Aunties, can you tell us about REITs and the messed up housing market? I feel like something has to give or change with companies buying up all the homes, and I'd like to diversify my investments but do REITs just make it worse?
HOOOOOO BOY do we have THOUGHTS.
First off, here's our explainer on the housing market (and we worked really hard on it so we hope you like it):
The Rent Is Too Damn High: The Affordable Housing Crisis, Explained 
Now, on to REITs (real estate investment trust). These bad boys are sort of like the ETFs or index funds of real estate investing. It's a way for people without a ton of capital to invest in real estate when they can't afford to, say, buy a whole-ass building. You are correct that they are 1) a good way to diversify your personal investments, and 2) contributing to the housing market fuckery.

I think you can still invest in REITs ethically. You just need to choose industrial REITs, rather than residential.
For example, you can invest in REITs that represent warehouses, cell phone towers, industrial space, and office buildings (though we don't recommend that last one just now because... well, have you BEEN downtown recently?). Personally, I invest in Prologis, which is an industrial REIT that I'm comfortably certain isn't contributing to the housing crisis.
As with all investments, we recommend you research thoroughly before diving in! It's super hard to invest ethically under capitalism, but if you care, you can get pretty close to at least reducing harm. Here's more on ethical investing:

in light of it coming out the “vanadis incident”, what is heavily implied to be the prologue, was indeed 21 years ago, i went back over the cradle planet short story, which can be read here.

Transcription:
“Mom came to this planet with her daughter, seeking refuge. People had hidden them, but that didn’t mean everyone had been friendly, and some elders had argued for expelling them to avoid trouble. Still, this was the only place that they could go. They had to live here. There was no other choice.” This paragraph stands out in particular to me as notable, given that Aerial (the entire story is from Aerial’s perspective) says “her daughter”, not “Suletta”. Aerial is obviously referring to Elnora coming with Ericht to Mercury in these sentences, but the phrasing is such that Aerial could technically be referring to a different daughter of Elnora.

Transcription: “”Just you watch, everybody. Our daughter is going to avenge us!”“
She could be referring to Aerial. This line comes when Prospera talks to Aerial alone, near the end of the story. Note that in the prologie, Cardo Nabo and many of the workers at Ochs Earth made a point of stating that Lfrith was ‘everyone’s child’.
This evidence seems to support the idea that Suletta might be well be a clone, or, as evidenced by Enhanced Person Number 4 existence, someone who has had their face reconstructed in the form of another’s.
However, there are still some lines from this short story which don’t align with this theory:

“Ergo’s the leader of the elders who are still mistreating Suletta.
He was originally against the idea of taking them in, and now he’s working under Mom after her recent promotion. I can understand his situation, but it’s no reason to be mean to Suletta. What a childish old man.”
The way these lines are phrased heavily imply that Suletta was a part of ‘they’ who were taken in. It would be a very strange construct in English to set Suletta as the subject of mistreatment, then mention mistreatment towards a party that did not include Suletta, only to continue talking about Suletta’s mistreatment. It’s not impossible that this is a misdirection, but if it is, I find it to be a very strange one.
The material in the novel indicates that Suletta has lived a relatively normal, straightforward life from the age of four to the age of sixteen; this would align with Suletta and Ericht being the same person. Suletta does not have any memories from before she was four years old; but who does?

“Suletta had been too young to remember living anywhere but Mercury.”
In particular, Aerial notes that Suletta lived somewhere else before coming to Mercury, which could align with Ericht’s backstory, or, perhaps, Prospera abducted an Earthian child, given she has been known to travel frequently between Earth and Mercury, and applied the same horrific treatment to that child as was done to Enhanced Person 4.
...but then there’s the matter of elders being mean to Suletta before Prospera takes her role as CEO of Shin Sei (or the superior of the workers at Mercury).

But she hasn’t told Mom. Why not?

What reason would the elders have to be cruel to Suletta here, if not because they wanted her gone as a result of her arriving with Prospera?
To make a long story short, there’s nothing concrete that says Ericht is Suletta, and nothing concrete that says Ericht is not Suletta, but there is a whole lot of suggestive wording and potential misdirection that means it could go either way.
If Ericht really is Suletta, given that she seems to genuinely believe she is 17 years old (and if she weren’t, I would think it fairly obvious. A twenty-five year old and a seventeen year old are quite distinguishable), why?
Or rather... when did Prospera and Suletta arrive on the planet Mercury?
