The archiving of The Book of Lamentations is coming up an end and this is it’s penultimate post. The remnants are disjointed and fragmented with the first being from recent life drawing sessions from @thequeenofheartbreak with @the_liverpool_nude and #liverpoolindependentartschool - I’m not keen on the end result but the gold of life drawing is training to look and see rather than the finished outcome -so really it no longer feels important if I like the outcome or not. The next drawing is a test print of a small drypoint from our weekend courses at @bridewellstudiosliverpool looking toward the incinerator tower at the Royal. The last was a remaining test sample which found its home in a spare page of this book from our pre-Covid trip to Lancaster Iron Press to learn a photo-etching process. Un des premiers FROMBOOKTO, en 2003. Partant d’un livre adoré, “THE LAST GARDEN” de Derek Jarman, et d’une commande de la Revue DDO pour une exposition numérique, le voyage se fait, du livre à la réalité, vers Dungeness, England, où Derek Jarman passa ses dernières années.  Photos argentiques, numériques, Super 8, dessins, notes... et du Flash, encore valable une année...

What a wonderful book. Modern Nature by Derek Jarman. I've been dipping in and out of this memoir for the past few months, inbetween the numerous fiction books i've read - I'd been inspired to read Modern Nature following Olivia Laing's marvellous and insightful book, The Lonely City. So today, after a few months, and whilst the May rain thankfully waters my thirsty garden, I finally finished this Modern Nature. Even though I have never actually seen any of Derek Jarman's visual art, whether that be his films, paintings, sculptures, his garden, I was very much aware of his public profile and his garden in Dungeness, having reached my adolescence during the late 80s and early 90s not far away along the south coast of England in Eastbourne. Reading his almost-two years worth of diary entries, I have a renewed appreciation of Jarman's humanity and outlook, seeing the value he placed in friendships, being prepared to be publicly open about his HIV diagnosis, his contributing fight to adress and repeal repressive social stigmas underpinned by the establishment's entrenched antiquated repressive education and laws, and to do his bit in trying to help fund research, guidance and campaigning to find a cure. This is a book based around his love of gardening, opening up in to reflections on his own adolescence, art school contemporaries, film making, months in and out of hospital fighting TB and the cocktail of drugs he ends up having to take. And death. The book is infused with a lot of death. But love of life too. Jarman was definately a part of that 'lost generation', himself dying just a few years after the end of these entries. All in all, a very good read. It naturally makes me want to go back down to the south coast and walk along the shingle. It also makes me want to get outside in to the garden and to be at peace with what surrounds me. The Book of Lamentations was not a planned document with a clear timeline so these pages record one of the last arts adventures we had before lockdown when @starrursula and @paulg.art took me to @Iron pressprintmaking for an intro to photo-etch. I was planning my next pilgrimage (these are a series of short performances where I go to various places of LGBT interest and treating them as shrines to Bodhisattvas and making Prostrations and offerings). My next one was to be #prospectcottage the earthly residence of and shrine to Saint #derekjarman Suddenly, although I had always wanted to make the journey the cottage was under threat from developers as we went into the first full lockdown. There was a noble fundraising effort put in place to save the #saveprospectcottage but I was panic stricken because the whole direction of the world was suddenly about covid while this place of remembrance of one of the fiercest voices of resisting the last big deadly virus was under threat. The target was hit just on the last day and the holy place saved. These pages are about that and my rereading “A Saint’s Testament” as part of my Queer Glimpses lectures just before lockdown. Again these pages are part complete and are likely to gradually become more layered- first is the digital design for the photo-etch of the Saint outside the shrine, second a print from that block, next an overly textured test print and following that some research images and tests including a monoprint of his face. After several hours and very much wrestling with the nightmare software of Etsy I finally have my photo etch of my hero Saint Derek Jarman print listed on my shop (link in the biog above). It is printed in a lush lapis blue oil based ink to honour him. I wanted to post this one for several reasons - one us that it is thirty years this year since Jarman was canonised by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to honour his work as an artist and AIDS activist, also that the major retrospective of his work “Protest!” Begins in Manchester next week and finally because today is still just about, (despite hours of bring fucked around by Etsy ) World AIDS Day. At Jarman’s funeral the mourners wore blue ribbons instead of red because it was the last colour he could still see as the disease ravaged his eyesight. I hope his Pureland is carved from Lapis and sapphire and filled with laughter and beautiful men.
