A couple days back from this year's summer vacation, a very detoxing, and thankfully pretty dry znd sunny, camping trip in the Lake District, which started off beside the sylvan waters of the River Derwent in Buttermere - not a bad welcome after a 6 hour drive. I finished the third part of Pat Barker's marvellous Regeneration trilogy, with the Booker prize wunning The Ghost Road. Even though I am no expert on Lewis Carroll or his Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, there are aparent references to them that add further layers on top of the Jekyll & Hyde refs of the second book, building even more intrigue and fascination to the beguiling stories of Billy Prior, Dr Rivers, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and other real-life people from 1918, with the novel veering off in unexpected tangents to worlds far away. Small passages of the book, such as the inevitable First World War battlefield trench warfare scenes, evoke such unexpected horror and sadness. The stupid things humanity does. Devestating. Amazing writing. So worth reading. Loved the second book in Pat Barker's First World War era set Regeneration trilogy, The Eye In The Door - even better than the first one perhaps. The duality of the human lives presented is fascinating, riffing on the Jeckel & Hyde story. Whether it's focussing on father-son relationships, sexuality, memory/creation, pschology, patriotism and nationalism and pacifism and spying. Lots of looking. Observing. Being seen. Amazing writing. I feel it's a shame i have come upon her novels relatively late on.
