that she is a greater threat to his goal of taking over her kingdom than he initially believed. The best example of this is when he reveals his true nature and plans to Anna, who says “You’re no match for Elsa!” and Hans callously retorts “No, you’re no match for Elsa!” Hans knows that Anna means that Elsa is more powerful than him with her magic and she could use them to bring him down, but Hans is completely unconcerned and unconvinced about this concept. If anything, by this time, he has realized that Elsa was scared of her own power and of losing Anna...and he knew how to use both of her fears against her.

So unlike Runeard’s fear of magic being his overall motivation to destroy the Northuldra, I don’t believe Hans ever feared or was prejudiced towards Elsa for being magical. He only wanted to kill her just because she was in his way of gaining access to Arendelle’s throne.

As with any Disney villain, though, in the end, Hans and Runeard’s confidence and arrogance ends up being their downfall, and they end up being forever ruined due to their actions. Hans extinguishes all heat sources in the library, then locks Anna in so she will die from her frozen heart. But because Olaf helps her escape the castle, Anna intervenes in the nick of time when Hans attempts to kill Elsa. After the winter is lifted, Hans is humiliated and defeated when Anna reveals that she survived, and many witness the punch she gives him to his face. Hans is then apprehended, imprisoned on a French ship headed back to the Southern Isles, and banished from Arendelle forever. He is later shown working in the royal stables in his kingdom, cleaning up after the horses.

Though he makes no further appearances in the franchise, Hans’s betrayal has undoubtedly ruined him forever and he will probably never be allowed to leave his kingdom in order to try his plot all over again. Furthermore, the allusions to and mentions of him in the sequel shows that he will never be forgiven by Elsa, Anna, and their family.

Despite having succeeded in murdering the tribe leader, the war that Runeard instigates leads to him falling off a cliff to his death and causing the angered spirits to cast a mist over the Enchanted Forest, trapping the people, including his surviving soldiers, in it for decades. Though he is long dead by the time the main events of the story take place, what remains of Runeard’s evil reign is finally brought to an end when Anna and Elsa destroy the dam. This act lifts the mist and frees the Forest, and a true union of peace is at last established between Arendelle and the Northuldra.

In life, Runeard had been desperate to protect his power, status, and legacy from being ruined by the Northuldra and their magic. But in great irony, his misdeeds caused his own fear to become reality (though not like he had envisioned), and his legacy is now forever ruined by his betrayal.

Red Cross & Donations during Emergencies

You’re probably going to see a surge in posts about why you should not support Agencies like the American Red Cross because “they refused our donations” or "they steal donations" etc. so please read this first before posting anti-ARC/Non-Profit/etc groups mostly run by volunteers.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE REBLOGGING NEGATIVE STUFF ABOUT THOSE GROUPS!!

Okay, let's talk about this. Food stuff first, then clothes, then a list of Things You Can Do.

Pay attention, people, because while our actions during events like Hurricanes or other events can save lives, our half-cocked reblogging of emotional anecdotes can make lives that much harder. I am not going to claim that the Red Cross (or any other similar Organization) are perfect or unproblematic, but I will say that it is better to light a candle than to refuse to provide batteries for a flashlight. Provide the names of groups you are donating to and the PayPal or site where those groups are accepting monetary donations, don't just fill timelines with anti-Whomever stuff without providing alternatives. Moving on to the Big Questions.....

WHY DO THEY REFUSE FOOD?

— Food can be dangerous.

Think about it. Kids have nut allergies, people are lactose intolerant, the dish could have been sitting somewhere for hours growing bacteria....

— Food can be divisive.

Think about it. Who gets the fantastic homemade lasagna and who has to be content with a bag lunch? Who makes that decision? What about areas populated by people with religious dietary restrictions? Are the items kosher or halal or vegetarian? Worse yet, could someone donate items to locations having high numbers of immigrants, people of color, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, LGBTQ, etc. that were made with the intent to harm groups of people?

Do you see how all of this could be a problem?

It is simply too much of a risk to trust that every person who cooks something followed all safety guidelines regarding ingredients, can provide accurate lists of ALL the ingredients (and no, not just "1/2 cup vegetable oil", because there could be differences between brands, someone may use olive oil or canola oil exclusively, or simply not think to mention that while they made the dish with ABC Brand 100% Canola, they sprayed the casserole pan with Pam or greased it with XYZ Brand Margarine) AND would leave their name & contact info in case people get ill from eating their food.

Businesses like restaurants have to follow certain guidelines and accept the risks, but private individuals? Not so much. Too many shelters/distribution locations simply don't have the fridges/freezers needed to store perishable foods for the number of people they are trying to help and are using what space they do have to store things like breast milk, formula, insulin, etc. Some shelters/locations are in places that face loss of electricity, disruption of utilities, you name it. They may or may not have generators. They may or may not have the resources to plate & provide utensils to every person. They may or may not have dishwashers or just several large sinks to clean dishes, and they can't just shove dirty dishes into a corner for people to come retrieve. Even if they do have sinks, they probably don't have the manpower to assign toward labeling dishes, storing them, reheating them, serving them and cleaning dishes/kitchen/etc to avoid contaminating other food.

Hate to bring this up, but it should be mentioned that many of those places also lack the bathroom facilities to handle the influx of victims, so a few dozen people coming down with salmonella (which, fun fact, can be spread by touching items which were touched by an infected person who wasn't as diligent as they could have been while washing their hands) or other common ailments caused by eating undercooked, poorly preserved or cross-contaminated items, especially in situations where clean water could be in short supply ...well. I think you can imagine how that would be an issue.

WHY DO THEY REFUSE CLOTHING?

— Clothing uses a lot of resources.

Think about it and you'll see similar problems to the ones regarding food. Some people are allergic to certain detergents, break into rashes when encountering pet dander or have other sensitivities.

— Like food, safety is a concern.

A lot of the clothing donated to shelters/organizations is nowhere close to new or in the ballpark of used: it skips directly to awful and most of it isn't laundered. Claims that all the items have been laundered doesn't change the fact that it has to be laundered again before it can be given to anyone due to the aforementioned issues. If possible, donate new, packaged unisex things like t-shirts. Leave the fancy stuff, out-of-season stuff and dress clothing at home unless you're told they are looking to collect heels, thick sweaters, ties, etc.

Laundering aside, the condition of items can be unbelievable. Pants with broken zippers or large holes in the crotch/butt, single socks, old promotional shirts covered in stains and holes, tops & bottoms stretched out or with blown seams. Soiled clothing (every kind of thing you can imagine), scuffed up individual high heels, bras with wires poking through other items, old prom dresses spilling sequins everywhere and all of this is shoved in garbage bags or boxes willy-nilly along with other random items....it is astounding what people will drop off with an attitude of "it's better than nothing" while failing to realize that all of those bags and boxes have to be sorted, laundered, grouped (child/adult, then sizes), then distributed. This is all worse than nothing and only eats up resources better spent on getting people help they actually need.

Again, many shelters/locations have a limited amount of resources and storage space. They may or may not have access to laundry machines. They may or may not have rooms to set up for sorting, nor space to keep the items for any amount of time. The volunteer hours spent digging through clothing hardly good enough for a rag bag would be much better spent on other tasks that can improve the lives of people impacted by these disasters.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

If you want to provide food or clothing for people but don't want to donate money to the Red Cross/Other Large Organizations, here are some suggestions :

*** First, ALWAYS make sure to contact locations/groups and LISTEN when they tell you what they need! ***

FOOD:

* See if any restaurants are looking for volunteers to help prepare or deliver meals.

* Ask groups you're already involved with to host a shop-along to supply people returning to their homes with staple groceries. [Even if homes were not flooded or damaged, power outages could cause a total loss of all products in refrigerators and the majority of people who rent apartments do not have any type of insurance policy that pays to replace food.]

* Ask if specific items like bottles, sippy cups or reusable water bottles are needed, or if the location could use a reliable fridge/mini-fridge for storing insulin or breast milk, or offer up a hot plates or electric kettle that can be used to to boil water or prepare small amounts of food for ppl with special diets.

* Get with schools that have teaching kitchens (think Home Ec) and offer to help cook or buy supplies for use: this could provide parents who need a bit of time to check their property or fill out paperwork with that time while providing their child with an activity that results in cookies. Offer to do the same thing with entire families through the schools in the evenings, because a few hours away from a shelter, a hot meal and a bit of privacy can mean so much in times like these.

CLOTHING:

* If a group says they are accepting clothing, please only donate items without damage, without stains and make sure to ask if the location needs clothes hangers, special kind of detergents, mesh laundry bags for distribution, etc. If you have large-load capacity machines, offer use of them if you're close to the shelter or can lend them for a brief time.

* Most groups will ask you to only donate underwear and socks that are new and still in their packaging. Most groups don't receive new underwear and socks in packaging and I don't know of any group that will distribute used underwear or socks, so please think about providing child & adult sizes of those items.

* Consider a group effort to help specific groups of people: gather up gently used business/business casual attire for young adults seeking new jobs or returning to work; maternity clothing for all stages of pregnancy; or look into providing steel-toe boots, work gloves, jackets and safety vests for people involved in cleanup efforts.

* Look into sponsoring a future family event that was delayed by the emergency. Provide a dress and suits for a wedding, pairs of cleats for a soccer team, changes of school uniforms or go the services route by offering your own skills as a photographer, hairdresser, tailor, whatever, for free (or form a group that can provide several interconnected skills to work together over, say, 6 months-1 year post event for free or discounted for X amount of events) or at cost/discount.

* Ask groups if they need fabric or findings for arts & crafts and offer to bring items ready to go: bags of buttons, t-shirts cut into yarn, denim or other fabrics cut into sizes requested, etc. You'll be able to thin out your closet and provide a useful thing that can be used to craft a handy item or teach a new skill. This also applies to other art supplies & school supplies, as children in shelters aren't attending school and/or need an outlet for their feelings.

MISC:

** Masks, shower curtains, hygiene prpdicts: having mass shelter happening during this covid-19 breakout is a triple nightmare, so if you sew masks or have extra masks in any size offer them to the mass shelters.

* Different groups of people have different needs. Groups having more children may need more baby wipes or diapers ; groups having more seniors may need mobility aids ; groups having people with natural hair may need different shampoo ; groups having more autistic or special needs may need sense-friendly items, and so on. Help is “one size fits most” deal in many areas of care (like shelter, food) but there are many individuals who need something specific. Ask, listen, provide.

* Groups are almost always in need of translators, not just for adults & help with paperwork or other concerns, but to watch, entertain or otherwise provide assistance for children. If you are fluent in another language (or have books/movies in different languages) contact agencies and let them know.

* We rely on cellphones & electronic devices for much of our communication, so chargers, charger cords, battery banks, working phones and even laptops could help people find their families. Mobile wi-fi and pre-paid phone cards are things to consider, too. Battery or plug-in speakers with Bluetooth could be used for storytime or dance activities with children or audio books for adults, basically any extra electronics you have that are

fairly modern and can play video/audio would be a godsend. Older phones that have been factory reset while still able to work on modern system could help greatly, so call/check with providers and see if any older models you have will still connect & if they are doing anything with the phones themselves re: redistribution.

* Totes, backpacks, duffels and other reusable, durable bags can come in handy. Ziplocs too, to keep items dry. Often people only stay at a shelter for a few days while they're working on other arrangements so it's nice to have everything packed and secure as well as offer a bit of pride and normality rather than making everyone use hefty bags to carry their stuff.

* If you are a notary public or someone with special knowledge pertaining to documents, mortgages, bank accounts, medical POA, etc call and see if your services could be handy for people. A lot of victims lose their birth certificates and other important documents and will need help reestablishing their identity and proofs of ownership.

Most importantly, please make sure people you know understand that there are ways for everyone to help! There are reasons why certain things are not accepted, and it is frustrating, but keep in mind there are other ways to give. Right now, focus on ways you can help and encourage people you know to join your efforts. Please focus on what we can do to help!!

The Truth About Water Filters

Next time when a young person asks what kind of adult you are, please say something like this: “Suddenly, you are worried that the water filter is dirty, you chose the wrong water filter, or you need to replace the water filter, but you don’t remember Where is it. This book tells you how to do it. You don’t remember where to put the replacement water filter, so you press the reset button and you will worry about it again a few months later.”

Most people have a good chance of having some kind of water filter in their homes, but this seemingly simple devices-they just filter water, right? -very complicated. There are many legal questions about water filters. You should ask them if you want to ensure the health of the whole family. Do you really need to use a water filter? Are they worth spending such crazy money? Do you really need to replace them? Do they really make your drinking water safer?

This is an interesting trivia-the water filter is not a modern invention.

According to Lenntech Water Treatment Solutions, the foundation of water purification can be traced back to 2,000 BC. Records from ancient Greece, Egypt, and India indicate that they knew the importance of clean water and usually boiled and filtered it through sand or gravel. In 500 BC, Hippocrates developed a water filter that we recognized. He called it the Hippocratic Sleeve, which is essentially a cloth bag into which water can be poured to filter out sediment.

Rome built a huge aqueduct and infrastructure system, but the fall of Rome destroyed most of them and left many things on hold. It was not until 1627 that Sir Francis Bacon tried to filter out salt from the water through sand.

By the 1700s, some houses were using filters made of sponge, charcoal, and wool. It was not until Scotland built the first water treatment plant in 1804 that filtration began on a municipal scale. In 1854, the cholera epidemic swept through London and found that even if the water seemed safe to drink, it was not necessarily clean. Australia’s water filter company said that Queen Victoria really increased the visibility of household water filters, especially the pottery forms made by Royal Dalton. The carbon filter came out in 1862, and all that is left is to perfect the ideas that people have worked on for hundreds of years.

There are several different filters, but most filters follow the same general principles. According to Explain That Stuff, most filters have two parts that work together to remove impurities from the water. First, there is a physical part-water is filtered through a fine mesh, which usually handles larger impurities.

Another method is chemical filtration, which sounds similar at first glance. However, here, water will flow through something (such as activated carbon), where a chemical reaction will occur, causing impurities to be pulled out of the water and into the filter.

Frigidaire said the activated carbon filter is the most common filter used in households. That’s because it has the best of both worlds. Larger particles will be captured on the surface of the charcoal, and the carbon will absorb some other unwanted pollutants in the water, especially lead and volatile organic compounds or VOCs. Then, a chemical reaction also took place here, and it was this kind of reaction that helped to remove the chlorine in the water.

This is a simple question: Why do you think most people choose to install a water filter in their house or choose a water filter?

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the most common reasons people start researching filters is that they don’t like the taste of water. Sometimes, when you drink tap water, you are tasting chemicals that make it safe. It started with ‘The Joker’. I got interested in WASP!Gordon and decided to explore his side of the story. Then PLOT happened. Now I have no idea what is going on.

A glass of ice and amber liquid landed in front of him with a solid thunk on the woodwork. His eldest brother followed it, his tall figure sliding around the table and taking a seat beside him.

Another glass of alcohol sat in his hand.

Scott didn’t say anything at first, apparently quite happy to nurse the drink against his chest.

Breath whistled through his teeth. “So, what happened?”

Gordon arched an eyebrow before picking up his glass and sipping the whisky. Oooh, Scott’s expensive bottle. Nice.

He took a moment to revel in its warmth before venturing into the bitterness of his report.

“He did well, you know. Put up one hell of a fight. A couple of those guys won’t be getting up any time soon.”

Blue eyes peered at him over the rim of his glass. “Virgil?”

“Kayo taught him well.” A swallow of scorching liquid, smooth as the glass holding it. “There were just too many of them.”

A ramshackle pile of a building on an abandoned farm with interference peppering the sensors. It was ironic that Virgil had accompanied him for security. AKA big brother hadn’t wanted him to go into an unknown situation without backup.

Whether the outcome would have changed in accordance with that decision, they would never know, but it led to Gordon taking lead and Virgil following. Consequently, it was Gordon who was nabbed first entering the second dusty room of the building and Virgil who had to exercise his self-defence skills.

The hands that grabbed the aquanaut were rough and for a moment the whole room went sideways. He struck out automatically, but was anticipated, his arm wrenched around his back, his knees kicked out under him, and a cold barrel shoved into the base of his skull put a very abrupt end to his defences.

“V-!”

The kick to his ribs silenced him, but his aim had been achieved.

The brother entering the room, froze for just a split second as he processed the situation. Shadows leapt from the darkness, intending on taking him down, but that second, and reflexes drilled into Virgil by his sister, gave him the power to respond.

Virgil’s massive arm swiped away the hands grabbing at him as he spun out of reach. Another shadow leapt out only to encounter an equally massive fist to its face. Virgil’s uniform did its job and protected him from impact, a hard traction boot landing solidly in one man’s guts. A padded elbow hit teeth and those huge gloved hands, usually so gentle, made knuckles as solid as steel - Gordon knew that, one slip on his part in one too many spar sessions had ended in bruises Virgil had apologised for weeks afterwards.

But there were too many, up to half a dozen assailants emerging from the shadows not including those holding Gordon.

The cold ring of metal at the base of his skull dug in deeper as he struggled to free himself and stop the inevitable.

No amount of padding could deflect the bar of steel that shone in the dark and impacted on his brother’s ribs.

Gordon heard the snap.

Oh god.

Virgil gasped and staggered. His assailants moved in.

But no, the stubborn bastard didn’t give up. His fist impacted the side of a head and a man ended up in the dust at Virgil’s feet.

But there were too many.

Too many.

“Virgil, no!” They must be getting some pleasure out of this, because there were guns a plenty, but only one deployed. Gordon didn’t know if his brother had even seen them. “Virgil!”

That steel bar flickered in the poor light and the second time it impacted on his brother, the dull thud was skull bone.

His big brother dropped without a sound.

Dust hung in the air.

“Well, so much for that.” The hot breath on the back of his neck almost overrode the chill of seeing a gun trained on Virgil’s bleeding skull. “Now, time is of the essence. I need access to your ship now, or we will finish him permanently.”

“They got me first. Virg was behind me and had that extra second to react. It was unexpected.” It had been well planned. “They...neutralised him.”

He took a swig of his drink and it caught part way down, burning a hole in his throat. “You would have been so proud of him.” It was whispered.

“I am. Of both of you.” A simple statement that said so much.

Gordon rolled his shoulders in an attempt to shake off the echoes of the incident so he could report clearly.

He was only moderately successful.

“They used Virg to get me to do what they wanted.” The words stuck in his throat and he forced steel into his spine, straightening in the chair. The image of his brother discarded and bleeding on Two’s checker-plate decking, a gun pointed at his head.

The soft crack as a boot impacted on his already damaged ribcage.

Gordon didn’t flinch. He was too experienced for that. But it didn’t hurt any less.

Another throat full of burning alcohol attempted to wash the chill away. Maybe he was just out of practise.

“We need to find a way to stop that from happening again.” His voice was parched and he found himself staring off into the distance.

“Kayo’s on it.” The tumbler was lifted from his hand. The clink of glass, the glug of pouring liquid and it reappeared full again.

Gordon took it, an eye flick his only thank you.

“I flew her to the warehouse. Virgil remained unconscious for the entire flight.” Gordon was almost thankful. “I had hoped you would be able to track us.”

It was Scott’s turn to sigh. “John was...upset.”

That snapped him out of his daze. “What?” His eyes narrowed. “What did Johnny do?”

Scott shifted where he sat. “When he lost Thunderbird Two and both your signals, he and Eos went to some lengths to find you.”

Gordon sat up straighter. “What did he do?”

“Between him and Eos, they hacked every telecommunications network in Texas...including the GDF, CIA, FBI, and the World Council.”

“Shit. Did they catch him?”

A snort. “Are you kidding me? No. Though Aunt Val has suspicions. Eos got angry at one point and let loose a virus deleting every occurrence of the word ‘intelligence’ in the GDF network.”

Gordon stared at him. “Why?”

“She found something.”

“What?” Was Scott being suspenseful for a reason?

“They knew, Gordon.”

“Knew what?” For god’s sake.

“They knew there would be an attempt on Thunderbird Two.”

It was cold fury, nasty and acidic. It leeched into his bones and swirled in his brain. As each action taken against Virgil, he lined up his opponents in his head, catalogued and assessed. There was fear, but he had no time for it.

“What do you want?” He was yanked down a corridor by one restrained arm. He had asked that question multiple times already. Again, he received as much a response as he had before.

Nothing.

The leader of the group was dressed in army fatigues, but had no identifying insignia or rank other than a simple red slash of a crisscross on one arm. It had been painted on with a brush.

Gordon stored it for later analysis.

But for the present, he was keeping track of exactly where he and his brother were being taken.

Unlike the building they had been captured in, this one was modern, clean and far from a dark, sinister lair. Endless corridors of beige and linoleum.

He memorised their route from Thunderbird Two taking note of as much as possible.

He had landed the giant cargo plane on a private runway and taxied her into a massive hangar. The impression that this had all been planned ahead became stronger. After all, Two wasn’t little. It wasn’t as if she could be stashed in some thief’s backyard.

Virgil was a mass of bruises, each welt a threat to get Gordon to do what they wanted. His heart ached for his big brother, still unconscious and being dragged alongside Gordon between two men.

Until he wasn’t.

“Where are you taking him?”

Again, he received no response other than having both his arms wrenched tighter behind his back. His shoulders creaked.

He didn’t give them the satisfaction of groaning.

Dragged down the hallway, he felt the distance grow between him and his brother.

And with that, he just got colder and colder.

By the time they punched an electronic lock and shoved him into room, he was little more than ice.

The man holding him spun him around. Grey eyes meeting his.

Ice met ice.

He didn’t say anything, but the intent was clear. We have your brother. Do anything and he dies.

We’ll see about that.

The man spun and left, taking his lacky with him.

Gordon was left restrained, in a room with a single bed and not much else, glaring at a locked door.

“They knew?” Gordon stared at his brother. “What did they know?”

Scott pulled out his phone, prodded it and handed it over to Gordon.

The aquanaut stared at the words on the screen. It was a report detailing a new terrorist group. The GDF had labelled them ‘Null’ in accordance with the symbol they assigned themselves.

A red hand-painted cross was splattered across the page. Gordon’s lips tightened.

The intelligence reported was sketchy, but the impression was a vendetta against International Rescue, the Hood and the Chaos Crew. A single statement, ‘We will end the war’, was attached to the document.

“Shit.” It came out in a breathless rush.

The document went on to theorise that the founder or founders of the group had suffered at the hands of the Chaos Crew and consequently had a vendetta against both sides of the equation.

“Why didn’t they tell us?” Gordon stared at the phone, a number of emotions roiling in his gut.

Out the corner of his eye, Scott sculled the last of his drink and dropped his tumbler onto the table. “Bait.” An exhalation. “You were bait.”

“Bait?” Gordon stared at his brother. “You’re kidding me.”

“No. I’m not.” Blue eyes were so cold, they hurt. “Eos dug up the command sequence. They didn’t know where the group was holed up, so they were waiting for them to strike next. We were the logical target as we are the easiest to find and lure.”

“Fuck.” It burst out of him in an explosion of hot air and he shot from his seat, storming out onto the balcony. His nerves itched under his skin. The images of his injured brother danced in his head.

The wind leapt off the Island and wrapped itself around him as if in reassurance, but he was not ready to receive it.

Scott walked up calmly and stood beside him.

“Did she know?” There was no need to mention who Gordon was talking about.

“She did.”

“And she didn’t tell us.”

“No, she didn’t.”

“Does she know, we know?”

“No, but as I said, she has suspicions.”

“Does she know what happened to Virgil?”

Scott didn’t answer immediately. “Yes.”

“Tell me it was worth it.”

“The GDF did not succeed in capturing any of them.”

Again, Gordon found himself staring at his brother. “None? Not even those I took out?”

“None.”

“Fuck.” But this time it was a defeated exhale and Gordon closed his eyes, his hand rubbing his face. “What are we going to do?”

Beside him, Scott straightened into the sharp, commanding military man he was. “What we always do.” Blue eyes turned to focus on him. “Save people.”

And Gordon got the message. That blue gaze locked onto him, his brother’s military bearing, straight and strong.

They saved people.

And they would save themselves.

It took him an annoying amount of time, but he slipped his bonds. It helped he kept a tiny pocket knife strapped into the inside of his right boot. He would have taken that one as a credit to his military past, but honestly, it was the result of an incident several years ago that saw him snagged underwater and Virgil having to dive in and untangle him. The nagging about being prepared after that had been intolerable. The tiny penknife had been handed to him late one night with worry in those brown eyes.

Kind of ironic that now it would be helping to save that same brother.

They had taken his baldric and rebreather while they were still aboard Thunderbird Two. He would give these guys credit. They were far from stupid. No monologuing, no explanations, just purpose.

He had no idea what that purpose was other than to capture Two and torture his brother as leverage.

Yeah, well, Gordon had a purpose, too.

Get out of this room, get his brother and his ‘bird, and get the hell out of here.

Tools at hand...penknife, metal bed and associated mattress. He looked up...light globe. His eyes tracked a conduit leading from the bare bulb across the ceiling and down the wall, disappearing into the doorframe.

Exposed wiring.

He slipped up to the door, a hand touching the smooth and cold metal surface. A moment to listen for movement beyond. These guys were smart, he was pretty sure there would be a guard or two outside his door.

No sound to confirm anything.

Nor was there a lock on this side of the door, the electronic lock was outside for security reasons no doubt. But in any case, there was no way for him to see out the door or what was on the other side.

His lips thinned.

Wasn’t going to stop him.

He reached for the plastic conduit beside the door and, shoving his penknife under the sheath, pulled off the plastic channel keeping it snug against the wall.

Perfect.

He let his mouth slip into a lopsided smirk.

It took a while and aching fingertips, but he could feel his big brother over his shoulder congratulating him on his skill. Virgil was going to love this story.

Assuming it had a happy ending.

He ripped the electric cables from their mountings on the wall. It took him some time because he had to do it with minimal sound. At one or two points, he thought he had blown it as a c-clamp clattered and bounced on the concrete floor, but there was no response.

That metal door must be thick.

Some re-purposed plastic conduit to hold the cables and a little extra protection for his hands and penknife and he cut the wires one by one.

The room fell dark.

Gordon stood ready, expecting someone to burst in at the change in lighting, but instead a thin band of light from outside shone under the door.

A shadow moved across that band of light, but the door did not open.

No sound.

Exhale.

He only had one shot at this.

He touched the bared wires to the metal door.

The darkness sparked and the door sighed open just a little as the lock died an electronic death.

A sliver of light landed on his blue uniform.

A pair of dark eyes, surrounded by khaki, met his.

A gun came up.

Gordon moved.

He was out the door and the gun was flying across the corridor in a blur of motion. A mixture of WASP and Kayo took the man down, a final punch to the face sending him into oblivion.

A breath and he dragged his victim into the now dark room. A moment of consideration of the value of anonymity, and he stripped the man of his jacket and pants, trying not to cringe when he shoved them over his uniform. His blue boots would have to stay. Fortunately, or not, the pants were a little long and hid them for the most part.

But move. Time to move.

A quick glance into the corridor and he darted through the door, closing it behind him.

Hurried, but silent steps and he retraced the path that had led him here. Around that corner he had last seen his brother disappear into, ears alert, eyes tracking, body ready.

A man exited a door in front of him and Gordon reacted on instinct. Another body shoved behind another door.

The corridor ended in a T-intersection.

Left or right?

Listen.

“Gordon Tracy is a simple man.”

The words were distant and slurred, but his heart lifted. Virgil.

Left.

“I once lost him in the bath.”

Gordon didn’t spare a smile for that memory, though it was a good one. He only had eyes for the man standing in front of the door at the end of the corridor.

Fortunately, it was a short corridor.

Okay, Gordo, you gotta play this one right.

He straightened up, checked his shirt to make sure his blue uniform was hidden by khaki.

Walk with purpose and no-one will question your presence.

To the sound of his brother’s pained voice, he strode down that corridor as sure in his right to be there as he was sure he was going to go through that door.

The guard looked up in question and Gordon caught his eye. A small smile as his brother spoke about jokes and his darkest days.

The guard returned his smile.

The moment he was within reach, Gordon wiped it off his face.

He caught the unconscious man before he could hit the floor and stashed him to one side.

Virgil’s voice slurred on.

“He has seen the glassiness of death and faced down the reaper himself.”

The reason why he could hear Virgil so clearly became apparent as he realised the door was ajar.

Sloppy.

To his advantage, pushing it ever so slowly open, he peered in.

The room was dark except for a spotlight in the centre. Virgil was strapped to a chair and it appeared that was all that was holding him upright. Blood from his head wound dripped sluggishly down one side of his face. He listed sideways, eyes glazed, his words slurred but inevitable.

Gordon swore silently, his fists clenching. His brother had been drugged. What the hell did these people want?

A single interrogator was in the room, his back to the door.

From sloppy to convenient.

Gordon let himself silently into the room.

“The itching powder on the bath towel.

“The hell let loose on April Fool’s Day every damn year.

“They are but a symptom of the man you are facing, and yet so why you are going to regret what you are doing.” Virgil’s eyes were foggy, but the determination was clear and shot across the room at his tormentor.

Blood dripped from his brother’s lip.

And Gordon stepped into the light.

Amazon announced it would freeze non-essential FBA shipments from its third-party sellers. In addition, it has started to prioritize essential goods over non-essentials.

Amazon considers the following product categories essential:

Baby

Health & Household

Beauty & Personal Care (including personal care appliances)

Grocery

Industrial & Scientific

Pet Supplies

If a seller’s products are outside of those categories, they will not be able to send shipments to Amazon’s fulfillment centers nor create an inventory replenishment order.

However, these changes are temporary.

Amazon stated that the freeze on receiving non-essential goods would only last until April 5. And sellers whose products are already in Amazon’s fulfillment centers — or are on the way to the fulfillment centers — will still have their products enter the supply chain.

However, while Amazon has not yet made an official announcement, the freeze is still in effect. I tried to create a shipping order for one of my products on April 6 and received a message saying Amazon’s fulfillment centers aren’t accepting inbound shipments of non-essential items.

Currently, there are no restrictions for merchants who fulfill their own products (FBM). Therefore, it is still possible for sellers who currently sell via FBA to make sales and ship their goods to customers themselves.

Amazon announced that the Italian and French marketplaces would only ship essential goods to consumers. However, as of this writing, there is no word when this restriction will lift. (Not only could this move affect the seller’s business, but may leave them without a stream of income during these trying times; 22% of active sellers in the French marketplace and 23% of active sellers in the Italian have no other income than their Amazon business.)

Amazon further announced that Amazon India (amazon.in) would only ship essential goods to consumers following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that India would enter a 21-day lockdown.

In addition, TameBay reports that non-essential goods in the Amazon UK (amazon.co.uk) marketplace are taking as long as 3-4 weeks to ship. And in the US marketplace, the sellers’ ability to create coupons is temporarily suspended until April 5.

we received word that Amazon would offer the following benefits to help sellers during the COVID-19 outbreak:

It states that “In light of the evolving COVID-19 crisis, we will waive two weeks of your inventory storage fees for products stored in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic.”

This is in addition to the previously announced updates including:

Waiving the April 15 long-term storage fees for inventory stored in the U.S. and Europe.

Pausing repayments and interest until April 30 for sellers with direct loans from Amazon Lending.

Waiving April fees for those using Seller Account Management or the Launchpad program.”

Furthermore, Amazon said it would be taking measures to mitigate the impact of the crisis on sellers’ account health.

We’ve also heard through some of our contacts in China that Amazon is already prepping sellers for the 2020 Prime Day season which should happen may happen in August.

Finally, some sellers have noticed that Amazon has changed their Buy Box algorithm to award the Buy Box to FBM sellers. However, Amazon has not offered an official statement regarding this change.

Amazon informed sellers that it would be prioritizing the supply of key medical supplies to hospitals and government organizations.

In a message to sellers on their forums, Amazon had this to say:

“You may have offers on one or more products (ASINs) that will now be available exclusively to hospitals and government organizations, which are in urgent need of high-demand medical products like N95 masks, surgical masks, facial shields, surgical gowns, surgical gloves, and large-volume sanitizers. Select ASINs of these product types will no longer be available to the broader public on Amazon.com and AmazonBusiness.com.

“For ASINs subject to this change, we have eliminated our standard referral fees through June 30, 2020, to encourage our selling partners to make additional inventory of these products available at competitive prices to these customers with the greatest need.

Amazon announced plans to hire an additional 75,000 employees, on top of the 100,000 previously announced, to continue supporting demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

2. The global supply chain has been disrupted

China, the primary supplier for many Amazon sellers’ goods, was ground zero for the coronavirus outbreak. And China’s normally thriving import industry has felt the strain of COVID-19 already.

Even before the crisis hit the U.S., a recent Jungle Scout survey of 681 of Amazon sellers who sourced their products from China revealed:

36% sellers seeing declining sales

11% sellers raising prices on products

50% sellers looking to source products outside of China

Some sellers are looking to the U.S., India, Vietnam, and Mexico, among other countries, to source their products, though it’s unclear how suppliers will be able to respond as coronavirus continues to spread throughout those countries, too.

Analyst Edward J. Kelly of Wells Fargo Securities explained that many popular items will sell out as early as mid-April. Big-box retailers like Walmart and Target who turn inventory faster will be the “first to experience out-of-stock issues.” (LA Times)

Likely, private label and wholesale Amazon sellers will face similar issues.

In fact, Amazon has extended its window for returns. Normally, Amazon’s shoppers have only 30 days to return purchases. However, due to delays in shipping both on their end and US carriers’, Amazon is giving shoppers until May 31 to return any purchases made between March 1 and April 30

3. Consumer spending is declining

According to a survey by Moody’s Analytics, nearly 80 million U.S. jobs could be lost during the coronavirus outbreak, primarily in the travel, tourism, leisure and hospitality sectors.

With reduced consumer spending, dollars will be put towards more essential goods such as food, medical supplies, and childcare, and away from luxury items.

Despite the fact that Prime Day is often the biggest sales day for most sellers, this year’s deal day will likely happen sometime in August (though it could be pushed again), rather than the usual July.

4. Working from home is becoming the norm

There is no telling how long the U.S. will face this crisis, but some estimates peg self-isolation and lockdowns lasting several months — or perhaps as long as 18 months or more.

1. Temporarily reduce or pause advertising spending on Amazon

2. Consider Fulfillment by Merchant

If you have inventory available that isn’t currently in an Amazon fulfillment center and you’re unable to create a shipment, you can fulfill the products yourself.

Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) works a little differently than Amazon FBA.

When a sale is made, you are notified in Seller Central as well as on your Amazon Seller mobile app.

You have 24 hours to mark the order as ‘Shipped.’ Failure to ship orders within 24 hours may affect your seller account health.

Amazon offers shipping carrier services from which you can purchase directly through Amazon and print.

You will need to pick, pack, and ship the goods and ensure that the product arrives in a timely manner without any damage or issue.

There are, however, a few more risks involved with FBM shipping:

Unless you already have a large fulfillment operation in place, the costs for FBM orders can be higher than those for FBA orders.

Shoppers can leave negative seller feedback based on the speed and quality of your shipment.

3. Switch business models

Because of the difficulties you may have securing products from China or other overseas providers, business models such as private label, wholesale, and dropshipping will become difficult during the outbreak.

Furthermore, retail arbitrage may also suffer due to self-isolation and lockdown practices. Many retail stores will close.

Manufacture your own products: 3D printers are becoming less and less expensive. And there are some sellers on Amazon who design, print, and sell their own 3D-printed goods.

What if I already had a shipment on the way?

If you created a shipment before March 17, Amazon will still accept your inventory and put it into its supply chain as normal.

What happens to inventory still at port?

As long as any inventory that is currently in transit to Amazon has an inventory replenishment order placed before March 17, Amazon will accept the inventory into its fulfillment network.

Will Amazon freeze/suspend fees and loan payments, too?

As of April 9, Amazon announced it would temporarily pause account suspensions related to supply chain and fulfillment difficulties. Since March 20, Amazon has not been suspending sellers who have had high late shipment rates, and Amazon says these changes will remain in effect until May 15.

As of this writing, there is no word on whether or not Amazon seller fees will be frozen.

However, Amazon had made mention that it may temporarily disable its Inventory Performance Index (IPI).

The IPI is part of the seller’s account health metrics. It is the score that Amazon uses to determine the amount of inventory sellers are allowed to send Amazon.

In addition, Amazon sent out a notification that they are going to waive April’s long-term storage fee for sellers in the US, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The email did not mention whether or not that waiver will be extended past April.

Most recently, on March 25, multiple sellers received a notification from Amazon Lending. It said that — effective March 26 through April 30th — Amazon Lending would be pausing repayments on outstanding loans, and that loans would not accrue interest during that period.

The notification also stated that payments will resume on May 1st, 2020, with sellers retaining their previous monthly payment date and the same number of payments as before.

Can I get my inventory out of Amazon’s fulfillment centers?

The short answer is yes — but it may take a while.

FBA sellers who hoped to have inventory stored at Amazon’s fulfillment centers returned to them right away (in order to sell it FBM) are — for the time being — out of luck. Amazon recently sent out an email stating that removal operations are being paused temporarily in some of their fulfillment centers.

But, that doesn’t mean sellers can’t still submit removal orders. It just means that fulfilling those requests will take longer than usual.

Auto-removals are also going to be held up due to this interim stoppage.

What types of products should I sell on Amazon during the crisis?

If you have the ability, sell essentials. Focus, too, on products for people who are self-isolating during the crisis.

Consider that not only will people have to work from home, but children will have to stay home from school as well.

Can the virus be transmitted through packages?

The New England Journal of Medicine published a report stating that the SAR-CoV-2 coronavirus can survive on cardboard for up to 24 hours and plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours.

Having said that, U.S. carriers are taking extra precautions:

The U.S. Postal Service citing the World Health Organization stated that there is very low risk for transmission of the coronavirus through packages. In addition, they are constantly monitoring the situation.

UPS has increased monitoring of its employees for sickness and complying with all government mandates.

FedEx is also taking extra precautions to ensure that their deliveries are safe during the crisis.

DHL also released a 2-page press release explaining the measures they were taking to ensure safe deliveries.

So here’s information about my Overwatch OC, who recently got a rather big rework! His story changed slightly but his abilities got an complete erasure! I’m going to start with his story first, his command, and then his abilities - I’ll slap it under the cut!

Story:

Born as the fifth child and first son to the Liao family, who are known to be exceptionally rich and well-connected, from birth Liao was raised to be the prim and proper son to inherit the fortune and fame brought by his familial blood. The family honored tradition and manners above all else, though they did not shy away from criminal underbellies to support their interests and accumulate more wealth, they upheld their appearance to the public as being the idyllic family - the type of family that everyone should strive to have. There was no time for Chaoxiang to experience a typical childhood, unable to be rambunctious, as he studied, trained, and waited for the day that he would become the head of his family, marry a nice woman, and have children of his own. It was a future that he expected, but did not want.

Repressed for much of his life, on the night of his eighteenth birthday, Chaoxiang took a chance for a moment of self discovery. After paying off the security posted at his home, Chaoxiang disappeared into the countryside to the farm of an alleged distant cousin. Spending three weeks isolated from his family, doing hard work on a chicken farm, allowed Chaoxiang to realize he did not want to follow in the steps that his parents had planned for his future. Returning home, Chaoxiang sought an escape from the overbearing pressures placed on him by his parents, and relief came in the form of the Soldier Enhancement Program beginning in America, a program seeking volunteers. It was not difficult to use his families extreme wealth and connections to place Chaoxiang in the program, becoming the fourth out of many others to join.

Chaoxiang Liao would be given the title of Soldier #4, and referred to by his fellow test subjects by his last name. Liao would come to learn that being an early subject for the SEP would result in terrifying failure after failure. The chemical in his body, while able to enhance his abilities, became extremely volatile once in his system - more so than later test subjects, and with more outdated chemicals coursing in his body that caused variables in his data than future test subjects, it became harder for the program to consider Liao a valuable asset. After losing his eyesight, Liao was removed from the Soldier Enhancement Program, abandoned in a facility with the other failed subjects waiting to die from the chemicals.

Fate had other plans for the young Liao. One night, Moira O’Deorain entered the facility to retrieve her friend and take the tossed aside SEP subjects. It was her dedication to help the abandoned, and Liao’s willingness to be tested on, that helped Moira establish her theories in genetic engineering - Moira even restored Liao’s vision, though not perfect, he is capable of seeing the world in what he could only describe as a cosmic vision. As time passed Liao only became angry and convinced Moira to help him steal classified cybernetics that had stopped being developed on account of the equipment being far too dangerous due to its abilities, and to the fact that all previous test subjects had spontaneously combusted upon installing and using the equipment. Stealing the information, Moira rebuilt the cybernetics, installing them into Liao’s body. It was terrifying - the cybernetics fused to his body in ways neither had thought possible, getting beneath the skin, and even melding with his heart - the pieces followed along his skeletal structure, stopping just below his neck, wrists, and ankles.

Though kicked from the program, Liao kept in touch with the other soldiers - primarily Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes, two men he considered to be great friends. His commitment and loyalty was one of the reasons the two felt comfortable bringing the idea of Overwatch to Liao. Together, with three others, they established Overwatch and its many branches, and under Liao’s command he established Fyrewatch - dedicated to rescue and relief.

Despite everything, after countless years of service to the organization that he had helped in founding, Liao was labeled as a traitor to his friends, blamed for the deaths of the terrible explosion that marked Overwatch’s first downfall, and was marked in the history books as a Talon mole. While declared dead in every possible book - erased in others - Liao lived life as a secret prisoner to a branch of disgruntled Talon members, freed after nearly thirty years. Now Liao hides in his closest friend, Moira’s, lab.

Fyrewatch:

Fyrewatch was the search and rescue operations arm of Overwatch. It attempted to operate beyond the reach of red tape, but was scrutinized by the UN and inhibited by their rules. Fyrewatch was established at the beginning of the Omnic Crisis and the birth of Overwatch. Chaoxiang Liao oversaw its operations and trained its agents.

Commander Chaoxiang Liao dedicated his life to Fyrewatch. He worked nonstop, sought out recruits unafraid of Fyrewatch’s reputation of having the most grueling training program. He was extremely close to the members of Fyrewatch, especially his six most trusted members: Jun-Seon Mi, his second in command, Rocco Reid, a young mechanic and field medic in training, Carlos Mendez, a senior member of Blackwatch transferred by personal request, Yamiko Sasukey, a former member of the Deadlock Gang, Maximilian Pose, Fyrewatch’s private clothing designer, and Yin, a very mysterious man.
