My current TV obsession: edited clips on Law & Order's official YouTube channel

It may be cheesy and full of copaganda. But Law & Order remains a TV show that I love so much, I'm glued to edited clips of episodes on YouTube.

Note I am not talking about the new revival now airing on NBC, which is so wedded to the classic formula of creator Dick Wolf it’s been leached of nearly all creativity. And not the various spin offs, especially long-in-the-tooth Special Victims Unit, which mostly rely on the charisma of longtime stars like Mariska Harguitay to keep viewers hooked.

I’m talking the original flavor of the show, which ran from 1990 to 2010 -- especially during its heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Wolf, who was a writer on the classic cop show Hill Street Blues, built a series which captured the gritty, world-weary atmosphere of New York City, welding cops and lawyers stories into a formula which felt revolutionary at the time.

Half the episode focuses on discovering the crime and the search – usually by two acerbic NYPD detectives – to find a suspect. The other half of the episode follows the district attorney’s office as they try the accused and attempt to put them behind bars.

It’s a rigid formula, with act breaks punctuated by the trademark Dun! Dun! sound effect, that packaged a surprising amount of creativity and style.

So imagine my delight when I discovered the show’s official YouTube page offers edited clips of episodes ranging from Season 20 in 2010 all the way back to the first season. I binged them like televised potato chips, inspiring me to write a passionate essay about Law & Order on YouTube for NPR’s digital series on obsessions, I'M REALLY INTO.

With all this goncharov fever I would like to share with you all a piece of very important historical context and also one of my favorite historical anecdotes.

Why make a mob film set in italy full of nothing but russians? Well. Let me tell you something about something that happened three years earlier, in 1970.

1970 marks the creation of an organization called the italian-american civil rights league. And if you're reading that and going. huh? why did the italians need a civil rights league? That's the correct reaction. Anti-italian sentiment was still around, of course, but it had been a While since americans systematically discriminated against italians (that happened quite a bit in the 1910s but that's another story) (and nowadays the most anti-italian sentiment you see is from chris pratt, which is hardly comparable)

The italian-american civil rights league had a goal: to stop the unfair depiction of italians as only violent criminals and Mafiosos. One tiny. tiny problem with this. it was run by a man named Joseph Colombo, who was.... well. a member of the Profaci crime family. He claimed FBI harassment, aligned himself with the jewish defense league, and generally made a name for himself without this little detail being revealed for quite a while, even appearing on TV shows and describing his occupations in vague terms to obfuscate the fact that the guy trying to claim calling italians mafia was bad was in fact a member of the mafia. When The Godfather was set to come out in 1971 Colombo took a couple of goons with him to threaten producer Albert Ruddy personally, to which Ruddy responded by plopping the several hundred pages of script down in front of Columbo and asking him what he'd like removed. When Colombo replied with "I ain't reading all that" they reached an accord that the words Mafia and Costa Nostra were not to appear Anywhere in the film, and the league cooperated fully with the release, but not every filmmaker has that kind of balls, and so a lot of people were (understandably) fairly cowed by the threat of being assassinated for promoting italian stereotypes.

So what do you do if you don't have the balls to plop your script down in front of the mafia and tell them to read it? well. you make all your main characters russians.

You're a young boy, probably around 11-12, and an old man finds you. He invites you to his monostary in order to train to become a ninja, and he tells you you have a special gift. Excited to see what this special gift he's talking about is, you happily follow him and he gives you a nice home, good food, and a place to rest. He shows you around and tells you to get some rest and you'll start training tomorrow.

For the next couple years, this is your life now. You learn his name is Wu, but you call him Sensei Wu, and he spends all of his time training you to become a ninja. He tells you of a great power within and it turns out, you can control the wind.

After years of training and mastering your element of wind, your Sensei tells you of a profacy. The prophecy of the Green Ninja. He tells you that if all of the golden weapons respond to your energy, you are destined to become the Green Ninja. So you train, and train, and train, doing everything in your power to get stronger, to make your Sensei, who you have grown to love as a father, proud of you. You want to fulfill your destiny that he so greatly believes you have.

The day finally comes. You walk into the room with your sensei already waiting, golden weapons layed out, waiting to receive your energy and help you fulfill your destiny. You stand, and you wait... and wait... and wait... and. Nothing.

"I am sorry. You are not destined to be the Green Ninja." He tells you, almost a bit too easily.

"B-But, you made me believe!" you shout back. "Everything can't of been for nothing!" But he doesn't listen. He goes back to his room with the weapons and shuts the door, giving no response to your devastation. You tell yourself that he has to of made a mistake. The next day you argue with him, and decide to prove him wrong. You set out to find the tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master. But you fail.

You die in the Caves of Despair. But you are not able to rest. You are sent to the departed realm, still cursed with these powers that were once such a blessing. After what only feels like a couple of days, you decide to get revenge on the father figure that made you believe. He lied to you, and then threw you away like nothing!

A hole finally opens up leading to the mortal world, and the first thing you see as you fly out is your old Sensei, the one that took you in just to betray you and, what's this? He already has many other replacements for you, including one that's wearing... WAIT, He's wearing green.

But... But that's your color. YOU'RE THE GREEN NINJA. Not some copycat replacement for you. The feelings of betrayal, anger, and jealousy all wirl around in your ghostly body, memories echoing throughout your head. You decide to devise a plan to take down those new ninja, and become the Green Ninja, which you deserve, as the original pupil

Your name is Morro, Master of Wind, and you... are the Green Ninja.

Part 1

narrator “do you ever wonder what if?”

(dinky sandra and little fox’s boat crashes they wash up on shore and call out for birdboy)

sandra” dinky…I think his gone “

dinky “no”

(Sandra and little fox are seen hugging dinky)

(The scene changes to the magical forest as Maria is seen drinking from a stream she looks up and sees birdboy’s unconscious body)

(Birdboy is seen getting his wound treated and is then seen taking to Maria)

Maria” my name is Maria what’s your name?”

birdboy”….birdboy”

(The scene changes to dinky who is sleeping and dreaming)

birdboy”I’m not from here “

(Dinky is seen sleeping on a flowerbed she wakes and looks around)

dinky” where am I? Hello”

(She sees a light and runs after it)

dinky “wait come back!”

(Dinky cases the light but soon she sees birdboy)

(The magical forest is seen again as birdboy and Maria walk birdboy looks stressed as his demon comes out)

dinky “no this time it was more of a nightmare a monster came this time and birdboy was there to “

little fox” dinky I think this could mean something “

dinky”it feels like something is telling me that birdboy is out there alive and with his demon”

(Birdboy is seen covering his face as Maria approaches him with concern)

Maria” birdboy are ok what’s wrong are you hurt?”

(Birdboy says nothing)

Maria”please let me help you “

sandra”dinky theos are just dreams “

(Birdboy backs away from Maria)

(The scene cuts back to the trio in the labbrey looking for a book little fox finds it birdboy is seen waking up in a bed he looks around and sees a doctor treating his wounded arm)

(Gordi is shown showing birdboy around enchdoing him to the other teddy bears)

pandi”his feathers are so soft “

(Azulin and birdboy are seen sitting on bench)

birdboy “i know what it’s like”

birdboy “to have a demon inside of you “

(Birdboy’s demon is seen)

(Jump cuts back to the trio in their clubhouse as little fox looks over the pages he stops and shows it to dinky)

Little fox”is this it dinky?

(Dinky looks closely at the page and gasp)

dinky “it..it can’t be it’s the place from my dreams”

sandra”really dinky that can be true that place is just as bad as here there’s no way “

dinky”no it is the same place I know it is his there we have to go there birdboy is alive”

(Dinky runs and climes down the ladder as Sandra and little fox chase after her dinky is seen packing up her things)

Sandra “dinky you can’t be serious that place is dangerous and that so called profecy they'll think your trying to be the chosen one"

little fox”huh profacy?”

Sandra” the teddy bears there believed that the unicorns were evil”

little fox” why would they think that?

sandra" well i don't known for sure but i heard that the unicorns took the forest from the teddy bears"

(dinky is seen heading to the magical forest as sandra and little fox try to stop her)

sandra" You are going to get yourself killed!"

little fox" please don't go dinky we already survived the forgotten children"

(one of the twins is seen approaching birdboy as his demon tries to come out birdboy runs away and is seen curled up into a ball and crys as gordi tries to confrert him)

dinky “you both don’t have to come with me but please let me try I need to know if his out there “

(padre walks torweds birdboy birdboy backs away)

padre" clam yourself child i will not harm you"

(Azulin , pandi , coco and Caricias look through birdboy’s bag and found the glowing acorns)

azulin”what are these ?”

(Padre is seen looking at the acorns)

padre” young man why do you have these?”

(Jump cuts to birdboy talking to azulin and gordi as birdboy covers his eyes)

birdboy “I’m sorry (sobs) I’m sorry I didn’t mean it “

(Birdboy is swapping his claws at padre and then the twins)

gordi” birdboy why did you do that?”

(Birdboy hyperventiles and backs away)

(Dinky is seen walking to the magical forest as Sandra and little fox follow after)

(Birdboy is seen as his teeth grow sharp as azulin walks up to him)

azulin”what is wrong with you?”

gordi “please birdboy let us help you”

(Birdboy shacks his head no as birdboy backs away azulin walks up to him)

azulin” signs) we can’t help you if you keep quiet “

(Birdboy then runs away )

azulin” hey get back here!”

(Gordi cashes after him)

Gordi “birdboy wait come back please!”

(Birdboy then flys away)

(The teddy bears come out to see what happened)

dinky”this looks a nice place to rest”

(Dinky sandra and little fox are seen sleeping )

coco”today’s the big day”

(The general startes his speech)

(Dinky sandra and little fox are seen in the small village talking to some of the teddy bears)

(The teddy bears are seen with their loved one’s before they go dinky runs in front of the crowd)

dinky “wait take us with you!”

(Jump cut the teddy bears ,dinky, sandra and little fox are seen in the forest but a shadowy rat like figure watches them from a far)

rat” aah to think I thought you were all gone you and unicorns (cackles ) such sweet yet sorry young souls you are all of you”

(Birdboy is flying over the forest and Lands as he looks around Unaware that someone is watching him )

Sandra “dinky has been having these weird dreams lately “

(Sandra is seen with little fox talking to gordi it’s nighttime)

dinky “please you have to help us find him “

(It’s morning and everyone counties the journey a twig is heard snapping and the group looks around and sees nothing but the rat makes himself known)

rat”hello my friends “

(The teddy bears ready their weapons but the rat dogeues them)

rat” come now there’s no need to be so rude and hostile “

(Azulin try’s to stab him but the rat grabs his hand with his tail and throws him to the ground)

rat” it is no use little bears I have not come to fight at lest not yet”

(Caricias takes out his knife)

Caricias “who are you!?”

(The rat just laughs and takes out a smoke screen)

rat”that is my secret “

(He throws the smoke screen)

(The rat is seen talking to a rabbit)

Rat”have you found him?”

rabbit”yes but he got away “

rat”heheh no matter the plan will still work out in the end”

(The teddy bears are seen eating the caterpillars and the Mimosin twins wander off they get separated)

Mimosin “ little brother!”

Mimosin “little brother where are you?”

(The ‘monster caterpillar’ appears but before Mimosin can do anything someone hits him in the back of the head knocking him out)

(The next day everyone wakes up and notices that the twins are missing they start looking for them )

(the raindrop falls from leaf to leaf and then into a pool of blood)

(the rat and the rabbit are seen killing a unicorn)

(they are then seen walking to their hideout where the twins are bound and gagged and scared as they watch the rat and the rabbit gather items the rat pulls out a wooden box)

rat" I never thought I'd have to use this again"

(dinky sandra and little Fox and the teddy bears are seen walking through the forest)

rabbit" and what might that be?"

(they find the lone owls)

sandra"Oh my gosh"

gordi" No please no"

dinky" How did this happen?"

(pandi and sorisas look at the corpes's)

pandi "What did this to them?"

(Little fox cry’s as Sandra tries to confront him Caricias holds up a skull and cries)

Caricias “we’re going to die “

(Birdboy in his demon form is seen flying)

padre”the unicorns my children the beasts have no mercy “

little fox”no that’s not true!”

(Gordi is seen picking up a feather and shows it to dinky )

gordi “dinky do you think? This is his?”

dinky” yes he was here”

(Maria is seen talking to her mother)

Maria’s mother “we come from nature and we must protect the forest and help those who help Mother Nature “

Maria” mom birdboy where is he where is he from is he ok?”

(Birdboy is seen alone looking at the his reflection as Maria’s mother appoeches him)

Maria’s mother “ he is well Maria but Maria there is something you must know “

Maria” what is it?”

(Birdboy swipes his claws at Maria’s mother )

Maria’s mother “he has a demon inside “

(Maria’s mother manages to calm him down )

Maria “what but how?”

Maria’s mother “we all have demons Maria some just roar louder than others “

(Maria’s mother is talking to birdboy as he watches her bring life back to the forest)

(The teddy bears ready there weapons but dinky Sandra and little fox sees birdboy with her )

dinky “birdboy!”

Sandra “his alive?”

little fox”your ok!”

(Before they can do anything the arrows get shot into Maria’s mother)

rat”now now attack now fool!”

(The rabbit the rat who is wearing a white rosé petal around his neck shines and glows attacks both the teddy bears and Maria’s mother as she tries to protect birdboy )

little fox” stop you’re hurting them!”

dinky “they’re not doing anything wrong!”

Maria’s mother “run birdboy!”

(Birdboy in his demon form fly’s away as the rat gives a silent order to the rabbit to go after him)

rat “you must give up now”

(The rat stabs Maria’s mother and knocks out padre as the kids azulin gordi and coco get away as the other teddy bears laid unconscious)

(Birdboy is seen crashing into the ground as the rabbit approaches him as he turns back to normal)

rat” you have no reason to fear me birdboy for I too have a demon inside “

(Birdboy is tied up looking fearfully at the rat)

(Dinky and little fox are trying to clean coco’s wounds)

gordi”what do we do now?”

dinky “we have to find that rat”

(Azulin appoerches coco but Sandra blocks his way)

(Dinky Sandra little fox azulin and seen running as a shadowy figure appoeresch coco)

dinky “we don’t know who he is but wants you guys and the unicorns “

Sandra “or what he has against us”

(The rat is seen dragging coco to his hideout)

rat”I have be on the run for so long and trying to find you teddy bears and unicorns “

(Sandra is seen trying to strangle azulin as gordi tries to stop her)

(birdboy is seen hiding as the rabbit looks for him)

(coco and padre are running from a shadow-like creature)

rat"I'll harle you all down with my own hands"

(the rat is seen talking to otto)

(dinki and maria are seen getting water)

rat”they all said I was crazy”

(The Mimosin twins are seen being chased by a pair of shadowy demons that look a little like them)
