Every night I brush my teeth and spit the used toothpaste into the toilet. We've rented this house for almost three years and we've dealt with the minor inconveniences like bathroom pipes, outlets not working, some kind of dark soot accumulating on the walls and probably on our lungs, and floors so poorly insulated you can feel the cold through two pairs of socks. For over 5 years, we've not used an air conditioner, although we've attempted a couple units in really dyer moments. While we run two of our own businesses, we've never paid for internet service or had anything above basic television. Our life is very different in today's world even without the van. We make theses choices because we feel it's the right choice. All the same, we're still waking up day after day, breathing and living. . . . . . . #van #vanproject #projectvan #dodge #dodgevan #wood #design #layout #vanlayout #bluevan #vanlife #lifeontheroad #lifeinmotion #lessismore #optoutside #lifechoices #husbandandwife #travel #vandiaries #diy #vanlove #lessismoreoutdoors #alternativelife #needmore #agoodstart #bigdreams #lifeinavan

@maccosmeticsph is my holy grail when it comes to foundation whether it is liquid or powder. Lately my skin looked dull and I lost my glow but with just a few dab of this MAC Studio Fix Powder, my face looked naturally fresh and glowing! No need for any concealers. My shade is NC20 and I also used MAC's @mainedcm lipstick on my lips on this photo. More detailed review on my blog tonight. ❤ You can still pre-order this Studio Fix Powder on Lazada for a buy 1 take 1 promo! Hurry! Chemicals to avoid in consumer products
Endocrine disruptor chemicals are chemicals that manipulate our bodies' natural hormone communication system, known as the endocrine system. These chemicals are often found in consumer products containing plastics and chemical plants.
In this post, I will share several dangerous endocrine disruptor chemicals to try and avoid in your product consumption. Vinyl chloride, BPA, phthalates, and polychlorinated biphenyls are the chemicals I will be reviewing in this blog.
Vinyl chloride is a carcinogenic chemical used to make plastics, it is produced with endocrine disruptor chemicals known as phthalic acid esters (Bi et al., 2021). These phthalic acid esters can potentially cause cancer via confusion and mimicry of the body’s natural endocrine system. Not only can they cause damage to the endocrine system potentially causing cancer, but they can have transgenerational consequences, meaning that the consequences may be felt much later in life, or even by the victim’s offspring (Beatrice & Ruby, 2021). This makes it difficult to hold big chemical companies accountable and pinpoint the exact damage caused. Many of the individuals who get sick due to endocrine disruptors may never know the cause.
(BCPP, 2021)
BPA is another carcinogenic endocrine disruptor used in the production of plastics and resins. BPA stands for bisphenol A (Hafezi & Abdel-Rahman, 2019). Typically, human exposure to BPA comes from exposure to the production and use of plastic consumer products, such as water bottles, food containers, and plastic containers in general (Hafezi & Abdel-Rahman, 2019). As science fights to battle cancer, products containing endocrine disruptors like BPA fight right back (Moss, 2022). BPA performs as a xenoestrogen, meaning that it mimics and manipulates estrogen systems in our endocrine systems. This manipulation can lead to breast, ovarian, colon, and prostate cancers (Hafezi & Abdel-Rahman, 2019). BPA is also damaging to reproduction potential. BPA has alternatives such as BPF or BPS. However, these chemicals can be just as damaging if not worse than BPA regarding human health and chemical exposure (Zhang, 2022).
(Rust & Kissinger, 2008)
Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, which are also found in plastic products. When it comes to the absorption of harmful chemicals, phthalates, BPA, and polychlorinated biphenyls are the greatest concerns (Wang & Qian, 2021). Phthalates can be detrimental to reproduction, development, and neurological health (Wang & Qian, 2021). Phthalates have strong regulations in many countries but are still found in many consumer products.
(Ellis, 2020; Aquino, 2016)
Finally, polychlorinated biphenyls are a carcinogenic endocrine disruptor chemical. Polychlorinated biphenyls are the most studied endocrine disruptors, and they damage neurological functions more than anything (Bell, 2014). Aside from neurological issues, liver disease and cancer are also consequences of the endocrine disruptor known as polychlorinated biphenyls (Bell, 2014). Depression, limbic system damage, reproduction issues, and skin problems are all risks that exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls carries (Bell, 2014).
(What are PCBS? 2016)
While we cannot all create new cancer treatments or stop the production and use of these chemicals, we all can help aid ourselves, our communities, and our loved ones by looking out of these chemicals in our consumer products. The people who produce and push these chemical products should certainly be held accountable. However, we must also hold ourselves accountable if we have a choice in consumption. After all, if we were able to avoid these chemicals entirely, they would become less valuable in theory. On both ends of the issue, accountability, advocacy, and education are the only viable solutions.

Do Local Beauty Brands Test On Animals?
The EU and India, and possibly other undisclosed nations and regions, implement strict bans on animal testing, while some countries, including Israel, prohibit the import, export, and marketing of animal-tested products.
These large-scale decisions prove that animal testing is an outdated and unethical practice that can and should cease to be in place.
So where does the Philippines stand in being cruelty-free?
Currently, the Philippines doesn't have a law that explicitly bans animal-testing raw materials, ingredients, and chemicals during production and finished products before they're put in the shelves of stores. Republic Act 8485 or The Animal Welfare Act, which has no clear provisions on laboratory testing, hasn't been updated since it was penned in 1998.
The bright side is that animal testing isn't required by law in the Philippines, so many local brands have the opportunity to be cruelty-free from the conception of their company and products.
How Can You Tell If Brands Are Cruelty-Free?
Unfortunately, it’s complicated as there’s nothing that can tell you straight away whether a brand is cruelty-free.
Don’t Rely On PETA’s Certification/Logo
Sadly, while PETA has a pretty comprehensive list of companies that don’t test on animals, it includes those that sell products in China.
What’s The Deal With China?
Animal testing is required for all cosmetic and body care products made and sold there. So an international brand can claim to be cruelty-free, but it no longer will be once it enters the Chinese market as its products will be subject to post-market animal testing.
Recently, there was misleading news about China’s animal testing policy. It’s true that the country is taking steps towards alternatives to testing products that don’t involve animals. But that’s still not fully implemented.
What Else Should I Look Out For?
Another thing that makes it complicated is that PETA’s standards are too loose and vague. It only requires companies to fill out a questionnaire and sign a statement of assurance that they won't conduct or pay for animal testing for ingredients, formulations, or finished products and pledge to go forth with these practices in the future.
PETA has good intentions with their cruelty-free list, and it’s a great step to anyone looking to start their journey to being a smarter consumer. It’s a safe bet to choose PETA-recognized brands. But due to the lack of investigation on their part, one can't be sure that a brand is truly cruelty-free in all stages of production, including sourcing materials and ingredients from suppliers that don’t do animal testing.
In simpler terms, companies can only be truly cruelty-free if they source their ingredients from a supplier that doesn’t test on animals, don’t test formulations and prototypes on animals, don’t implement pre- and post-market animal testing on finished products, and don’t pay third-party entities to animal-test on their behalf.
So What Now?
Thankfully, you can look to Leaping Bunny for a more reliable list of cruelty-free companies. Leaping Bunny is a collective of several animal welfare organizations that aim to revive the integrity of the “cruelty-free” label by taking away confusing and misleading information.
Leaping Bunny’s standards are more defined and stricter than PETA’s. Companies who wish to have the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny logo need to pledge, along with their ingredient suppliers, that all stages of their product development won't involve animal testing. They should also agree to undergo annual independent audits and renewals of their cruelty-free status.
What About Brands That Aren’t Recognised?
Being recognized by Leaping Bunny and PETA is voluntary, and having their logos in product packaging and marketing materials costs a significant amount of money, which can be pricey, especially for small indie companies. So there are cruelty-free brands out there that aren’t listed.
Look to Ethical Elephant, Logical Harmony, and Cruelty-Free Kitty’s cruelty-free list, which they always update. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that popular cult faves, like Anastasia Beverly Hills and Tarte, and drugstore staples, like Milani and elf, are cruelty-free!
For Philippine brands, the best way to identify their cruelty-free status is to contact them and ask them about the involvement of animal testing in all stages of production. In my opinion, it’s not bad to support local brands who claim to be cruelty-free because supporting local brands in itself is already a good start to being a smarter consumer.
No Bunnies Harmed will aim to build relationships with local companies so we can have a definitive list of truly cruelty-free products in the Philippines. We hope to do this once we’ve gained significant traction and following.
In the meantime, do your own research and use what you have. The switch to cruelty-free beauty doesn’t have to be abrupt. If you want to see a guide on transitioning to cruelty-free beauty, let us know!

This past weekend we used the van again for an event for our small business, @birdandthistle.co I'll be honest, I half expected tow #3 to happen, but the old girl made it through the entire day and got us back home. . I have my awesome aunt to thank for this badass and very last minute canopy. It's definitely something we intend to use on the road--with a few minor adjustments later on. The construction of the entire thing was completely the husband. I stood back, took pictures and held up fabric at times. . The event was absolutely awesome. This is certainly a wonderful community with many caring individuals and we very much appreciate the support. . . . . . . . #van #vanlife #vanlifers #vanlifediaries #vanlifereality #smallbusiness #husbandandwifey #homemade #madebyhand #project #projectvan #lessismore #lessismoreoutdoors #outdoors #market #handmademarket #makersgonnamake #local #illinois #adventureisoutthere #adventure #life #lifeofadventure #weekend #dodgevan #bluevan #vanplan #colors
