Why I’m proud that I’m a geek

For a long time I thought that being geeky about the things I loved was wrong. I never really fitted in with most of my classmates because while they were talking about boys and their hair, I was playing with my small (but close) group of friends Buffy. We talked about who everyone should be at first. We all wanted to be Buffy, but you can’t have 4 Buffy’s, no Willow and no Angel/Spike etc. So we discussed it out, I was Willow, a teenager that at the age of eight I had a connection with. She was geeky and smart and proud of it. I took a lot as a kid from that show, Willow’s determination and knowledge and facing the world as she was (most of the time). She proved to me that a girl could be strong, smart, funny and a little bit weird and geeky at times.

So reason one why I’m proud to be a geek, we’re smart. I do not mean always genius level intellect, but geeks know a lot of things. Not just exam questions and the endless tests on things, but things like there was almost an animated series of Dr Who, Bayonetta is CHOCKER BLOCKED with references (some of my favourites are “Hey, check this out. Whadya Buyin!? Heard that in a game once.” Luka’s broken hearted girls “Claire, Trish, Silvia and Ammy.” and the flower trails in panther form.) and many other amazing and hidden trivia amassed through out our geeky adventures.

  Passion, while geeks might be an assorted box of sweets we all share one common quality. Passion. We feel passionate about the types of things that normal people just don’t get. We are passionate about the things we love, in my case anime, manga, video games, movies, and comic books. I have often nearly made someone fall asleep with my knowledge of some comic book lore.

  Geeks have a deep and rich culture, we aren’t as anti-social as mainstream media portrays and can’t shake that myth image of. But that image is just that, a myth. We have multiple conventions(cons) and gatherings for our interests all over the world ranging from; comic books, collectors, steampunks and cosplayers. It’s at these events that we get together, meet new people and socialise with old friends to celebrate the things we love. I would also like to add that we have our own kind of fashion, Geek Chic (which I probably end up wearing almost everyday). We have our own music genre; Nerdcore is a sub-genre of hip-hop music, which includes themes and subject matter that are of interest to nerds. There is also Chap-Hop, for the steampunks, which origins began in England that mixes hip hop with components from steampunk and chappist subcultures and songs generally include stereotypical English obsessions.   Geeks are incredibly a creative lot, without geeks like Thomas Edison, Steve Wozniak, Linus Torvalds and a few others who have made the high tech world we currently reside in possible. There are cosplayers that make amazing and complicated costumes of the characters that they love. Geeks adore making stuff and solving problems.

  This is just some of why I’m proud that I am a geek. So whether it’s Star Trek, Star Wars, Steampunk or JRPG’s, be proud of your geekiness.

  Don’t panic and don’t forget your towel.
