American jews 🤝 Israeli jews
"holy shit, I'm so scared for you in your country - it isn't as bad for me in mine!"
#jumblr#jewish politics#antisemitism tw#personal thoughts tag#help why are they/we like this!!!#specifying american vs israeli because i am american and interact with a lot of israelis if i'm interacting with people online or whatever#also. i'm scared for french jews - i don't know many personally but france is........ absolutely infuriating#if the french government said they are investing €55B to space programs to find the Jewish Space Lasers I wouldn't be shocked#i would be more shocked that they haven't already tried to find those mythical space lasers before

What if your rotom records your snoring because its worried about you? We may think its funny, but imagine if YOUR human was lying there, not moving, choking and dribbling at 3AM.
my rotom used to overheat my phone until it shut down unless i let it play candy crush saga. i don't think that's what's going on.
#thankfully the rotom community online was very helpful in suggesting solutions#btw FUCK companies making rotom-powered tech that don't natively install properly enriching programs for it#charlietalks#pkmn irl#pokemon irl#pokemon behavior#rotom

#theres an online pastry program............#im gonna look into that as well as the vet tech program#part of me is so reluctant to give up on pastry but part of me says maybe i should stop trying to monetize my hobby#and i like the vet tech program bc its the same school i graduated high school from so i know how they teach#it can be challenging being online but ive done it before and im getting help for my adhd now#but when i was in normal college and they had online classes . i just Could Not#so idk about a different online school#theres just no other options#i need to find out more about their externship#bc thats the scariest part obviously#the vet tech program has 2#but the pastry program i dropped out of had 3 . i already did one. and the hours are literally insane#my friend who did a nurse practitioner thing (idk exactly idk how it works lol) had less internship hours#than the culinary program.#she is sticking people with needles.#and its only like that bc the head of the program is a power hungry control freak who thinks chefs shouldn't get breaks 😀#he made it to make us suffer. congratulations you succeeded and perhaps threw away my dream since I was 13 😀 are you happy chef ******

I have been focused exclusively on Surviving for so fucking long that I kind of forgot I wanted to do anything other than that. I wanted to get a psyd and a counseling license once I could save up the money for school. I wanted to get crochet guild mastery once my credit card was paid off. I was actively working towards getting licensed when I got sick, even though it may have looked to the outside like a random detour.
also I keep reiterating how young I was because age never worked the same for me in the first place, as a severely parentified and neglected child. I think of college kids as kids and it's normal for them to do dumb childish stuff, but I really fucking wasn't even if I should have been. and now I'm in my 30s but I've been debilitatingly sick since I was 22 and other people think I've missed out on formative experiences and now I get infantilzed instead, despite still carrying (and up until quite recently being relied on for!) the parentification broad-spectrum hypercompetence. it's not that 18 year olds can't be good at stuff, there are world class athletes that are 18. it's that that particular skillset is one that a kid shouldn't be in a position to develop so fully so early. I wasn't doing it one hour a month for volunteer credits or some shit, I had no protections at all. and now I've got this masterwork just gathering dust in a closet, metaphorically speaking, because I can't get it assessed in order to actually get fucking paid.
idk man it's hard to explain. even with the wisdom of age or whatever I can see I was genuinely already really fucking good at my job even back then, and this isn't clouded by recollection but coming from looking at direct verbatim record. I can never, ever, ever expect anyone else to be that good at it, even when it's very literally their paid and licensed job. which implies nobody should have to develop that level of skill just in general, let alone as a kid. which also implies my level of skill is unusual.
it's just kind of a lot of stuff tangled together. as usual. I didn't get a lot of practice at existing.
#ask to tag#and like I did occasionally poke at trying to do those things!#honestly money was the limiting factor as often as my health#but now they keep telling me hey we have money if you want to do things#and I feel like I forgot.#everything gets smaller and smaller as you get sicker and sicker and I forgot. it was too far away.#the last time arin had income before she started med school I started researching masters' programs#just cuz they're faster and consequently cheaper#easier to find all-online programs too#but then I wasn't getting any better and then there were the financial aid issues#and the money problems did not stop from there up until a couple months ago.#at least for me.#and even now they're not *better* it's just that savings-destroying crises aren't going to fall to me anymore#so they're just. meager but stable.#getting the disability rating would help so much.#but of course. if I was less sick I could've worked more and gotten some money myself.

Me going into that interview powered-up from all the luck and well-wishes from my family and friends like:
#i talk#job talk#I think it went really well!#Despite my body and brain self-sabotaging me by keeping me up until like... 3:30 am last night#The biggest mark against me is the fact that I don't have tons of experience managing a specific program platform#but I (a bit belatedly) reminded them that I have tons of experience doing website management (including our company's website)#so maybe that helps???#There were 3 interviewers which would've been stressful (even if that seems to be the norm now) but I knew all of them#Like. I don't know them SUPER well but I DO know them. As in we've all met and there's no bad blood or anything#So that helped a LOT#Me on my hands and knees like: Please let this be a nepotism hire I need a better paying job so frickin bad#It's hilarious (but mostly extremely depressing) how the first interview I've gotten in YEARS after hundreds of job applications—#—is only because it's for a job at a company I already work for. What a mess. And I have almost 10 years of experience in my field#Anyways. It was a virtual interview but I still put makeup on so A) They don't see how dead I look#and because B) My eyeliner really makes my expressions more visible#I actually never wore eyeliner until I started teaching online during the peak of the pandemic / lockdown#I made the same discovery that my eyeliner really makes my expressions more visible and I look friendlier#Which I think helped since my students were all Going through It (I mean; we all were; but good god lockdown was bad for the kids)#So now I just kinda always wear eyeliner when I do makeup. I could probably do it thinner but I'm too lazy to re-learn it#Makeup is an expensive art form but I admire anyone who is dedicated to the practice. It's really cool seeing people do it!#Anyhoo back to work#gif warning

Tbh the strangest and most concerning thing about kids that I’ve observed get steadily worse is how these kids just…don’t know how to use a computer???
Like if you put a 12-15 year old kid and my 50 something year old mom next to each other and asked them to copy and paste using a computer, both would look at me like a deer in headlights!!
And yes I know some of this is because schools just don’t really have computer classes anymore (like I had ones that taught “proper” typing, Microsoft office programs like Word and PowerPoint, etc.) but like??? Every school I’ve been to so far has had computers for students so they’re all on devices all the time yet still don’t know how to use them.
Hell, they barely know how to type a URL in! Like! Huh! I’m genuinely concerned about them not knowing how to use a computer properly and how they use it so freely without proper thought and care as to what they put out into the world.
#meows#SORRY teacher rant#and before you go well then just make your work paper#1. their handwriting is on level with their reading scores (3rd grade or lower)#and 2. the main class I teach has a program that’s only online#that I’m required to make them use#and tbh for my two ela classes most of my stuff IS paper#except bell ringers that’s online#it’s just scary how their media literacy is on par w their computer skills#I even try to add visual instructions to help them#but next day boom gone#I have kids who still ask how to copy and paste their assignments#into the turn in box even tho it’s a daily assignment they do#and so theoretically they should be copying and pasting each day#and yet!

I just found a way to deckbuild and potentially play online multiplayer with my custom cards. This is awesome
#in summary: cockatrice#it's a free online mtg program where you can just build decks and play them against other players online#and you can upload custom sets :D#magic set editor even has a built-in export option for exporting a cockatrice set#it's a little awkward and i keep needing to reboot cockatrice but it works! i can build and play custom decks!#how well does it work online? no idea#the other player(s) may or may not need to have the custom cards as well. i don't know#but honestly just being able to do this much is incredible already#i can even build sealed decks because MSE has a pack opening simulator that you can export from#gosh i'm getting so into this that i'm considering making super-simple art for the cards to help visually distinguish them#very very nice to be able to identify a card at a glance#just like quick mono-color lineart doodles#i've barely drawn anything in my life but i'm so obsessed with my creation#definitely going to want to finalize the flavor of it before i start making art tho#god i am NOT eager to give proper names to all 180+ cards#making a few proper nouns will help name things better and faster tho#a few major characters and faction names and locations#instead of just “forge spirit” it would be “flameworks spirit” or something#give a touch of flavor and personality to it

Rematching comfort media (george trombley's Japanese From Zero lessons) bc I'm rusty and want to get active with the language again, and bc I'm feeling stressed out and need to relax so bad...
(I just feel really warm inside when i rewatch his videos. I hope i get to 250th+ episode again this time :) )
#i wish chinese and french had online series that teach them this well and for free#i always felt like japanese language learner community was very mutual-help driven with all the free programs and resources...#most full chinese and french course videos on youtube are ''samples'' and you need to ''buy peoples courses'' to get anywhere else.#and theres nobody who like... gets this personal. mr trombley is really fun to watch. and he explains everything in a fun way#with personal anecdotes.#hnnnhhh i Wish there were more lesson series like this about other languages. i

My ArcGIS program has apparently decided that it hates me specifically and is refusing to do, like, basic-ass functions, even when I follow my tutorial step-by-step. So that's fun. Tried getting help on Reddit, I don't think they know what particular function I'm referring to. Probably going to try to do the lesson on the Virtual Workspace tomorrow if my advisor didn't successfully order glycogen today, but considering that the ArcGIS add-on that I need to use for my project can only be used on my personal computer, I do actually need to get my version to start cooperating sometime in the near future.
#grad school#there's no reason for it to not be working and yet...#it's also rejecting the importing of Excel files even though the online help says that I shouldn't have to download anything new#this is absolutely stupid#if it persists I'm bugging the university's ArcGIS people and being like this program hates me

Sincerely as a former user of both Excel and sheets, it is nuts how much easier libre office calc is. Not in the typical way that certain things are easier to access but moreso that the formulas and ways things are set up just work with my brain better. I never really had much need to learn formulas in Excel because there were so many and the layout felt over complicated, and don't even get me started on sheets. But with calc, there's a lot more freedom with the formulas and a lot of the skills you have from either of those other programs carries on here. Not a super big point or anything to this post, just simply very appreciative of what calc can do.
#twist rambles#like. obviously i use it a lot to format data. and i was looking into how i wanted to compare two lists bc i need to see the duplicate#issues between them. I don't want to do that manually lol. and there are so many tactics that just work out there.#like. I think in some ways u do have to fight w calc a little bit. i did a school project where we had to do a timeline and where excel has#that feature built in. calc does not. i had to spend an hour familiarizing myself with the formulas and digging on old forums and that is#simply more enjoyable to me bc i walked away with much more knowledge of the program than ok click 2 buttons. i work w spreadsheets often#enough that familiarizing myself w the formulas and different tools honestly is more helpful than it being one of the billion menu options#plus libre is free and has a ton of manuals online. which is great. and it runs better on any machine than office#^ was just thinking about all of this bc i like. didnt have the desire to learn with other sheet programs but i do here. its rewarding

Why do some university students two years younger than me not know how to use Microsoft Office? I knew that schools don't teach computer skills as much as they used to, but like... this is worrying.
#roach.txt#My friend who's a year younger than me can't use it#neither can my group members in a school project i'm doing w them#and they're not the only people in my classes who can't#I took typing classes as a second grader and apparently they don't do those anymore either#like...#you can't expect them to just have these skills! they need to be taught#they're not automatically good at it just bc they grew up online#and like... a lot of jobs need people to know how to use Microsoft Office#if they don't trust their abilities enough to open the help tab in the program#then i really worry abt their futures tbh#rant#tech literacy#computer literacy#i sound like such a boomer rn but this is honestly concerning#computers#tech#first they got rid of cursive in schools and now this???#ugh
