Actually one thing i will always find incredibly impressive about Lalka is the fact that Bolesław Prus somehow managed to write a protagonist with depression during times when it wasn't even recognized as mental illness. And of course you can say it about a lot of other characters (like Werther) however, the way Wokulski is written feels much more...real. I would argue his state isn't very romanticised, his suffering feels ugly, difficult, something that readers wouldn't want to experience themselves. It's also much more grounded in the way it works in the story. And you know, i really appreciate Prus for that, it's clear he was incredible at observing people, but also that he tried to understand them. I wonder how many Wokulski's he have met in his life.
